Amy Adams in fringed de la Renta at the VF Party: better than her Oscar dress?

It feels like Amy Adams is always a bridesmaid at the Oscars, and that she’s constantly nominated but never wins anything. I checked her wiki and she’s been nominated for best supporting actress four times: at the 2006 Academy Awards for Junebug, in 2009 for Doubt, in 2011 for The Fighter and this year for The Master. She’s a staple at the Oscars and she always puts her game face on, even when she’s pre-taping reaction shots for dumb skits involving actresses’ boobs.

At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party (we’re getting to some late-breaking photos today) Amy donned this really incredible silver fringed Oscar de la Renta dress that was very 20s but just skirted the edge of “full flapper.” Does that make sense? Like this could have looked cheap and dated but it didn’t, Amy really worked it. (We don’t have full length photos, but here’s one on US’s site.) I wish she would have worn this dress to the Oscars instead of that pale Oscar de la Renta with the huge fluffy train, but a lot of you liked it.

Also in metallic, in shocking, eye-assaulting blue, we have Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier. Nina Dobrev just sported a green version of this dress to the Critics Choice Awards, and she wore it much better, IMO. Nina doesn’t take herself as seriously as Ginnifer and she doesn’t suffer from styling problems like having hair that resembles a Little Rascal.

Also with bad pre WW2-era hair we have Anna Paquin. She lost a lot of weight since having her twins and seems to have gone a little too far with it, but I guess that’s Hollywood. I really want to like these two and I’m a huge True Blood fan, but I’m still kind of miffed that we haven’t learned their babies’ names, or even their genders. At least they look happy here and aren’t sucking in their cheeks. I don’t have a designer ID on Anna’s dress but I’m going to guess it’s Rachel Comey, which made a similar dress that she wore about a year ago. It’s meh. Anna and Stephen hit up both the VF Oscar party and Elton John’s soiree. They were probably psyched for a date night.

And here’s Jane Fonda ruling the Vanity Fair carpet like she ruled the Oscars. She was in a very formfitting abstract spot print gown accented with the same killer clutch, awesome drop earrings and gold peeptoe shoes she wore earlier in the night. I know Jane has had some work done, she admits it, but she doesn’t look plastic or waxy and she just looks sexy as hell. She’s the best advertisement for her fitness DVDs.

Jennifer Garner in ruffled Gucci at the Oscars: glamorous or fussy?

Jennifer Garner supported her husband Ben Affleck through his Best Movie win in this deep purple tight fitted Gucci gown accented by a bizarre ruffled back that continued into a train. In photos this dress looks better to me than it did on camera, particularly when she was being interviewed by Kristen Chenoweth. (Maybe that’s because I found Chenoweth supremely annoying. Did you see that stunt she pulled with Hugh Jackman asking him if she weighed more than an Oscar?) Garner explained that the gown was custom-made and that “They gave me other ones to chose from but I loved this from the minute I saw the first sketch. I save up all my fashion for red carpet events.” Garner has a banging body but somehow this gown didn’t flatter her and accented the wrong places. Also: matchy bridal shoes! Something nice: I like her statement necklace and her hair and makeup are pretty.

Jane Fonda brought the 80s back in this fierce canary yellow v-neck Atelier Versace complete with freaking shoulder pads and gold detailing around the waist. I’m not kidding, I love this look. This is some bold, dated styling and Fonda pulls it off. The dress looked sexy from the back when she was presenting, too. Work it, Jane!

Melissa McCarthy wore grey David Meister, a designer she’s used many times in the past, and I was underwhelmed by the fit and color of this dress, which was similar to her past red carpet looks. This designer hasn’t really brought it for her. When she was presenting I was struck by the pretty details of the gown, like the beaded sleeves and the cool black triangle inset panel on the gown where a slit would be. Also, I really disliked her huge poofy hair. It seems like everyone was doing that a few years back.

