Shakira cut off her long hair, now has a choppy bob: mom hair or super-cute?

Shakira posted this photo on her Twitter page a few days ago – she got a haircut! A real one too, this isn’t just some wig she threw on and claimed was her new hair. Shakira has always worn her hair long, right? For as long as I can remember, she’s worn it past her shoulders, usually half-way down her back. So what does this new haircut mean? I think it makes her look older – it’s kind of a choppy mom-style haircut. I don’t hate it, and I’m glad she didn’t give herself big, thick bangs, although there is some layering in the front that could pass for bangs. I did something similar to my hair more than a decade ago – I’ve almost always worn it long, but for some reason, I was in a “short hair phase” and I did it choppy and above the shoulders. It was fun for a week, but then I missed my long hair.

I had another thought about Shakira and her dramatic hair change (that apparently took six hours in the hair salon, according to reports): that girls chop off their hair after a breakup. So I wondered if Shakira was still solid with her boy, Gerard Pique. It turns out that Shakira went straight to Gerard’s Barcelona house right after the hair cut. So… no breakup. Maybe Gerard was the one who wanted a girlfriend with shorter hair?

Also – Fox News had a really interesting story about Shakira’s accent. Ever since she got with Gerard (a Spaniard), Shakira’s Columbian accent has been fading and she’s acquired a Spanish accent. Is this the Spanish equivalent of Madonna speaking with an English accent?

Shakira splits with her boyfriend of 11 years

shakira_4_wenn5052244

Aw, this is sad news. Shakira and her boyfriend of 11 years, Antonio de la Rue, have broken up. Shakira announced the split in an open letter on her blog (read the full open letter here). Apparently, she and Antonio split over the summer as part of some kind of trial separation – or, as Shakira says, “a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship.” So fancy! Even though this is slightly surprising considering how long they’ve been together, there has been some gossip about a breakup for several months. People noticed that Shakira and Antonio were rarely together… and now we know why:

Shakira’s hips don’t lie, and neither does her heart. The Colombian singer, 33, revealed on her blog Monday that she and beau Antonio de la Rue called it quits last summer after 11 years of dating.

“Since August 2010, we made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship,” she wrote. “Throughout this time we have continued to work together hand in hand, have remained close and have kept the details absolutely private until now.”

However, Shakira, who called her romance with the investment banker “the most wonderful years of our lives” hinted that they could reconcile in the future.

“We view this period of separation as temporary and as a time of individual growth as we continue to be partners in our business and professional lives,” she wrote. “Our friendship and understanding of one another is unwavering and indestructible.”

Adds an insider, “There was no big drama, it’s just one of those things where they had been together a long time and realized they were more friends and business partners than lovers. It’s sad, but they could get back together. They just needed a break.”

[From Us Weekly]

I’ve never really paid attention to Antonio, but now that I’ve actually looked up photos of him, can I point out something? He looks like the Latin Matthew Settle. Right? Matthew Settle is hot, so I’m down with the resemblance.

Anyway, sadness for Shakira and Antonio. They’ll bounce back, though. Separately.

Shakira style-blocks Sarah Jessica Parker at the Bambi Awards: who was better?

wenn8933999

Last night, Sarah Jessica Parker was the hostess of the Bambi Awards, in Germany. The Bambis are mostly for Germans, but they usually get a couple of big international stars to show up and present or host. SJP is an international star? Kind of. Anyway, SJP showed up on the red carpet in this sparkly, shimmery Halston number. I don’t hate the dress – I’m just bored with it. SJP is now the creative director of Halston, and she’s been wearing the line on red carpet after red carpet, and either they’re just designing the same dress over and over, or SJP is just picking out similar dresses over and over. Plus, the way she’s half-heartedly whipping her skirt up is making me think of horses whipping their tail. Horses. Now that’s all I can think of. She had a costume change for her hosting duties – Elie Saab. Much better, honestly.

Host U.S. actress Sarah Jessica Parker walks on stage during the 62nd Bambi media awards ceremony in Potsdam November 11, 2010. Each year, German media company 'Hubert Burda Media', honours celebrities from the world of entertainment, literature, sports and politics with the Bambi awards. Meanwhile, Shakira… ooooohh…. I lost my train of thought.

