Is Nicole Kidman a bad mother?

People are saying that Nicole Kidman hasn’t seen her kids in ages while crazy Tom Cruise is jetting all over the world, but still manages to go to Conner and Isabella’s sports matches.

Star thinks it has to do with Tom’s controlling nature, but it sounds to us like Nicole Kidman just doesn’t care:

The actress’ kids, 13-year-old Isabella and 11-year-old Connor, haven’t really been seeing a whole lot of their mom lately, and actually, the last time she was photographed with her kids was Christmas of 2004 at a Lakers game in L.A.

Proud papa Tom Cruise, 43, and stepmom-to-be Katie Holmes, 27, are regularly spotted making out in the stands at Connor’s baseball games and Isabella’s soccer matches, the kids’ formerly ubiquitous mom seems conspicuously MIA. Although she has clearly spent some time with the children since then — and even introduced them to her groom-to-be, Keith, 38, over a casual, gigglefilled dinner at the Hotel Bel-Air in L.A. on Dec. 20 — it seems that Nicole just isn’t as present in her kids’ lives as she was before.’

A source claims, “Nicole probably isn’t seeing as much of the kids as she’d like to, but her hands are tied.”

“She’s juggling traveling from movie sets to Nashville and Australia to be with her family. If she wants to see the kids, she has to come to L.A. and deal with Tom.”

Also, Kidman’s spokesperson told Star the actress avoids being photographed with her children for “privacy reasons”.

But reports suggest that it may be Tom Cruise that is preventing his ex-wife from spending time with them.

A source says, “It’s not like Tom’s actively keeping her out of their children’s lives, but it’s in his nature to control things.”

“He micromanages their schedule — sports, home-schooling, Scientology studies.”

The source continues, “I think she knew when she and Tom divorced that she’d lose a certain amount of control over her kids’ lives.”

“But she deserves to play a bigger role. Maybe the best she can hope for is now that they’re getting older, they’ll start to make their own decisions.”

Obviously the source is a friend of Nicole’s and is making excuses for her absence from their lives. We aren’t a fan of Tom, but couldn’t Nicole make more of an effort to see her children?

It came out in January that a former nanny of Nicole and Tom said that Nicole was never around at all.

Tom may be a crazy cult spokesperson, but at least he’s there for his kids.

Here are Tom and Katie in Aberdeen, WA for a sort-of premiere for MI3.

Lindsay Lohan at the “Just my Luck” premiere

Lindsay Lohan attended the “Just my Luck” premiere in NY last night. She arrived with her mother and sister, and spun a giant “Just my Luck” Price is Right-type wheel on the red carpet. Lohan was recently profiled in a flattering article in the NY Times. It pondered Lohan’s party-girl image in a detatched, intellectual way, concluding that her talent is great enough to overshadow the fact that she sleeps around and does a lot of drugs:

The swirling tabloid rumors are dangerous because she is no Paris Hilton, famous for being famous. Her situation is more like that of Colin Farrell, a fine actor who has worked with directors like Terrence Malick yet is still best known for drinking and womanizing. And while seriousness doesn’t seem to hurt actors at the box office — being politically outspoken hasn’t damaged George Clooney — out-of-control behavior can backfire, making the actor seem like some maniac you might stare at on a talk show, but wouldn’t want to spend time with in a movie theater. Russell Crowe will probably think twice before tossing another telephone, even if that wasn’t the reason “Cinderella Man” bombed.

There is probably a generational difference; Ms. Lohan’s contemporaries may not care what she does off screen and may actually be envious. But being tabloid fodder isn’t a template for a long career, and perhaps she is grasping that reality. She has certainly chosen her next projects well, including the high profile “Georgia Rule,” a dark comedy directed by Garry Marshall, in which she plays a woman sent by her mother (Felicity Huffman) to stay with her grandmother (Ms. Fonda).

And it was recently reported — accurately it turns out — that she has been in talks to visit Africa, Hollywood’s cause du jour, as part of the Bono-inspired “One Campaign.” O.K., it’s a move lifted straight from the Angelina playbook, and it won’t happen anytime soon because she’s booked up with work. But it’s helpful news to have floating out there. Even if it never happens, at least she’s moving up to a better class of rumor.

That Africa trip is just a vague idea now, and who knows if it will happen. Lohan could barely handle herself on Good Morning America and Total Request Live. How is she going to commit to a humanitarian mission?

