Will Kate Hudson turn A-Rod into a Buddhist?

Kate Hudson and Kurt Russell watch the New York Yankees play the Minnesota Twins in game 2 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium in New York City
Kate Hudson has become the patron saint of the Yankees. Since Alex Rodriguez began romancing Kate, his game has improved, he’s getting love from the fans, his teammates and the media. On Monday, I got caught up watching the game, which went into two extra innings. Normally, I wouldn’t care, but House was starting after the game, and I wanted to see if the camera went to Kate. I was rewarded with a glimpse of Kurt Russell, who seemed thrilled to be there and very supportive of Kate and A-Rod. Of course, I think I lent my own bad mojo to the game, because the Yankees lost the one time I cared enough to watch. Gah!

Anyway, it looks like Kate is going to stick with A-Rod, even if he doesn’t want her (I think he does want her, but that’s not my point). Kate is good for his game. And whatever she wants him to do, he’ll probably do for the sake of the game. Even if it involves Buddha and prayer beads:

Some kind of higher power must be watching over Alex Rodriguez in the Yanks-Angels playoff series — but he’s probably not sure which one.

A source close to the Bronx Bomber calls A-Rod a “religious chameleon” who lately has been flirting with Buddhism, thanks to girlfriend Kate Hudson.

“It’s an important part of her life,” says the insider about the religion of the slugger’s squeeze, who was raised as a Buddhist. “And it seems like Alex really just wants to make her happy.”

A spy sitting behind the blond bombshell at Yankee Stadium last Friday night (right behind the dugout, natch) says the actress even brought Buddha prayer beads with her to the game, carefully laying them across the railing in front of her seats. “It was a long strand of brown beads, and she and her friends would pick them up from time to time,” the fan said.

Her good-luck ritual must have worked. That night the Yanks crushed the Angels 4-1.

This isn’t the first time Rodriguez has gotten religious for a galpal. Previously, the heavy hitter had a stint with the ancient Jewish religion kabbalah while dating Madonna. A-Rod even went so far as to rub elbows with the sect’s NYC elite, including Kabbalah Center higher-ups Eitan Yardeni and Rabbi Michael Berg. But he left his red string and Hebrew lessons behind when he and Madge went their separate ways.

At the very least, Rodriguez’s brand-new interest in Buddhism is bound to help him hit a home run with Hudson’s family. Her mother, Goldie Hawn, is an active practitioner who has met the Dalai Lama. “Goldie more than approves of Alex,” says the insider. “If he becomes a Buddhist, it’ll only seal the deal.”

While a rep for A-Rod refused to comment and Hudson’s rep didn’t return calls, Yankee fans are sure to support anything that helps the team get into the World Series. Everybody say, “Om!”

[From Gatecrasher]

I get the feeling that A-Rod doesn’t have much going on in the intelligence or soul departments, and he just copies whatever his girlfriend does. But Buddhism and baseball? Stranger things have happened. And it cracks me up to think of Kate bringing out the prayer beads just so the Yankees will win.

Katie Holmes wins, Xenu loses: Suri enrolled in Catholic pre-school

fp_3785547_cruise_tom_fp2_1
This is one story from the Daily Mail that I really, really hope is 100% gospel. The Mail’s sources are saying that Katie “Zombie/Robot” Holmes stood up to Tom Cruise – and won! Allegedly, Katie put her foot down about Suri’s preschool education, and enrolled Suri in a Catholic pre-school rather than some Xenu-approved, Church of Scientology-affliated, barley water-drinking, Thetan-shunning, brainwashing academy. While the family is staying in Massachusetts (while Tom works on a film), Katie is making damn sure that Suri is getting a real preschool education. The Mail claims that Tom and Katie fought about it – but that Tom is going along with it for now:

Katie Holmes has won a battle with her Scientologist husband Tom Cruise to enrol their daughter Suri in a Catholic pre-school.

The Church of Scientology has always been a bone of contention between the couple and Tom wanted three-year-old Suri to be raised a Scientologist. But last week Katie enrolled the toddler at the Catholic Charities Yawkey Centre For Early Education And Learning in Boston, Massachusetts.

