Sarah Silverman’s humor doesn’t translate well for Brits

Comedian Sarah Silverman has attempted to export her off-kilter brand of humor to the U.K. – and so far, audiences would like to send her back to the U.S. Silverman was booed and received scathing reviews of her new act at London’s Hammersmith Apollo by fans who didn’t think her act was funny or long enough to justify the price tag of admission. Ouch!

US comedian Sarah Silverman was heckled on stage during her UK stand-up debut in London.

Fans, who had paid about £50 a ticket, slow hand clapped and shouted they wanted their money back after the star’s short 40-minute set.

After the audience refused to leave, Silverman was forced to give a Q&A session as an encore after admitting she had no other material prepared.

The comedian has her own show on US cable TV network Comedy Central.

Unimpressed fans shouted “you’re over-hyped Sarah” and “I’ve seen longer clips on YouTube”, before the star told the audience to “go home” and the left the stage.

Reviewers from comedy websites and national newspapers were also left underwhelmed by Silverman’s set at the Hammersmith Apollo, which “fizzled out” by the end.

[From Huffington Post]

I like Sarah, but I’m willing to admit that her stand-up is often hit-or-miss. So is her show. Sometimes I laugh hysterically, and sometimes I’m totally grossed out. Maybe that’s how she wants it to be. I have a couple friends who are stand-up comics, and they tell me it’s a rough line of work. If you’re having an off night, it is hard to hide – and the audience is encouraged to be less than kind. I have noticed a big change in Sarah’s material and delivery since the Jimmy Kimmel breakup – I wonder if that’s got anything to do with it? In any case, I’d rather listen/watch Sarah than Britain’s new comic “it” boy, Russell Brand, any day of the week. If that’s what the U.K. thinks is funny, no wonder Sarah tanked.

Sarah Silverman says she & Jimmy Kimmel are “very Bruce and Demi”

Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel are absolutely intent on keeping the rest of us guessing about the state of their relationship. Last week it seemed that the pair were back together after they were caught outside a restaurant holding hands. Yes it’s okay to make those second grader kissy sounds and smash your index fingers together like they’re making out right now. Because that’s about how old I feel when I make a big deal out of two people holding hands. But let’s be honest – how many of us hold hands with people we’re just friends with?

The pair attended Howard Stern’s wedding together this past weekend but are still working the “we’re just good friends” line – but People swears they’re back together.

Sarah Silverman is reluctant to state whether she and ex Jimmy Kimmel are back on. “We talk every day. It’s fine, it’s great,” she tells Tuesday’s New York Times. “I’m doing his show at the end of the month. We’re very Demi and Bruce.” Over the weekend, they attended Howard Stern’s wedding together, had brunch at NYC’s Spitzer’s Corner and hit a Saturday Night Live afterparty.

Despite the string of dates, she declined to give Barbara Walters a relationship update on Tuesday’s The View. “In total respect to you and your legendness,” Silverman said, “I do not feel beholden or compelled to define my personal relationship …”

“Oh, come off it,” Joy Behar interrupted.

Replied Silverman: “It’s not like a big drama thing, we’re just not defining it. We’re just being right now. Is that okaaaay?”

[From Us Magazine]

But People – who generally has pretty good inside sources – has it on good authority that Silverman and Kimmel are indeed back together. Of course just about anyone with eyes could have told them that.

Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman are back together. “They’re taking it slow,” says a source. “They’re on the road back to being together again.”

[At Howard Stern's wedding] Kimmel was spotted wrapping his arms around Silverman’s waist and playfully grabbing her backside in plain view of photographers.

[From People]

I don’t really understand why they won’t just say they’re back together again, since it’s not exactly like they’re going to great lengths to hide it. All I can guess is that maybe they don’t want a lot of pressure right now and want to see if things are better and more likely to work out this time. When a couple reunites it seems like the press has them “about to walk down the aisle” immediately. So that could explain some of the reluctance. Until then we’ll just over analyze their every interaction.

Are Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman back on?

Sarcasm lovers all over the internet are flooded with excitement over rumors that Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel might be back together. The pair were spotted together in Los Angeles over the weekend – holding hands. They did their best to skitter away from the paparazzi, but everyone knows once you’re spotted by TMZ, you might as well just get married.

Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel were spotted hand-in-hand in a mad dash to evade paparazzi over the weekend in Los Angeles, which begs the question: are they back together?
The pair split up in July after a 5-year courtship, but were back in the news earlier this month when Silverman scored an Emmy for her fake confessional song “I’m F—–ng Matt Damon.” Is someone itching for more material?

