Sienna Miller & Rumor Willis win big at ShoWest Awards

showest awards 2 030409

The ShoWest Awards were handed out last night, and the list of winners is a little mind-boggling. Sienna Miller? Zac Efron? Rumor Willis? Since ShoWest is a convention of theatre owners, they tend to give out awards to actors who put people in the seats. Is that Sienna? I thought theatre owners would describe Sienna as “box office poison.” How interesting. Here’s a list of some of the big awards:

Independent Award for Excellence – Patricia Clarkson
Best Supporting Actress – Sienna Miller
Male Star of Tomorrow – Chris Pine
Director of the Year – Zac Snyder (Watchmen) & Michael Bay (Transformers)
Female Stars of Tomorrow – Rumor Willis and the cast of Sorority Row
Lifetime Achievement Award – Michael Caine
Comedy Star of the Year – Bradley Cooper
Male Star of the Year – Dennis Quaid
Female Star of the Year – Rachel McAdams
Breakthrough Star of the Year – Zac Effron

USA Today has a lengthy article about the awards, and they got quotes from many of the winners. I’m just going to hack this thing to pieces to get some of the best quotes:

For Zack Snyder, who received director of the year honors for Watchmen, the gala was a welcome respite from the stress of watching his film’s disappointing reception at the box office and with critics.

“I wish I had gotten this award before the movie came out,” he says. “Might have made things easier.” The $120 million film, which has grossed $105 million but is fading fast, has been seen as one of the year’s few box office flat-liners. But Snyder says he isn’t dwelling on ticket sales.

“Monsters vs. Aliens opens to $59 million and it’s a huge success,” he says. “We open to $55 million and it’s considered a flop. There’s no rhyme or reason to it.”

Michael Caine couldn’t agree more. The winner of the gala’s lifetime achievement award says it’s the 10th such trophy he has received for his 53-year career.

“I can’t tell if they just are appreciating my work, or asking me to retire,” he joked. “Either way, I’m not listening to them.”

Bradley Cooper, on the other hand, is all ears. The star of The Hangover, about four men who wake up after a night of debauchery, had the ShoWest crowd laughing — and gasping — after a scene in which an infant is conked on the head by a car door.

“I can’t wait to hear how people react,” says Cooper, winner of the comedy star of the year award. “There were times when we were making this movie and I was thinking, ‘There’s no way this is going to make it in the movie.’”

Sienna Miller [winner of the best supporting actress award, took a break] from her smaller-budgeted films to star in G.I. Joe.

“It was a strange experience,” she says of the commercial film, which includes myriad computer-generated effects she hasn’t yet seen. “I never had to duck in front of a green screen, pretending to dodge something that wasn’t there. But it is nice to get an award before the movie’s even out. I wonder if they’d do that with the Oscars. It takes the pressure off.”

Dennis Quaid, who narrates the upcoming animated sci-fi flick Battle for Terra3D and appears in G.I. Joe, collected the statuette for male star of the year.

“Isn’t this award for Innerspace?” he cracked. While Quaid’s movies have taken in a combined $1.3 billion at the box office, he hopes ShoWest’s attendees are prepared for the recession to hit Hollywood, even though the industry tends to flourish in economic downturns.

“What’s different this time around is the studios are owned by corporations,” he says. “And they’re already scaling back production. You can’t help but worry a bit, though I’m trying to stay positive.”

For Zac Efron, ShoWest’s breakthrough performer of the year, the only injury to worry about is at the box office.

“I really wanted to come here and meet the people who run the theaters,” says Efron, who next stars in the comedy 17 Again, opening April 17. “These are the people who really help decide how successful your career is.”

[From USA Today]

I’m ambivalent about most of these award-winners. Patricia Clarkson and Michael Caine are the obvious exceptions – those two should get every award, all of the time. And I do have some affection for Chris Pine, but it’s not like he’s Gerard Butler or anything. But Zac Efron, Sienna Miller and Rumor Willis? What a joke.

Rumer Willis shows off cute new look and new tattoo

Rumer Willis debuted a much-improved look on the red carpet for the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party last night. She’s let her hair grow out a bit to a more flattering length and was wearing it in a style that fit her face better. She was also sporting a new tattoo that says, “Be Present,” in a pretty script. Rumer’s always had a killer body, but she managed to accent it with just the right dress so it really stood out. All in all she pulled off her look really well.

Rumer Willis is famous for her fashion disasters, but the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore finally got it right at the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party where she turned heads in a barely there black dress which showed off her new toned figure.

