Seth MacFarlane on feud w/ Jon Stewart: ‘my publicist forbid me to talk about it’

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane was on Piers Morgan last night. I’m not a real “Family Guy” fan, but I recognize how gloriously obnoxious and funny it can be and I love how it pushes boundaries. There was a joke on “Family Guy” back during the Writers Guild strike of 2007-2008 making fun of Jon Stewart for continuing to produce shows instead of honoring the strike. (I can’t find that footage from “Family Guy,” so if any of you have seen it, please comment with a link!) After that happened, Jon Stewart personally called Seth MacFarlane up and bitched to him about it for an hour. On the show last night, Morgan questioned MacFarlane about this phone call with Stewart, and MacFarlane was all “how did you find out about this,” but he actually talked about it in a 2008 Time interview*. (I was ready to blame wiretapping.)

During the taping for tonight’s Piers Morgan, the muckraking Brit sprang questions about a never-revealed war of war of words between guest Seth MacFarlane andThe Daily Show anchor Jon Stewart. According to Morgan’s crack investigators, Stewart called the Family Guy creator up in 2008 after MacFarlane lampooned Stewart for continuing to air The Daily Show during the 2007 Writers Guild strike. MacFarlane described Stewart as “angry” and himself both “shocked” and “frustrated” during the hour-long the telephonic ambush. He explained, “I think [Jon’s] response was ‘Who the hell made you the moral arbiter of Hollywood?’”

When Morgan noted, “There’s a certain irony in Jon Stewart ringing up and haranguing you for mocking him, isn’t there?” MacFarlane responded, “If I say yes, he’ll crucify me on his show for a year.” MacFarlane, who admitted he was outmatched by Stewart’s phenomenal debate skills, was surprised Morgan even knew about the altercation, saying, “My publicist has forbidden me to talk about this ever since it happened.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Well MacFarlane did talk about this in 2008 as we mentioned, and after he told Time I bet that was when his publicist told him to can it.

I used to not get the appeal of this guy that so many of you adore, but now that I’ve seen him interviewed I get it. He has an infectious enthusiasm, and he’s open, funny and smart. I like what how he explained his position on this to Morgan. “In that situation I think it is incumbent on people in a certain position to stand up for the people who haven’t made it yet, if that can, if it’s low risk.

“My argument is that you’re the most successful guy on that network and arguably the most successful television personality in the genre…. He was not pleased. I think his response was, ‘who the hell made you the moral arbiter of Hollywood.’”

I really like Stewart’s humor and politics, and I get the urge to continue to put out shows during a long strike, but MacFarlane made a very good argument here. He also stood up for the union during the strike. Here’s a link to a video of him speaking at a WGA event in 2007. He said “A novelist receives fair royalties for their books, a musician receives fair royalties for their songs, screenwriters deserve fair royalties for their work.”

Seth MacFarlane is so hot, women rush to the stage to grind on him

family guy party 190909

One of the funniest jokes of the Emmys came from Tina Fey, as she and Jon “Jesus That Man Can Wear a Tux” Hamm were presenting at the start of the show. Tina asked viewers “to linger in this magical time at the beginning of the evening when everyone is still a winner and Seth MacFarlane is only pretty drunk.” The cameras cut to Seth, the multiple nominee for Family Guy, who laughed and seemed very pleased with his Tina Fey shout-out. Unfortunately, Family Guy walked away with nothing, so we didn’t get to see my crush Seth on the stage.

To see Seth on stage, you would have had to be at a pre-Emmy party on Saturday night. It seems that Seth got on stage during a Maroon 5 performance at Night Vision Entertainment’s pre-Emmy bash. Seth and Adam Levine sang Frank Sinatra’s “I Get a Kick Out of You” – and Seth was so good, some drunken fan girls rushed the stage and tried to grind on him. That’s the power of his sexy voice, I’m telling you. I would have been right there too:

Seth MacFarlane is quite the ladies’ man.

The “Family Guy” creator had throngs of women throwing themselves at him after performing Frank Sinatra’s “I Get a Kick Out of You” with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine at Night Vision Entertainment’s pre-Emmy bash on Friday.

Unfortunately, for one comely – and drunken – lass, her request for a photo with the funnyman was denied. Says an eyewitness, “The girl kept slurring at Seth, begging him to take a picture with her. He just smiled, pointed at his friend’s father and said, ‘I’d rather take my picture with this guy.’ ”

Additionally, while Seth was singing along with Levine and a 44-piece orchestra at the L.A. fete, two women rushed the stage and attempted to grind with the comedian – but they were quickly escorted offstage by security.