[From PopEater]

TMZ has video of the pair together. It appears they’re outside of a restaurant when the paparazzi attacks. They try to get into the restaurant in different directions but for some reason keep turning around. Then they cross the street (all the while followed within inches by TMZ). At no point do they stop holding hands. From their body language, it seems pretty clear they’re back together. Both were reportedly incredibly distraught by their breakup. Now they have pretty huge grins on their faces.

Their reps deny that they’re back together and say they just remain good friends. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t walk around like that with my good friends.

Sarah Silverman wins Emmy for F**king Matt Damon

In a ceremony for the Creative Arts Emmys held Saturday in Los Angeles, and hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Chalke, Sarah Silverman won two Emmys for the incredibly funny and oddly poor-timed video, “I’m F’cking Matt Damon“. Sarah bagged the Best Original Music and Lyrics and a picture-editing award.

Originally recorded for then boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show, the song became a internet hit and spurred a rebuttal video from Kimmel, claiming he was f’cking Ben Affleck. Sarah and Damon’s song was much better, but Jimmy’s video had an amazing number of cameos including Brad Pitt as a FedEx delivery guy, a We-Are-The-World-style sing along with more names than I can count, and Harrison Ford being very unHarrison Ford-like as he speeds away in a convertible.

The Damon-Kimmel “feud” goes back to September 2006, when Damon delivered a very convincing tirade on Kimmel for bumping him from the show… again. Although I’ve never seen it substantiated, I think Matt Damon showed just how good an actor he is in the closing credits of that show. Damon references the joke at the end of the Silverman song.

The song was released in February and Silverman and Kimmel ended their five year relationship in July, but Sarah, who’s not generally known for her manners or compassion, knew who to thank in her acceptance speech.

“Let’s be honest, Matt Damon had very little to do with this being popular,” Silverman, 37, said while accepting her award at the Creative Arts Emmys for the salty music video “I’m F—— Matt Damon” at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

“Thanks to the person for whom this whole video was made: Jimmy Kimmel, who broke my heart – ohh, who’ll always have a place in my heart,” Silverman continued.

In her speech Saturday, Silverman also thanked her cowriters and joked, “this makes all the, ‘Hey, I’m f—— Matt Damon, too,’ totally worth it.”

Sarah Silverman got stoned to cope with Jimmy Kimmel breakup

There’s no doubt- breaking up sucks. You cry, you eat a lot of ice cream, you talk to your friends on the phone forever, you listen to a lot of Air Supply. And if you’re Sarah Silverman, you spark up a doobie or two to numb the pain.

Comedian Sarah Silverman was feeling so low after her recent split from comic Jimmy Kimmel, she got high to get through her stage show.

Sarah and her TV host boyfriend announced their split on July 14 after six years together. And just two weeks later, on July 29, Sarah, 37, had an emotional breakdown moments before she was to take the stage at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Hollywood, Calif., say sources.

“Sarah thought telling jokes about her breakup would be a walk in the park, but she was struck with a case of the jitters so severe she didn’t know if she’d be able to go on,” revealed an insider.

“Sarah went to a comedian friend and told him she desperately needed some pot to calm her nerves.”

After taking a few hits of dope provided by the friend, Sarah managed to regain her composure and went out to perform, the source says.

“Sarah pulled it together on stage,” said the source. “Her timing was dead on and the audience responded well to the new material, which did include a few bittersweet reflections on her breakup.”

Sarah has admitted in interviews that she smokes pot in social settings and enjoys “eating pot brownies.”

[From the National Enquirer, Sept. 1, 2008]

I suppose there are worse vices Sarah could be using to cope- especially in Hollywood. I can’t really say I’m surprised that she’s a bit of a pothead. And if it makes her material more funny, who’s it hurting? What I don’t understand is, if talking about her breakup makes her so upset, why include it in her act? I think most people would understand that it’s still to soon for Sarah to find humor in the situation.

Jimmy Kimmel drunk dialing Sarah Silverman to take him back

The news came out about a month ago that funny pair Jimmy Kimmel, 40, and Sarah Silverman, 37, had called off their five year relationship. There weren’t a lot of details about what happened, just that the split was “mutual” and that they both were kind of down about it. Silverman made a half-reference to their breakup in a comedy routine earlier this month, saying “Did someone tell you I’m going through a hard time?” She didn’t say anything else about it, though.

Kimmel was rumored to be dating the new blond head writer on his show in the wake of the split, but there was only one story about it and it may not have been correct.