The family are living in the city while Tom, 47, films his new movie, the spy comedy thriller Wichita. Katie’s mother also flew in for her granddaughter’s first week at the pre-school.

‘Katie has been listening to her parents who are devout Catholics,’ I’m told.

‘She is not convinced by Scientology and has told Tom that she wants Suri to be educated as a Catholic – as she was. They had been having huge problems agreeing on her school. To say they were having arguments is putting it mildly – but Tom came around to the idea in the end.’

Holmes, 30, has not been seen at the Church of Scientology for more than five months. But Cruise, who was also raised Catholic but converted to Scientology in 1990, remains an ardent follower.

[From the Daily Mail]

While I hope this is true, something tells me that I shouldn’t hold my breath. Even if Suri is getting a taste of life without Xenu, that doesn’t mean that a few years from now her education won’t be totally CoS. Also, there have been rumors about Suri’s education for months now – once, another British source once claimed Tom and Katie were spending $1 million a year on special tutors and advanced classes for Suri, and I didn’t really buy that either.

In one other piece of Holmes-Cruise news, OK! Magazine (via Showbiz Spy) had a totally different spin on their relationship this week. While In Touch Weekly made it sound like their marriage was in danger because Tom wouldn’t just leave Katie alone with her zombie thoughts for two damn minutes, OK! claims that Katie is trying to convince Tom to lose weight – by having sex. With her. Not David Beckham.

A source told OK!: “Tom had been complaining about how hard it is to keep off the pounds, so Katie vowed to help him out… Katie read somewhere that you burn up 600 calories just by having sex three to four times a week. So she’s told Tom to think about how much they’d burn up if they put daily sex sessions on their schedule! Tom thinks the sex order is the best part of Katie’s diet plan, and he’s promised to up the bedroom romps whenever they are in the same town just for the sake of his diet!” Oh, for the love of Xenu. Yeah… I’m sure Katie and Tom both want to lose weight by having sex. That must be why all of the photos in the past few weeks have been of the two of them jogging. Methinks neither of them wants to try the “sex workout”.

Tom, Katie and Suri are shown out in Boston at the park on 10/10/09 and getting Starbucks on 10/11/09. Some of these shots are absolutely beautiful. Credit: Fame Pictures

Julia Roberts is pissing off Hindu faithful while filming in India

fp_3573374_uno_roberst_set_090909

Back in August, when Eat, Pray, Love was just about to start filming in New York, several prominent Hindu leaders took to the media to complain that the book – and now the movie – was in danger of showing a bastardized version of Hinduism in an attempt to rebrand the ancient religion as some trendy New Age crap. The leaders were doing some kind of pre-emtive strike against the movie, which at the time had yet to begin filming in India. My thoughts last month werethat if you found the book offensive to your religion, you would probably find the film offensive. The source material is what should be criticized, in my opinion, rather than the film.

Of course, I thought that before the film crew closed down a Hindu temple for filming right before Navratri. And before Julia Roberts hired a reported 350-person large security staff to protect her and her family. 350 security people? Seriously, Julia? Is she creating a human barricade around her hotel? The BBC has more:

Villagers in India have accused the Hollywood superstar, Julia Roberts, of interrupting one of their most important religious festivals.

They say that her huge film set in the town of Pataudi near Delhi has prevented them from celebrating the Navratri religious festival.

The Pretty Woman star used the Hari Mandir temple to shoot scenes of her new film, Eat, Pray, Love. Neither Ms Roberts nor the film makers has commented on the claims.

A spokeswoman for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which owns the production company making the film, told the BBC they did not want to say anything about the allegations.

Some locals are unhappy the actress is using the temple during the festival of Navratri, marked by Hindus through nine days of worship of the Goddess Durga.

Police say they are under strict orders to stop devotees from entering the temple while filming is under way because of security considerations.

The restrictions come at a sensitive time because a number of Hindu festivals take place in the autumn. One worshipper said: “It’s the holiest time of the year and we are being stopped from visiting our own temple. It’s outrageous.”