F-cking gorgeous. Look at her figure! That’s a beautiful cut on that dress. It’s slightly game-show-hostess, but she looks SO GOOD. She won too – she got a Bambi for her charity work. Good for her.

Shakira’s hot pink bikini top & tutu: amazing or silly?

fp_5459952_trg_shakira_072210

Here are some new photos of Shakira in Ibiza. In her defense, she was posing for a magazine photo shoot, so I doubt she picked this outfit for herself, although you never know. I just have my fingers crosses that the shoot isn’t for Vogue, you know? Although Shakira looks drop-dead gorgeous, even in the stupid tulle shirt/tutu-of-destruction.

fp_5459947_trg_shakira_072210

Is it just me or has she lost some weight? She’s always had a killer, curvy-yet-toned figure, but she seems very slender in these photos. You have to be a beautiful woman with an amazing body to pull off this look, though. And Shakira kind of does pull it off, doesn’t she?

Shakira recently discussed her thoughts on marriage, and her fiancée Antonio De La Rua, who she has been with for nine years. She told British News of the World: I have no plans to get married. Ever. There’s something romantic about being someone’s girlfriend forever. I like the state that I’m in. I definitely plan to have children but I don’t see a wedding dress.” She also described her feeling for Antonio: “The minute I walked in, I saw him sitting, and I thought, ‘That man is for me, he’s the man of my life.’ I kept staring at him until I got to meet him that night. And then I just followed my intuition and everything worked out. Frankly, meeting him that night was like winning the lottery.” Aw… I also wonder about her and how she keeps her long-term relationship so undercover. Sweet girl. Kind of sucks for her fiancée, though. I bet he wants to nail this down!

Shakira asks for thousands of teachers, not soldiers
Shakira attends Oxford Union

Shakira has been all over the place these week, doing some extraordinary good deeds. Her main focus is education – but it’s not some vague interest or just some celebrity getting a quick press hit. Shakira is focused on the UN Millennium development goals, which have been a moving target for the past decade. Initially, the goals were basically some dreams for how the UN wanted to focus money in the developing world. Over the past decade, they’ve taken on more meaning, and they’ve become at once broader, and more focused. Just one example – someone like Jeffrey Saks began working with the UN development goals program to create UN Millennium Villages, and they’ve become a model of efficiency and self-sustaining localized economies.

Anyway, Shakira’s focus is with the UN Millennium education goals – namely, to ensure that every child in the world has access to primary school education by the year 2015. Shakira penned an interesting essay in The Economist about the subject:

Nine years ago, at the Millennium Summit at the United Nations headquarters in New York, heads of state from around the world agreed on the Millennium Development Goals to reduce global poverty. One of the key goals was to ensure that by 2015 every child, boys and girls alike, would be able to complete primary school. This means that all those finishing primary school in 2015 will be entering school in 2010. It’s a daunting challenge, but if the G8, the G20 and other nations join together to establish a Global Fund for Education, we can make real progress towards this deadline.

Barack Obama promised America’s support for creating this $2 billion new fund just over a year ago. A similar model already exists. The fund will be an independent and innovative institution similar to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It will include representatives of civil society and developing countries as equal partners alongside donor nations in its governance structure. It will link funding to results—ensuring accountability in the way that funds are spent.

A lot is at stake. In the past two years over 600 schools in Afghanistan have been bombed, burned or shut down by extremists. Eighty percent of these have been schools for girls. Why? Because the education of a child is the most powerful form of national security—and that’s why it is such a threat to militants everywhere.

This isn’t theoretical to me. Growing up in Colombia after decades of conflict I saw that the people who are born poor, die poor. With rare exceptions, they never have the chance to improve their lives.

These people have difficulties finding decent jobs and making a decent life—and they often end up involved in doing things they never imagined. No child dreams of becoming a militant or a drug trafficker. But in developing countries sometimes life doesn’t give you any other option.

