Lady Gaga plays John Lennon’s piano, enrages Beatles fans

gagalennon
Boy, oh boy, did Sean Lennon put his foot in it. Apparently, the younger son of late Beatle John Lennon and his mom, Yoko Ono, are big Lady Gaga fans. When Gaga visited Yoko at the NYC apartment she shared with John until his murder in 1980, she was allowed to play a piano that belonged to John. Sean took a photo of Gaga posing at the piano – of course, in her trademark fishnet freak-wear – and posted it on Twitter. I don’t think Sean was prepared for the outrage that ensued.

Sean Lennon has defended Lady Gaga on his Twitter page, after irate Beatles fans lashed out after seeing that she had played John Lennon’s white Steinway piano in New York.

Lennon had posted a Twitpic of Gaga sat at the piano in her famously skimpy clothes. A caption said, “With Gaga at mom’s house, she’s belting on the white piano,” to which he received a torrent of negative messages from “uptight” fans.

Several people posted messages of “disappointment” after seeing the “unworthy” famous Lennon piano being used by the ‘Poker Face’ star, to which Lennon replied, “Pianos are meant to be played. Why is everyone so uptight? What should we do, lock it away in a dusty room? So judgemental…”

Responding to one particular Tweeter, Jennifer Flatman — Twitter handle lavielibre23 — John Lennon’s youngest son retorted, “Come on, lighten up … life’s too short, there’s enough real problems in the world,” before later adding, “Firstly, he gave that piano to my mother for her birthday, it is hers. Secondly, he was not not uptight the way you seem.”

Gaga had been visiting the Dakota Building — where Lennon’s mother Yoko Ono lives — when the photo was taken.

The piano in the photo resembles the white Steinway John played in the video for the song “Imagine,” so I guess it’s understandable that hardcore Beatles fans might be upset that a skanky attention-whore would think that she is worthy of sitting at it. But if Yoko allowed her to play it, then I don’t see what the big deal is. I would have swooned at the change to even touch it. I didn’t realize Gaga was a big Beatles fan – they may be the one band she hasn’t ripped off in her own career. But who knows, maybe her next CD will have a duet with Yoko or something equally horrific. You know what really bugs me about this whole story? How does Gaga just walk around every day, visiting people in their homes, going to baseball games, etc., in get-ups like that? I mean, I can see why she needs to dress in underpants as outerwear as part of her stage show, but when she is just out visiting people? Really? You have to wonder where her head is at. Is there any point in her day when she isn’t “On?”

Sean and Julian Lennon to perform together in UN concert

42112m

It could be a landmark moment: the two sons of late Beatle John Lennon, both of whom are musicians, are reportedly performing together next month in a United Nations concert. The performance marks the first time that Sean and Julian Lennon have collaborated. Over the years since their father’s murder, the two half-brothers have had little contact with one another. Many of John’s friends have hinted that John’s widow, Yoko Ono, was the reason the boys were kept apart. John’s mistress, May Pang, said in her book that John had renewed his relationship with older son Julian while he and Ono were separated, but when he went back to Yoko, that closeness fell apart. But it appears that two two sons are trying to bridge that gap, with or without the blessing of Yoko.

Julian Lennon and Sean Lennon, the sons of John Lennon, are finally going to perform together in public.

Sources tell me that the Lennon boys have agreed to appear at a United Nations event here in New York on February 26th called the UN-Millenium Goal Awards. Other artists tentatively scheduled to appear include Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, as well as possibly Akon and Macy Gray.

The show is the brainchild of Rhodesian Sacha Stone, founder in 1999 of the Humanitad Foundation. Stone, who lives in the UK now, is said to have relationships with all involved and convinced the Lennons to come aboard. This would mean putting aside differences between the two former Lennon households.

When John Lennon was murdered in 1980, a rift grew because Sean’s mom, Yoko Ono, wouldn’t give Julian what he and his mom, Cynthia Lennon, considered a fair share of the estate. Julian Lennon wound up engaging lawyers, and a long legal situation followed. In May 2007 Julian told Howard Stern that he still hadn’t gotten any money from Yoko Ono. Unbelievable.

