Last week, Us Weekly was the first to report that Katy Perry and Russell Brand got engaged as they vacationed in India. This was later confirmed by both Brand and Perry, to various media outlets. Katy and Russell have only been dating for a few months, having perhaps their first hookup at, during or shortly after the 2009 VMAs last September. Even though it seemed very sudden, my most immediate thought was simply “crazy kids, it won’t last but it will be fun.” It didn’t even occur to me that the engagement was some kind of ode to old-fashioned tradition, because Katy Perry might be knocked up with a little Brand baby! Oh, God:

Either we’re reading too much between the Tweets, or the 25-year-old “Kiss the Girl” singer is sprinkling clues she’s having a baby with new fiancé Russell Brand.

It started with her Jan. 1 message: “Let me tell you 2010 is BUMPIN!” Then on Friday, Perry wrote, “Hey @rustyrockets” – Brand’s Twitter name – “i heard ur prego-ed.” She adds, “I WANT IN AND OUT,” a Southern California hamburger chain, before telling Brand, “I love you … (awwwww barf!).”

Bump, prego, cravings, barf? It was all very cryptic, but then it was only a few days ago that Perry made oblique song lyric references on Twitter – before Brand came out and confirmed they were engaged on New Year’s Eve.

I’ve tried to figure out if Katy and Russell’s tweets are the only “evidence” of a possible pregnancy, and I think that’s what everyone’s basing their stories on. It’s interesting, I guess. I mean, if she is pregnant, God bless. If she isn’t, that’s fine too, no judgment. I doubt either of them will be the best parents in the world, but they won’t be the worst either. It could be a fun experiment for them, I guess. And Katy’s pregnancy could explain why Brand looks so weird lately. In photos of Brand from the past week, he doesn’t really look… thrilled with the turn of events. More like “shell-shocked.”

By the way, Russell and Katy stepped out in London a lot over the past few days, and photographers got some snaps of Katy’s ring. It doesn’t look huge, but it’s pretty. I think it looks like an estate piece, which is nice if Russell picked it out:

Call me an old softie, but I think one of the cutest new couples to emerge from last year is Russell Brand and Katy Perry. True, I didn’t think it would last, and true, I still don’t think it will last. But while it’s still happening, I enjoy them together. They’re kind of adorable together. And now we get to enjoy it even more – Us Weekly is reporting that the two are engaged! Of course, this hasn’t been confirmed by either’s rep, but rather “sources” tell Us Weekly that Russell popped the question while they were on vacation in India. That’s so… sweet. I’m being serious!

The wacky pair — who’ve been dating since September 2009 — became betrothed five days ago while on holiday in Jaipur, India. A pal says that Brand, 34, proposed with a ring, and that Perry, 25, happily accepted.

On Twitter Dec. 29, the pop singer shared a sweet snapshot of her and the British comedian in front of India’s famed Taj Mahal. “He built this for me,” she wrote beneath the photo.

The exotic trip, a Perry insider tells Us, “was his Christmas gift. She told him how much she loved Indian culture while they were eating curry in England, so he surprised her.”

On New Year’s Day, she shared another tourist photo: her hand being painted with a traditional Henna tattoo. (“Isn’t it lovely?” she wrote.) The day before, she perhaps hinted at spontaneous decisions to come later that week: “In India, the motto…you gotta go with the flow…”

At November’s MTV Europe Music Awards, Perry paid tribute to Brand via her on-stage underpants, emblazoned with his nickname, “Rusty.”

Of their romance, a friend tells Us that Perry has “never connected with anybody like this.” As for Brand, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star “is super into her. She says he makes her laugh like nobody else in the world,” an insider says.

If it’s true, then congratulations to them. It sounds like the kind of thing Russell would do on a whim, which is why I tend to believe it. Now, is Russell ready to hang up his orgy pants to become a one-woman man? Is Katy woman enough for such a famous “swordsman” (as the Brits say)? Meh. I think Katy genuinely has a hold on Russell and he’s trying to change for her. Will it last? Probably not. But I’ll bet they have a lot of fun until then.

Last week, Twihards were all in a tizzy, and they had issued a Twi-fatwa against Katy Perry. You see, Radar ran a couple of “exclusive” reports about how Robert “Sparkles” Pattinson and Katy Perry were getting “flirty” with each other at a mutual friend’s birthday party at the Dimples Supper Club in Burbank California. According to Radar’s reporting, “Rob and Katy only had eyes for each other. We observed them sitting face-to-face, touching foreheads and acting very flirty with each other. They were both giggling and Katy looked positively giddy!” A source said: “She brought him here before. Every time she comes he seems to follow.” There was lots of drinking (on his part) and smoking (on his part) and sketchy skintight outfits (on her part) and “Rob was getting an eyeful and he loved it!” And Katy and Sparkles left together… with other people (video here). After that, Katy and Sparkles went back to the Renaissance Hotel (once again, with other people) to party. Scandal!

