Bill Gates was on The Daily Show to promote Windows Vista, and he left really quickly before Jon Stewart was even done talking. It’s odd that he would be so busy he would leave the stage like that, but what’s even better is how they parody it the next night.
Jennifer Garner posed with everyone except her husband, Ben Affleck, at the LA premiere of her new movie, Catch and Release, last night. She was seen with co-starts wacky Juliette Lewis, Timothy Olyphant, producer JJ Abrams, and Victor Garber.
People diss Garner for supposedly not being drop dead gorgeous, and some say she has a “man face” and call her mean names, but she’s easily my favorite celebrity. She’s nice without being fake or cloying, and she seems like a genuinely kind, happy person. I also think she’s quite pretty and doesn’t look like she had a lot of work done. Her Golden Globes dress didn’t fit her thin frame perfectly, but it wasn’t fugly or anything. This dress isn’t doing her any favors, either, and in one of these pics with Victor Garber she seems to notice that it’s falling down.
I don’t know why people have a problem with her. The most scandalous thing about her is that she was divorced from her first husband, I guess, and some find that boring. Give me boring mom Garner over the teenage-acting trainwrecks any day.
Catch and Release is the story of woman rebuilding her life after her husband dies and finding herself with the help of her friends. It is out in theaters on January 26.
Here’s the trailer. It looks cheesy but I think I would like it.
American Idol is back in full force, and the best of the worst are paraded out and ridiculed for your gawking pleasure. The clueless, attention-seekers, and people who are a little bit touched wait days for the priviledge of being mocked by Simon and slurred at with pity by Paula. Randy usually waits to hear what Paula or Simon says and then repeats it, as if he’s playing the children’s game of the same name but doesn’t quite get the rules.
Judges are under fire for being exceptionally cruel to bad contestants this year. Simon called one kid who was a little slow a “bush baby,” saying “you look like one of those creatures that live in the jungle with those massive eyes.” The kid handled it really well, staying positive and telling Simon “that’s your opinion, you’re entitled to it.” The NY Times notes that the guy the fat guy, not this guy is mentally handicapped, because his old school biography lists him as participating in the Special Olympics.
Producers say people know what they’re in for because they pull this shit every season, and the viewers love it. Simon sort-of apologized in a later statement, saying “.. If he’s offended, then I apologize. I might never call anyone a bush baby again.”
Here’s another audition by a Utah computer programmer who takes himself too seriously:
My favorite comment on this video on YouTube was by akaso405, who said “How come nobody ever knows when they suck balls???”
“Ever since they started making fun of that guy… William Hung… If you keep serving people crap and telling them that it’s a meal, they’re eventually going to think that it’s a meal.”
She has a point that it’s cruel. Joy Behar said “This is like the new freak show… there’s an appetite for this.” Rosie said that if they put on good singers and showed all the contestants who almost made it that people would watch it too. Maybe they’re aren’t enough decent singers that don’t get picked in the first round, though.
While they shouldn’t make fun of the way people look, it seems well within their rights to make fun of the way they sing, since it’s a singing contest and all. There is such a thing as junk food entertainment. We proudly serve it, and think it’s a metaphor Rosie should be able to understand.
I loved Matt Damon in The Bourne movies, and both were excellent. These new stills from the upcoming third film, The Bourne Ultimatum were released on IMDB website, where the status is listed as “filming,” and it is slated for an October, 2007 release. The only thing I’ll really miss is German actress Franka Potente, who was killed off in the last Bourne film after a heartbreaking car chase over a bridge.
Here’s a kind of worthless teaser trailer, that has the release date listed as this spring, which is probably wrong. I swear I saw an actual trailer for this film, but I can’t find it anywhere. Have any of you seen the trailer?
And here’s a scene recorded on set in Tangier, it’s kind of boring, but Matt Damon’s in it, so what the hell.
Word has it that The Bourne series could go up to five films. The Bourne Ultimatum is the last Bourne novel written by now-deceased Robert Ludlum in 1990 (although I tried to read the first book and found it much different from the film), but there were two sequels written by Eric Van Lustbader called The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Trajectory. These follow-up novels were published in 2007 and 2007, probably to capitalize on the movie series. The producer says there’s enough material left for two more movies and it’s up to Damon how many films will be made.
This was on the front page of Yahoo! this morning, and they have an ABC News online video discussing it, so I didn’t think of it spontaneously, but several A-listers have commercials running in Japan. They say that despite the fact that we can easily find these commercials thanks to the Internet, it shouldn’t really hurt their branding in the US.
I don’t know how current these are, but I think the ones with Cameron and Brad are new. Let me know.
This is a cute commercial. I think it’s Dutch. Can you guys let me know and has anyone seen it on television?
There’s a rumor that Aniston wants to adopt, and that she’s looking for an American kid despite Oprah urging her to adopt an African infant. The source is Britain’s Grazia magazine which makes up a lot of shit, so I doubt it’s true. The last thing Aniston would want to do is follow in Angelina’s footsteps.
I’ve found some videos I wanted to share that aren’t about entertainment, but are still entertaining.