Eyebrows have also been raised at the scale of the security operation to guard the Hollywood star – some newspapers have described it as “presidential”.

Reports say she is also using a bullet proof car and a helicopter for protection.

Up until now, the star of Erin Brockovich and Notting Hill has been seen as one of the West’s most “Hindu-friendly” actors, even sporting a bindi spot during a visit to India earlier this year.

In Eat, Pray, Love, Ms Roberts plays a woman hoping to find herself in Hindu spirituality after experiencing a traumatic divorce. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gilbert.

[From BBC]

As much as I would love to give Julia a good thump for the closing of the Hindu temple, it’s not really her fault. I lay the blame at the producers who organized the film shoot at the temple during an important Hindu festival, and I blame whatever genius Hindu committee or organization for letting the film crew in. Someone had to give their permission, and that’s the person to blame. I will thump Julia for the 350-person security brigade. For goodness sake, she’s not shooting a film in the Northwest frontier, it’s just Delhi. Live a little, Julia. Mix with the locals for a day, it seriously won’t kill you.

Here’s Julia filming scenes on the set of “Eat, Pray, Love” in Rome on September 8th. Images thanks to Fame Pictures .

Carrie Prejean sues Miss CA pageant, claims religious discrimination

Atlanta Falcons vs St. Louis Rams pre-season football

Former Miss California (and Perez Hilton bête noire) Carrie Prejean is so mad! She’s so mad she’s going to throw a little temper tantrum through the California court system. She’s going to wail and cry and stomp her feet, and if that doesn’t work, she’ll probably drop to the floor of Wal-Mart and start rolling around, sobbing loudly. As you might have guessed, no one was paying attention to Carrie Prejean anymore, and she’s decided to sue the Miss California pageant. The charges include libel, infliction of emotional distress (she got a boo-boo on her psyche) and religious discrimination.

This is happening after most of us forgot about the insanity that is this whack-job’s martyr complex. After she got dissed by the pageant committee for being an insolent, unprofessional, lazy, hypocritical liar, her ass was saved by Donald Trump, who called her “strong, tough, smart and very beautiful.” Less than a month later (the second week of June), Carrie was fired, for good this time. When Carrie made some vague lawsuit threats when she was first fired, the Miss California pageant struck back quickly, giving a laundry list of reasons for why Carrie had not fulfilled her contract. They accused Carrie of “churlish insolent misbehavior,” “intolerable misbehavior,“ and “hostile communications.” They also had a record of Carrie turning down 39 pageant related appearances in one month. Of course, Carrie still thought she was persecuted and “set up” because of her conservative views. And now she’s got “evidence”:

Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean has filed a complaint against pageant officials, Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler, RadarOnline.com has learned.

The complaint, filed in the Superior Court of California, cites damages to Prejean including libel, public disclosure of private facts, religious discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

“To us it’s outrageous what happened,” Prejean’s attorney, Charles S. LiMandri, told RadarOnline.com exclusively. “There’s no doubt in our minds, that if she had answered that question at the Miss USA pageant differently she’d probably still be Miss USA right now, but she’d definitely still be Miss California.”

In a statement obtained by RadarOnline.com, Limandri explained: “Over the past two months we have worked hard to provide overwhelming evidence that Carrie Prejean did not violate her contract with Miss California USA and did not deserve to have her title revoked by Keith Lewis. We will make the case that her title was taken from her solely because of her support of traditional marriage. Keith Lewis has refused to clear her good name or even to admit any wrongdoing. Therefore, Carrie Prejean is left with no alternative but to take her case to court where she expects to be fully vindicated.”

A comment call to Shanna Moakler’s rep was not returned.

[From Radar]

Is it just me or does Carrie’s lawyer make it sound like the idea of proving that Carrie might have a legal leg to stand on is really, really difficult? I think it’s the way he says “…we have worked hard to provide overwhelming evidence that Carrie Prejean did not violate her contract…” (emphasis mine). Look, if you want to know what a liar this girl is, just see all of the crap she’s said over the past six months. She’s insane. And as far as the religious discrimination stuff… good Lord! Get off the cross, people need the wood. It’s an insult to the genuine religious persecution that goes on in the world.

