GCB called ‘a sex-filled attack on Christians, conservatives, Texans,’ but is it any good?

I’m reporting this because I want to give a little love to the new ABC show GCB, not because I think these complaints are particularly worth paying attention to. I saw the pilot episode of GCB on Sunday night, because if you put the word “bitches” in your TV show, you know I’m going to give it a chance. It was campy and over the top, but I really enjoyed it and will keep watching. (Most of my favorite shows are either winding down or over for the season, so it’s a welcome addition.) Of course at least one group is up in arms over GCB, short for “Good Christian Bitches,” probably just because it pairs the words “bitches” with “Christians,” but tries to sanitize it a little by abbreviating it. The only sex in the pilot episode (spoiler I guess, although it’s a minor one) was between a married woman and her husband. Oh and there was the intro segment with a guy driving his car over a cliff while getting a bj from his mistress. I guess I forgot that one. Anyway this one watchdog group, which also hates Glee, went off on GCB, but I doubt they saw it. Star Kristin Chenoweth made the same point.

Kristin Chenoweth’s new primetime show GCB has been called “the new Desperate Housewives,” a “catty suburban and humorous drama,” and a “modern day soap opera,” but RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal that one conservative group has much harsher words to describe it.

“Trying to find one bad point to discuss in the foul and hateful GCB is like trying to find one individual liberal in Hollywood. You can’t. There are too many,” Dan Gainor of the Culture and Media Institute told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview on Monday.

“GCB short for ‘Good Christian Bitches,’ is a sex-filled attack on Christians, conservatives and Texans, especially.”

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, GCB is based on the book Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin, and tells the story of one-time mean girl Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb) who returns to her hometown of Dallas after the death of her Ponzi-scheming husband. Amanda has changed her ways, but the girls she left behind — former ugly duckling Carlene (Chenoweth), insecure Sharon (Jennifer Aspen) and glamorous Heather (Marisol Nichols) — won’t forgive and forget.

Packed full of sex, plastic surgery and bible-quoting women in haute couture, the show is already ruffling feathers within a day of the ABC show’s premiere on Sunday.

Gainor went on to slam a specific plotline that has caused outcry among many family values groups involving one of Carlene’s rich girlfriends, who knowingly married a gay man (played by Mark Deklin) who keeps his sexuality secret from the church-going community, and is really in love with a ranch foreman, not his designer-clad wife.

“The gay plotline is just one more way that the ‘writers’ who scripted this garbage can attack those they hate — and that seems like a long list. Next time they should try less bile and something better than a Keeping Up With The Kardashians level script,” said Gainor.

A good Christian girl in real life, Tony winner Chenoweth defended GCB’s controversial story lines and homosexual character.

“The Bible tells us that we’re not supposed to judge, and people shouldn’t judge before seeing the show,” she told ABCNews.com. “I’m a Christian, I think that’s pretty well known, and I would never do anything that I think crossed the line.

“I’d say go to church and take a look around the room and see if you see any women who might be married to a man who might be gay,” she went on to say. “I’d say be very careful of judging someone who’s in marriage who is gay because they don’t want to be told they’re going to hell. I think that happens and I think it’s horrible.”

The Broadway star turned TV actress compared the scandal-filled soap to “chocolate cake and dessert,” and thinks that it is a delicious drama even if the racy plot riles up her right wing fans.

Thanks to her musical success, Chenoweth has a huge gay following which she embraces as much as her Christian fans, and reminds anyone who criticizes her about that of a motto that her grandmother used to say.

“Even as a young child, I thought, ‘Why is being gay bad?,’” she said. “I didn’t understand it. So I asked my grandma, who is the best Christian I ever knew. I’d say, ‘What about my friend Denny, he’s gay, is he going to hell?’ She told me, ‘I read the Bible like I eat fish. I take the meat that serves me well but I don’t choke on the bone.’”

[From Radar]

I love what she said about enjoying the meat of the bible and not choking on the bone! Chenoweth is awesome in that show, and she basically plays the head bitch. My only concern for GCB is that the characters eventually evolve and don’t remain stale cardboard cutouts. I want to feel more sympathy for Chenoweth’s character and learn more of her backstory. I’d like to have my opinion of her character change. This is a trashy soap opera, though, not Downton Abbey. It’s superficial and so enjoyable.