So, anyway. Some people were all “What about Bella and Edward, SOB!” Perhaps Katy feared The Wrath of the Twihards, perhaps she just thought hooking up with Sparkles would ruin her rep, whatever it was, Katy is now denying the Sparkles hookup. Katy tweeted: “I don’t do vampires, I do Russell Brand.” Except, you know, she wrote it in twit-speak:

That’s the message Perry, 25, made loud and clear on Twitter Sunday in response to last week’s reports that she’s getting romantic with the New Moon superstar, 23.

“Read a bunch of yesterdays-news-BULLOCKS.” Perry Tweeted. “Ppl should know by now that I don’t do vampires, but I do, DO @rustyrockets,” she says, in a call out to current boyfriend Russell Brand. “Don’t get it TWISTED!”

Radaronline claimed that the singer and actor “got up close and personal” and “only had eyes for each other” during a Dec. 16 outing at Dimples Supper Club in Burbank, Calif.

Yet one of the club’s bouncers told UsMagazine.com of the group’s night out: “There was a big group and no one seemed to be romantic. They were just laughing and having a great time. [Pattinson] looked buzzed and happy.”

Hmm… who would you rather? Sparkles (he’s so sensitive!) or Russell Brand (he’s so smarmy!)? While I’ll admit that Russell is probably a better lover, Pattinson is way prettier, and after you got done making love, and Sparkles had a good cry afterwards (you know he does that), you could brush his hair and gossip. Sparkles for the win! In my book, anyway. Anyway, I do think Katy loves her Russell, and I think Sparkles lives his K-Stew. Katy and Sparkles are allowed to be friends, you know!

Katy Perry and Russell Brand have been dating for more than two months – and I’m counting from the time Katy sent Russell topless photos of herself. That’s a good starting point, yes? Anyway, this two-month relationship is a record for someone once named the “Bizarre Shagger of the Year” (long story). In any case, Brand had a reputation as quite a love ‘em and leave ‘em lothario, always with a pretty girl, just never the same girl. Or three girls. Or a dozen. Paparazzi caught Russell several times exiting some apartment or hotel, fresh from a threesome with a couple of girls whose names are still unknown. And yet… when he met Katy Perry, he seems to have become a one-woman man instantly. There hasn’t been any reports that Russell has been seeing any other women on the sly, or anything like that. And now Russell has given what can only be described as a sweet, puppy-love, hearts, babies, kittens, sunshine and roses-type interview to Britain’s GMTV:

The notorious British lothario, known for being non-committal, may finally be ready to settle down and have kids with pop star girlfriend Katy Perry.

“There was a deep craving within me – I mistook it for lust,” Brand, 34, told the British talk show GMTV. “I thought I was promiscuous, but it turns out I was just thorough – to get the right one. I’m ever so happy.”

And when probed about marriage and children, Brand admitted, “That would be good.”
“I do want to have children,” he said.

He’s already one step closer to the tying the knot. Last week, Brand met his girlfriend’s parents during a trip to Austria, according to People.com. But despite the conventional route their relationship is taking, there’s still a steamy side to their romance. Perry scored major points with her British beau when she wore a corset and underwear emblazed with his favorite soccer team’s logo while hosting the MTV European Music Awards in Berlin last month.

“Wow. Now MY GIRLFRIEND has worn a West Ham basque while hosting the EMAs. What a day!!” Brand twittered.

Damn, now I’m kind of hoping these crazy kids stay together. Katy seems to be working Russell both ways – she’s the kind of girl who will dress up (in public) in a corset and garter, but she’s also got that “I’m secretly a wholesome girl” vibe going on. Russell is the real surprise – I expected him to put up more of a fight. Soon he’ll become one of those guys who “checks in” and “spends Saturdays looking at duvets”. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (there isn’t). I just thought Russell was more hardcore.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry have been dating for … I don’t know, maybe three weeks, tops? Or a whole month, if you count the start of the “relationship” a drunken hookup after the VMAs. While it is surprising they’ve lasted this long, they’re now finding themselves the hot new couple. Sort of. I mean, if you think Russell is hot, I suppose, and not dirty-in-a-bad-way. Anyway, Russell and Katy are now being followed everywhere by the paparazzi, and I’m a little surprised it took this long to get a picture of some kind of extreme PDA.

