Tilda Swinton in demure Celine at the BAFTAs: lovely or not her best look?

These are photos of Tilda Swinton at the BAFTAs last night, where she was nominated for Leading Actress (We Need To Talk About Kevin) and lost to Meryl Streep. Of course, awards aren’t terribly important to Tilda except in terms of gratitude for helping “our little film” gain exposure. Here, Tilda wore a very minimalistic, off-white Celine jumpsuit-type dress and accessorized with a Pomellato cocktail ring. The overall look is somewhat bland and, as such, highly unusual for Tilda, who could’ve at least gone with a slightly bolder makeup look although her hair is appropriate.

Admittedly, I’m sort of bummed about Tilda’s low-key style on the BAFTA red carpet since we won’t be seeing her at the Oscars this year. She looks lovely here but certainly didn’t kill it like she did with that dramatic, ice-blue Haider Ackerman at the Globes. I suppose we should all just be grateful that she’s not wearing a Victoria Beckham. That would truly be cause to complain.

About a week ago, Tilda also tried to rock another white outfit while hosting a MOCA-sponsored opening of Pomellato Boutique in Beverly Hills. She wore a Lanvin Resort ivory silk matching tuxedo jacket and pants, which pretty gave the effect of fancy pajamas. This seems like a cool outfit to wear while getting bombed with Angelina Jolie while hosting a slumber party.

And just for kicks, here’s Tilda in another androgynous Haider Ackermann (who she should almost always wear) look with a smashing red tuxedo jacket and black pants. She was in NYC to appear on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on 1/26 and stopped to pose with a homeless dude, who may or may not have thought that he was meeting David Bowie.

Tilda Swinton on no Oscar nod: “I am amazed that our little film got as far as it did”

With yesterday’s Oscar nominations announcement, Kaiser noted the strange omission of Tilda Swinton’s role as beleaguered mother Eva Khatchadourian in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Truly, she deserved at least a nomination for this role, but the Academy apparently has other ideas for this year. Obviously, a lot of lobbying occurs behind the scenes, and we all know that awards don’t really mean much in the grand scheme of the moviemaking business. Still, this is particularly terrible news because now we won’t get to see Tilda rock her unconventional sense of red carpet fashion like she did at the Golden Globes. For her part though, Tilda isn’t disappointed at all about being left off the Best Actress list:

Tilda Swinton wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award for her role in We Need to Talk About Kevin, but she wasn’t sad after hearing the news.

“I wasn’t disappointed. I didn’t know for hours, but someone was telling me apparently everyone else was disappointed. I had very low expectations, so perhaps my expectations were a bit lower than everybody else,” the 51-year-old actress said Tuesday at an event celebrating Here, a short film starring supermodel Agyness Deyn that Swinton conceived for Starwood Hotels&Resorts Worldwide Inc.’s Luxury Collection brand.

“I am a good gambler, so I knew we were not really going to be in there. I am amazed that our little film got as far as it did,” she said.

Swinton took home an Oscar in 2008 for best supporting actress for Michael Clayton.

This time, she not only starred in We Need to Talk about Kevin, but also served as an executive producer. Swinton was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the film, and she said being nominated for any major award was a win for the movie.

“This is a film that was put out by a tiny distributor who doesn’t have the money to put ads on the sides of buses or television ads or have a whole page in a newspaper, so for us, nominations and prizes are a big deal because by that way, people hear about our film.”

Swinton lost to Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes, but she holds no hard feelings.

Who is going to win best actress at the Oscars? Swinton replied: “Meryl Streep is going to win it for sure.” When later asked if she always keeps a sense of humor about awards, Swinton smiled back and said, “Well, what is the alternative?”

[From Access Hollywood]

Naturally, Tilda is all class here, and I completely believe her claims of not being disappointed about the lack of Oscar nomination (whereas if George Clooney had said the same thing, I’d think he was entirely full of crap). Lots of people thought Tilda would be a lock on every Best Actress award this season, and it is surprising that she’s been overlooked in favor of Mara Rooney’s lackluster turn in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I mean, please.

Victoria Beckham wants to dress Tilda Swinton: possible or dream on?