As far as the criticism goes, I doubt anyone thinks this is a generalization about Christians or that it’s even particularly realistic. It’s a TV show, and the characters go to church and act catty. They stand up and make testimonies in church that are aimed at cutting their enemies down. It’s fun to watch but not at all likely. On FX’s “Justified” one of the main characters is a very religious crime kingpin who used to be a white supremacist, but you don’t hear anyone complaining that his character is an attack on Christians.

GCB’s pilot ratings were decent, but not fabulous. Unless the numbers pick up it probably won’t have a second season.

Rihanna to Miranda Lambert: stop talking smack about Chris Brown

After the Grammy Awards, country singer Miranda Lambert tweeted some anti-Chris Brown messages meant to bring attention to the fact that he’s an abuser and shouldn’t have been give two chances to perform at their industry’s most prestigious awards event. Miranda later brought up Chris’ name again in a concert before she sang a song about a woman shooting her abuser. She held up a sign that said “Take Notes Chris Brown.” Well none of this supposedly sat well with Chris’ sort-of on-again ex, Rihanna, the abuse victim. Rihanna allegedly got Miranda’s phone number, called her up and told her to mind her own business.

The claws are out between country music cutie Miranda Lambert and R&B sensation Rihanna!…

Sources say Rihanna, 24, flew into a rage when she heard about Miranda’s tweets attacking [Chris].

“Rihanna got Miranda’s phone number from a mutual acquaintance,” an insider revealed. “She told Rihanna to worry about her own relationship because her husband is known for his wandering eye.”

“Rihanna has moved on since her relationship with Chris,” added the insider. “She believes that if she can let it go, considering she was the victim, others need to move forward also.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, March 12, 2012]

This could just be a clever way for The Enquirer to squeeze a new angle out of this story, but the fact that they add the detail that Rihanna actually called Miranda makes me think it’s true. You can imagine Rihanna telling another woman to mind her own business, especially since she’s probably sleeping with Chris again. But does Rihanna even know that Blake Shelton is supposedly a cheater? The Enquirer has been running stories about him for a while, but they’re not getting a lot of press so who knows if this is true.

That last line in the story about how people should forgive the perp because the victim does doesn’t sit well with me. That’s not how the justice system works, and it wouldn’t be fair to anyone, particularly future victims, if it did. Just because someone forgives an abuser (or a rapist, etc.) doesn’t mean that they’ve changed their ways, or that they shouldn’t face the consequences for their crime. That includes having people talk smack about them, which seems an incredibly minor thing compared to what Chris did. It’s a shame Rihanna can’t see that.

Here’s Rihanna’s latest outfit in London yesterday. Leather mid-thigh boots, studded white shorts, a denim shirt and another denim shirt wrapped around her waist and tucked under her shorts. At least she’s consistent.

Lindsay Lohan through the years: the unnatural evolution of her 3.0 face

It’s been clear during Lindsay’s big SNL “comeback” lead-up (we’ll see) that she had a fresh round of fillers and work done to her face. She looks like a chipmunk, and she’s beginning to resemble Janice from the Muppets with her new ridiculously long wig. Kaiser already mentioned Lindsay’s latest nose job and the fact that everyone is noticing that she has too many fillers in her face. So we sort-of already covered this, but I think it was worth its own post for the photos. Radar also has a bunch of quotes from a plastic surgeon about the obvious work Lindsay’s had done, and it’s hilariously bitchy. Particularly the part about how she looks like a chipmunk and how “hard living” has affected her looks. Here’s some of Radar’s report:

Lindsay Lohan claims that she has kissed goodbye to her hard partying habits, but the troubled actress looked far from wholesome and natural on Wednesday night, prompting speculation from an expert that she has substituted an alcohol and drug addiction for a plastic surgery addiction.

“Unfortunately it looks like it,” celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who has not treated the 25-year-old star, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview.

“She appears to have a classic, over-plumped pillow face. Her cheeks look like she’s storing nuts for the winter. I suspect that she’s undergone multiple injections of filler like Sculptra or Restylane,” he explained.

“While these treatments can create a very youthful, natural look, when overdone they can make a person look like a Cabbage Patch Doll.”

It’s not the first time Dr. Youn has commented on the Mean Girls star’s appearance recently. Just last month he voiced concern that she was going overboard with plastic surgery treatments.

“I suspect that hard living combined with some plastic surgery is causing her to look virtually unrecognizable,” he revealed.

“Her lips look plumped and stiff, possibly from injections of Restylane. Her forehead is also excessively smooth, consistent with injections of Botox or Dysport.”