The revealing outfit also revealed a tattoo which reads ‘be present’.

Rumer was also sporting a new red hair colour at the event in Los Angeles County Museum of Art and her slender frame.

[From the Daily Mail]

I really love the Daily Mail’s quickly put together stories. That last sentence makes it sound like the event was held at the Museum of Art and in her slender frame. They also originally wrote her tattoo said “Be Prepared.” Because nothing says “cool tattoo” like a Boy Scout motto.

It seems like Rumer’s growing into herself and learning what works for her and what doesn’t. We all have our body issues to deal with, and it can take some time and adjustments to figure out how to conceal or complement them. Rumer’s had to do that in front of the cameras. Luckily it looks like she’s finding a style that works for her.

Rumer Willis says dad Bruce’s macho act is a put on

Star Magazine has a new interview with Rumer Willis, the 20 year-old oldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. Rumer talks about her supportive family, including her stepfather, Ashton Kutcher, 30. Rumer had her first major movie role in the comedy The House Bunny, which was out in late August. The film did decent business at the box office, with a domestic take of $42 million so far.

Rumer says it’s always been her dream to go into show business, but that she knows she “definitely” doesn’t “fit the Hollywood mold.” She also admits to having a crush on her stepdad. This is similar to a quote she recently gave Cosmopolitan, so she either has talking points or she gave this interview in a press conference.

Growing up with such famous parents, did you hope to follow in their footsteps?
I grew up around sets and always dreamed of acting and singing. But’s never been about me. I’ve always been an outsider, looking in at what my parents were doing. So to be able to work on my own films recently has been a really exciting chapter in my life.

What was it like when Ashton joined your family?
It was definitely strange when my mom got together with Ashton, because he was a heartthrob to me. My mom said that her new “friend” Ashton was going to come hang out with us. And I said “Whoa, wait, Ashton Kutcher?” and I kind of freaked out a bit. I definitely blushed.

How did you get over your crush on him?
I got over any strangeness because I’d never seen my mom happier. It was like watching two 16 year-olds who were going to the prom together and totally in love…

Has your dad, Bruce, been comfortable with your own dating?
My dad pretends he’s macho and tells people about how he vets our boyfriends and is really touch, but it’s not true at all. It’s totally an act. He’s always so sweet to my boyfriends…

What’s your personal style?
I know I definitely don’t fit the Hollywood mold, the classic blond girl next door. I love vintage ’40s style. I also love tattoos. I have a sparrow on my shoulder, a rosary on my finger, and another that reads, “Be Present,” down the left side of my back.

What’s a typical Saturday night for you?
I am not a party girl, whatever people may think. My ideal Saturday night is hanging out with a great group of friends. We sit around and play Catch Phrase or Celebrity. I try to surround myself with people who want to have fun. It’s not about being in a scene and being famous.

[From Star Magazine, print edition, September 22, 2008]

JayBird likes to make fun of Rumer, and I can’t entirely blame her, but the more interviews I read with her the more she’s growing on me. She has a great head on her shoulders despite all the attempts to point out how angular it is. Did any of you see House Bunny (it’s not out here yet) and did Rumer do a competent job? The film did not get great reviews, but it sold enough tickets and that’s what matters in Hollywood.

Rumer Willis blames dad Bruce for her jaw

I like to blame my parents for as much as humanely possible. In fact once or twice a week I’ll scan my old memory bank to see if there’s anything new I can dredge up and stick on one of them. More often than not I can figure something out if I look really hard. Rumer Willis is one of those unfortunate girls that doesn’t have to look all that hard to find a pretty big thing to be mad at her parents for. Specifically her dad Bruce.

Rumer is supposedly well-aware of the comments people make about her looks – specifically her “potato head.” And while everything north of her neck does resemble a potato with a similarity that can only be described as extremely unfortunately, it’s really the jaw that ruins everything. And that – as anyone can see – is entirely Bruce Willis’ fault.

Rumer Willis blames her father Bruce for her angular jaw. The 20-year-old star – the daughter of ‘Die Hard 4.0′ star Bruce and his ex-wife Demi Moore – can’t stand her unusually large chin, and thinks she inherited it from her dad.

She said: “People tell me all the time that I look my mom. I see the resemblance, sometimes. There was a picture in a magazine about look-a-like mothers and daughters and I saw that I looked exactly like her – which is great.

“I hate my jaw. I don’t know if it’s my dad’s – I think I’m more like my mother, my littlest sister looks exactly like my dad and my middle sister is a mixture of the two.”