Brad Pitt on Bill Maher: religion doesn’t work for me in long run

Brad Pitt on Bill Maher Part 1: Mostly about Make It Right NOLA, architecture

Brad Pitt on Bill Maher Part 2: Religion & smoking weed

To promote Inglourious Basterds, Brad Pitt stopped by Real Time with Bill Maher Friday night. Brad barely spoke about the film, though, instead taking some time to talk about marijuana, politics, religion, and Make It Right NOLA. You Tube has the interview in two parts, above. The first half of the interview is mostly about New Orleans and architecture, Part 2 is about religion and smoking the reefer.

One of my favorite parts of the interview was when Maher asked Brad about his recent comments to Ann Curry, that he doesn’t “have a chance” if he decided to run for New Orleans mayor, because his platform would include “gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform.” Brad told more to Maher:

Bill Maher: What is about religion that you don’t like?
Brad Pitt: I grew up in a religious family, in a religious community, and it just doesn’t make sense … for me. It doesn’t work for me in the long run. I never wanted to step on anyone else’s religion, beliefs, that’s what’s great about our country, until I started seeing it defining policy. Like gay marriage. You have a group of people telling other people how to live their lives, and you can’t do that. In fact, I’m talking like there are actually Christians watching your show…
Maher: No, there are. You’d be surprised.
Pitt: Well, to the three that are watching, I just say you have to, you really have to check what country you’re living in because the freedom that allows you to practice religion is the same freedom you’re stepping on. That’s not right. And I want to add… if there was a nation of gay married couples that were telling you you couldn’t practice your religion, I’d be speaking up for you, too… So, let’s stop the nonsense.

[Transcribed from Real Time with Bill Maher]

Also, when Bill Maher tells a story about how he and Brad were at a New Year’s party years ago, Bill saw Brad rolling “the most perfect” joints he had ever seen. Brad joked, “I’m an artist!” Maher asks why Brad gave up smoking weed, as Brad admitted to in his recent Parade interview, and Brad replied, “I’m a dad now. You want to be alert and my eyes used to glaze over when I did that.”

It was an interesting interview, and I was happily surprised by how much respect Maher and Pitt seemed to have for each other. Bill Maher is not a man who tolerates fools, and he seemed happy enough to let Brad talk for five minutes about Make It Right NOLA, and both Pitt and Maher seemed to hold back from making some harsh comments about various politicians. Maher did roll his eyes and groan a little when Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s name was mentioned, but Brad tamped it down.

Bollywood superstar held at New Jersey airport, claims racial profiling

Bollywood Revenue Share Discussion
Sharukh Khan (or Shah Rukh Khan, as he signs his name) may be relatively unknown in America, but he’s one of the biggest superstars in the world. He is like the George Clooney of Bollywood, the Indian film industry. He has won dozens of acting awards for his starring roles in more than 70 films and television programs, almost exclusively in India. He’s also a powerful Bollywood producer, and has been named one of the most powerful entertainers in the world by many international publications. He has received honorary awards and titles all over the world too – conferred the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka in Maylasia (it’s like a knighthood), and the French government gave him an Order of the Arts and Literature award.

There’s actually some debate about whether Khan is “the George Clooney of Bollywood” – that’s just how I think of him. People have called him “the Tom Cruise” or “the Brad Pitt” of Bollywood too. Any and all of them kind of fit – he’s the number one star of Bollywood films, and millions of Indians and Asians follow his comings and goings religiously. Speaking of religion, Khan is practicing Muslim. He’s also outspoken about his own faith, and the Hindu faith of his wife. His fans include Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians, and Khan is respectful of them all.

