Over the past week, People Magazine has slowly been rolling out bits and pieces from their interview with Oksana Grigorieva, done before her lawyers told her to stop speaking to the press. I realize that the full interview probably came out in last week’s print edition of People, but I didn’t get it, and I’m stuck with whatever People puts online. In addition to print excerpts, People has also released a series of video snippets from the interview, which are… difficult. CB and I got into a fight (sort of, not really, we just disagreed strongly) the other day about one of the videos of Oksana. CB’s opinion of Oksana changed drastically after viewing it – CB thought Oksana was coming across as very false and theatrical. I viewed the same video and I found it unnerving, but I also think the weirdness of Oksana talking directly into the camera is adding to the weirdness and discomfort. Eyes for Lies tended to agree with CB – that some of Oksana’s claims were exaggerations or half-truths. My take is still that Oksana is the victim in this situation, and that battered women often make strange and f-cked up decisions, and those discrepancies don’t add up to absolution for the batterer. As the drama surrounding Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva continued, the Russian-born musician is going into greater detail about the domestic violence she says she suffered at Gibson’s hands. Grigorieva, 40, alleges that a livid Gibson, 54, flew off the handle at her on Jan. 6 in the presence of their 1-year-old daughter Lucia and her 13-year-old son Sasha (from a previous relationship with actor Timothy Dalton).
Gibson’s attorneys declined to comment for this story, but they have repeatedly disputed her allegations. The L.A. District Attorney is determining whether to charge Gibson with for domestic violence, while an L.A. sheriff’s investigation is underway as to whether Grigorieva tried to extort millions from the actor in exchange for keeping explosive audiotapes between the two private. But in an interview with PEOPLE, Grigorieva – who was romantically involved with Gibson for two years – says the star became enraged on Jan. 6 for no specific reason and repeatedly struck her while she held Lucia and Sasha cowered under the bed.
“When the domestic violence event happened … we were completely terrified and devastated,” Grigorieva tells PEOPLE. “Mel kept spitting on my face until it was covered in saliva …he kept screaming like a crazy man. It’s a scary sight.”
“He says get the eff out and then he pulls a gun out,” she says. “He could have killed us all.”
They were the tapes heard ’round the world. But Oksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend, vehemently denies that she is the one who made them public.
“Have you heard those tapes? Have you listened to them? What he says, is that not violence? It’s an emotional rape. I’ve never leaked those tapes,” she says of the audio that surfaced in July in which the actor can be heard raging against Grigorieva in a series of explosive phone calls. She says she does not know how the tapes surfaced.
Grigorieva, 40, also denies that she ever attempted to extort any money from Gibson, 54.
An L.A. Sheriff’s investigation is underway as to whether Grigorieva attempted to extort millions from Gibson in exchange for keeping the tapes private. Meanwhile, the L.A. district attorney is determining whether to charge Gibson with domestic violence. Gibson’s attorneys declined to comment about Grigorieva’s interview in the new issue of PEOPLE, but his side has repeatedly disputed her allegations.
Grigorieva maintains that her primary focus is the couple’s 1-year-old daughter Lucia, who lives with her mom but sees her dad nearly every other day, including overnight visits once a week. “I’m only fighting for my daughter,” says Grigorieva. “He needs to understand that … and stop destroying me and my name.”
Why is she speaking out so publicly? “I’d like for people to know the real Mel Gibson,” she says. “Even though he’s rich and famous, he’s a bully … And I want other women that are in my situation to stand up to the bullies, even though it’s difficult and scary.”

Were Mel Gibson’s words “emotional rape”? Well… in my opinion, yes. I certainly felt like I needed to take a shower (in a bad way) after I heard the collection. Now, do I think Oksana is telling the truth about how Radar got the tapes? No. Even if Oksana didn’t physically hand them over to someone at Radar, I think she was behind the release of the tapes. And I really don’t blame her for that at all – I think it’s good that people see what an abusive prick Mel is. But I wish Oksana would just stop denying that she had anything to do with the release.
Not to defend Mel but something is very off about this woman and her “stories”. Is the Russian mob behind this?