With all the female attention, Eliza Dushku’s ex seemed to have a problem picking just one woman and was caught sneaking out of Club Avalon with five gorgeous gals.

Sigh. He went home with five women? He’s such a pimp, but I can’t hate him for it. It’s not like he ever promised to be my immortal beloved. Also, I would love to hear Seth’s version of nearly any song. He has an amazing singing voice, and rumor is that he has perfect pitch.

Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane: Stewie is totally gay

tca fox party nn 060809
I’m probably totally alone in this, but Family Guy creator/writer/producer Seth MacFarlane gets me hot. I find him to be an extremely sexy man. I love his dark hair and dark eyes combined with his pale skin (that sexy John Cusack thing), and I adore his voice and his sense of humor. In the few interviews I’ve seen of him, his natural, deep, rich speaking voice drives me crazy, in a good way. If you’re a fan of Family Guy, which I am, Seth’s natural voice is pretty much used for the dog, Brian. Seth also does the voices for Peter, Stewie and Quagmire, amongst many others.

The character of Stewie, the baby with a head shaped like a football, is one of the best comic creations ever. Stewie speaks with an English affection, and he says some of the most outrageous things on television. Seth is out promoting the new season of Family Guy and his new series The Cleveland Show, and Seth’s telling-all about Stewie. In Seth’s mind, Stewie is totally gay. Which is not shocking in the least:

Seth MacFarlane is finally spilling the secrets of “Family Guy” — including the fact that, yes, baby Stewie is gay.

“We had an episode that went all the way to the script phase in which Stewie does come out,” MacFarlane, the show’s creator, says in the September issue of Playboy magazine.

“It had to do with the harassment he took from other kids at school. He ends up going back in time to prevent a passage in Leviticus from being written: ‘Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is an abomination.’”

“But we decided it’s better to keep it vague, which makes more sense because he’s a 1-year-old. Ultimately, Stewie will be gay or a very unhappy repressed heterosexual. It also explains why he’s so hellbent on killing [his mother, Lois] and taking over the world: He has a lot of aggression, which comes from confusion and uncertainty about his orientation.”

In the issue — on stands tomorrow — MacFarlane also weighs in on why Protestant Lois seems to have a Jewish accent.

“Watch this season!” he says. “Lois finds out she is, in fact, Jewish.”

As for his advice to girls who are like Meg (the nerdy, unpopular sister), the funnyman says, “I guess maybe her parents aren’t as loving as they should be. As a result, I would say, ‘Your parents are a—holes. Get out of the house as soon as you can.”

The hit Fox show, which kicks off its eighth season on Sept. 27, has even generated a spinoff, “The Cleveland Show,” which focuses on main character Peter Griffin’s neighbor pal Cleveland Brown. Fans of the program will be happy to know that there will definitely be some crossover between the two shows.

But how did Cleveland — who some fans consider one of “Family Guy’s” least-interesting characters — score his own series?

“Cleveland is soulful and dimensional,” MacFarlane says. “Maybe he didn’t have enough to do [on “Family Guy”], and as a result, he came off dull. He makes a point of saying that in ‘The Cleveland Show’ pilot: ‘I’m sick of being just an accessory to Peter’s world. I’ve got my own s—t going on.”

[From Gatecrasher]

I wish I could hear Seth say these words. But maybe it’s better I don’t, because I wouldn’t be able to concentrate for the rest of the day. Anyway, Seth is on a career-high right now. He’s the highest-paid creator-writer working in television today, and Family Guy just got nominated for a ton of Emmys, even getting nominated in the “Best Comedy” category. Sigh. I want Seth.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane says he won’t smoke pot anymore

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is now the highest paid writer in Hollywood. He recently signed a $100 million deal for his work on the show, and apparently with increased money comes an increased sense of responsibility. MacFarlane says he’s swearing off pot because of some bad experiences he’s had recently.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has vowed to stop smoking marijuana because it makes him too paranoid.

MacFarlane signed a $100 million deal with 20th Century Fox in May, in a move which will make him the highest-paid writer-producer in television – and he’s determined to increase his productivity by swearing off illegal drugs.

He says, “I don’t smoke much pot anymore. One of the last times I was stoned, I was convinced that I would die unless I kept moving my body. So I sat there, baked, waving my arms around like a crazy person.”

[From Starpulse]

I’m guessing the voice of Stewie came to him while he was high. No way could a totally sober person think up an evil talking baby with an erudite, quasi-British accent. That’s like when my English teacher tried to convince me Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland without ever touching a drug. Nice try, but I’m not quite that dumb.

I’ve heard some stories of the bad trips that caused people to stop whatever drug(s) they were into. I’ve got to say, moving your body a lot certainly isn’t the worst of it. But more power to him.