This week’s National Enquirer is reporting that even though Kimmel is the one they claim called it off with Silverman he’s said to be regretting his decision and has been drunk dailing and e-mailing her asking to talk:

Jimmy Kimmel [has been] desperately phoing and e-mailing his longtime lover/best pal to wimp: “Why aren’t you returning my calls?” Said a source: “It’s tragic… everyone in Jimmy’s circle said that when he finally realized how he’d let Sarah slip through his fingers – the girl he found so beautiful, sexy, funny and wonderful to his two kids – he’d go nuts!”

What torpedoed TV’s perfect couple? “Jimmy, who’s crazy competitive, got a little bigheaded about moving out of the late-night ghetto into an earlier slot if Jay Leno joins ABC – and started ignoring Sarah.” No dramatic battling, say insiders – just “couples stuff” they tried to fix in counseling.

“Like, Sarah’s a busy star in her own right, but when she’d come home to Jimmy ready for romance, he’d be hanging with frat-boy pals like Adam Sandler and Adam Carolla.”

When counseling failed, Sarah asked if they should end it – and was shocked when Jimmy just said “Okay.” Now he’s taking it hard, reportedly sauce-ing hard – and phoning his lost love. Said a source: “Jimmy keeps saying he just wants to talk. Sarah’s stopped taking his calls, saying ‘Why’s he doing this? It was his decision to end it.’ Sarah’s known for flipping the switch when she’s ready to move on.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, Mike Walker's column, August 25, 2008]

It’s too bad that it didn’t work out for these two, but once you step away you can’t just expect to be welcomed back with open arms.

Jimmy Kimmel left his wife of 14 years and the mother of his two children right around the time he hooked up Sarah. It’s possible that it wasn’t a “homewrecking” situation that so often gets brought up in these type of cases and that he was estranged form his wife for some time before they met. (That could also be the case with Balthazar Getty and Sienna Miller, but since it’s Sienna and she so often behaves like a self-entitled bitch, people aren’t really willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.)

These two seemed like a great couple and maybe they broke it off too soon and threw in the towel instead of working through the inevitable problems that come up in relationships. I can’t see them getting back together, though. Silverman seems to have moved on even though we haven’t heard much about her dating someone else. She’s probably happily single and not too worried about Jimmy.

Has an ex ever done this to you and what did you do about it? The last guy who broke up with me before I met my husband called me afterwards and wanted to get back together. I told him to stuff it, but it was gratifying to hear his sorry pleas.

Jimmy Kimmel may have a new girlfriend already

On Monday, the news of the sudden split between comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman was a big surprise to most. But new rumors are swirling that Jimmy already had a new love interest in the form of his show’s head writer, Molly McNearny. Molly started her career at the show as an assistant writer, and appeared in a couple skits with Jimmy and others. Now, the young blond has been promoted to head writer–and may be dating her boss on the sly.

Jimmy Kimmel, low-rated late nite host and our bestest bud in the whole wide world, has broken up with his longtime girlfriend, comedienne Sarah Silverman. And now we’re told by an anonymous tipster that he has already taken up with a new lady. And not just any lady. Her name is Molly McNearney (Holly Johnson’s just a character she played in a skit) and she’s been promoted all the way (with one stop in between) from assistant to head writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! by the sex problem-having former Man Show (ugh) host.

[From Gawker]

I’d like to believe this isn’t true. The fact that it’s Gawker, and they obviously have an ax to grind with Kimmel, who dissed them while guest hosting the Larry King show, make this news suspect. However, it’s no secret that Jimmy messed around on his first wife, and he does seem to be attracted to funny women he works with. He met Sarah when they worked together on “Crank Yankers.” It’s not totally out of the realm of possibilities that he would become interested in a pretty young writer on his show.

Jimmy Kimmel’s rep confirms split with Sarah Silverman

Somewhere, the former Mrs. Jimmy Kimmel is having a good laugh- and not over his hilarious “I’m F#$%ing Ben Affleck” video. Jimmy and fellow comedian girlfriend Sarah Silverman have split, according to a report that was posted at Us Weekly earlier today, which was mysteriously removed moments later.

Late night host Jimmy Kimmel and comic Sarah Silverman have called it quits after five years of dating, a rep for the couple confirms to Usmagazine.com.

The break up was mutual, a source says.

Silverman, 37, was spotted at Hugos in West Hollywood on Saturday with a male friend.

“She really looked like she was in good spirits,” an observer tells Us. “She was laughing and smiling. Very animated.”

But a few minutes later, Silverman – who ate organic quinoa topped with fresh fruit – grew somber and became enthralled in a heart-to-heart conversation with her pal.