Education is the only way to break this cycle. But in today’s world there are still 72m children who are denied the opportunity to go to school and 226m adolescents who don’t attend secondary school.

My foundation in Colombia, Pies Descalzos (“Barefoot”), has proved that the poorest children can be educated. For less than $2 a day per child, our schools provide food, education and counselling services to thousands of students. Our schools help underprivileged children grow in sustainable ways and provide them with the tools they need to break out of the cycle of poverty.

Many people don’t realise that Colombia has one of the largest internally displaced populations in the world. Over 3m people in the country (out of a population of 49m) have fled their homes because of conflict. For this reason we decided that our programmes in Colombia should specifically focus on serving displaced children.

Our work in Colombia combines high-quality academic instruction with recreation, health care and psychological support. We operate six schools in three diverse regions of Colombia: Barranquilla, Quibdó and Altos de Cazucá. Over 5,000 students are directly served in our schools—but approximately 30,000 people benefit from our programmes. For example, in working to combat malnutrition we not only provide students with nourishing meals and evaluate their nutritional status, but we also provide their parents with critical information on health and nutrition.

In addition to physical-health services, the foundation’s programmes support emotional health through counselling and exposure to the arts as well as through advice for families and parenting classes.

We also support the broader community. On any given day our school buildings are hubs of activity—providing a range of services, including adult-literacy classes, youth-leadership development, access to libraries and computer training. Perhaps most importantly, we have also begun to form parent co-operatives focused on teaching parents and on income-generating activities aimed at ensuring that families are financially secure.

We are now in the process of taking this success story to other parts of the world through our non-profit Barefoot Foundation, based in the United States.

If our foundation can bring quality education to some of the poorest children in the world there is no reason why governments can’t do the same thing. Our schools in Colombia are proving each and every day that no matter where a child is from, no matter how poor children are, they can thrive if given the chance.

I refuse to believe that it isn’t possible to educate every child. By establishing a Global Fund for Education in 2010 we will invest in these children’s future—and help to secure our own.

[From Shakira’s essay in The Economist]

In addition to the essay, Shakira gave a speech at Oxford University on Monday, and made a call to “send 30,000 educators to Afghanistan, not 30,000 soldiers.” She also set her own goal: “That in 2010, world education became more important than world domination.” Um… Shakira, we’re not interested in world domination anymore. We’re just trying to get by at this point. But bless your heart. Though her goals are lofty, her heart, mind and wallet are in the right place!

Shakira in Rolling Stone: “my body is asking to reproduce”

shakira
Is Shakira crazy in a very pleasantly eccentric way? That’s how she comes across to me sometimes, and I’ve began to have quite a bit of affection for her. I’m not the only one either – Shakira has sold 50 million records worldwide, and she’s currently releasing her third English album She-Wolf. Thus, Shakira appears on the new issue of Rolling Stone to promote her wolfiness and talk babies (pro) and marriage (against). First – the cover image. I like it generally, she looks lovely. But that cleavage is photoshopped, right? When I’ve seen her perform, she’s never quite so… boobtastic. And while they maximized her cleavage, her hips (that don’t lie) look minimized. Why would Rolling Stone do that? She’s got lovely hips! Not every woman needs to have the hips of a ten year old boy!

Unlike most women, Shakira is willing to let her body go. In fact, the 5-foot-2 Colombian “She Wolf” singer, 32, says she’s looking forward to it — if it means she’ll become a mom.

“My body feels like it is asking to reproduce, to have a huge belly and carry babies,” she tells the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands today. “My boyfriend is six feet tall, and sometimes I feel like I’m his keychain, a small thing.”

But while the Grammy winner — currently in a nine-year, monogamous relationship with investment banker Antonio de la Rua — has long had a maternal instinct, don’t expect her to walk down the aisle any time soon. It’s something she says she’ll never do.

“We live in a society that represses women’s subconscious dreams,” Shakira, who considers herself a die-hard feminist, says.

“You know, women have to make enormous efforts through life, much larger than men. We deal with so many pressure: the pressure of aesthetics, and how society wants us to deliver our performances as mothers, daughters and wives.”