[From Female First]

Um, kiddo you look exactly like your dad. You may have your mom’s coloring – which is what people tend to notice and comment upon first. But you couldn’t look more like Bruce if you shaved your head. And it isn’t just the chin, it’s the eyes too. They shape is debatable, but they’re way too small for her overall head size, and that seems to come from Bruce too.

The funny thing is that all those features could come together to look so incredibly hot on one gender, yet look so atrocious on the other. Lots of kids look more like their opposite gendered parent – though most of us look like a mix of the two. But I think the key is that you look like a “your gendered” version of that parent. Your dad’s nose gets feminized or your mom’s eyes become a little more masculine. When nothing changes and you’re a carbon copy except for your genitalia… it’s just not going to look good.

I will point out that she’s not doing herself by wearing that short, pixie haircut. It’s cute on some girls but in her case only draws even more attention to her jaw. These pictures show how much better she looks with a softer haircut. Images thanks to Fame.

Rumer Willis hates her name; denies lesbian rumors

It’s really hard not to make fun of Rumer Willis. I mean it is so freaking easy. Anytime a famous male celebrity produces a female offspring that looks exactly like him, it takes an unnatural amount of restraint not to make fun of the girl’s appearance. Same problem with Brooke Hogan. With both Rumer and Brooke, it’s like their mothers didn’t even exist. Somehow their dad’s hatched them and slapped a wig on their heads and shoved them out into the world, forever to be mocked for their strong jaw lines.

But Rumer claims that her problems aren’t because of her prominent, unformed chin or odd head-to-facial-features ratio. No, her problems are all because of her name.

Rumer Willis used to hate her name. The daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis tells this Sunday’s Page Six Magazine that when she was 12, she realized she “got screwed.” “My sisters, Scout and Talullah, had cute nicknames,” she says. “When I was 12 and had crushes on guys, I’d put my first name with their last name, but it never sounded right. Rumer Depp? Nope. In school, kids would sing, ‘Rumer, Rumer with a big hairy tumor.’ ” She also says she was shocked to be named one of People’s 100 Most Beautiful People this year: “After being compared to Jay Leno for so long, you don’t think of yourself in that way.”

[From the New York Post]

I’d never thought of the tumor angle. I’ve been more focused on her potato-like shape. As much as people mock her looks, I’d kind of naively hoped that Rumer was unaware of the jokes. Supposedly she’s still got quite the attitude about her, so I thought somehow she’d shunned the internet or her parents had installed some kind of blocking chip.

Rumer also says she’s aware of the rumors that she’s a lesbian – and that while she isn’t gay, the gossip doesn’t bother her.

Rumer Willis is happy to let gossips spread false rumors she is gay, because it gives her something to laugh about. The single actress, who is the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, insists she is most definitely not a lesbian, but isn’t threatened by the suggestions she prefers girls to boys.

She tells the forthcoming issue of Page Six magazine, “If people call me a lesbian because I have short hair and I wear jeans instead of dresses, then by all means run with it. I think it’s hilarious. I like guys.”

[From Starpulse]

If that’s all it takes to be a lesbian then I know at least 30 more girls who are gay then I thought. Appearance-wise I don’t think Rumer does herself any favors with the short hair – again it emphasizes the jaw line and her unnaturally similar appearance to her father. But she seems to think it works for her and is happy – and appears to do a good job of ignoring the negative gossip. More power to her. Or some hash browns. Whichever.

Rumer Willis: I know I’m not a conventional beauty

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s oldest daughter Rumer Willis, 19, has a great body but she’s often made fun of for her facial features, which – to put it lightly – are prominent. JayBird mentioned everyone’s proclivity to pick on Rumer’s appearance when she covered a story about Rumer’s potential hookup with Josh Hartnett in February. She said “I try not to make fun of Rumer Willis too much, because everyone does it, and she can only help how she looks so much. She’s the spitting image of her father, and that face shape works a little better on a man than a woman. There’s nothing she can do about her jaw, it is what it is.”

Rumer knows she’s not a cookie cutter beauty, but she says she’s happy with herself and “that’s all that matters.” She shared her thoughts on beauty with In Touch and she sounds mature and level-headed about it:

“There’s so much pressure to look a certain way, and I don’t fit the convention. But it’s okay if you’re not the perfect picture…

“Everyone can feel out of place, but it’s not about whether you’re popular or nerdy. As long as you’re comfortable with yourself, and your friends and family love you, that’s all that matters…

“I’m really fortunate and wouldn’t be the same person if my parents hadn’t worked [out their divorce amicably] and if Ashton hadn’t been so wonderful.”