So, here’s what we know: international superstar Khan flew into New Jersey’s Liberty International Airport on Saturday. He was on his way to Chicago to promote his film My Name Is Khan, which is about racial profiling in America. He was also slated to attend an event to celebrate India’s Independence Day. But it was in Jersey when customs officers stopped Khan and held him for a disputed length of time. Also under dispute is Khan’s general treatment while being held, and if the whole incident should be called a “detention”. Here’s a good example of how the Indian media is handling the incident:

”My name is Khan.” ”Oh it is, is it? Step aside, please.”

The way it was related, that might well have been the opening exchange between Shahrukh Khan and an unnamed, uniformed, super-empowered US immigration official who had no idea (and didn’t care) that the man in front of him is the star of a film by the same name (My Name is Khan), much less that he is a universal Bollywood icon.

SRK, as the actor star is known by his popular acronym, was asked to indeed step aside for a ”secondary inspection” at Newark’s ironically named (in this context) Liberty International airport on Friday en route to an event to celebrate India’s Independence Day in Chicago, President Barack Obama’s hometown. But that was only after a ”primary inspection.”

A ”secondary inspection” is when the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officer manning the immigration counter asks a visitor (or even a US citizen) to move to a separate area for questioning if he cannot initially verify the visitor’s information or does not have all of the required documentation, so as to not hold up the rest of the queue.

It is not clear why Khan, who is a frequent visitor to the US, and only recently spent a month here shooting for “My Name is Khan,” was subjected to a ”secondary inspection,” which in itself does not constitute detention.

But the actor surmises that it was because of his last name; in other words, his Muslim identity. He was questioned for nearly two hours, asked what he thought were irrelevant questions, denied the use of his cell phone (which isn’t unusual; visitors cannot use mobile phones before clearing immigration) and was finally allowed to make just one phone call under the rules.

”I told them I was a movie star and had recently visited the country for the shooting of my film. Nothing seemed to convince the immigration officer. There were other immigration officers who even vouched for me but this particular officer did not listen to anyone. I even told them I had an invitation from the South Asian community and was there to attend an event.” Khan told ToI.

Indian and US officials rushed into damage control mode after word came in from Khan’s family that that the actor had been ”detained” and Khan’s vast fan base went ballistic. Timothy Roemer, the new US ambassador in New Delhi whose first week on the job it is, said he was trying to ascertain what exactly had happened at Liberty, and that Shahrukh Khan was a global icon whose film were much loved even by Americans and he was always welcome in the US.

But Khan, from all accounts, doesn’t feel so welcome and says he will review his plans to visit the US again. In a slew of media interviews after the incident, he said his papers were in order, it seemed to be a case of religious profiling, and the incident was a ”little embarrassing” for an entertainer of his stature. Khan’s upcoming film ”My Name is Khan,” a movie about an Indian Muslim setting out on a journey across the United States, is certain to get a boost after the incident.

It is not the first time that an Indian entertainer with a Muslim identity has been asked to step aside for additional scrutiny. Actors Aamir Khan and Irrfan Khan have had similar experience. So has the Canadian-Indian writer Rohinton Mistry, a Parsi, who once cancelled a book tour of the US soon after 9/11 because he felt he was being needlessly profiled. Other Indian visitors, not necessarily Muslims, have felt singled out.

But there is an American side to the story too. US officials who have spoken to this correspondent on the subject in the past feel that some Indian visitors are needlessly huffy about routine security procedures, and there is a broad cultural mismatch or misunderstanding between the two countries in their view of rules and authority. India, one official said, has too much of a ”VIP culture” that gives some people a false sense of privilege and entitlement that does not sit well in a world of ever increasing security threats. Even minor delays and inconveniences are exaggerated and conflated into major protocol breaches by some Indians.

For now though, the cry has already gone up in India for ”pay back” and subjecting US VIPs visiting India to the same treatment as the Khans say they get in US. Even senior government ministers have jumped into the fray. ”I am of the opinion that the way we are frisked, for example I too was frisked, we should also do the same to them,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told a news agency. Others have suggested the ”Brazilian model,” where Brazilia adopted similar security protocol as Washington, including photographing and fingerprinting visitors. Khan himself is said to have joked that Angelina Jolie must be subjected to the same treatment.