Invisible Octopus. Apparently this is real and octopuses have the ability to camouflage themselves almost instantly. My two year old son wanted to watch it over and over:
Breakdancing little Indian guy. This is also old, but new to me. It’s so un-pc I felt guilty even liking it. Its from a Tamil Movie in 1990 that starred Rajnikanth and features little person actor Thavakalai. The music is a remix of Madonna’s Holiday by Dutch artists MC Miker G and DJ Sven. (You may have seen it before as it’s really popular.)
Human Slingshot. Do not try this in your giant backyard. A guy commented that he did this back in 1977, “got a severe case of whiplash, and have been in almost constant pain ever since.”
A Virginia high school art teacher was fired for using his ass to paint. That’s right, he painted with his ass, and he demonstrates it here while wearing a thong. He also said he uses “other body parts.”
There’s also a video ode to the camel toe, but I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not.
House is my husband’s favorite show, perhaps with the exception of The BBC’s fine car porn series, Top Gear. He told me that I absolutely had to watch Hugh Laurie’s Golden Globes acceptance speech, and he was right: It was quite entertaining and spontaneously humorous for an acceptance speech. I was also surprised to hear Laurie’s British accent, because I stupidly assumed he was a self-righteous American guy like his character on House.
In his acceptance speech, Laurie quipped that he should have received his acceptance speech from a sponsor, and that he had to thank his crew, but that not all crews must be as admirable as his.
Hugh Laurie is clearly different from his character on House, but he’s obviously thoughtful and thinks fast on his feet, much like his character on House. I’m all confused now.
Laurie is a well known comedic actor in his native England. He has been married to his wife, Jo, a theatre administrator, since 1989. They have three children: Charlie, 17, Bill, 15, and Rebecca, 12. (His children may technically be one year younger, as it was hard to find their exact birthdates.)
Laurie wrote a well-reviewed book in the late 90s about a goofy James Bond-type character called The Gun Seller.
Five years ago he spoke candidly to the British press about his battle with depression following a brief extramarital affair. Laurie recommended therapy as a means to work through depression, and said it helped him immensely. He seems down to earth and grateful for his success.
In terms of the other nominees in the category of best actor in a TV drama, let me say that my husband and I watched all 13 episodes of Dexter on demand through Time Warner while we were in the states this holiday. We got addicted to it and could not stop until we saw every episode. I also watched four episodes of Big Love on demand last summer until it was pulled from the digital cable offerings, probably to entice people to buy the DVD. That show is also excellent, and Bill Paxton deserved the nomination. I really miss American TV. (There is a remote TV viewing option called Slingbox that we wanted to try, but it would have required a too-long wire in my parent’s house, despite being easy to install.)
Pictures of Hugh at the Golden Globes found at Gossip Rocks.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie made their second red carpet appearance together at the LA premiere of the new documentary “God Grew Tired,” a film about Somalian immigrants put out by Brad’s Plan B Productions.
Also at the premiere were Nicole Kidman, who narrates the film, Catherine Keener, who co-produces, and Ed Norton.
God Grew Tired of Us tells the story of four young men who leave war-torn Somalia to start a new life in America. They hiked barefoot across the desert for five years against incredible odds and finally made it to a UN refugee camp in Kenya, where they were chosen to emigrate to the U.S. The documentary tells the poignant sometimes funny story of how they adjusted to their new life. Nicole Kidman narrates.
It is winning rave reviews and received the Grand Jury prize and Audience Review prize at this year’s Sundance Festival. I know I would love to see it. It is in limited release from what I could tell.
Also, I wanted to point out that Angelina has a tell-tale bulging vein on her forehead, which I once read in a women’s magazine is the way you can tell that someone used Botox. I got too caught up in doing the research for the film to really focus on dissecting her every recent interview comment like I normally do.
There’s also a pretty funny picture I found at Hello! of Angelina talking to a stern-looking Kidman.
The rest of the pictures are high quality, found at SimplyBrad.
I watched this whole worthless video of Mariah Carey talking to these two teenaged high school students in Aspen. She talks about her rebellious younger brother and it seems like the whole rambling point of the conversation is to figure out where to get her brother some clothes as a gift. She tells them she stopped school in the eigth grade, but she was like, advanced, to get into eigth grade as a 12 year old. She also says she’ll record songs with their names in them, especially since one of the teens has the same name as her hairdresser.
They tell her where to go in town and she relates to them very well, which is quite a testament to her maturity. One guy name drops his girlfriend, probably to keep drunk Mariah in check.
In the middle of the video the guys are talking about themselves and Mariah abruptly changes the subject, asking a woman who’s either her friend or the help “How many websites does my dog have? My dog?”
“23 maybe,” the woman answers. She then talks about her dog losing an online poll to Miss Piggy or some shit.
One of the guys says he could win at those million dollar trivia gameshows because he knows all the answers, and Mariah is like “I don’t” and the guy says “you’re already rich,” but she says something about not being that rich. At the end she tries to convince one of the guys to give her his gloves.
Mariah is off the charts on that narcissism scale, and now I know she has yet to complete junior high.
Don’t waste your time. Mariah is tipsy talking to teens, that’s the basic idea.
