George W. Bush says Kanye West was “the all-time low” of his presidency

Do I have real, actual gossip to cover? Sure. Is it difficult to concentrate this morning because I’m still checking on individual congressional races? Sure. But this site is about celebrities, and so I won’t be discussing Rand Paul or Harry Reid or John Boehner. Instead, we’re going to talk about Kanye West. Is it weird and funny that this Kanye West gossip comes from George W. Bush, former two-term Republican president? Yep.

Okay, so… does everyone remember Hurricane Katrina? Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and thousands of Gulf residents were left homeless, and the local, state and federal governments all dropped the ball and failed to properly give basic support to many areas, notably the city of New Orleans? Shortly after Katrina, Hollywood organized a telethon to raise money for charities supporting Gulf residents. At one moment during the telethon, Mike Meyers and Kanye West stood together to offer yet another short speech, likely about some specific Gulf residents who struggled in the storm. Instead of following the script, Kanye went off in an emotional speech and blurted out “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Here’s the video:

F-ck, I forgot how funny the reaction shots were. The look on Mike Meyers’ face is priceless, and the cut to Chris Tucker is GENIUS.

Anyway, George W. Bush has written a memoir, as nearly every former president does. In the book, he describes this moment, this KANYE MOMENT as “one of the most disgusting moments in my Presidency” and “an all time low.” Pres. Bush and Matt Lauer discussed the incident in a new interview, and Gawker has the transcript:

MATT LAUER:
About a week after the storm hit NBC aired a telethon asking for help for the victims of Katrina. We had celebrities coming in to ask for money. And I remember it vividly because I hosted it. And at one part of the evening I introduced Kanye West. Were you watching?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
Nope.
MATT LAUER:
You remember what he said?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
Yes, I do. He called me a racist.
MATT LAUER:
Well, what he said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
That’s – “he’s a racist.” And I didn’t appreciate it then. I don’t appreciate it now. It’s one thing to say, “I don’t appreciate the way he’s handled his business.” It’s another thing to say, “This man’s a racist.” I resent it, it’s not true, and it was one of the most disgusting moments in my Presidency.
MATT LAUER:
This from the book. “Five years later I can barely write those words without feeling disgust.” You go on. “I faced a lot of criticism as President. I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich. But the suggestion that I was racist because of the response to Katrina represented an all time low.”
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
Yeah. I still feel that way as you read those words. I felt ‘em when I heard ‘em, felt ‘em when I wrote ‘em and I felt ‘em when I’m listening to ‘em.
MATT LAUER:
You say you told Laura at the time it was the worst moment of your Presidency?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
Yes. My record was strong I felt when it came to race relations and giving people a chance. And– it was a disgusting moment.
MATT LAUER:
I wonder if some people are going to read that, now that you’ve written it, and they might give you some heat for that. And the reason is this–
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
Don’t care.
MATT LAUER:
Well, here’s the reason. You’re not saying that the worst moment in your Presidency was watching the misery in Louisiana. You’re saying it was when someone insulted you because of that.
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
No – that– and I also make it clear that the misery in Louisiana affected me deeply as well. There’s a lot of tough moments in the book. And it was a disgusting moment, pure and simple.

[From Gawker]

OH NOES. KANYE WILL NOT BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

But seriously, Mr. President? You’re going to say Kanye was “the worst”? For real?!?

Look, while I am not going to pick and choose his lows, one of my ALL TIME lows was the hurricane. My life was taken in a matter of hours, so where the lives of many people. I, myself, hated that anyone would bring in race – it was humanity suffering, not one race more than another. What ever your color when your family, home, job, neighborhood, friends, clothing, EVERYTHING is gone and you have no idea how to start over because the same thing happened to everyone you know – you hurt and you need help.
Kanye West is an ass hat.

  2. mln says:

OH my god forgot about how shocking that was. I actually think Kanye was being genuine at that moment and eventhough I don’t think George Bush hates black people the consequences of his ineptitude directly affected them in NOLA. So in this one case I adored his outburst.

  3. Shay says:

Tacky Kanye can go suck it.
Honestly, hasn’t his media time expired yet?

  4. flourpot says:

    “PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH:
    Don’t care.”

Pretty much sums it up, imo.

  5. K says:

Was he even present for his presidency?! To say that KANYE WEST was the worst moment? Really? What about how our national surplus turned into one of the highest deficits? Or how he fought his father’s war in the Gulf? Sure, he caught Saddam, but at what cost? Or the recession he and his cabinet REFUSED to call a recession because “that’s negative language and doesn’t accurately depict the situation” while unemployment skyrockets? F**ck, Kanye should have left it at “George Bush hates people”. Oye vey…

  6. annaloo says:

I don’t support his politics, but George Bush doesn’t “hate black people.” If that were so, explain Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell. Katrina was extremely painful and Kanye is a sensationalist with a mega-ego and speaking off the cuff …. emotions were running high in the country and people were frustrated to see the suffering. I don’t think either man is a demon, though. It was an extremely unfortunate situation.