Meanwhile Lohan is said to be pissed that she had to deal with ex-friend Vanessa Minnillo on Total Request Live. Lohan’s publicist was said to have thrown a fit before she went on, demanding that another VJ serve as host. There was no one else available and Lohan was stuck with her. You can tell that the two don’t get along if you watch the show. Minnillo makes references to being tired and Lohan seems annoyed with her.

Here she is at the premiere and after party last night.

Cameron Diaz tells Lindsay Lohan to put out her nasty cigarette

Now that our faith in the gossip industry is waning, we’re going to call it like we see it. (For a day or two at least.) The reporting paper where we read this tried to make out like Lindsay Lohan was in a catfight with Cameron Diaz since they both dated the same guy at some point, but it sounds like Cameron simply asked Lindsay to stop smoking when they were in the VIP section of a NY club together:

Star Magazine details the battle as it took place inside the VIP section of Shag club with this report.

Scarlett Johansson, Lindsay Lohan, and Cameron Diaz have a lot in common – including dating Jared Leto!

That fact still makes Lindsay seethe and she has made no secret of her ire for Scarlett – and even reportedly wrote some pretty nasty notes on an NYC bathroom wall about Scarlett…

On April 24th Lindsay also lashed out at Cameron Diaz, who asked her to stop smoking in the VIP section of Shag club. It really wasn’t about smoking but Lindsay’s lust after Jared Leto still a pal of Cameron’s.

There’s a lot of jealousy there!

Lindsay’s a nasty skank who thinks she can get away with whatever she wants. It’s been illegal to smoke in bars in NY for years now, so she should know better. She was probably pissed because she knew Cameron was right.

Meanwhile Lindsay still hopes to clean up her image with that humanitarian mission to Africa we told you about. She’s only considering it, doesn’t have a date planned, and it’s clearly all about making her look good:

“Lindsay truly does feel for those who are suffering from AIDS and who are poor — she genuinely feels she needs to pay something back to the world for the fortunate life she’s led,” said the insider. “At the same time, she wants to be taken seriously as a person, and she’s well aware of her image as a fluffy party girl. She sees working in Africa as a means to shed her ‘naughty girl’ reputation.

“Lindsay knows the esteem in which Angelina Jolie is held has increased immeasurably since she started her work with the poor for the UN — and she’d like to be seen as more than an airhead who doesn’t care about anything but partying…”

While Lindsay’s rep said no immediate trip to Africa is scheduled, the source added: “Lindsay’s ready to show a new, very human side — one that cares deeply about the problems in the world.”

Lindsay’s ready to try to get some good press for once is all.

Here she is in St. Paul, MN yesterday for the world premiere of A Prarie Home Companion. Stars were “carried in horse drawn carriages led by the Highland Park Senior High marching band down Wabasha St.”

Mission Impossible 3: Mexico City Press Conference and Premiere

Tom Cruise actually attended the Mexico City premiere of Mission Impossible 3 on Monday. He seems to care more about his fans than his wife and new baby. No other stars from the movie, not even secondary ones, appear in the premiere pictures so it can be assumed that he’s the only one who went. If I’m wrong let me know.

When asked about Suri at a press conference, he said: “The hours go by so quickly, as I just stare at her.” He also dismissed claims that he ate the baby’s placenta, calling them “ridiculous.” You said it, Tom.

Here’s a brief video of excerpts from Tom’s press conference in Mexico. He discusses MI3’s director, JJ Abrams, and baby Suri. He seems distracted, tired, and out of sorts.

And here are pictures of him basking in the attention.

Cruise to star in a movie with “Kate” Holmes

In one of his creepier quotes, Cruise reveals that he has renamed his girlfriend “Kate” Holmes, because that just sounds more motherly to him:

After discussing the issue with Cruise, Holmes has decided her Christian name ‘Katie’ sounds too young for a 27-year-old and is now known to friends and family as ‘Kate’.
Cruise explains, “Katie is a young girl’s name. “Her name is Kate now she’s a child-bearing woman.”

Sure Holmes decided to change her name, the one she’s been using her entire life and her entire career, just because it sounded better. My name is Katie too, and to me Kate always sounded like a nickname for a younger person. Whatever. Holmes has changed everything else for Cruise, she may as well let him call her what he likes, too.

And Cruise calls her “child-bearing.” That’s very specific, and very strange language that seems to add credence to the rumors that she was inseminated.