Victoria Beckham covers the March issue of Numero Tokyo in what I feel is basically a move to show off how skinny she is since giving birth to Harper Seven last July. Yes, she looks good if you’re into the toothpick look. The excerpts for the accompanying interview thus far are scant but give a bit of insight into the mind behind the image. Victoria really is all image, isn’t she?

On Her Dream Fashion Show Front Row: “My husband. David has never been to any of my shows as I’m incredibly nervous and I need to focus and concentrate, apart from him Tilda Swinton. She’s so striking and I would love to dress her. She’s incredible looking and I love that she seems so confident in herself she doesn’t feel the need to conform.”

On Her Future In Fashion: “We are researching retail and e-commerce opportunities as the moment. I rarely get chance to go out shopping, everything I do is online and I believe that will play a part of the future. Contrary to what people say I have no interest in doing a children’s line; there are lots of people doing that very well already.”

[From Daily Mail]

I totally understand why Victoria has sort of banned David from attendance at her shows thus far. Husbands (especially gorgeous ones) can be so distracting in that way, and Victoria probably also wants to prove that she can do her own thing without him by her side at all times. As far as her desire to dress Tilda, well, I don’t see that happening — mostly because I’m not crazy about Victoria’s line, which only seems tailored to fit women with her precise measurements. Overall, I find the dresses to be unflattering to the celebrities — Kate Winslet, Jessica Simpson, Eva Longoria, and Demi Moore — who’ve worn Victoria’s designs on the red carpet.

In comparison, do I think that Tilda would leave behind her usual fashion suspects and go for Victoria’s designs? Not a chance in hell.

Tilda Swinton, Sarah Michelle Gellar & Jodie Foster: who wore blue best?

Tilda Swinton could do no wrong last night at the Globes, and she chose an ice-blue skirt suit designed by her friend Haider Ackermann, who Tilda swearscan read my mind about what I want to wear.” Indeed, this outfit looks like it was made just for the occasion. The metallic jacket flowed so well into the skirt, which was just feminine enough with a teensy bit of a train. Tilda’s poufy new-wave hair went quite well with the outfit, and her makeup was understated but still polished enough to make sure that her facial features didn’t disappear. Tilda looked almost exquisite during the closeups while Meryl Streep accepted the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Even though Tilda lost out on the actual award, she just looked so happy for her friend yet grateful to even be mentioned on camera. She is such a boss.

Sarah Michelle Gellar wore a flouncy, big-bustled Monique Lhuillier gown and received mixed reactions last night on Twitter, where some described the look as an ill-advised attempt to bring back tye dye. During the E! red carpet coverage, Sarah mentioned that her two-year-old helped her choose the dress, which explains things well enough, but I absolutely loved this dress on her regardless of the reasons for wearing it. This look is different and adventurous, and the simple high ponytail says “youthful” without translating into “desperate to look young.”

However, Sarah Michelle’s jacket that she added for the Warner Brothers party quite nearly ruined the effect.

Jodie Foster went with a far less adventurous vibe by choosing a teal Armani gown with the same old boring, side-parted bob that she’s sported for the past decade. Jodie’s makeup is appropriate and the earrings are cute, but she could’ve jazzed things up with a sparkly necklace. Of particular note during the opening moments of the show itself was how well Jodie handled (with a very enthusiastic two thumbs up) Ricky Gervais’ joke about The Beaver. Then I realized she was just defending Mel Gibson again. Ugh.

Tilda Swinton in black and white Yves Saint Laurent: perfect or too plain?

Tilda Swinton did her did her hair and makeup earlier this week for the NBR Awards, and while she looked lovely, she’d had enough of that muss and fuss, thank you very much. So Tilda (who was nominated for Best Actress in We Need To Talk About Kevin) decided to go back to her androgynous roots for the Critics Choice Awards. As such, she donned a Yves Saint Laurent three-piecer in black and white, which has the look of a tuxedo but the flow of a typical Tilda outfit. She also chose YSL platform heels to match and accessorized with a Pomellato opal ring and very little makeup. This outfit is classic Tilda, and I love it.

Jessica Chastain (nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Help) seriously overdid the carnation pink on the red carpet last night. This was a Balenciaga column dress that looked like a too-sweet version of an Angelina sack dress. Further, it’s waaay too pink, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing with redheads, but this is just too much, especially when coupled with a bit of a Croydon facelift hairstyle. The blue sapphire earrings seemed really “off” too. Obviously, the actress who favors busted gift wrap is in dire need of a new stylist.