“It’s funny how the papers want to see you married, and then they want to see you divorced,” she continues. “Well, I won’t do any of it.”

[From Us Weekly]

Aw, I like what she says about babies and marriage. She sounds so cool. I wish she was my little pocket keychain friend. I kind of like this trend among celebrities to eschew marriage, it’s an interesting development that seems to be picking up more steam. Shakira’s right about how the tabloid media would treat her marriage, and the marriage of anyone as famous as her. We would root for her to get married, and then enjoy all of the “Divorce!” stories immediately afterwards.

Shakira concert causes controversy in Kabul

adb-007343.jpg

Shakira is one of our favorite celebrities here at Celebitchy. She’s fun, she’s cute, and she donates a lot of her money and time to charities – not to mention the good publicity she brings to them. But Shakira caused a pretty big stir in Afghanistan recently, when one of her concerts was aired on a privately owned television station. One could see how Shakira’s hip-shaking might not go over so well in more conservative country. However it seems the real problem was her upper half that was the problem – and as a result Shakira’s top was covered with computer pixels. Sexy.

A hip-shaking performance by the pop star Shakira has provoked a showdown between the Afghan government and the country’s independent media. The culture ministry has been joined by senior Muslim clerics in warning the country’s largest private television station of serious consequences following the broadcast of a concert by the Colombian singer, famous among her young fans for her onstage gyrations.

The Shakira broadcast caused consternation even though she appeared with computer pixilation covering her chest. State television broadcast interviews with clerics and MPs criticizing the concert while one pro-government newspaper attacked the “notorious” broadcast of a “naked US pop singer and dancer” claiming it provided inspiration to suicide bombers.

“We believe Shakira’s song will be shown with Tolo TV’s exclusive logo at the training camps for suicide attackers to urge our immature young people to leave a number of our mothers bereaved,” said the Weesa newspaper. But the owner of Tolo TV, Saad Mohseni, who grew up in Australia, said: “This was not that provocative and Shakira was pixilated. The government are looking for an excuse to have a go at us.

[From the Telegraph]

Afghanistan’s media isn’t as restrictive as it used to be since the Taliban government lost control in 2001, however it is still very conservative, and could become even more so. New legislation is pending (and likely will be signed into law) that will give the government expanded rights to censor broadcasts they deem offensive to the country. I’m mildly surprised that someone would broadcast a Shakira concert there in the first place. I mean she’s cute as a button, but she’s not exactly known for covering up. And the hip shaking is impressive, but certainly not subtle. You’re not left wondering what it is she’s up to.

Picture note by Jaybird: Here’s Shakira in concert during her “Oral Fixation” tour. Hmmm. Images thanks to PR Photos.

Good Celebrity: Shakira donates $40 million to relief fund

top-sgg-003024.jpg

I’ve only been doing this “Good Celebrity” thing for a week or two now, and there were a few days I forgot about it and all, but Shakira is already being nominated for the “Good Celebrity” hall of fame. I freaking love her now. Why? Because she started charitable foundation, Latin America in Solidarity Action, that has donated $40 million to aid victims of a hurricane in Nicaragua and an earthquake in Peru. And she created the foundation with the amazing writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

“A charitable foundation set up by Colombian pop star Shakira has donated $40 million (£19.6 million) to help victims of natural disasters. The money will go towards repairing damage caused by an earthquake in Peru and a hurricane in Nicaragua.

“A further $5 million (£2.46 million) will be spent on health and education in four Latin American countries. The singer made the announcement at a New York summit on climate change organised by ex-President Bill Clinton.

“Shakira, who has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, will also host a discussion on youth activism at the Clinton Global Initiative on Saturday. Her foundation, Latin America in Solidarity Action, was set up with fellow Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, in a bid to combat the deaths of children.

“Shakira also fronts a charity to help children who are victims of violence.”