In an MTV interview to air Sunday, Cruise says he would give up his achievements for his kids. That doesn’t quite jibe with his actions lately. He also said he would like to star in a film with Katie Kate:

“If I had a choice between all my life’s achievements and my kids, it would be my kids every time, I’d give up everything else.”

“I’m very properly in love with Kate. She is amazing and spectacular and we can’t wait to get married now.”

“Katie and I have this ‘b and b’ thing down - she breast feeds and I burp and change nappies.”
“I don’t mind getting stuck in. I haven’t slept for a while, what with the new baby and the promotion for the movie, so it’s all a bit hectic, but a lot of fun. But I think baby Suri will be great. In fact I’d love to be my kids - they have a great life.”

He also mentioned plans to co-star in a movie with Katie: he starred in three films with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

“I can’t wait to do a movie with Kate,” he said. “I don’t think working together is a bad idea at all, a relationship can definitely work under that pressure if you like someone enough.”

Who says things like “I’m very properly in love?” That’s so strange and seems like an obvious put-on.

Cruise also attended the Paris premiere of MI3 yesterday. Michelle Monaghan attended, but the other big stars from the film were absent. Tom has a new baby at home but he still couldn’t stay away.

Here are pictures from the Paris premiere.

Tom Cruise says that tabloids that mock him have sad reporters

Tom Cruise has said that the gossip columnists who make fun of his erratic behavior are simply unhappy people:

He explains, “When I look at the people who write or say these things, I realise it’s not a lot of people doing it. “It’s just a few people, trying to take advantage of sensationalism.” The actor claims a few interviewers have tried to bait him into combative statements or behaviour, but insists, “You just have to be who you are.” He adds, “Because when I meet these people, they really seem unhappy to me. And that’s too bad. Because I’m happy.” The media glare has become so overwhelming recently that the star has been forced to have bodyguards accompany him to all of his press interviews. Cruise adds the attention, “seems to come in phases. This just seems a little more intense lately.”

Tom may have been referring to a recent interviewer who dared question Scientology’s ability to cure the reading disorder dyslexia, from which Tom admittedly suffers.

The conversation was all smiles until reporter Bjorn Benkow insisted that experts say that dyslexia cannot be cured by Scientology as Cruise has claimed. There was an awkward pause, then Cruise burst into laughter. “I’m going to, in any case, admit that you have the courage of a madman,” according to our translator. “This is something no journalist has dared say to me face-to-face. . . . Scientology is a religion without divinity. Its teaching is a spiritual liberation from life’s problems that can only be reached through advice, courses and deep studies. Your cynical media colleagues cast doubt over all the good that we do by spreading a bunch of hocus pocus about us.

Tom then got pissed when the reporter mentioned Kidman and his adopted children and stormed off. At least the re are foreign journalists willing to state the obvious about Scientology. Tom certainly can’t stand to be challenged, although he does give fabulous quotes!

Saying that someone is motivated by unhappiness is an obvious oversimplification. It’s like a mom telling her grade school child that the bully is jealous of him. Cruise should stick to vague, happy quotes and try not to get upset or bring any more attention to the fact that he looks like a fool to everyone.

And here he is at a press conference for Mission Impossible 3 in Rome, and at the London premiere last night. Yes, he did attend, and supposedly Katie gave him permission.

Other stars pictured at the press conference and premiere include Keri Russell, Michelle Monaghan, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and his supposed girlfriend, and Maggie Q.

Update: Cruise spent 4 hours talking to fans outside of the MI3 premiere in London last night!

Salma Hayek at the “Ask the Dust” European premiere

Salma Hayek stars with Colin Farrell in “Ask The Dust,” which opened in limited release in the US in March, and received mixed reviews. “Ask the Dust” is the story of the sadistic relationship between a struggling novelist and a Mexican waitress in the 1930s, and is based on the 1939 novel of the same name by John Fante.

The film opened in Madrid for its European premiere yesterday, and Salma Hayek attended. She also appeared at a photocall for the film today.

Hayek has said that she doesn’t like the Hollywood lifestyle and that she tries to avoid it by living on a farm in the country. She also says that she faced blatant discrimination as a latin-American actress trying to break into film. Hayek is now single after a string of long term relationships and is enjoying the process of finding herself.

Tom Cruise brags about changing diapers but he’s barely around

Tom Cruise told the crowd at the opening of Mission Impossible 3 in Rome yesterday that he loves changing his newborn’s diapers and revealed that Katie is breastfeeding:

According to the Daily Star, Cruise said to the Roman crowd: “My mission impossible was to be here today.