[From Radar]

This is what addiction does to a person, and I’m talking about serious drug addiction, not plastic surgery addiction, although obviously that’s played into this situation. Drugs change someone’s personality and they mess with their appearance. Lindsay’s situation is not as dramatic as “faces of meth,” but there are parallels here.

Remember, this woman is 25! I had to look it up to remind myself, and I’ve been writing about her for years. Holy crap. She looks like she’s at least 40.

Halle Berry hires a new lawyer so she can go after Gabriel for custody, move to France

Is the sh-t about to hit the fan? According to TMZ Halle Berry has hired a real “bulldozer” lawyer who previously represented Mel Gibson and is known for getting his way in court. Rich people can easily switch lawyers when they’re not getting results fast enough, but TMZ says this means that Halle is about to dial it up in her custody battle with Gabriel Aubry. I’m also thinking that Halle’s last lawyer tried to get her to bring it down a notch and be more realistic and she told him to stuff it. Halle wants to move to France with her new boyfriend/maybe fiance, Oliver Martinez, and she’s going to make that happen at any cost, particularly to her daughter. I’m just waiting to see what kind of petulant response Gabriel gives Radar Online about this one. I’m not on Halle’s side by any means, I just think Gabriel has quickly stooped to her level. He still deserves a relationship with his daughter, though. Here’s TMZ’s report on this:

Halle Berry has dumped another man … but this one has been with her way longer than all the others — her longtime lawyer/confidante, Neal Hersh … TMZ has learned.

Here’s the lowdown. Our sources tell us Halle wants to go after her baby daddy Gabriel Aubry with nuclear weapons — metaphorically speaking — and she thinks Hersh is too much of a gentleman to wage that kind of legal war, even though he has guided Halle through 2 divorces, a custody war and various other legal skirmishes.

So we’ve learned Halle has hired Stephen Kolodny (above), who is legendary in L.A. legal circles for the level of legal warfare she so wants. You may recall Kolodny repped Mel Gibson in his epic battle with Oksana Grigorieva — and that got kinda nasty.

Kolodny has already gone to court with Halle. We’ve learned last Thursday the new duo went to dependency court to have more restrictions placed on Aubry. The dependency judge has already ordered that Gabriel can only have contact with Nahla in the presence of a monitor. On Thursday, we’re told the judge voiced additional concerns and ordered Gabriel to return the child to Halle earlier than the 6 PM deadline on days he has custody.

Kolodny will have his hands full trying to convince the family law judge that Halle should be able to move to France with the child because she’s concerned about paparazzi and safety.

[From TMZ]

Will Halle get her way? Will this go down as she’s expecting and will she get to both smear her daughter’s father in the press and limit his contact with her? Even if the custody case resolves exactly as she’s hoping, I doubt it will be a happily ever after for Halle. It rarely is. The novelty of France will wear off and so will the novelty of her latest relationship. Maybe I’m wrong, though, maybe she’s matured as a person. Although if that were the case she would be staying put in LA and working on establishing a friendly co-parenting relationship with her ex. Can it be that hard to get along for the sake of their daughter?

Halle is shown on 2/22 and 2/24 outside Nahla’s school. She’s shown with Oliver and Nahla on 2/26 and with Oliver alone on 2/28/12. Credit: LRR/FameFlynet Pictures

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s adorable daughters are getting so big

If you would have told me when Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban got married that they were going to last over five years I wouldn’t have believed you. I know that sounds mean, but Keith went to rehab shortly after he was married and we heard some stories about his hard-partying ways. He didn’t seem ready to sober up and settle down, but he did it anyway. Keith now seems like a very devoted husband and father, and he must consider himself lucky to have such a great family.

That’s just a preface to these photos of Nicole and Keith at the airport in Sydney yesterday with their two daughters. They have daughter Sunday Rose, three and a half, and daughter Faith Margaret, 14 months. Faith was born via gestational carrier but I would guess she’s biologically Nicole’s as she looks just like her sister and her mom. Look at those ginger curls. Those girls are precious and I can’t believe how big Sunday is! We hardly ever see her and it looks like she grew up overnight. She’s so tall and I would have guessed that she’s older.

The family was in Australia partially for Keith’s job as a judge on the Australian version of The Voice. They also have family and friends in Australia, as the Daily Mail notes, and surely paid some visits while they were there.