Honestly, though, I don’t even know what I’m looking at. The description of these photos says “Katy Perry and Russell Brand sneak away for some intimate time at a private party in the Hollywood Hills, California.” I think that’s the house (where the party is being held?) behind them. And it looks like Russell is trying to nail Katy on the terrace railing. That would take more concentration and upper-body strength than I have, so God bless. But I’ve got to wonder if there were partygoers milling about as Russell tried to nail her to the railing. Apparently, Paul McKenna and Randy Jackson were in attendance at the party. So it sounds like an industry party… I guess Russell and Katy provided the entertainment.

In other paparazzi shots from the weekend, Katy was seen shopping with her best friend (who looks a lot like Russell). Russell was seen solo, heading into Cedar Senai medical building in West Hollywood. Interesting… put all of these little incidents together, and we have a story line. Shopping for cute outfits, terrace booty, then STD check-up?

Here’s my advice to Katy: Stop hooking up with Russell on the terrace at an industry party. Stop sending Russell pictures of your boobs. And for goodness sake, ask him what his doctor prescribed and for what ailment.

As CB reported the other day, Russell Brand and Katy Perry are the new hot couple. If you think either of them is “hot”. I don’t really care for Katy Perry, but Russell’s okay in the “I wouldn’t have sex with that walking venereal disease, but I’d flirt with him in a bar” sort of way. These are some new pictures from the Paris John Galliano show – apparently, Russell and Katy decided to take their relationship to the next level – sitting together at a fashion show. And posing for pictures during and after. Russell looks like he’s on drugs, doesn’t he? Or is that just how his eyes always look? The Daily Mail and other British sources are claiming that Russell basically followed Katy to Paris, and that he’s been “playing the doting boyfriend”. Hmm… what’s he after?

Anyway, cute couple. And they’ve made a whole… what has it been? One week? Two, maybe? They’re in love and it will be forever and ever! This must be what is going through Katy’s mind, if this tragic piece of Page Six gossip is any indication. Apparently, Katy lives for the moment. She doesn’t give a thought to what will happen when her relationship with Russell ends. And it will end. Badly. But not before Katy gets a chance to give Russell a digital record of her boobs.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry have been spotted out together several times since their hookup after the VMAs and it looks like things are moving quickly for the British comedian and the American pop star. Russell, 34, is quoted by UK tabloid The Sun as saying about Katy, 24, “I think I’m in love.” It’s hard to tell if he was serious or joking, and given the source it’s possible he was talking about something else entirely or they made it up. Maybe the notorious ladies’ man has changed his ways, though. I used to think Russell was kind of gross, but as I mentioned in an earlier post about these two, I heard a long radio interview with him and now I get his appeal. The guy is really smart and funny as anything. Plus, I like Katy and think she’s handled fame very well. I would love to see these two happy together. I like Katy Perry and think she’s cute and quirky. A lot of people say that she doesn’t have talent, and I’m not a fan of her music, but she’s popular enough and she stays relatively scandal free. The last I remember hearing of Katy Perry’s love life was that she was reunited with her longterm boyfriend, Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. (Katy and Travis broke up after a year together in December, 2008, and then got back together sometime in April.) Katy briefly hooked up with Benji Madden earlier this year, but was soon back with McCoy. She told Star Magazine in an interview published in their June 8th issue that she was back with Travis and that “I kind of like it when the guy has the upper hand, because it’s sexy, and I have so many upper hands in my life.”

It looks like Katy may have found another upper hand, and it’s one that needs a good scrubbing. The woman who once said that she found casual hookups “disgusting” was spotted making out with notorious womanizer Russell Brand. What’s more is that Katy was also supposedly seen kissing John Mayer:

The MTV Video Music Awards host was spotted making out with Perry at Lady Gaga’s after-party at Avenue — after joking onstage that he had the hots for her.

The voracious womanizer was seen admiring Perry’s cleavage before kissing her as they sat on a banquette. An onlooker at the Meatpacking District hot spot told Page Six, “They were sitting very close together, flirting and whispering to each other with their faces very close. Then Russell leaned in for a long kiss. It didn’t look like this was the first time. He was looking extremely pleased with himself.”

Brand has made no secret of his passion for Perry. Onstage, he joked about her tight pants and mentioned that the two were staying at the same hotel. Later, backstage, he said, “I think I might have a bit of a thing for Katy Perry.”

It was busy weekend for Perry: On Friday, a spy also caught the “I Kissed a Girl” singer locking lips with John Mayer at Gold Bar.

British comic Russell Brand really does live up to his reputation. He’s a smart, funny guy who loves to push the envelope but he also sleeps around like crazy. Photographers caught two women outside his house in London in April trying to sneak out in robes to try and get out of a parking ticket. He was also photographed taking a different couple of women home in January. (Those photos are below.) Maybe Katy is just having fun and making out with Russell without letting it go further. I doubt it, though, the guy oozes oily charm. I know he looks skeevy as anything, but sometimes guys like that are the best at picking up women.