I loved Melissa’s presentation with Paul Rudd for Animated Short and Feature. They’re both excellent at deadpanning it. I was hoping that the show would keep up those staged awkward moments, but apart from the weird Avengers thing there wasn’t much.

I’m adding Norah Jones in here as she was also in grey and was just so sweet on the red carpet. I was impressed with how shy yet genuine she was with Ryan Seacrest. She told him that it was her first Oscars. I don’t have a designer ID on her gown yet, which was pretty but kind of plain to me, which may have been due to the color. Her hair was also too fussy piled on top of her head like that, but she still looked so pretty. Norah performed “Everybody Needs a Best Friend,” from Ted, you can see her performance here on The Oscar website. I felt bad for her because the sound for her vocals was being overwhelmed by the music. The engineers should have perfected the levels during the rehearsals, there was no excuse for that.

Bonus pic with Adele! We’ll have more on her shortly.

Amy Adams in huge Oscar de la Renta at the Oscars: amazing or ridiculous?

Best Supporting Actress nominee Amy Adams wore this pale silver Oscar de la Renta gown with a huge fluffy ruffled skirt, a fitted sweetheart bodice and a train that would have seemed excessive for a royal bride. I love to see Amy on the red carpet, she usually looks amazing, and she often mixes it up and takes calculated fashion risks that pay off for her. This dress feels uninspired somehow, like it’s over the top but in a way that’s not risky at all. There’s something “off” about the look. Plus the color of the gown washes her out, and her styling leaves something to be desired. This is better than last year’s Oscar look for Amy, but she went “too formal” where she was too casual in 2012. She’ll get her fashion and makeup exactly right when she does win that Oscar, and I suspect it won’t be long now.

Here’s another Best Actress nominee, Helen Hunt, who of course got shut out by AnnE and her unstoppable false humility. Unlike Anne, Helen went with a decidedly downmarket designer for her Oscar gown, H&M! She told Ryan Seacrest that H&M was “going green, they work with this company Global Green that I love. It’s a win-win.” Helen’s navy strapless gown wasn’t a standout, but coupled with her gorgeous jewelry and how pretty and comfortable she looked, it definitely was a win-win.

Catherine Zeta Jones wore this gold sequin and mesh mermaid Zuhair Murad gown that just looked trashy, especially on screen. There was too much going on with the complicated beading on the bodice and the curlicue throughout the skirt. Her hair was really fake looking too. When Ryan Seacrest interviewed her with Michael Douglas, I got the impression that Douglas was kind of drunk, but she seemed to hold it together.

CZJ performed “All That Jazz” as part of one of the many musical numbers that were like bags of pretzels handed out during a really long flight. (At least CZJ’s performance was. I would never say that about Adele or Babs.) She also presented Best Musical Score, along with her fellow castmembers from Chicago. (That movie came out 10 years ago. I don’t get it.)

Octavia Spencer was in her go-to designer, Tadashi Shoji, and I like that she went with a different fit than the Grecian dresses she was wearing last year. (Maybe that style is on the wane anyway.) Renee Zellweger said something last night that explained to me celebrities are so loyal to a specific designer. She said, about Carolina Herrera, “I love her and I love her team… I always look forward to those guys showing up.” That makes a lot of sense, they get to know and trust these designers. I get why celebrities form a relationship with one designer who consistently makes them look good instead of paying a stylist who may have her own motivations.

Octavia looks lovely and I like her asymmetric neckline here. The bangs are a little much, but her styling is otherwise pretty. This is the kind of skirt that I would have liked to see on Amy Adams’ dress – big and flowy but not comical.

Elizabeth Banks in orange McQueen at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party: kick ass or fug?