I don’t see anything wrong with the videos except you can tell where they edited it. Videos where someone is just talking into the camera are always odd.
It is hard to talk about things like that and I’m sure she thinking about all the ways Mel’s people will tear apart everything she says and does.
I can’t believe the LA Sheriff’s dept seems to be putting more focus on the “extortation” (sp?) claims than the DV claims.

I can’t believe she still wanted to be with Mel after she claimed such abuse. Simply don’t believe this woman. It’s all about money and I’m certain she wasn’t the ideal GF either. She could have gone off in a huff slinging a cabnet or door open and it coming back to hit her. I’ve actually done that before after getting into a verbal altercation with my husband. Feeling very stupid but it does happen. Mel is verbally abusive but that doesn’t mean he’s hit her. I’d still like to hear what she said prior to those phone calls, you can tell she only picks and chooses what is released.

Whether releasing them was right is a matter of opinion. I say it is not ok. Taking them to the police is ok, but taking them to Radar, whether for money or just revenge, was wrong. She could have made her point with one tape, but she chose to release all of them over a period of WEEKS. That is not just letting people know what happened. She is working overtime to destroy him, and yes, hell hath no fury blah, blah, but they have a daughter together and she is going to screw that kid up and fill her with hate. So sad.

I don’t think the Sheriff’s dept. is “focusing” more on the extortion charges than the DV charges this is what Mel’s lawyers requested that a decision on charges being filed would be done “together”, so charges for DV won’t be done until decision on the extortion is done.
I think Oksana’s interview was good like she says she wants people to know the real Mel that he is a bully. She is not in the wrong for speaking like she is doing and the tapes being released were the right thing to do WHOEVER released it because Mel is rich, powerful, movie star and “just going to the police” would not have done anything this had to have gone public like it did. I don’t have a problem with Oksana denying she released the tapes. I strongly believe Oksana is more out for the protection of her child than for money, she is entitled to child support that is money. Mel, however, is about money and control NOT about the well being of the child. He is and will be a danger to that child because he will be taking his anger and hate toward Oks on that child and will abuse that child emotionally/verbally to come against Oksana because she brought that child into the world to come against Mel!
I can’t believe that the JUDGE has not demanded a psychiatric evaluation on Mel. With a child involved that should have been requested. Surely her attorneys are requesting this.
Mel Gibson is giving his greatest performance playing the role of a “loving, caring father” and DCFS makes a couple of visits for what, a couple of hours, and this is what they “SEE” and they are so fooled. I hope Oksana gets full custody of this child and I hope that the Sheriff’s files extortion charges against Mel because I believe HE is the extortioner not Oks. Oksana doesn’t have the “power” to put “force” on someone to demand money – Mel has the power to force his demands on someone and according to what I have heard that would determine “extortion” it would fall on Mel not Oksana.
I don’t want Mel to get away with it and I want Mel to lose custody over this child! For the child’s sake let her be with her mother! Oksana IS a victim of abuse and Mel DID hit her/abused her. Both of them suffered the consequences of their own actions.
@Whatever Nicole Simpson went to the police she had an order of protection she is now dead. Oksana could have reported everything and had an order of protection but still ended up dead or attacked. BTW she has yet to make the kind of money she could have off of this. I truly believe her motivation was cold served revenge. AND I applaud her.

I really don’t understand why people are hating on this woman so much. like so many other women in a domestic abuse situation, she probably had her reasons to stay. say what you will but I think it’s great she recorded whatever she has because nobody would believe her otherwise.
@CB…Yes! Thank goodness you’ve finally realized that “…some of Oksana’s claims were exaggerations or half-truths.” That’s why so many of us haven’t been buying her DV story and are fed up with her incessant self promotion and media smear campaign against Mel and his family.
Oksana’s life story is one exaggeration and/or fabrication after another. Yes, Mel raged at her over the phone, and they probably did have a couple of major fights, especially after he figured out what she was all about. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that there was physical violence a la OJ/Nicole just because she says so.
“Whatever” hit the nail on the head with the comment that Oksana could’ve gotten her point across with one or two tapes. Many people were sympathetic at first but now question her motives because of the overkill…not just numerous tapes, but also leaked e-mails and hand written letters from Mel. Unless someone broke into her house (or more accurately, Mel’s house that she lives in) she obviously gave them to someone. Once Mel’s rantings became public and legal authorities began the investigation Oksana should’ve done what Mel’s been doing since day one: keep quiet and let the matter be handled by law enforcement and the courts.