“She was talking and it looked like he was listening and then advising her,” the onlooker tells Us. “This went on for around 20 minutes.”

Mutual friend Jonah Hill – who has appeared in comedy skits on Kimmel’s ABC show – was dining in the restaurant and also stopped by to say hello.

“Jonah’s appearance definitely had an effect on her,” a witness tells Us. “They spoke for just a minute. And after he left, Sarah looked momentarily pensive.”

Kimmel, 40, and Silverman celebrated their five-year anniversary in February by creating parodies for his show about sleeping with half of Hollywood

Silverman began the faux rivalry with her tune, “”I’m F—king Matt Damon.” Kimmel joked to Us at the time that he “hope[s] they’re happy together!”

Kimmel got his revenge with “I’m F—king Ben Affleck” — starring Brad Pitt delivering a FedEx package, Harrison Ford blowing the couple a kiss and Cameron Diaz making obscene gestures.

The pair met during a roast for Hugh Hefner, where Silverman told the audience he was fat and joked he had no charisma — but that didn’t stop them from working together.

“He hired me to do voices on [Comedy Central's] Crank Yankers and around the second season of that we started hanging out,” Silverman has said. “A while after that he kissed me.”

Kimmel separated from his wife Gina in 2002 after 14 years of marriage. Silverman has said she wouldn’t consider getting married until gay marriage is legalized.

[From Us Weekly's RSS Feed, dated 3:04 EST 7/14/08]

Sarah and Jimmy just headlined a benefit concert in Manchester, NH, Sarah’s hometown. Sarah was the star of the show, with Jimmy serving as host. The concert was to benefit the theater group founded by Sarah’s mother, who still lives in NH.

Jimmy left his wife to hook up with Sarah, but somehow Sarah managed to dodge that “homewrecker” reputation so many other women get in her position. Maybe it was because Jimmy isn’t exactly a looker, and at the time, he wasn’t as famous and successful as he is now. Five years is a long time in Hollywood, and there sure are a lot of funny memories in the wake of their breakup.

Update by Celebitchy: The story is back up on US Weekly’s website, and may just have been waiting for some editing. It’s such a big story that we were on it right away and thought there was some funny business going on with US initially pulling it.

Hollywood comediennes lampoon their favorite bad girls

In Tuesday’s new issue of Vanity Fair, famed photographer Annie Leibowitz captures a photo shoot of some of entertainment’s funny women dressed as Hollywood’s most troubled starlets. The shoot is part of a story in VF about the rise of female comedians like Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman.

The ladies channel pop tarts for the photog (it’s doubtless Amy Winehouse ever got a laugh for political parody). Sarah does her best Amy, complete with pinup-girl tattoos, The Office sweetheart Jenna Fischer goes Lindsay Lohan (center) and Wanda Sykes gets nasty as Lil Kim (right).

“There is no question that there are a million more funny women than there used to be,” writer Nora Ephron says of the featured femmes, also including E!’s Chelsea Handler (second from left) and Sandra Bernhard (left).

Alessandra Stanley’s cover story explores the recent inundation of female-driven comedy that, while capturing mass audiences (good move on f***ing Matt Damon, Sarah), relies heavily on sex appeal.

30 Rock creator Tina thinks you can thank Jennifer Aniston for that.

“In the ’90s, it seemed like every person on a sitcom — think of the cast of Friends —was just really foxy,” Tina says.

Joan Rivers echoes the sentiments.

“Nowadays, you can’t even get on open mike with less than a C cup,” the Botoxed comedy vet said.

The issue, C cups and all, hits newsstands nationwide next Tuesday.

[From Page Six]

Jenna Fischer, who plays Pam on “The Office,” says the idea of playing Lindsay Lohan in a photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz was such a source of stress and excitement, she had trouble sleeping the night before the shoot.

Turns out Jenna, 33, was more concerned with impressing the legendary photographer shooting her than with La Lohan.

“I couldn’t sleep the night before the shoot because I was so nervous to be shot by Annie Leibovitz. As a result I would sit and stare off into space when she was focusing on the other girls,” Jenna tells PageSix.com.

And about Lindsay?

“Then all of a sudden I’d hear Annie say, ‘That’s perfect, Jenna!’ and she’d be clicking away,” the actress says. “I guess for me, channeling Lindsay meant not getting enough sleep.”

[From Page Six]

I think it’s great that female comic actors are getting some much deserved attention, but it is ironic that the girls they’re lampooning in the shoot get more attention for their drug-addled, cooch-flashing antics, though. Tina Fey has more talent in her pinky finger than Blohan, Paris and Britney put together, if you ask me.