When I was covering Melissa McCarthy’s big poofy Oscar hair, I mentioned that the giant hair trend seems to be on the wane. Unfortunately Elizabeth Banks tried to make it work at last night’s Vanity Fair Party, with a kind of upward swoop Elvis thing, and ended up looking like a Q-tip. She’s so cute and happy I can’t trash her styling though, especially in this awesome dress. I know some of you won’t agree, but this orange and cream abstract watercolor Alexander McQueen gown is amazing. It’s bold, it has striking details that are not too busy or overdone (I love how the bodice is a little more cream than the skirt and is separated by that metallic and tortoise belt) and it’s somehow contemporary and classic at the same time. Those earrings seem a little goofy to me, but they’re not bad. She looks really pretty and she stands out without looking try-hard.

For some reason Elizabeth posed with Richard Gere. He looks like he’s giving her some dumb advice here.

Patricia Clarkson also went with a bright color in this crimson dress with mounds of draped fabric at the hips. I actually have a skirt like this that I bought a few years back when I was at my skinniest and this trend was at its height. It adds to the illusion that your hips are big, but I don’t think it’s unflattering. You can tell it’s the fabric and not the wearer. Maybe I’m saying that because this is Patricia Clarkson, she can wear whatever the hell she wants and wear the hell out of it.

Amy Poehler was in a fitted emerald green gown that looks like Herve Leger, although I don’t have a designer ID on it yet. Her boobs look really good in that dress, her makeup is fresh and her hair is cute. I’d love to see Amy work it a little more, she’s slouching here.

Amy’s Parks & Rec co-star Rashida Jones was in sequin Vivienne Westwood, in one of the gunmetal colors that was popular last night. I wish we had a full length photo of her – you can see one here, on Just Jared. There’s a little too much fabric going on with this dress, but the entire look is really glamorous yet a little understated. I like it, although I’d like to see her with different jewelry. The emerald cuff and ring are a little much.

Daniel Day Lewis wins The Oscar for Best Actor for ‘Lincoln’

Daniel Day Lewis has won the Academy Award for Best Leading Actor for his phenomenal performance in Spielberg’s Lincoln. DDL was widely expected to take home the statue after sweeping the awards season this year. It’s not like he campaigned for it, I didn’t notice any press he did except for 60 Minutes, where he talked about inhabiting his character and being sad to leave the great statesman’s point of view. With Daniel, his acting seems like a compulsion and a dedication mixed up with enormous ability. He’s a notorious method actor, and the result is unparalleled.

Daniel is now one of only six actors to earn three or more acting Oscars during their career. (He last took home an Oscar in 2008 for There Will Be Blood. His first was in 1990 for My Left Foot.) During his acceptance speech, DDL was as witty and plain spoken as we’ve come to expect from him. I love his speeches, he can weave a story and tell topical jokes instead of just listing off names or giving rehearsed lines. Or maybe he does rehearse his speeches and they sound like he’s making them up on the spot, he’s that good. Here’s some of what he said:

I really don’t know how any of this happened. I do know that I’ve received so much more than my fair share of good fortune in my life, and I’m so grateful to the Academy…

It’s a strange thing because three years ago, before we decided to do a straight swatch, I had actually been committed to play Margaret Thatcher and Meryl was Steven’s first choice for Lincoln. I’d like to see that version.

Steven didn’t have to persuade me to do Lincoln, but I had to persuade him that perhaps if I was going to do it, that Lincoln shouldn’t be a musical…

Since we got married 16 years ago my wife Rebecca’s lived with some very strange men… luckily she’s the versatile one in the family, she’s been the perfect companion for all of them.

Daniel then gave his thanks as only he can, and he even thanked the “mysterious mind, body and spirit of Abrahama Lincoln.” He’s so awesome, and his speech made it worth it for me to stay up this late. He told better jokes on the spot than the Oscar writers could come up with in weeks. (I mean it’s not bad, but it’s long. I always forget how long it is.) Congratulations to DDL! I have to admit that I was rooting for Hugh Jackman to take it home, but I do think the right actor won this year.

