Isla Fisher gives birth to a baby girl (update)

islafisherhasagirl.jpg
Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen are the proud parents of a baby girl, according to reports in Fisher’s native Australia. Not much more is known other than the sex of the baby and it is unclear when the baby was born. Fisher’s rep claims to know nothing about it, so maybe she just hasn’t talked to the happy couple yet.

Australian actress Isla Fisher has reportedly given birth to a baby girl.

Sources said Fisher, who is married to English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen - the creator Borat and Ali G, has given birth. However, a spokeswoman from her agent, Shanahan Management, said they knew nothing about it, Fairfax reported.

Fisher, who is finding success in Hollywood, told The Daily Mail on Tuesday that she was happy to take a break from her career to concentrate on being a mum.

[From News.com.au]

Isla was seen out last week and looked healthy and ready to have her baby. She has no plans to work in the near future and says she is not going to worry about losing weight or missing out on work.

Congratulations to Isla and Sacha and hopefully they picked a decent name for their little one.

Update: Celebrity Baby Blog is reporting that they had a boy, not a girl, and that he was born on Wednesday morning at 11 and his name is Sadler James.

Update 2: It is a girl, not a boy, and her name is Olive.

Naomi Watts goes out with her new baby, isn’t afraid to get photographed

Photo is an older one of Naomi Watts pregnant. Please see I’m Not Obsessed and Celebrity Baby Blog for the pics of baby Alexander.

Unlike Britney Spears or Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who kept their latest respective babies under wraps for months, Naomi Watts and her beau Liev Schrieber were not afraid to let their newborn son be photographed. Two week old Alexander Pete Schreiber was seen with a smiling and happy Naomi and Liev out on a trip to the post office on Friday.

As two star parents, they can earn a million or more for exclusive photos of the tot, but they seemed happy and comfortable to give the paparazzi a glimpse ahead of any photo spread they might have planned. You have to respect that, and it’s refreshingly normal.

Commentors on I’m Not Obsessed note that Naomi looks great and that she must have been “all baby.”

On Saturday Naomi and Liev hung out with expectant couple Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fischer. Sacha and Liev worked out together and were seen hitting up a sporting goods store ahead of time. Naomi and Isla were said to be back at the house, “cooking for the boys.” [Details from Splash News. The pictures aren't that great, but here's one of Sacha and Liev at the store.]

None of the photo agencies we subscribe to have the pictures of little Alexander. You can see the photos at Celebrity Baby Blog and I’m Not Obsessed. Given how open Liev and Naomi were in showing their baby, there are sure to be more photos of the cutie sometime this week.

Here are Liev and Sacha shopping at that sporting goods store on Saturday.

Isla Fisher On Her Baby Weight

dbe-003710.jpg
Isla Fisher, fiance of Sacha Baron Cohan, is talking about losing her baby weight.

Fisher, 31, says she won’t be rushing to the gym the day after she gives birth to the baby fathered by her fiance, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.

“That’s just so not me,” she told the Sunday Express newspaper.

“Besides, I suspect I am going to be a bit too preoccupied with my personal life to think about any of that stuff.”

New Zealand Herald

I applaud this kind of common sense attitude, for all mothers not just Hollywood types. Isla also says she plans on focusing on parenthood and colouring books “for the next few years”. Still, according to IMDB.com Isla has at least one movie scheduled for next year. And I had forgotten, but she wrote two novels before going on to act in Australian soap opera Home and Away. Maybe she could write colouring books?

She still gets recognised for her role as nymphomaniac Gloria in the movie Wedding Crashers.

“Recently I was in the supermarket when this guy must have recognised me as Gloria,” she said.

“He just kind of screamed and ran away from me in the cheese section.

“It was absolutely brilliant. But I do like to think that some people might actually have liked Gloria.”

New Zealand Herald

Isla is in a new movie called Hot Rod, in which she plays a stuntman’s dream girl.

Picture note by Celebitchy: Here is Isla at the Hot Rod movie premiere on 7/26/07. According to IMDB, she has three movies coming out next year: Definitely, Maybe, the animated movie Horton Hears a Who, and Groupies. All but Groupies are finished filming, so she won’t have a lot on her plate. Thanks to PRPhotos for these pictures.

Sacha Baron Cohen kills off Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen told NPR’s Terry Gross that his days of performing as the Kazakh character Borat are over because too many people recognize him due to the success of his film. He ruled out playing Borat again, and said he may move away from pranking people in character. He’s not going to quit too soon, because he’s contractually obligated to make a movie as Austrian fashion reporter Bruno:

Cohen - who was named Best Actor in a Film Musical or Comedy at last night’s (15.01.07) Golden Globe Awards - said in an interview with a US radio station: “I think it will probably be impossible to do Borat again. There are a number of things that are in development. The next thing will probably be a scripted comedy. I think the days of me going undercover are probably over.