Of course, if Jolie or Clooney or Pitt (or Congressmen and Senators) are subjected to such treatment, it is unlikely we would ever hear about it — since they seldom make a to-do about such things. But then it is even less likely that they would be subjected to such a welcome, given the Indian mix of VIP culture and Athithi Devo Bhava – even at the risk of imperiling security.

[From Times of India]

The article also has more information on the tit-for-tat between India and America as far as security measures go, and there’s some international bickering that’s a little funny. I’m actually surprised that an Indian publication would go so far as to insinuate that Americans stars are more likely to roll with the punches, security-wise, while Indian stars are more demanding of special treatment. Fox News is reporting that the customs officials claim that Khan was only detained for 66 minutes, and that everything was done according to standard procedure, and Khan was absolutely “not detained”. According to the boys in Jersey, the real holdup was Khan’s lost baggage. Awesome – blame the whole incident on the baggage people and be done with it.

Hindu leaders worried about Julia Roberts & ‘Eat, Pray, Love’

fp_3365989_barm_roberts_jul
Many people described Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling travel/self-help memoir Eat, Pray, Love as good or great, insightful, interesting and funny. Many others described it as silly, narcissistic, hokey, a new-agey piece of trash, neo-colonialist, disastrous, cloying and according to the NY Post, “the worst in Western fetishization of Eastern thought and culture, assured in its answers to existential dilemmas that have confounded intellects greater than hers.” In case you don’t worship at the Temple of Oprah, Eat, Pray, Love is about Elizabeth Gilbert’s year-long journey to Italy, India and Indonesia after a bitter divorce. She eats in Italy, meditates in India, and has some kind of romantic liaison in Indonesia. The book was released in 2006, and got a huge bump in 2007 (when Oprah selected it for her book club) and remains a big bestseller. The movie rights were snapped up by… Plan B, Brad Pitt’s production company. Julia Roberts quickly signed on to star – and it’s filming right now. The film production is about to make it’s way to India very soon – which is what has people worried.

According to Page Six, it seems the backlash against the book and the film production has already begun in India. Hindu scholars are worried that Julia will attempt to make ancient devotional duties somehow pretty and Hollywood-y, and many fear the whole film will “incorrectly depict” Hindus and the Hindu faith:

INDIAN yogis and Hindu leaders are in a huff over fears that Julia Roberts’ upcoming movie, “Eat, Pray, Love,” will bastardize their religion and portray yoga as a crock of New Age mumbo jumbo.

Roberts is in New York this month filming scenes for the screen version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir, which details the author’s efforts to find spiritual enlightenment in Italy, India and Indonesia after she’d gone through a nasty divorce.

But shooting is scheduled in India for the third week of September, and has sparked concerns about whether the film will portray Hinduism and yoga authentically.

Most prominent among the skeptics is Rajan Zed, the head of the Universal Society of Hinduism, who’s led Hindu prayers in the US Senate. He said in a recent interview, “Hinduism and its belief system are quite often misunderstood and incorrectly depicted outside India.”

Zed added, “The people of India will be anxious to see how perfectly Roberts does her job of cleaning ashram floors as a part of her devotional duty, trying to recite 182- verse Sanskrit chant, and going through grueling hours of meditation, while being feasted on by mosquitoes.”

Producers have already disclosed that they won’t shoot “Eat, Pray, Love” at the same ashram where Gilbert studied, but instead will use one near Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is near the hotel where Roberts will stay.

The book was derided by The Post’s Maureen Callahan in December of 2007 as “narcissistic New Age reading” and “the worst in Western fetishization of Eastern thought and culture, assured in its answers to existential dilemmas that have confounded intellects greater than hers.”

Javier Bardem, James Franco and Billy Crudup are also on board to star. A rep for Sony said the studio had no comment.