I love Nicole’s dress and would like to own a cheaper version of it. The nude-tone underlay gives the illusion that you can see through it by some angles, which adds a little sexiness to it. It’s a very pretty dress and looks comfortable for traveling.

What a nice looking family they are. They look very happy and relaxed and I see a lot of pride on Keith’s face. Who knew?

Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck welcome a boy! (Update: Samuel Garner Affleck)

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have welcomed their third child together, a boy! I’m surprised that Garner had her baby, as I honestly thought she had a couple more weeks left to go. She’s been looking ready for some time, though. This is the third child for the Afflecks. They also have two daughters together: Seraphina, 3, and Violet, 6. It’s thought that dad Ben was hoping for a son, although Jennifer has said that he seemed open to another daughter, too. There’s no word yet as to the baby’s name. Here’s more, from US Weekly:

The couple of seven years welcomed their third child, a baby boy, in Santa Monica, Calif., a source confirms to Us Weekly.

Garner and Affleck’s new little one joins older daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3.

Announcing her pregnancy in August 2011, Garner, 39, managed to stay mum on the gender of her family’s third baby, and while she admitted she’d be thrilled to have another girl, said Affleck was excited either way.

“I would have thought [he wanted a boy]. At first…I really thought so,” the Arthur actress told Jay Leno in January. “And then [Ben] kind of said, ‘Well, we have girls. We know how to do girls. My girls love me. I’m the big guy in the house.’ So, now I’m not sure.”

[From Us Weekly]

Aw, congratulations to Jennifer and Ben on their new arrival! They’re one of my favorite Hollywood couples and they seem so solid lately. Their girls have such nice names that are unique without sounding too experimental or strange. I bet they’ll go with a traditional name for their boy, but we’ll see. I’m actually excited to hear what they named the little guy.

Update: US Weekly reports that the baby’s name is Samuel Garner Affleck. That’s such a great name for a boy! I like that they used Garner’s name as his middle name as well. They didn’t do that with their daughters’ middle names. Kaiser mentioned to me that the old Testament names are getting very popular lately. Oh and little Samuel was born on February 27, so he’s definitely not a leap year baby. Ben wrote on his FacebookWe are happy to announce on February 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck.” Congrats!

Garner and Affleck are shown out together on 1-9-12. She is shown out with Violet on Friday, 2-24-12. Credit: Pablo/FameFlynet Pictures

Is Jessica Chastain lying about being just 30? A 1998 article puts her at 35 now

You know I love Jessica Chastain. She’s so pretty, she’s so genuinely nice, and I think she can really act too. But it’s kind of slow today and we’re searching for something to report on. Hence this story that Jessica Chastain might not really be “30″ as her Wikipedia entry and IMDB states. I do remember reading somewhere that she was 31 or 32, and I remember squinting and thinking that she looked older than that. Radiant and lovely, but older than that. Well Kaiser pointed me to this article in HuffPo from last year in which they state that Jessica won’t disclose her age. They write “Chastain, who is about 30 but will not disclose her exact age, grew up in northern California and dreamed of becoming an actress from about the age of 5.” That’s arguably more honest than shaving a few years off and trying to claim that you’re younger, a la Agyness Dyen. (or Beyonce, or Catherine Zeta-Jones)

Reader Drew pointed out on that Agyness Dyen story that Mandisa from American Idol, who is 36, recently tweeted that she went to high school with Jessica. That would make Jessica 33 at least, if she was a freshman when Mandisa was a senior. (I tweeted Mandisa asking if she was in the same grade as Jessica, and have not yet heard back.) I guess I don’t blame Jessica for wanting to keep her age a secret, but it seems unlikely in this age of the Internet and IMDB.

After I wrote that intro, I googled a little and found this article from 1998 on Jessica Chastain’s turn in “Romeo and Juliet” in a San Francisco production. They say she’s 21, and since that was 1998 that would make her 35 now, or at least turning 35 in less than a month, if her day of birth, March 29, is correct.

But more than anything, it’s the appealing, intense performances of Travis Engle and Jessica Chastain as Romeo and Juliet that lend such a sense of universality to this production. Engle and Chastain, themselves 17 and 21, portray the famous couple as what they really were–love-struck teenagers.