Cohen, who is engaged to ‘Wedding Crashers’ actress Isla Fisher, has reportedly signed a £22 million deal with Universal Pictures to star as Bruno - a flamboyant gay Austrian fashion reporter who, similarly to Borat, would go undercover to infiltrate the fashion world.

Hollywood insiders are concerned Cohen’s decision could jeopardise the deal. A source said: “They were banking on him coming up with another Borat. There’s no guarantee people will flock to see something that is scripted.”

Cohen, 35, admits he found it tough playing Borat in the movie, ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’.

He explained: “It was tiring having to stay in character, usually for about eight hours at a time, so as not to raise suspicion.

“There is a lot of physical preparation. I never washed the suit - when I come in the room there’s this terrible smell. And Borat doesn’t wear any deodorant.”

[via Digg]

That’s too bad, because Borat is pretty funny. It seems like he could continue playing him for laughs even if he can’t fool people anymore.

Also, maybe he meant that the Bruno film isn’t going to have real pranks - it’s just going to seem like it. With all the lawsuits against the Borat movie, maybe producers don’t want to take a chance.

Is Sacha Baron Cohen as messed up as Andy Kaufman was?

Page Six reports that Sacha Baron Cohen, better known as Borat, Ali G and Bruno, didn’t pose for pictures at a pre Golden Globes party. He looks a bit reluctant posing with his Globe at the Paramount after party in these pictures. They say he wants to stay out of the spotlight and it could be so that he can continue pulling the wool over people’s eyes while in character. He’s about to film a new movie as another one of his alter egos, flaming Austrian fashion commentor Bruno, and doesn’t want to be recognized.

Stardom seems to have gone to the head of Sacha Baron Cohen, who attended HBO’s pre-Golden Globes party at the Chateau Marmont, but refused to pose for photos. “He needs to stop being so recognizable,” laughed one spy.

Cohen - who seems more comfortable when he stays in character as Ali G or Borat - is said to be “shunning publicity” to prepare for his next movie, where he’ll star as his third character, the flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Bruno.

My favorite Bruno bit is when he interviews a Miami club owner and asks him how he makes sure undesirables - like people in wheelchairs - can’t get in. The guy answers all serious-like that he just puts people off to the side and makes them wait. (At least that’s how I remember it.)

I’ve read this before about Cohen, and it seems like he wants to keep his personal life private and is only comfortable being in the spotlight when he’s in character. He’s dedicated to the Jewish faith and keeps the Sabbath, which seems like a wild contrast to the misogynistic Kazakh who sang “throw the Jew down the well” to a room full of cheering yokels.

I wonder what kind of psychological issues that can create in a person. There was a story in mid November about Hugh Laurie saving Cohen from getting beaten up by an angry guy on the street who was the victim of one of Borat’s pranks. Commentors said at that time that Cohen is a lot like Andy Kaufman of Taxi fame. Poor Boopie said “This is a guy who does not like to be out of character and blurs the line between character and reality.” (Andy Kaufman was so good at character-based comedy, that some fans still doubt that Kaufman is dead, calling it an elaborate hoax. Kaufman was said to have died in 1984 of renal failure caused by a rare form of lung cancer. Kaufman was a non-smoker and told people that he waunted to fake his death.)

There seems to be a difference between playing a role for years, like on a long-running soap opera, and pretending you actually are that character when you meet other people IRL. Maybe Cohen just doesn’t want fans to know who he is so they’ll be more convinced by his obnoxious characters. It’s got to affect him, thogh, and his kind of apologetic look here suggests that the “real” Cohen isn’t that comfortable in the spotlight.

Here’s Cohen’s Golden Globe acceptance speech. He seems all serious in the beginning, and then cracks a joke about having his costar sit on his face:

Update: pictures removed due to end of subscription agreement with photo agency.

Dr. House saves Borat from a beat-down!

Sacha Baron Cohen was going out for a drink with Hugh Laurie, the actor who plays House on the popular medical drama. The two were headed out together in NY after appearing on Saturday Night Live. Cohen got into his annoying Kazakh character Borat and starting accosting a man on the street. The New Yorker wasn’t having any of that and starting punching Cohen in the face repeatedly! Dr. House came to the rescue and pushed the guy away:

BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego.

He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face.

The funnyman — known for his Borat catchphrase “Jagshemash!” — yelled for help but was slugged again and again.