Daniel Day Lewis is shown at the BAFTA Awards with his daughter niece, Charissa Shearer, on 2-10-13. (Thanks Maureen for the update!) Credit: FameFlynet

Helen Hunt in a pantsuit, victorious at The Spirit Awards: cool and casual?

At last night’s Independent Spirit Awards Helen Hunt finally took home a statue for Best Supporting Actress, for The Sessions. (A complete list of winners is here and nominees are here.) I’m so happy for her! I’m not going to front like I’ve watched the whole Spirit Awards yet, 10pm is past my bedtime, but I did tape it and fast-forward to Helen’s win. Helen thanked her her co-star, John Hawkes (who also won a Spirit Award!), saying I “got to dance with the sexiest dance partner who never moved.” She also said that she was surprised that that a film about healthy sexuality got made. She ended her speech with a reference to her daughter, Makena, who turns 9 next month. “I hope that my daughter stands in the light of the spirit of this movie for all her days.” Does she mean the spirit of gentle compassion? I was a little confused by that.

Helen wore some black skinny jeans paired with a white dressy tee and a black jacket. She looked awesome and very appropriate for the more casual style of the Spirit Awards. (Just Jared identifies her jeans as J Brand in the “Maria” style.)

Nina Dobrev wore this Michael Kors shirt and dress shorts combo which was just ok I guess. The top is gorgeous and she may have been going for “casual” with those shorts, but I don’t think dress shorts look good on anyone other than Dr. Zoe Hart. Plus what’s up with her hair?

Also in dress shorts we have the venerable Marcia Gay Harden. What do you say about this outfit? The shorts have the word “Carpe” written large on the hem, and her tucked-in shirt is somewhat sheer and yet still has a baffling sequin design that wouldn’t be out of place on an Ed Hardy design. I like her white coat, it’s kind of boss.

Laura Dern continued the sheer shirt trend with this totally see-through pink lace sleeveless top and cranberry pencil shirt accented by a bright blue bra. I haven’t been watching Enlightened on HBO this season, having only seen the first season, but this reminds that I might want to check it out again. Maybe Laura isn’t so unlike the wacky, unhinged character she plays on the show. She’s really great on it, but she gets in such precarious situations that it makes me uncomfortable at times, kind of like this outfit. It’s like you can’t look away.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas deny Enquirer’s split cover

This week’s upcoming National Enquirer has a typical attention-getting cover featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Micheal Douglas’ alleged split after 12 years of marriage. In terms of the Enquirer’s veracity, well I put less stake in their cover stories as they need to move copies. They have an older readership who would be interested if these two broke up, is what I’m saying. That’s not to say it’s not true, just that they may be making mountains out of regular relationship issue molehills. Or maybe The Enquirer is jumping to conclusions based on Catherine and Michael’s separate public appearances lately. Not that there have been too many of them. In a preview on The Daily Mail, The Enquirer points to the fact that CZJ and Michael haven’t been attending each other’s events. Maybe they’re just trading off time with the kids. Here’s more:

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have denied reports that their marriage has been under strain.

The celebrity couple, who have been married for 12 years, were reported by the National Enquirer to have recently been in the midst of a ‘hush hush trial separation.’

However a representative told MailOnline that ‘the story is completely false.’

Indeed, the couple have been looking more in love than ever lately, appearing together on the New York red carpet for Catherine’s latest film Side Effects and at New York Fashion Week.

The Enquirer alleges that the marriage ‘buckled under the pressure of dealing with Michael’s cancer battle, his son Cameron’s incarceration on drugs charges and Catherine’s struggle with bipolar II disorder.’

The publication even claims that 68-year-old Michael ‘moved out’ of the home he shared with the 43-year-old actress and children Dylan, 12, and nine-year-old Carys, moving into a nearby rental property.

‘Michael said something to the effect that he and Catherine were taking a “time out”, and he was looking forward to having an entire house as his personal man cave,’ a source said…

According to the Enquirer, cracks began to publicly appear when Catherine was a ‘no show’ at a special screening of her father-in-law Kirk Douglas’s film Spartacus last year.