[From In Touch, print edition, July 21, 2008]

You can’t fault the girl for that and she doesn’t even mention the nastiness some of us online, including us, have lobbed at her square jaw. She’s like “whatever, I’m happy.” She has also removed her really bad-looking hair extensions and that helps a lot. She’s richer than we’ll probably ever be and she’s working what she has. Life is good for Rumer, egg-shaped head or not.

Compare Rumer’s statements saying she’s happy and content not being a standard beauty with Katie Holmes saying she’s always going to battle her thighs. One of them is more traditionally “pretty,” but the other sounds more content with herself and not so worried about what other people think.

Rumer Willis and Pete Wentz for Op Walmart clothing

Young celebrities Rumer Willis, Pete Wentz, Wilmer Valderamma, Kristin Cavallari, Christina Milian, Josie Maran, and Corbin Bleu are starring in new ads for Op clothing, in a line that will only be available at Walmart stores.

Does that look like Rumer Willis at all to you in the header? That’s one of the official photos, and unless someone told me I never would have guessed it was her. It could be the, uh, angle of the photo, but her face just doesn’t look the same.

Here’s part of the press release along with some behind the scenes photos from the OP Website.

The campaign has a classic Op feel with the celebrities hanging out at the beach, at a ghost-town ranch and hitting the “OPen Road” in a vintage VW bus. Bringing back Op’s signature heritage pieces from the 70s, but with a younger, hipper flair, the seven celebrities showcase the collection in a
variety of upbeat, light-hearted scenes. They form a human pyramid, ride bikes and skateboards and play in the surf. The on-set chemistry was infectious and all relished in their roles as California kids on a road trip, even riding in one trailer from set to set.

Rumer Willis stated, “When you think of LA and the classic surfer beach vibe, you think of Op. The Op collection does a great job representing that lifestyle.”

Pete Wentz stated, “Everyone can wear Op and its cool. Fashion should make you comfortable and that is what Op does.”

In addition to the campaign, the celebrities will host a launch party in California later this spring and make personal appearances on behalf of the brand.

[PRNewsWire via Gossip Rocks]

It’s not a bad idea to make a young celebrity soup and have them all represent a clothing line. I’m surprised Op is still around, though. I remember wearing those graphic t-shirts in eighth grade.

And as for Wilmer Valderrama, it’s nice to see that his career is about on par with Rumer Willis. He hasn’t done much since he told Howard Stern all the dirt on his female partners. He’s had a few crappy films, and is also the voice of preschooler favorite “Handy Manny” on the Disney Channel. He also has his own clothing line, Calavena, which he claims is designed to help men emphasize their chests and hide their asses. It is no longer carried at Kitson.

Did Josh Hartnett hook up with Rumer Willis?

rumersundance1.jpg

I find secret celebrity hookups endlessly fascinating. Especially when it’s a hookup that seems really random, like when Cher admitted that she and Tom Cruise dated for “about a minute” in the eighties. Josh Hartnett was last linked to Kirsten Dunst, when the two were spotted making out at a club at the Sundance Film Festival. Which of course makes sense, because it’s not like they could go somewhere private or afford to get a room or anything. A short time later Kirsten checked herself into rehab, which just goes to show that nothing good can come from making out with Josh Hartnett. As Kirsten appears to be otherwise occupied, Josh has quickly moved on to a new make out buddy – Rumer Willis.

When we heard Josh Hartnett was getting intimate with a certain celebuspawn, we thought it could only be a rumor… Rumer Willis that is! After making out publicly with Kirsten Dunst, 25, during the Sundance Film Festival, Josh, 29, decided to make “friends” with Rumer, 19, at NYC hot spot the Beatrice Inn on January 29th. “Josh and Rumer were hanging out all night,” says a source at the Beatrice. “They seemed to be getting pretty cozy, and then they left together.”

[From the National Enquirer, print edition, February 18, 2008]

Josh Hartnett has… “interesting” taste in women. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill Hollywood bombshell type. Though that could also be said to his credit. I try not to make fun of Rumer Willis too much, because everyone does it, and she can only help how she looks so much. She’s the spitting image of her father, and that face shape works a little better on a man than a woman. There’s nothing she can do about her jaw, it is what it is. And to her credit, it doesn’t seem like she lets it get to her.