[From Metroactive.com, article from the April 30-May 6, 1998 issue]

Speaking of IMDB, I recently heard a very good editorial on KCRW’s The Business about how IMDB promotes ageism. IMDB is currently being sued by a low-level actress for culling her age when she signed up for an IMDB pro account and using it on her public profile without her permission. KCRW had on a Hollywood agent who said that it’s illegal to ask for someone’s age on a job application, and that she represents many supporting staff in films, like technical and engineering experts, who get discriminated against because they’re older and that information is easily found on IMDB. There’s a ton of competition in Hollywood to be in movie crews, and the agent claims that IMDB makes it very difficult for older people to get work in the field. That’s not even counting the very blatant ageism in casting the acting parts, particularly for women.

So is Jessica Chastain just trying to protect her skyrocketing movie career by not disclosing her age? Probably, and at least she’s being somewhat honest about it. Or is she? If you google “How Old is Jessica Chastain?” the answer you get is “30″.

Update: I found these quotes from Chastain last year in which she said that she doesn’t like revealing her age and can play any part:

I don’t like revealing how old I am. I played a teenager in a movie recently and Brad Pitt’s wife in another so I like to think I can be any age I need to be.”

Good for her.

Second Update: Thanks to Jane for pointing out that Snakkle has Chastain’s senior yearbook picture from 1995. That’s consistent with the news that she’s turning 35 in a month.

Has the Harry Potter franchise been snubbed at the Oscars for years?

Yesterday I was talking to someone about the Oscars and she said she’d watched some of the beginning, but that she wasn’t that interested because the only nominated films she’s seen were Harry Potter and The Help. (She also agreed with me that the video entertainment segments Sunday night didn’t make sense.) The thing about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, indeed the thing about the entire Harry Potter film series, is that they’ve never been nominated for Best Picture by the Academy. They’ve only been nominated for technical awards, 12 in total, but they’ve never won anything and people have really noticed.

Despite saying last month that the lack of a Best Picture Oscar nod “didn’t faze” him or his co-workers, star Daniel Radcliffe has said that there’s some “snobbery” in the Academy, that they “don’t like commercial films,” and admitted he was “slightly miffed” that Hugo was nominated in the Best Picture category but that his movie wasn’t. Radcliffe’s comments are toward the end of this article, thanks to MTV:

The only thing “Harry Potter” got during the Oscars ceremony was a joke from host Billy Crystal saying that, despite how much money the series has made in the box office, it’s only had to pay 14 percent in income taxes. It certainly was a poor send-off for one of the most beloved and highest-grossing movie franchises in film history.

The series has never been honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Sunday night’s (February 26) three losses — for art direction, makeup and visual effects — brought the total number of losses to 12 for the eight films.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ lost twice to “Hugo” (a fellow children’s film) and once to “The Iron Lady.” “Harry Potter” leading man Daniel Radcliffe gave his take on the lack of respect for the big-screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s franchise in a recent interview.

“There’s a certain amount of snobbery [in the Academy],” Radcliffe said. “It’s kind of disheartening. I never thought I’d care. But it would’ve been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in.”

He added, “I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching ‘Hugo’ the other day and going, ‘Why was this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed.”

The Academy didn’t even offer “Harry Potter” a series achievement award like the BAFTAs did last year. Some “Potter” fans had expected the series to be rewarded by the Academy for its many years of financial and critical acclaim the same way Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was. Unfortunately, that did not end up being the case.

[From MTV]

I don’t get the politics involved with not awarding Harry Potter with any Oscars. As the article mentions, the Lord of The Rings trilogy did clean up at the Academy Awards and won a total of 17 Oscars over the three films. Some may argue that Lord of The Rings was better than Harry Potter, but it could also be that it was aimed at an older audience. The Academy doesn’t pay a lot of attention to comedies or children’s films. (Although HP definitely got more mature over time.) Also when it comes to Harry Potter, the movies were around for 10 years. It may have just been the case that voters took them for granted. Still, it would have been nice to have seen the series acknowledged in some way. HP was a huge commercial success, but they were also solidly entertaining and incredibly unique films that were hits with critics too. Like LOTR, HP created a whole new world that transported us to another place. I’ll miss it.

Whitney Houston’s funeral home on Enquirer photo: We didn’t take it, it’s devastating

Whitney Houston in her coffin is still on the cover of The National Enquirer, on newsstands everywhere. The issue won’t be replaced until Thursday or Friday of this week. In the two stores that I’ve checked, The Enquirer has been moved behind the other tabloids so that the only thing visible is the headline. Several of you commented on the story that you saw the issue out and visible at a child’s eye level.