‘Michael made some lame excuse, but when she skipped the family dinner, it was obvious that something was not right,’ a source said. ‘I think he felt completely betrayed that Catherine didn’t show up.’

However, representatives for the star insist that Catherine was in attendance at the dinner.

The Enquirer reports that the Welsh actress is ‘determined’ to save the marriage for the sake of the children.

‘It’s because of Dylan and Carys that Michael and Catherine aren’t giving up on each other,’ the source said.’But only time will tell if they can make things work over the long haul.’

The report comes after Michael gave a recent interview to People saying his wife is ‘more beautiful than ever.’

And he said he supports the 43-year-old Welsh star with everything because she is ‘simply the best’.

He told People magazine: ‘Catherine and I are doing well. She is more beautiful than ever inside and out. I support her with everything and she is simply the best.’

[From The Daily Mail]

The thing that rings falsest to me is that the Enquirer is claiming Catherine didn’t attend that family dinner with the venerable Kirk Douglas while the rep is like “uh, she was there.” So their case seems to be based on some flimsy, and incorrect evidence. We’ll see, but I just can’t imagine these two breaking up.

I have heard that Michael isn’t planning on attending the Oscars, where Catherine is singing as part of some tribute to musical films. (She was in Chicago, I think that’s it for her musicals.) The dude is a 68 year-old cancer survivor. My dad is a couple years younger than that and he’s in great health but he wouldn’t want to sit through the Oscars, either. It’s probably a royal pain in the ass for some celebrities to get dressed up, show up, sit through the long ceremony, act interested, make small talk and then be expected to go to parties afterwards. I don’t blame Michael for skipping and I don’t think it necessarily speaks to any problems in his marriage. I don’t want these two to break up, though! I really like them together.

Thanks to A for the tip!

Bethenny Frankel takes surfing lessons in Sydney, shows off bikini bod

These are photos of Bethenny Frankel in a bikini on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia today. She went alone and left her daughter back with her soon-to-be ex husband. We get the occasional paparazzi photo from Bondi Beach, usually of the much more camera-friendly Hugh Jackman making us bite our palms and stifle screams from our cubicles at work. It’s safe to assume though that Frankel called the paps here, and that she wanted to show off her lithe bikini body, which is her bread and butter if you will. I guess the idea is for us to see how great she looks and go out and buy Skinnygirl margarita mix.

Last month, when Bethenny announced that her foodie friend had lost 66 pounds following her Naturally Thin book, I looked up the reviews for her diet book on Amazon. It got mixed reviews, with one person summing it up as “Eat whatever you want as long as you don’t go over 800 calories a day, drink water, exercise as much as you can.” The gist is that Bethenny doesn’t recommend “depriving” yourself, in that you can have three little bites of anything, but you can’t have a whole cookie for instance, or a whole steak. She also recommends what another reviewer calls “neurotic, eating disordered behaviors” like pulling the bread out of half a bagel or English muffin and just eating the crusts. (Personally I would rather count calories, and anything under 1,200 a day makes me lightheaded.) So that’s how she achieved this enviable figure, and it sounds like a lot of suffering. It obviously works for her.

In terms of Bethenny’s career, she has a new talk show premiering this fall and she’s writing a book aboutthe struggles and compromises all single moms face.” As if, with all the money, help and fame she has, she has any idea what’s it’s like to struggle and compromise. Her “compromises” involve going to Australia instead of Italy, where paparazzi are harder to come by.

As for her personal life, in the wake of her divorce Bethenny has been staying occasionally in the upper east side home of a billionaire she claims is just a “friend.” That’s extreme luxury, not a struggle. As is a weekend jaunt down under. Must be nice.