“My daughter was just born, and I didn’t want top leave her and her mother…”

He added: “I changed her first: I change diapers all the time. I have to tell you, I love it.

“We have a whole system worked out. It’s the B and B – she does the breastfeeding and I do the burping and changing the diapers. It’s teamwork. It’s fun.”

My husband changed our baby a lot right after he was born, too. It’s not that bad if they’re breastfed. At least Katie is breastfeeding. We were concerned that she would use the barley-based formula that L. Ron Hubbard recommended. We were also worried that the baby would be abandoned for its first day in accordance with Scientology tradition, but that may not have happened.

Cruise initially said that he had cancelled all promotional appearances for the film due to the birth of baby Suri, but must have been unable to stay away. He said Katie gave him permission to go to the premiere in Rome, but she may have done it half-heartedly, as Jaunted mentions:

“I wasn’t going to come and then Kate said, you know, ‘Go. Go.’ … So I’m here. And I’ll be here for a few hours and then I’ll get back on an airplane and go back home to Kate and Suri.

Something tells us it was one of those conversations where your girlfriend is saying you should go, but really means, don’t even think about it. Or it would have been, if he hadn’t upped Katie’s dosage first.

The London premiere of Mission Impossible is tonight. We’ll have to see if Tom attends that too.

Update: Cruise will be in London. Go figure.

Here are pictures of Tom in Rome yesterday at the MI3 premiere. He stood on top of a car to get a better view of the crowd. [via]

Carmen and Dave in PR overtime

We weren’t entirely convinced that Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro were having relationship trouble until we read an unsourced e-mail report on Egotastic. There’s something about those “I was there” stories that make them more convincing despite the fact that they’re quite easily fabricated.

Carmen teased her hair all up on Monday and attended two events with Dave. They were seen at the Scary Movie 4 premiere and at SAAB’s new concept vehicle launch in New York.

She insists that everything’s fine in their relationship, but we still remember how nervous she seemed on the Tonight Show when she deliberately avoided the question.

In this recent quote, she calls Dave her “friend,” which usually doesn’t bode well for a relationship:

Carmen Electra insists husband Dave Navarro is her best friend and that’s why their marriage is so successful. The actress previously had a string of bad relationships, including a failed marriage to basketball player Dennis Rodman and a romance with Prince, but has found true love with the rocker.

She explains, “He’s my best friend. He really lets me be who I am. It’s the first time I’ve ever been able to travel and go to work and feel comfortable and be able to sleep at night knowing that my friend loves me and isn’t hurting me. It’s really nice.

Electra does plan on starting a family but, despite tabloid reports, the couple is taking their time. She adds, “I do look forward to being a mom, but I’m not rushing it. But that’s what’s crazy, there have been so many stories in the tabloids that Dave and I breaking up and now I’m getting pregnant. I’m going, ‘Which is it?’”

She’s not convincing us, but they’ll probably work it out.

Here are pictures from the Scary Movie 4 premiere and one from the SAAB AERO X concept car launch. Other stars seen at the Scary Movie premiere include Simon Rex (who was booted from a party for trying to pee on the carpet according to Page Six), Regina Hall, and Anna Faris.

And here’s the trailer for Scary Movie 4. This is the most we will ever see of this movie.

Antonio Banderas and Alfre Woodard in “Take the Lead”

Antonio Banderas, his wife Melanie Griffith, and Alfre Woodard were among the stars at the NY premiere of “Take the Lead.” The film sounds like Dangerous Minds on the dance floor:

The film is based on the true story of Pierre Dulaine, and international dance teacher and competitor who volunteers his time to teach ballroom dancing to a group of inner-city high school students serving detention. Banderas plays Dulaine and Alfre Woodard co-stars as the New York high school’s tough principal.

It’s been called a “hackneyed charmer,” and “completey predictable, but charming” and is receiving somewhat decent reviews.

Banderas also visited MTV’s Total Request Live yesterday, where he showed host Vanessa Minnillo some of his moves.

Banderas has two projects in the works. He will “return to Broadway in a new musical based on the 1995 film, ‘Don Juan DeMarco‘” and will play the lead in a new historical epic, “Conquistador,” as the villianous Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes who defeated the Aztec empire in the 16th century.

8 more pictures after the jump.