Over the years, there’s been plenty of animosity, mostly fueled by Ono. At a 2001 tribute to Lennon at Radio City Music Hall, she all but wiped out any reference to the Beatle’s first family. When Cirque du Soleil’s “Love” show opened in Las Vegas a few years ago, the severe Ono kept her distance from the amiable Cynthia and Julian. Sean was a no-show.

More recently, though, the two brothers have found more common ground, with Julian surprising Sean in Prague at a 2007 gig. Ironically, the brothers could not be more alike: soft spoken, friendly, and talented. Julian, of course, had success in his 20s with hits like “Valotte” and “Too Late for Goodbyes” in 1984-85. Sean has released a couple of indie albums and one on his dad’s old label, Capitol.

I would definitely be interested in hearing what kind of music the Lennon sons would make together. From what I’ve read, all of the Beatles’ offspring have some kind of musical talent – Paul McCartney’s son is also a musician, and Ringo Star’s son is a talented drummer as well. Maybe they could all get together and form the next generation of the Beatles? Ok, maybe not. But it’s nice to see that the adult sons of John Lennon are getting together after being apart for so long.

Sean Lennon reveals how his father damaged his hearing by yelling at him

The late John Lennon’s favored son, Sean, was interviewed recently by a John Lennon biographer for yet another book on the former Beatle. Though Sean was only five years old when his father was murdered, he did supply some memories – some of them sweet, and one of them rather disturbing.

JOHN Lennon is remembered for his soft-spoken messages of peace and love – but the beloved Beatle had a hair-trigger temper so volatile, nearly anything could set him off. And one night, it exploded in an incident that ended up damaging his son’s hearing.

In a jaw-dropping postscript in Philip Norman’s new biography, “John Lennon: The Life,” out next month, Sean Lennon tells how his father flew off the handle and screamed into his ear as a young boy.

“[He was] teaching me how to cut and eat steak, which was a mystery to me at age 4; how to stick the fork in and cut behind it, and that was how you got a piece in your mouth,” writes Sean, 32, whose mom is Yoko Ono. “I think it was that night when he got very upset with me, I think because of something I did very cheekily with the steak. He did wind up yelling at me very, very loudly to the point where he damaged my ear, and I had to go to the hospital.”

He says John, mortified by his cruelty, was immediately apologetic: “I remember when I was lying on the floor and hurting, and him holding me and saying, ‘I’m so sorry.’ He did have a temper.”

Sean recalls his dad’s soft side, too. “I remember one time he accidentally let one of the heavy wooden doors at The Dakota slam on my finger,” Sean tells Norman. “And he was very upset about that. My fingernail eventually fell off.” Another time, “Alice, our black cat, had jumped out the window after a pigeon and died, and I remember that was the only time, I think, I ever saw my dad cry.”

Of Lennon’s leaving the Fab Four to form the Plastic Ono Band with Yoko, “that to me was like when Matisse turned his back on painting and decided that everything he wanted to say artistically from now on could be said by a few simple shapes cut out of paper. It was as if Elvis had left Vegas in the ’70s and started to play with the punks.”

The idea of John Lennon shouting loudly enough into his young son’s ear to warrant a hospital visit is shocking. But just because someone is a great musician doesn’t automatically mean he’s a great father. I’m sure his older son, Julian, could attest to that – John basically abandoned Julian when he married Yoko. It’s sad that this disturbing incident is one of the few memories Sean has of his father.

Sean Lennon’s short films featuring Lindsay Lohan

I’m not a fan of Sean Lennon’s kind of slow folksy music, but he’s talented and his songs sure beat Gwen Stefani’s latest atrocity. Regardless here’s a series of clips that Lennon produced for his new album featuring Lindsay Lohan, Bijou Phillips, Asia Argento, Carrie Fisher, Devon Aoki, and Jordana Brewster. The visuals and stories are quite good.

1. Headlights: 00:00
2. Friendly Fire: 3:21
3. Wait for Me: 7:05
4. On Again Off Again: 10:44

Lindsay appears at 12:15 as a character in a movie that Sean and his date are watching.

Lennon kind of disses himself while walking into a theatre at around 10:00 minutes into the video above. His date asks him “So what movie are we going to see?” and he reads off a movie critique that’s a self-conscious dig at his short films, saying “This surrealist decalogue runs the gamut from playfully absurd to playfully disturbed. Attempting to play tribute to the likes of one (unintelligible) Cocteau. This series of shorts put quite simply falls short.”