He was rescued by actor pal Hugh Laurie who had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen.

Laurie rushed to help and pushed the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.

“I guess this guy thought he was being attacked by someone unstable and lashed out. Sacha is very lucky he didn’t get a much worse beating.”

The incident took place after Laurie and Cohen appeared on the US TV show Saturday Night Live. The Brit comics were on their way to a late dinner when Laurie suggested they visit a bar in Manhattan.

Laurie, 47, told friends he feared Cohen was going to get badly beaten up. Luckily, 35-year-old Cohen did not receive any lasting scars.

While “Borat: Cultural Learnings” is still tops at the box office, not everyone is happy with the film. Frat boys are suing for their appearance in the film, saying that filmmakers plied them with alcohol and that they were told the film would only be shown overseas. The small impoverished Romanian village of Glod is also considering suing producers. Locals say they were barely paid for their part in the film, and were told it was a documentary. They are also angered by their portrayal as backwards yokels, and say that animals were dragged into their homes and silly props were used that do not reflect their way of life.

Everyone loves Borat - tops with critics and at the box office

Vanity Fair might have thought that some pictures of Brad Pitt in his boxers wearing tube socks trumped Borat’s green banana hammock, but America doesn’t agree. Borat’s Cultural Learnings landed the top spot at the box office this weekend with a $26.4 million take. The movie also has an astonishing 96% critics aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s said to be hilarious, and a good time for everyone:

“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” 20th Century Fox’s big-screen incarnation of Cohen’s Kazakh journalist from “Da Ali G Show,” took in $26.4 million over opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“This picture was playing to full houses,” said Bruce Snyder, head of distribution at 20th Century Fox. “The planets aligned, the moons aligned, the stars aligned, and everything came together perfectly for us on this weekend.”

Box-office analysts had expected Disney’s “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause,” with Tim Allen returning as St. Nicholas, to win the weekend. The movie opened at No. 2 with $20 million, followed by the Paramount-DreamWorks animated comedy “Flushed Away” in third place with $19.1 million.

With great Internet buzz and a built-in following from “Da Ali G Show,” “Borat” succeeded where another cyber-sensation, “Snakes on a Plane,” failed. “Snakes on a Plane” opened last summer to modest crowds after months of Internet hoopla.

The raucous, raunchy “Borat” follows the adventures of British comedian Cohen’s TV journalist from Kazakhstan in a blend of fiction and improvised comic encounters as he travels the United States, meets and mocks Americans and reports back to his home country on his findings.

“It is what you go to the theater for,” said Hutch Parker, the studio’s head of production. “You get that infectious, outrageous, interactive experience. There are people yelling at the screen, there are cheers. It literally plays like a Rolling Stones concert.

Not all Americans are happy with Borat’s goofy antics. A southern TV producer who unwittingly interviewed Borat, making for a hilarious segment of the film, has been fired for falling prey to his scam. Sacha Baron Cohen, whose alter egos are the Kazakstani reporter Borat, the British chav Ali G, and the gay Austrian fashion show presenter Brüno, uses a front organization and a secretary to book his interviews. Once he’s in there, it’s kind of hard to kick him out.

Thanks to Digg for these stories.

Isla Fisher at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards

30 year old Isla Fisher is an Australian actress, model, and author. She is best known for her appearance in “Wedding Crashers” as Rachel McAdam’s clingy sister, Gloria Cleary. She won the 2006 MTV Movie Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance” for that role.

Fisher is engaged to the hysterical Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Ali G.

Here’s a little more about Fisher:

She played Shannon Reed, a fiery, opinionated teenager, on Australian soap Home and Away from 1994-1997. During this time, she wrote two books, Seduced by Fame, about an ambitious aspiring actress whose dreams come true when she wins a role on her favourite show, and Bewitched, about a naive ballerina who searches for her father and falls in love for the first time. Most recently, she starred in Wedding Crashers with Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams, and won praise for her comedic performance in the movie. In June 2006 she collected the Breakthrough Performance prize at the MTV Movie Awards for her role in Wedding Crashers. In 2006 she starred as Becca, a Manhattan party host in the offbeat relationship drama London alongside Jessica Biel, Chris Evans and Jason Statham.

Of Scottish parentage, Fisher now resides in England with her fiancé British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G).

Isla’s acceptance speech at the MTV movie awards must have been excellent. She is quoted as saying: “For most people, playing a bipolar nymphomaniac would have been a challenge, but I just played myself.”

“Wedding Crashers” was the big winner at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, taking home the golden popcorn for best picture and best on-screen team for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Here is Isla at the MTV Movie Awards, which airs this Thursday night. [via]