Looking at Jessica’s outfit was fairly painful, so I’m relieved to move on to Berenice Bejo, a.k.a., “The Chick from The Artist,” who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress as well. She went for a flapper look with a short, beaded blue Elle Saab dress and a (mostly) matching Edie Parker clutch along with Jimmy Choo sandals. The v-neck works for her and the slightly messy hair compliments the polished makeup. Most of all, those earrings just slay me. Berenice was one of the best dressed last night, which made for a stunning awards show-oriented, red carpet debut in America. She might not win the acting awards this season, but she’s going great in the fashion race.

Tilda Swinton actually did her hair & makeup for the NBR Awards: lovely?

Last night, the National Board of Review Awards were held in NYC. The winners were named a month ago, so it wasn’t some huge surprise when everybody showed up. Well, there was one surprise – Tilda Swinton! Tilda took home the Best Actress Award for We Need To Talk About Kevin. And Tilda decided to get all dolled up! Look at her in this Haider Ackermann! She’s wearing makeup! She did her hair! She’s wearing beautiful colors! Huzzah, bitches. She looks amazing. And yes, she still manages to look like David Bowie.

Here’s Viola Davis in Ralph Lauren. Viola was there because the cast of The Help won the NBR Ensemble Award. I like that Viola has been wearing a lot of beautiful jewel tones and bright colors throughout this awards season. Her style is mostly great, mostly age-appropriate, and mostly classy. My only complaint is that I’m just hating her hair these days.

Emma Stone was there as well, also representing The Help. Emma’s dress is J. Mendel, and it’s very cute, although pale redheads should always be careful about wearing white. My biggest problem is that Emma seems to be wearing a TON of makeup. She’s the newest Cover Girl, isn’t she? Someone should tell her that she doesn’t have to wear THAT much though.

Felicity Jones shared the “Breakthrough Award” with Rooney Mara (who I’ll cover in another post). Felicity wore Dolce & Gabbana which…meh. I don’t get why everyone is on this girl’s grill. She’s pretty, her style isn’t half as precious as she thinks it is, and she needs a new hair person. Still, congrats to her.

Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann at the Gotham Awards: David Bowie-esque?

Last night, the Gotham Awards were held in NYC (obviously). Now, the Gothams aren’t really a harbinger for any larger awards, but they do signal what smaller films might be getting more attention throughout the awards season. Tree of Life tied for Best Picture with Beginners – that film where Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent had their affair/relationship. Beginners was also given an ensemble award, and Felicity Jones won the Breakthrough Award for Like Crazy. Career tributes were given to Charlize Theron, Gary Oldman and director David Cronenberg. For more about the awards, go here. Right now, I just want to cover the fashion. Let’s start with Tilda Swinton, shall we? Tilda wore her favorite designer, Haider Ackermann and Tilda poofed up her hair for the occasion. I kind of love the whole look – it’s feels like David Bowie, right?

Here’s Charlize Theron in Gucci. I like the outfit, but I think the headband and the bitchface are overdone. In every photo of Charlize, she looked like she was ready to shank someone.

Look at Judy Greer! I love Judy Greer, even though she’s on Two & a Half Men now. She’s a great comic actress, and I’ve never really seen her be so va-va-voom. Hate the hair color, though. She looks better with lighter hair.

Elizabeth Olsen in Valentino. I think the dress is too “old” for such a young woman.

Felicity Jones in Proenza Schouler Spring 2012. Too summery for a late November awards show, and the dress itself looks so dated and 1980s. She’s got a beautiful face, though.

Gary Oldman and his wife, just because I know you bitches love some Oldman.

Zachary Quinto, just because I know you bitches love some Quinto.

And finally, Jennifer Carpenter in God knows. I don’t like the dress on her, but I love her.