Brendan Fraser claims he can no longer afford $900k a year in child support, alimony

Remember when Brendan Fraser was hot stuff? I think that was the mid to late 90s, around the time he looked super sexy in ’92′s Encino Man (I loved that movie) and kind of peaked in 99′s The Mummy. Fraser, 44, hasn’t been working steadily, he’s no longer a box office draw and he’s done some terrible films lately to make ends meet.

In 2009 he divorced his wife, the mother of his three sons, after over 10 years of marriage. Fraser been paying a whopping $900,000 a year in child support and alimony since their split, and he recently filed to have the amount reduced. Fraser claims that his earning power has dimmed considerably and that he can no longer keep up the payments for his kids. After sitting through Furry Vengeance, I believe it. Here’s more, thanks to the NY Post:

The “Mummy’’ movies made him one of the world’s highest-paid actors, but Brendan Fraser suggests that he couldn’t land a job afterward.

His ex-wife isn’t buying it.

In Connecticut court last week, Fraser’s ex, Afton Smith, 45, accused the 44-year-old star of “fraud” for making the claim while allegedly hiding $9 million in new film contracts when they settled their divorce in February 2009.

The allegation came after Fraser went to court to try to reduce the $900,000 in alimony and child support he annually pays his 45-year-old ex-wife, insisting he no longer earns enough to justify that amount.

Court records and testimony reveal that, at the time of his split from the lesser-known actress, Fraser bizarrely claimed that he expected to make $0 — that’s zero dollars — from acting work in the future, despite an impressive résumé of high-grossing films including the three “Mummy” flicks, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “George of the Jungle.”

He later claimed he said that because he wasn’t aware of any definite future deals at the time.

Fraser acknowledged he since has acted in several movies — some of which are awaiting release.

But he cited a litany of medical issues that he says have put a “considerable” crimp on his ability to earn future big bucks.

Afton’s lawyer noted that, as of December, the actor had $24.7 million in assets.

Hearings in the legal sequel to Fraser’s nine-year marriage to Afton — with whom he has three young sons — are set to resume in Stamford Superior Court next week, with Fraser still on the witness stand.

[From The NY Post]

Checking his IMDB, Fraser had only two films in 2010, one film in 2011, and nothing last year. This year he’s really working hard and has about eight movies coming up, according to IMDB. He may have just taken lousy roles out of desperation, it’s hard to tell.

I want to know what kind of medical problems he was suffering. I’m really curious to hear about that. Did he hurt his back or something? I think I found it… In 2001, while filming The Mummy Returns, Director Stephen Somers said that Fraser was injured on set. “I blew up Brendan’s knee, broke one of his ribs, and tore a disc in his back. Every once in a while, when you see a pained look on Brendan’s face, he ain’t faking it.” That might explain his weight gain. I’m just saying. I would still hit it.

As for 900k a year in child support and alimony, that sounds insane to me and like you won the Powerball. If he’s not making that kind of money anymore his ex wife should scale down a little. This isn’t a case where the kids are going to have to suffer. It’s possible he’s hiding assets though as she claims.

Candids of Fraser are from 2012. Other photos are file photos, circa 2007. Credit: WENN.com and FameFlynet

Samantha Ronson’s mom calls Lindsay Lohan ‘psychotic, out of control’

Back in November, 2008, Samantha Ronson’s mother, Anne Dexter-Jones, attended a party in Dubai with her daughter and her daughter’s then-girlfriend, Lindsay Lohan. Lindsay’s outrageous behavior at the party was so disturbing to Anne that she told her daughter and Lindsay that she did not approve of their relationship and that Lindsay was not welcome in her home. Anne spoke on the record to the Daily Mail to promote her new jewelry line, and she didn’t mince words, calling Lindsay “psychotic,” “out of control” and “spoiling for a fight.”