[From Page Six]

I didn’t read the book and I have no desire to see the film, so my general feeling is “meh” on all sides. Do I think Hindu scholars have every right to worry, and to speak publicly about their concerns? Yep. Do I think the film’s portrayal in general of Hinduism (and Julia’s performance specifically) will be offensive? My guess is that if the book offended you, the film will offend you. If you thought the book was amazing, the film will probably be your wet dream (I imagine the Oprah audience, a sea of white, middle-aged, upper-middle-class women, screaming “JULIA!!”). You know what I mean? If anything’s offensive, it’s the source material, not the film. In any case, by making a big deal about the film, the Hindu scholars are ensuring that the India section will be more watered-down, aiming to offend no one.

Madonna/Esther writes “How My Life Changed” op-ed for Israeli newspaper

Madonna Performs In Madrid
Madonna wrote an op-ed for the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot, published today. From what I gather, Madge (Hebrew name: Esther) wrote the piece in English, and it was then translated into Hebrew for publication. The piece is called “How My Life Changed” and it’s all about Esther’s religious awakening 14 years ago, around the time she was pregnant with Lourdes (Hebrew name: unknown). It’s during that time that Madge/Esther got really involved with Kabbalah and started telling everyone she was Jewish now. She’s made several trips (or “pilgrimages”) to Israel, and has plans to bring her “Sticky & Sweet” tour to the holy land.

Lots of media sources are calling the op-ed a full-fledged “article”, but it just seems like a personal essay, albeit one published on the front page of a prominent Israeli daily:

MADONNA is now a newspaper columnist.

In a front-page bylined article in Israel’s Yediot Ahronot, the Material Mom says her life was changed by Jewish mystic Eitan Yardeni when she was pregnant with Lourdes 14 years ago.

“I suddenly realized that I spent my entire life worrying only about myself and soon I’ll be responsible for the life of another person,” she writes. “I started seeing that being rich and famous is not the end of the road, but only the beginning.”

[From Page Six]

I suppose we’re not going to get the full translation of the piece for a little while, but I can guess what it says. Stuff about how Madonna became a better person when she embraced her faith, how it influences her work, how it influences her family. Here’s the thing – I do believe Madge became a better, more fulfilled person with motherhood. But I still think, in her mind, everything is all about her. And how fulfilled are you as a person of humble, simple faith if you’re getting massive amounts of plastic surgery and working out your veiny, gristly man-arms five hours a day?

Tom Cruise David Beckham bromance: they share everything but Xenu

wenn2191230
David Beckham and Tom Cruise have a bromance for the ages. It’s almost as if they’re trying to compete with The Bromance of the Century, Brad Pitt and George Clooney (or “Pooney” as I like to call them). So Beckham and Cruise (“Buise”? Or “Crukham”?) have known each other since 2003. Since they first met, they’ve totally been BFF, according to a new book about Beckham.

With Cruise’s encouragement, Beckham joined CAA (Creative Artists Agency), got the same PR firm as Cruise, were introduced to all of Tom’s Hollywood friends, and even named his son “Cruz” as a play on his bromance-buddy’s name. The only love Tom and David haven’t shared – except for, you know, that love - is the love of Xenu. Becks claims that Tom has never tried to force Xenu on him, and that Tom gets that Posh and Becks have got “their own” faith.

David Beckham and Tom Cruise are going to be besties for life.

In “The Beckham Experiment,” Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl devotes nearly an entire chapter to the bromance between the soccer stud and A-list actor. To hear Becks tell it, Cruise has influenced every major decision he has made since the two met in 2003.

Both David and his wife, Victoria, who celebrated their 10th anniversary on Saturday, shared the “Mission: Impossible” actor’s rep, CAA, and at Cruise’s urging, also hired his L.A.-based PR firm, Rogers & Cowan.

When the couple relocated to L.A., they moved – where else? – just five minutes from Cruise’s home with Katie Holmes on San Ysidro Drive in Beverly Hills. TomKat even hosted the Beckhams’ “Welcome to L.A.” party, with Cruise making the haul from Germany, where he had been filming “Valkyrie.”

In addition, Beckham says he talks to his best mate most days of the week and takes his advice on nearly everything. Tom was influential in Becks’ decision to take a job with the L.A. Galaxy. He also recommended Beckham’s physical therapist and introduced him to another superstar pal, Will Smith.