Well not only is this photo presumably devastating to Whitney’s family, it could seriously damage the business of the funeral home where it was taken. The owner of the facility where Whitney was interred, the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, N.J., told The Daily News that the leak of the photo was “devastating” to her personally and to her longstanding family business. What’s more is that the owner swears that security guards were with Whitney’s body 24 hours a day up until the private family viewing. So someone in Whitney’s inner circle had to have taken and sold that photo. Despicable.

The respected owner of Whitney Houston’s funeral home said Friday she’s “devastated” a photo of the singer in her open casket appeared on the cover of the National Enquirer.

Carolyn Whigham wants fans to know her family-run business did not sell the now notorious image and that she’s “horrified” by accusations her close-knit staff is to blame, she told the Daily News.

“We did not take that photo. We did not sell the photo. We would never do something like that,” the second-generation CEO of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, N.J., said.

“Whitney was a friend,” she continued. “I’m the one who flew to Los Angeles and got Whitney from the coroner’s office. I did everything to protect her.”

She said a deluge of distressing emails from irate Houston fans now has her fearing for her staff’s safety.

“One email said that if the person owned a dog, and the dog died, they would not come to my funeral home,” she said with sadness. “I’m worried about my employees, worried about me. I’ve been in business since 1943. This is my name, my character. Honestly, this is my life’s work. We would never do something like this.”

She said Houston’s family has made it clear they do not blame her business.

“I am very confident they are on the same page with me. Family friend Tyler Perry was on the Steve Harvey (radio) show this morning, and he said emphatically he knows we did not do it,” she told The News.

She said security was with Houston the entire time her body was at the funeral home.

“They were there 24 hours a day. They slept there with her. She was never alone, anywhere,” Whigham said. “The only time security fell back was when the family had the private viewing Friday. We weren’t involved with that. The family invited its own guests.”

[From The NY Daily News]

Several of you who work in the funeral industry commented on this story last week and we’re grateful to you for your insight, particularly to MorticiansDoItDeader and another commenter who just used an ellipses as a handle. Morticians said that the funeral home should have asked visitors to surrender their cellphones as a precaution given the high profile person interred there. She also noted that the embalmers did a good job with Whitney.

There was also the issue of Whitney being buried in 1/2 million worth of jewelry, which Morticians and many of you considered irresponsible by the Enquirer to put out there, as it could invite grave robbers. Morticians noted that it’s not likely Whitney will be buried in that jewelry. “We take that off when everyone leaves and give it back to the family after the service.” The owner of the funeral home said basically the same thing to The Daily News about the jewelry. “That’s crazy. It’s not true.” Poor Whitney and poor Bobbi Kristina. I hope she’s ok, but I’m glad we haven’t heard much about her. Hopefully her family is around her at this time.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen at the Oscars: did she get it right?

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain was in a black and gold embossed Alexander McQueen that earned her a lot of accolades last night. I didn’t love the dress, but I didn’t hate it either. On another actress, one not as sweet and likable as Chastain, I may have thought it was awful. She is just so damn nice that I can’t hate on her dress. I think several of you described it best in the comments “that dress is wearing her.” She’s not working it, and it’s overwhelming her and doesn’t look like her style. Chastain’s hair and makeup were perfection, though, as we’ve seen this entire awards season.

Jessica was so unassuming on the red carpet, and she adorably brought her grandmother, Marilyn, on her date. She told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that “this year is just unbelievable… I feel like I’m walking through a fog. It doesn’t feel like this is a normal day.” She also told the story of how she learned, while at Paris Fashion Week, that she was nominated for an Oscar. “I did not think I was going to get a nomination. I was in Paris Fashion week and I went to turn my phone off and I had like 12 missed calls.” You could tell she was still awed by it and wasn’t taking her success for granted.

I like her so much, and I just want her to get her fashion right. She sort-of did here, by some people’s estimation. It could have been much worse, and it has been for her this season. I’m trying to be diplomatic about it, but it’s just the bizarre pattern on her bustline and skirt. It’s too complicated and busy and the effect is overwhelming. Still, a strong showing for Jessica comparatively.

Jessica’s hair and makeup were amazing though. She’s just so pretty. Did you see how worried she looked right before the Best Actress was announced? She was concerned that her costar Viola might not win, and we know that she didn’t. I’m a little in love with Jessica, she’s so unaffected and genuine and its in no way a schtick or an act.