Anne is the ex wife of Mick Jones, the guitar player of Foreigner. She has two children from that marriage, which was her second. Her first husband is a band manager named Laurence Ronson, with whom she had daughter Samatha, fashion designer Charlotte Ronson and music producer Mark Ronson. Here’s more of her quotes to the Daily Mail:

The lavish VIP after-party to mark the opening of Dubai’s latest luxury hotel, The Atlantis, was in full swing in the seven-room suite reserved for talk-show billionaire Oprah Winfrey.
As celebrity guests, including Kylie Minogue, actress Mischa Barton and designers Mary-Kate Olsen and Matthew Williamson, drank premium champagne and nibbled artfully created canapes, Ann Dexter-Jones watched in disbelief as actress Lindsay Lohan threw an extraordinary, childish tantrum.

It was the moment she knew that she had to intervene in her daughter Samantha Ronson’s romance with the troubled Hollywood star.

Lohan had been dating Samantha – Ann’s eldest daughter and a successful British DJ – who was playing at the 1,539-room resort’s grand opening celebration.

‘Suddenly, without any warning, Lindsay flung herself on to the thick carpet and started to roll around screaming like a child,’ said Ann, as she recalled the bizarre scene that so shocked her four years ago.

‘It seemed she was upset that people, including Samantha, were not paying her enough attention.

‘To my mind, it was classic psychotic behaviour. I took Lindsay aside and told her not to make a spectacle of herself. She was clearly out of control and spoiling for a fight.’

Even before the Dubai incident, Ann, the British-born former wife of guitarist Mick Jones from rock band Foreigner, was apprehensive about Samantha’s involvement with Lohan.

She said: ‘I know stuff, but I don’t want to go into it. I just knew that it was not a good place for my child to be, but sometimes a parent’s objection only makes it more exciting.

‘When I saw for myself just how volatile Lohan was, I realised that the relationship was not healthy.

‘The morning after her tantrum – and believe me, that was not the worst of it – I told them both that I could no longer support them as a couple, that I no longer approved of them being together and that Lindsay was no longer welcome in my home…’

‘I saw how much pain my daughter was in and that she was suffering deeply. She is a very Zen person and not used to the kind of turmoil that Lindsay seems to thrive on.

‘I was seriously anxious about Samantha’s safety and wellbeing. I feared a tragedy. It got to a point that I wasn’t sleeping very well.’

‘I didn’t want to interfere because I brought up my children to be strong and independent people from a very early age.

‘But after the incident in Dubai I knew it was time for me to take a stand and not act as an enabler. I’m a pretty blunt person and like to shoot from the hip, so to speak. So, I told them straight – to their faces. I said I didn’t want to create a social veneer; pretending everything was fine when it clearly wasn’t.

‘Naturally, Samantha did not take it very well, but as a parent I’ve never tried to win any popularity contest with my kids.’

Ann is the first to admit that in her day she was something of a wild child herself. ‘I was certainly no angel and, back in my time, I’d be rolling home from some nightclub or other just when the nanny was getting the kids ready for school.’

Even now, in her early 60s, she’s a feisty socialiser. She can still be found partying with the likes of P Diddy and Jay-Z, or hanging out with fashion designer Nicole Richie.

And after bringing up five children from two marriages, Ann is now making a name for herself as a jewellery designer. ‘It’s time to follow my own dreams,’ she said. ‘It is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but only now have been able to find the time.’

[From The Daily Mail]

There is little to compare between this lady and Dina Lohan. Anne is telling her kids that she doesn’t approve of their choices, and she’s putting her foot down – she’s not enabling them. It does strike me that she’s calling Samantha a “child,” though, and treating her like one, similar to how Dina infantilizes Lindsay. Samantha was certainly acting like one by dating that fool of an addict, but Dina doesn’t ever call her kids out on their sh*t like this. At least Anne didn’t ignore it, and let her daughter know exactly how she felt about Lohan.

How embarrassing to be at a big party like that and have to endure your daughter’s date flailing like a toddler on the floor. That’s out of control even for Lohan. Would she dare do that when she’s working as a paid escort or does she realize that she needs to act like a “professional” when she’s getting paid for her company?