[From the BBC]

Um, what doesn’t Shakira do that’s not awesome? I can’t think of anything. I used to be kind of so-so on her music, but now I’ve decided that everything she touches turns to gold, and thus her music is perfection too. Plus she’s smart, spunky, and takes college courses in her spare time. And the other day, I was walking by this cliff, and there was a bus full of school children teetering precariously, about to fall off, and Shakira came along with her magic lasso of awesomeness, tied it around the bus, and whisked them off to safety. Then she delivered three babies and planted some trees in the just-demolished forest. This is all completely true; I saw it with my own, non-exaggerating eyes. Shakira = Wonder Woman.

Good Celebrity: Shakira takes college classes for fun

shakiratop.jpg

I have publicly admitted that I really prefer to write about celebrities being bad to being good. I try to cover all the stories equally, but the bad stories get sooooo many more comments. So, in an attempt to point out the positive, I’m going to start posting a “Good Celebrity” article a day. Unless I get yelled at a lot for doing it, in which case I’m going to slink away and go back to posting 18 Lohan articles alone. So be nice. Our first celebrity is…. hold your breath… Shakira!

Shakira has been secretly (and by secretly, I mean not bringing X 17 along) taking classes at UCLA this summer. While the rest of us have been sweltering at our offices – or if we’re lucky, sweltering at the beach – Shakira has been studying the history of Western civilization. Just because.

“Shakira has been using her free time to study at UCLA. For the past month, the Colombian pop star has been attending a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, titled “Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa 843.”

Shakira’s manager Fifi Kurzman told the Associated Press the 30-year-old singer started attending classes August 6 following the conclusion of her latest tour. Classes ended September 13, although instructor Robert Cleve said Shakira didn’t attend the last few sessions. He said he hadn’t known she was a celebrity and was astonished to find out her identity.

“‘She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment,’ Cleve said. ‘She looked just like an ordinary student. She wasn’t flamboyant…she didn’t act like a big celebrity or anything.’

“Cleve said Shakira, who sat in the third row in the lecture hall, would often discuss material with him after class. ‘I was really impressed with how intelligent she was,’ he said. Kurzman said Shakira has for years studied on her own, also taking tutorials on the history and languages of the countries she visits.”

[From Voice of America]

Um, I love Shakira now. That is so cool. I only took Western civilization because it was required and all I remember about it was that the professor looked like a pedophile. Yes you can look like a pedophile… and if I wouldn’t get sued, I’d put his picture up so you all could understand. Unfortunately I mentioned that to a few classmates who all agreed, and I found out years later that students still call him that. That’s why you shouldn’t call people names, kids. Anyhoo, let’s give Shakira some points for doing something good. In the wake of all the other pop-tarts’ drinking, boozing, sleezing, and DUI-ing, Shakira is taking college classes just for fun. While I’m sure Paris got quite an interesting education in jail, I doubt she could tell you all about Gilgamesh. She’d probably tell you that it was some new kind of undergarment.

Shakira and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd buy an island in the Bahamas

Pop star Shakira and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters have formed a join business venture and bought a 700 acre island in the Bahamas called “Bonds Cay.” It reportedly cost $16 million. Shakira and Waters plan to build a luxury resort as well as sell prime seaside property on their new island. Spanish singers Alejandro Sanz and Miguel Bose are said to be building mansions there next year.

Colombian born singer, Shakira, apparently already has a paradise of her own, after buying her own island in the Bahamas. In order to do this, she has formed an association with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, as well as noting the interest of Spanish singers, Alejandro Sanz and Miguel Bose.

The two stars have created ‘Bonds Cay’, an island of 700 acres situated north of the Bahamas and 125 miles from Florida. The island, that has five beaches and three bays as well as numerous waterfalls and rocky areas, was acquired by the association for $16 million.

Both Shakira and Waters have stated that they are intent on building a luxury hotel on the island, as well as a number of other residences with private beaches. Both Spanish singers have acquired land on the new island, and are expected to build mansions there next year.

Shakira is doing well professionally. She took home four awards at the Latin Grammys last week, including album of the year, best song, and best record. She will begin shooting a movie with Rodrigo Santoro from “Lost” next year in Romania, called “Dare to Love me.”

Shakira is also no slouch in the charity department, and has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2003. Here she is speaking at a UNICEF event in San Salvador on Sunday. [via]
