Artist creates amazing pieces using fish heads

I’m a big fan of fish. They taste good on my plate, they’re pretty and relaxing in bowls, and they make fantastic Pixar movies. What’s not to love? What I didn’t know about our scaly sea friends is that they’re also really, really good subjects for avant-garde artists.

French artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard, 37, makes amazing works of art using fish heads. Which sounds crazy. And sort of is crazy. But in a really cool way.

Exclusive…Avant-garde French artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard creates her incredible art installations using fish heads bought from her local fishmonger. Taking her inspiration from the silent films of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin that she watched as a child, Anne-Catherine’s depictions of fish as prisoners, chat show participants and condom factory workers can take up to three months to prepare and build.

Everything from the costumes the fish heads are attached to and the props involved in the shoot are created by Anne-Catherine. She does not use photo-shop at any point to enhance her detailed work. Reflecting her political and ethical beliefs, Anne-Catherine believes that fish can best reflect her rage at societies hypocrisy.

The Telegraph notes that Becker-Echivard attaches the heads to “doll-like bodies,” and her mother makes the costumes. That’s one supportive parent. I think most moms – no matter how old their kids are – wouldn’t be as enthusiastic about fish art as Becker-Echivard’s mom is. She gets the fish from the Rungis market, which is the largest in the world. While it’s super unusual, Becker-Echivard’s artwork is absolutely amazing. Thanks to Fame for the pictures.

Note by Celebitchy: Here’s a link to a video on Becker-Echivard’s website that shows her making the pieces.

  1. “Fish heads, fish heads, roly-poly fish heads; fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum.” That was actually one of Bill Pullman’s first acting jobs, that video.

    Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Aaah but the artist has thought of that - the banners in the protest photo say “Let Us Live” and NO! with a drawing of an eaten fish flanked by a knife and fork.

  7. They still make me feel mildly nauseous, her studio must smell like the underside of a bridge during salmon dying season, but they’re adorable and kinda pretty.