No doubt what Mel did was wrong and beyond disgusting, and shows a side of him that makes me no longer watch any movie he is ever in.
It is however hard to perceive her as a victim. I feel when many women, and men, are first victims of abuse, they are scared and their first thoughts are of fear and not knowing what to do. I see her first thought being money, and how to record this abuse.
Hey, if he hadn’t said anything so disgusting this wouldn’t be happening. But I can’t honestly perceive her as a victim. Though I’ve never been in her shoes, so I don’t have the best view of the situation.
Everytime I see a photo of her, all I can think of is all the obvious plastic surgery she has had. She is such a golddigger. Its so obvious that getting knocked up by Mel was the best thing ever to happen to her. I hope they both get exactly what they deserve.

Here’s my perception on this issue:
Do I believe that Mel can be violent and verbally abusive. The tapes prove he is. However, I also feel that he’s the type that would give the shirt off his back.
Do I believe that she was utterly terrified or held captive in the relationship. Absolutely not.
Do I believe she turned a blind eye in hopes that he would marry her and set her up for life. You bet.
Do I feel that she’s getting revenge because he would not marry her. Yes, I do.
Timothy Dalton, the father of her son, has remained quiet and I wonder what transpired in their relationship. I have a feeling he will be called to testify by Mel’s team.
She’s not fooling me and I truly feel she’s attempting to gain sympathy from the public and the judge by playing the victim role because she UNDERSTANDS that society abhors an abuser.
What I do feel is she’s a person who has exaggerated about her situation and released explosive tapes to gain sympathy. She will be found out in court. I do strongly believe that this will happen.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to handle domestic violence. The right way is to go to the police. The wrong way is to go to the press and use DV allegations as a career launching point.

Battered women tend to do the exact opposite when they describe their abuse. Fact: Survivors rarely describe themselves as victims of domestic abuse or violence, and tend to underestimate rather than to exaggerate violence, even when violent episodes escalate in intensity and frequency. Survivors are much more likely to omit, deny, minimise, and even excuse domestic abuse rather than disclose or exaggerate it.
What Oksana did to Mel Gibson can also be described as emotional rape. Using someone and pretending to love them for their money is considered as emotional rape. If she had truly loved the guy, she wouldn’t be hellbent on trying to make him pay for whatever she thinks she’s owed. Women in her position are not legally entitled to anything else other than child support. She was never his wife and, unlike Robyn, was not instrumental in his success and his wealth. Oksana is not a battered woman. Battered women hide from their abusers because they are in danger of being stalked and killed by them if provoked or when they try to leave . That’s why women who have been abused by their partners do not speak out publicly till they know that their abusers are locked up or they’re under police protection and safe from harm. Oksana is the only battered woman i know who stays at her abuser’s house, relies on him to pay for everything, including her own debts, and continues to badmouth him to the press.
@lamp, she’s already released the tapes but what has that accomplished? the tapes themselves may be despicable to hear, but they do not tell the whole story. even if we are to accept the tapes as facts, we would still have to assume that oksana is lying because she never once mentioned on the tape that mel had tried to strangle her or threatened to kill her and the baby with his gun.
also, if you record someone because you want people to believe that you are being abused, why would you try to negotiate a settlement in exchange for the tapes instead of handing them over to the police?
One final comment on this fiasco.
My feelings is that Mel’s legal team will perform an impeccable job in uncovering the lies and inconsistencies. They will succeed in having the DA case dropped against Mel.
Once the serious charges are dropped and Mel has sorted out the maintenance allownance and visitation rights for his daughter, I sense that his legal team will file a lawsuit against Oskana for releasing those tapes.
Personally, she should have taken the settlement, shut her mouth and moved on. There was no need to play this out in the public forum.
I am horrified to read all these pro Mel comments. I take it you are all very young or very naive. Why is it that our society will accept horrible behavior from celebrities that they would never tolerate from non celebs?