If I had to choose between Brand and Mayer though I’d pick Brand. At least you know where you stand with that guy, and he doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. I heard an interview with him on Fresh Air and he was so damn smart, confident and candid without being full of himself that you can see how he scores so well.

CB already covered last night’s incident between Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the VMAs. It really was terrible, and my heart just went out to Taylor. She seems like a sweet girl, and after Kanye’s outburst, the rest of her night played out publicly – and flawlessly. She didn’t scream any abuses or anything, she didn’t pull a diva act, she just did what she came to do, namely perform and give interviews, and generally be a very classy young woman. There were some rumors that after the Kanye incident, Taylor was crying backstage – Russell Brand and others have confirmed that. Poor kid.

When Taylor spoke to Us Weekly at one of the after-parties, she still avoided calling Kanye an a–hole, which shows that she’s a lot more mature and self-contained than me. She said, “Well, I was standing on stage because I was really excited because I had just won the award. And then I was really excited because Kanye West was on stage. And then I wasn’t so excited anymore after that… I’ve been getting so many text messages and everybody’s been really nice. So I’ve had a really, really fun night. It’s been interesting definitely. It’s definitely been an interesting night.”

When pressed further, Taylor still didn’t disrespect Kanye, only saying, “I don’t know him, and I’ve never met him, so… I don’t want to start anything because I had a great night tonight.” Taylor also had nothing but love for Beyonce, saying “They told me to stand by the side of the stage, and I didn’t really know what was going to go down. But I thought it was so wonderful and gracious of her to do what she’s always done. She’s always been a great person before anything else. Before the talented artist, the superstar, she’s always been a great person and I just, I thought I couldn’t love Beyonce more tonight, than tonight.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest interviewed Russell Brand this morning on Ryan’s KIIS-FM radio show. At first, Brand talked about how Kanye was wrong to do what he did, saying “Taylor Swift’s a young kid, isn’t she? She’s a young girl. You can’t make a pretty girl cry.” Russell went on to half-heartedly defend Kanye, saying, “In the past I’ve made mistakes and done things a little bit daft… I know Kanye, and I know he’s a nice bloke. We all make mistakes in life. We’re just people; we all do things that are a bit silly sometimes. Calm down; no one died.” Yeah… no one died, but Kanye is getting the kind of backlash deserving of the incident. Most of knew he was a jerk, but last night’s incident took it to a new level.

British comic Russell Brand has just been announced as the host for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. This will be Russell’s second year in a row as host, and after last year’s controversy, I’m sure some people hoped MTV would ban him. Russell’s jokes last year infamously offended many people because he seemed to be mocking the whole purity ring and virginity stuff. Of course, he also got pretty political, calling George W. Bush a “retarded cowboy” and he made several jokes about Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston and that whole situation, which had just become public. Russell didn’t seem to care about the anger he had caused, and he seemed bewildered when he started receiving death threats. I suppose MTV figured that as long as Russell kept people talking, the show would be a success. I have to say, I’m not a huge fan of Brand’s (I find him skeezy), but his one sentence reaction to being named this year’s host made me giggle:

The Jonas Brothers had better polish up their promise rings — MTV announced this morning that controversial Brititsh comedian Russell Brand will be returning to host this year’s Video Music Awards.

“This year will be a controversy free festival of love and discrete orgasms,” said Brand, who notoriously poked fun at young stars like the Jonases and their squeaky clean reputations.

Significantly less controversial but equally newsworthy is the announcement that Taylor Swift will mark her first VMA performance by singing a previously unheard version of “You Belong With Me.”

“I’m so excited that MTV and the VMAs have invited me to perform,” said Taylor in a statement. “Because I think this year’s show will be unlike anything they’ve ever done! I love incorporating theatrics into my performances, and the VMAs have always allowed artists to run with that. MTV has been so good to me, and I could not be more excited about this year’s VMAs!”

This year, the awards are moving back to their NYC origins and the night will feature performances being broadcast from all over Manhattan, including Radio City Music Hall. Let’s just hope it’s better than the 2007 VMAs from Vegas, which had artists performing all over a Sin City resort, to pretty blah effect.

I kind of hope they just let Russell do his thing. If he offends people, so be it. It’s on MTV’s head for inviting him back. I just hope MTV doesn’t try to sanitize his act, but that would just be offensive generally, to all people. Here’s a question – do you think Lindsay Lohan will be invited? Either way, I have a feeling Brand will be making a lot of Lohan jokes.