Tilda Swinton in white at the AFI Fest: angelic alien and Oscar contender?

wenn3602632

I just realized something disturbing: Tilda Swinton has the same haircut as the second boy who ever kissed me. She has a skater boy’s haircut circa 1991. Anyway, these are photos of Tilda at last night’s AFI Fest premiere of We Need To Talk About Kevin. The dress is probably Haider Ackermann, just because Tilda always wears Haider. I find the outfit to be kind of meh… but for some reason, Tilda does manage to look angelic. If Hollywood ever needs her to play an angel (again), they should definitely put her in all-white and just let her alien self glow through.

wenn3602653

I’ve been looking forward to seeing We Need To Talk About Kevin, but I doubt it will come to my little conservative megaplex. The film isn’t getting released until the beginning of December, and even then, it’s a limited, NYC and LA release. This one is probably a rental for me, which sucks because I think Tilda is probably going to get nominated for Best Actress this year.

This is just incidental by the way, but has anyone else noticed that the Oscar campaigns seem really dull and quiet this year? By November, usually there are several big contenders for the lead actor and actress Oscars, but I was just thinking the other day that I barely have an idea of who will be getting nominated for what. I’m guessing Tilda… and who else for Best Actress? Er… As for Best Actor, who do we have so far? Michael Fassbender for Shame, Brad Pitt (maybe) for Moneyball and…? I’m telling you, this is a weird year. By this time last year, I already knew that Colin Firth was a major Oscar contender for The King’s Speech.

Tilda Swinton graces Britain’s Best Dressed list, stars in a new ‘Kevin’ trailer

weneedtotalk7

There’s a gorgeous new poster for Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin, which stars our very favorite alien, Tilda Swinton. During our discussion of Tilda’s fear that she (and all mothers) would give birth to the devil, we already covered the international trailer, which many of you thought wasn’t nearly creepy enough. Well, here’s the official U.S. theatrical trailer, which I think may do the trick if you’re not already convinced:

Damn, that Ezra Miller is good stuff, and I don’t mean that in a perverted way (he’s only 19!), but rather, in regards to his talent. That kid is going to go many places, first in foremost in my nightmares.

Tilda has also just been named to the Harper’s Bazaar Britain’s Best Dressed of 2011 list. She lands in fifth place behind the Duchess of Cambridge, Florence Welch, Andrea Riseborough, and Kate Moss. Judge Philip Treacy justifies Tilda’s inclusion as follows: “Tilda has balls. Fashion is a throwaway experiment to her. She’s the ultimate in transformation.” How amusing for Tilda, who probably feels equally dispassionate about fashion as she claims to feel about acting as well. Yet she can’t fool us for long with her talk of retirement. Tilda was born for the big screen, and she won’t get away that easily.

Here are the Tilda’s red-carpet looks of 2011. Does she belong on the list? Absolutely. Would I ever be able to pull off any of these looks? Never in my wildest, alien-landscape dreams.

Leelee Sobieski vs. Tilda Swinton, both in Jil Sander: who wore it worse?

wenn3581146

These are some photos of LeeLee Sobieski at last night’s “Night of Stars” event in NYC – the same event where Jessica Biel tried to steal the show in an overblown Valli gown. LeeLee is wearing Jil Sander. I’ve also included photos of Tilda Swinton at the Toyko Spring/Summer show for Jil Sander several days ago – Tilda is also wearing the designer, obviously. Who wore it worst? Is that the wrong question to be asking? I actually admire the severity and extreme editing of the current Jil Sander line. I enjoy simplicity, and I think Jil Sander separates are probably what a lot of working women need to complete their wardrobe. That being said, if the wrong woman wears Jil Sander from head to toe, it can be a train wreck.

LeeLee’s look last night was a disaster, I think. She seems to be trying to work this look straight from the runway, and the result is much, much too severe. My first thought was “Amish”. My second thought was “she’s much too young to be wearing this.” My third thought was “I wouldn’t mind having that skirt, but I would wear it differently – lower on the hips, and with a cute sweater.” My favorite part of the outfit is the pocket detail. My least favorite part is how LeeLee styled it – too blah, too corpsey.

wenn3581174

wenn3580423

Now, onto Tilda. She’s so magnificently weird, so when she wears something so incredibly simple – this blah Jil Sander dress – she still stands out and looks so alien-like. Tilda has been a big supporter of Jil Sander for a long time – and Jil Sander did all of the clothes for Tilda in I Am Love.