Mel Gibson is an inhuman, vicious, selfish *ss hole. As I have mentioned before, I have heard hundreds of stories from people who have worked on his projects of his vile behavior and complete disregard for other people. Temper tantrums, making incessant unwanted advances on women who got really tired of telling him “no!”. Manipulating, firing, treating people like utter dirt (including one woman who had just lost a child). Do you see Hollywood coming out in force to defend him like they did Roman Polanski? No, becuz, everyone thinks the sob is finally getting what he deserved.
Furthermore, I have heard many, many people say that if they were holding onto these tapes, they would have released them in a heartbeat. Think about it, whoever had them is a relative or friend of Oksana, obviously, maybe even her mom. Gibson is given the red carpet treatment by the Sheriffs-to-the-stars, just as he always has; Nicole Simpson called the police several times about OJ, but there was no real deterrent to him to killing her. I would definitely conclude that if Oksana had been my sister, or friend or daughter, that releasing the tapes might well be the one thing that would stop him in his tracks. Also, this has forced him to finally seek help, so I’ve heard.
Women are killed every damn day by their husbands or boyfriends or exes. Women that have called law enforcement, gotten restraining orders, even moved away. I can’t think of a better deterrent than making the abusers actions completely public.
None of you KNOW that this is about money or revenge. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lot more that we don’t know. But it won’t surprise me one little bit if the Lost Hills Sheriffs station does whatever it they have to do to protect Mel. They’ve looked after the interests of many celebs over the the years. There is no justice here.