The Cruise/Beckham families have hung out at Tom’s home in Telluride, Colo., spent Thanksgiving together in NYC and drank loads of wine in Napa while celebrating Victoria’s 34th birthday last year.

Cruise even influenced Beckham’s decision in naming his third son, Cruz.

“I must admit, when [Victoria and I] met Tom, I remember turning around to Victoria and saying, ‘Cruise is a great name, but we could spell it different,’” Beckham told Wahl for the book, due from Crown Publishing on Tuesday. “And also, living in Spain, Cruz is spelled the way it is in Spanish. So that’s why we got it.”

One thing the brothers from another mother don’t share, however, is a love of Scientology. Beckham is adamant that he has no interest in his pal’s faith. “It’s something I respect, because Tom’s explained to me and Victoria what it’s all about. But he’s never turned around and said, ‘That is what you should be doing,’ because he would never do that. He and Katie have their beliefs … but me and Victoria have also got our own.”

Posh and Becks are Catholic, right? Ah, that’s the same problem Tom had with Nicole Kidman, her Catholic faith. Katie Holmes was raised a Catholic too, but it looks like the barley water took, and Katie has been properly zombified by Xenu. The Pope is like the official Xenu-crusher, but there’s hope yet! So, which do you think Tom Cruise would rather: convert Becks to Scientology, or convert Becks to the love that dare not speaks its name? I joke, I joke. I actually like the Becks-Cruise bromance, it’s cute. They seem more invested in one another than Pooney.

Kendra Wilkinson: I will be a strict Christian mother

wenn2471585
My mother and I recently found ourselves talking about Hugh Hefner’s ex-girlfriends Holly, Kendra and Bridget. It wasn’t a subject I thought my mother would enjoy, but she began to ask me, in that gossipy way that must be a particular gene, what I thought about Kendra’s wedding. I believe my mom’s words were “Can you imagine having that for a daughter-in-law?” And I really couldn’t. Not that Kendra really strikes me as a mean or evil person, she just strikes me as profoundly dumb and unaware of the world beyond her own narrow perspective. She also doesn’t seem to have a lot of self-awareness, so that makes for some interesting and unintentionally funny interviews.

Now, Kendra’s new husband and baby-daddy Hank Baskett comes from a very religious, very conservative family. We’ve already heard how Kendra has “changed” since she met him – apparently, Hank makes Kendra “pray” before every meal. Now Kendra is talking about her plans to raise their child in a strict Christian household:

Now that Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett are officially husband and wife the reality show duo is focusing on the next important phase – parenthood.

While Hugh Hefner’s 23-year-old former flame has led a pretty wild life (besides being Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend, the number of times she’s revealed her assets in public is well into the double digits), and said earlier this year that Baskett was helping her find God for the first time, she is determined to be a strict religious mama.

“Our child will definitely be Christian,” Wilkinson told Tarts last week, with Basket adding that they are going to be “very strict” yet still “spoil” their young ones at appropriate times.

“But they are going to have to earn it, we’re not just going to hand it to them. Most importantly, they have to keep good grades because school comes first and then everything else after that,” he explained. “Being a father is something I’ve always wanted and something Kendra and I have talked about from the time we met, we’re just truly excited and truly blessed to be becoming parents very soon. We pretty much fell in love right away and when you ask someone to marry you that means you really want them to be the woman in charge of your family, the person to be your teammate in raising the child.”

Although the expecting parents won’t find out until a few weeks what their first born’s gender is, they already have names prepared.

“If it’s a boy Hank the 4th and if it’s a girl Arianna, we love Arianna,” Wilkinson enthused. “I’m feeling so good, I’m in my 2nd trimester now at 14 weeks and I’m feeling like a whole new person, I feel great.”

[From Fox News]

How much can you really change another person? In a few years, after the new-marriage smell wears off, won’t Kendra be back to shedding her clothes and doing sudsy shower dances in Las Vegas? Did Hank marry Kendra thinking that he would get the best of both worlds – the Playboy bunny and the conservative Christian wife and mother?