Josh Hartnett has really gotten the reputation of being a bit of a cad. I remember when he first became famous, there was this big deal made of the fact that he was still with his high school girlfriend. Since then it seems like he’s gone through a woman a month. Josh, when girls go into rehab right after hooking up with you (and their friends note that they were in a “really dark place”) you might want to start making out in a place with a little more privacy. Maybe a bathroom stall like the rest of us.

Introducing Miss Golden Globe 2008

Rumor Willis is to be Miss Golden Globe 2008. Now, I must confess to never having heard of this title, but I can tell you there is no pageant involved. Rather, you need to be the spawn of at least one famous parent. Son or daughter is okay, and I guess not married, given the title is Miss if you’re female. Seems to be a prize which you don’t have to do very much to actually win, just be born, but if you aren’t born to the right parents you are out of the draw.

So what does Rumor’s participation in the event involve? Handing out those pointy golden trophies to the winners, and looking glamorous while doing it of course.

Maintaining the tradition of having a child of Hollywood royalty in charge of handing out the prize at hand, Rumer Willis was named Miss Golden Globe 2008 on Wednesday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Willis, the 19-year-old daughter of two-time Globe nominee Demi Moore and four-time nominee – and winner for the TV series Moonlighting – Bruce Willis, follows in the footsteps of such illustrious names as 2007′s presenter Lorraine Nicholson (Jack’s pride), 2004′s Lily Costner (Kevin’s kid) and 1995′s John Clark Gable (son of Clark).

People

Rumer’s previous red carpet appearances may have only been due her famous parents, while this time she’s got an actual job at an awards ceremony… as a result of her famous parents.

Sadly for Rumor, who has her own developing acting career, she’s obviously not going to be nominated for any awards this year if she’s Miss Golden Globe.

Here’s a list of the previous Golden Globe trophy presenters, including a young Melanie Griffith.

Globes will be broadcast 13th January, and Steven Spielberg will be awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his “outstanding contribution to entertainment”.

Picture note by Celebitchy: Rumer Willis is shown on 11/7/07 at the DKNY Delicious Fragrance Launch Party in NY. Thanks to WENN and PRPhotos for these pictures.

Rumer Willis thinks she’s famous, & it’s a ’24-hour job’

gla-001290.jpg

Today in delusional celebrities: Rumer Willis thinks she’s famous. And her fame is a big responsibility. According to her. The girl best known for looking a lot more like her father than her mother dropped out of college last year and has since become an actress. I think when your parents are Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, you can in fact become an actress in under six months time. None of Rumor’s movies have come out yet, so calling herself an actress is a bit of a stretch. But the Moore/Willis clan has always been known for their hubris. So far it seems Rumer is still most famous for being the kid of someone famous – not exactly time to phone the editors at People to tell them your tips for handling fame. But common sense never got in the way of self-promotion.

Rumer Willis is ready to accept the ’round-the-clock responsibility of being famous. Presented over the weekend with a Rumer Willis Polly Pocket Doll – which she helped auction off for $5,500 to charity – at the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation’s annual Dream Halloween benefit in Santa Monica, Calif., the 19-year-old (and eldest) daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, joked, “I feel like I’m really famous now.”

But when it really comes to the fame game, Willis – who has become a gossip-blog fixture in recent months – tells PEOPLE, “Before I started working, I would have said, ‘You know, it’s not really fair, because I didn’t choose this.’ But when you decide to be a part of this profession and put yourself out there, then you kind of have to accept what it is.” Willis says that her famous parents – including stepdad Ashton Kutcher – aren’t worried about her, even though being a celebrity means having a very public life. “I think they know that I’ve had great role models,” she said.

Still, notoriety does offer its obstacles. “It’s a 24-hour job,” she says. “It doesn’t matter if you are going out to a restaurant – you have to be aware of what you are doing and how you look and how you are presenting yourself, because most of the time people never get to know you.” But at its heart, she says of celebrity, “Being famous isn’t going to parties … it’s about being able to use the power that we all have to kind of give back.”

[From People]

Giving back? When was the last time that family was known to give anything back? I haven’t really heard one way or the other about Bruce, but for the last fifteen years I’ve heard how completely rude Demi Moore is to fans and people in general. There’ve been reports of her snapping at customers in restaurants who she thought were looking at her (God forbid). The kids are supposedly spoiled and rude too, though I’ve heard Ashton is remarkably polite. If so, it must be pretty embarrassing to be seen with this clan. I’m guessing all the middle-aged sex and Demi’s great knees make up for it though.