I’ve never met Mel or Oksana, and I don’t know anyone who has, but I did work in the music/entertainment/publishing industries in NYC in the late 70’s/early 80’s, so I know how the PR game is played (obviously I’m neither “very young” nor “very naive!”) I’m a strong, independent woman who can spot b.s. a mile away, and I had Oksana pegged from the moment I read/heard about her. I have very little patience for “professional victims” like Oksana that never take responsibility for their actions. If Mel is “an inhuman, vicious, selfish **s hole,” why did she get involved with him in the first place? If what you say is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) his reputation was well known, especially to “Hollywood insiders” like her. And he was (and still is, legally) married! Where I come from, it doesn’t matter if you’re separated or you have no “spiritual connection” with your wife (as Mel said on one of the tapes), married is married. What did she expect? That he would be “Mr. Perfect” with her? She’s old enough and experienced enough to know better. Yes, she may have not have realized the intensity of his anger management issues, but I don’t believe for one minute there were no warning signs before the January blow up. And I have a huge problem with the fact that the you-know-what hit the fan not long after the April breakup. Oksana was able to tolerate the “emotional rape” and verbal abuse as long as Mel was taking care of her, paying for her imaginary “music career” and letting her share his celebrity lifestyle.
Right now my disgust is not so much about Mel and Oksana, it’s about the psychological damage she’s inflicting on her two children (Mel’s youngest son not so much, because he has a strong support system from his mother and older siblings). As I’ve said before, Oksana needs to STFU and let the law enforcement people do their jobs.
@ Uzi, I wouldn’t be surprised if his money and power were a major attraction to her, and I certainly think she has bad taste. A lot of people I know that feel sorry for her now, thought of her as a golddigger in the beginning. But I do think he put her through hell after hearing those insane rages on the tapes. Uzi, agree with you that her kids should be her first concern. But shutting up and letting law enforcement do their jobs? They are very biased towards celebrities here. I keep saying that, but you guys can’t comprehend it. Here’s a quickie about the same Sheriff Dept: a few years ago when a young guy went missing on the way to his girlfriends house one night, the parents begged this same Sheriff dept to help them search the canyon (Malibu, Mulholland, etc) roads and release the Search and Rescue unit, who wanted to search for him, but couldn’t unless the Sheriff Dept “released” them. Well, not only did this Sheriff Dept refuse, flat out, to do anything, but they insulted the boy to the parents and told them he was probably drunk in Vegas or Tijuana! The heartbroken parents hired their own helicopters and had their own search parties scour the Santa Monica mtn areas. The Sheriffs did nothing but hand out tickets to the Search Party for parking on the side of the road! After 3 days, the Mom and little brother found him dead in his car off Mulholland. He had bled to death. Another story: they arrested a woman in Malibu who had done a “dine n ditch”, then released her in the middle of the night with no cash, no way home. She ended up being murdered. Meanwhile though, they have no problem sending unlimited cars out to protect celebs (Britney, Clooney, you name it) from paps, and sent several cars and officers to escort Paris Hiltons parents through the jail parking lot when she was in there. I could go on all night.
jane16, i don’t know why you had to mention roman polanski for, but i think it’s utter hypocrisy for the hollywood crowd to support a man who pleaded guilty and was convicted of raping a 13 year old girl, but condemns a guy because he has bigoted views and a nasty temper. have there been any rumours that he was physically abusive to his wife or any of his ex mistresses besides oksana? and he has not been proven to have physically abused oksana, the pictures do not show a woman who was beaten, punched, or strangled. the only things we saw on those photos was a chipped tooth, a missing veneer and a vein near the eye area. how can a woman who was beaten and strangled not have any bruises or cuts on her face, chin or neck?
People in actual fear for their lives would have instantly released them in a heart beat instead of shopping around for lawyers to see if she can get a cash settlement for them. And as for Nicole Simpson, how do you know for sure she would have been safe if she had taped oj and tried to extort him for his money? how do you know that public exposure would have deterred oj from trying to kill her? did it stop him from robbing a guy and holding him up at gun point? did it stop him from beating up his ex gf christie prody? isn’t it interesting that even christie never spoke up about her life with oj and the abuse that she suffered from him till after he was sent to jail? in contrast, oksana is still living at her abuser’s house and doesn’t seem to have any problem or fear of badmouthing mel even though she knows that the guy hasn’t been charged yet. So are you saying that the emails and texts from oksana that were leaked to TMZ and radar online are fake? and if this isn’t about revenge, why did she mention in the tape that he was going to pay, why did she accuse him of trying to destroy her and her name? has he even said a word to the public at all? and the only one who’s destroying her credibility is herself. maybe if she hadn’t told lies to begin with and instead focused on getting justice in court rather than the court of public opinion, she would have more credibility to people.
i guess it must have been hell for oksana when she signed the cohabitation form, coz that’s when she claims that mel became abusive towards her. and i guess living in a rent free house, with a free car, 20k for child support and 5 million dollars spent for a music career is something that we should all pity oksana for. ask yourself this, what exactly is her agenda when she keep talking about this? if she wants justice, why doesn’t she wait for the DA to make a move and let it play out in court rather than in the media. if she wants mel to pay more child support, 20k is sufficient enough for a baby who hasn’t even turned one yet. if she wants mel to get help, he already is, he’s already in therapy. if she doesn’t wanr shared custody, then why did she sign her name on the joint custody form and initialed her name on every page? why did she sign the agreement and added in the steinway piano to be given to her? what other reason does she have to keep talking about this? if she didn’t leak the tapes then why should she even bother mentioning it for? at least tiger’s mistress rachel knows when to keep her mouth shut and hasn’t spoken publicly about her affair to tiger. if she wants to ruin mel’s reputation, the tapes pretty much guaranteed that. i also don’t get why she continues to demonise him yet she keeps relying on him to pay for everything. once his wealth diminishes, it will also affect her child support and lucia’s inheritance. i do not feel sorry for women who use domestic violence as an excuse to extort money, i do not feel sorry for women who lies and tries to manipulate the truth to their own benefit. i do not feel sorry for women who trivializes actual victims of domestic violence who do not have the same benefits and options that oksana has.

She seems way too calculating. If she thinks that is ‘verbal rape’ she has led a sheltered life, which all stories about her past don’t paint her as innocent.