  7. Marjalane says:

I think this is somewhat out of context; His disgust having been directed at being thought of as a racist, vs. having it been said by Kanye. Nobody cares about Kanye.

  8. jen says:

Yet that idiot Ray Nagin & his chocolate city remark got a free pass from the complacent media. Double standard much?

  9. Rita says:

Soooo, when in the middle of the devestation Mr. Bush said on national tv “You’re doing a great job Brownie” he wasn’t talking to Kayne? (Maybe he was talking about being unconstipated by eating oven baked pastry laced with yum yum.)

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I think Bush has had worst moments than this one and I think it would have been more effective to dispute Kanye’s claims then instead of now.

  11. ruru says:

Way to stroke his ego, Bush.

  12. Whitey Fisk says:

This is like a battle of the idiots. I can honestly not decide which one of these two is the more egocentric ignoramus.

To choose low points in Bush’s presidency is like shooting fish in a barrel. Name any random date from 2000 – 2008…I guarantee Bush made a disastrous decision before noon that day.

But something beautiful came from that Kanye comment – the cut to Chris Tucker is an absolute gift to humanity. NEVER has the term “deer in the headlights” been more appropriate! That’s comedy gold! Gold, I tell you!

  13. DD says:

George and Kanye are both megalomaniacs. The size of both their ego’s combined would squeeze the rest of us off this planet. They should be best friends.

  14. Angela says:

Wow – two wars that were unpaid for, turning the biggest surplus into a deficit, and guiding the country into the most painful recession since the great depression and his most painful moment was when his feelings got hurt by what a celebrity said? Glad he is gone, wish the rest of his party was.

  15. Stronzilla says:

While I can appreciate the devastation wrought by Katrina and how it highlighted how woefully unprepared the US actually is to organize a mass evacuation and provide aid after a domestic natural disaster I really thought 9/11 represented the lowest point, on so many levels, not the least of which being that as the supreme super power in the world it boggles the mind that with all the technological advancements that exist US intelligence still claimed that they had no forewarning of such a plan, it just ‘happened’. I didn’t believe it then and I don’t believe it now.

Oh, but being insulted by a rap star on national television is so much worse.

  16. Lem says:

    “the reason is this”
    “don’t care”

LMAO. W was a not so great a leader of the free world but he could not be more awesome for cracking me up.
Maybe they could hire him over there at Fox News and let Joel McHale and SNL cover him for eternity.

  17. JaisyMaisy says:

I wish Mike Myers would have turned around and said, “Look, you self-entitled little shit, this isn’t about you!” Kanye is so awful. Oh, I hate him so. He bullies people because they let him. If someone would take him down in public with some harsh words, he might just run away crying and stay quiet for a while.

  18. Kaiser says:

Whitey Fisk – Right? I had forgotten how funny the Chris Tucker cutaway was! I’ve been laughing all morning.

  19. Kate says:

Kanye never said Bush “hates black people”. What he said was–“George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Apathy is not the same as racism. It’s not splitting hairs. He didn’t say Bush was burning crosses in the White House front lawn. Kanye was pointing out the difference in response by the federal government to a crisis that involved a large number of black people. “…the way America was set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible…” Really, how did FEMA & GWB prove him incorrect on this?

IAW person who said “Don’t care” sums it up.

  20. lio says:

If that was is his lowest moment, it must have been a peaceful and successful presidency then…

  21. Praise St. Angie! says:

    jesus H.

first off, if he’s actually saying THAT was the worst part of his presidency, he’s even more out of touch than I thought.

it wasn’t on 9/11/01? or any other time after that when American citizens (HIS F*CKING BOSSES!) were suffering at home or overseas? anytime one (or thousands) of the men and women he sent to Afghanistan or Iraq were killed?

but no, of course it was about HIM. About how HE was insulted, and HIS feelings being hurt by a rapper who essentially just called him a name.

    Mission accomplished, indeed.

(and OH NO is right…this is going to inflate Kanye’s head even more.)

  22. devilgirl says:

Kanye is the all time low of music.

  23. Rachel says:

Take out the ‘black’ and replace it with ‘poor’. That would be the most accurate statement, in my opinion.

  24. Sakyiwaa says:

did Kanye “say” racist or did he “infer” racism? he’s a President. everybody insults the President of their country at one tough time or another. why did he feel so insulted? did he feel like he was breaking his back doing so much to be so unappreciated by someone that way? he’s being way too sensitive. and feeling that way because of no other person than Kanye West. Couldn’t it have taken a personality such as Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi saying something like that to cut him real deep? this admission is just weird from so many angles.

  25. Uzi says:

The “all-time low” of George W. Bush’s presidency was George W. Bush. I can’t stand Kanye, but his comment was spot on.

And George, as far as an “all-time low,” how about 9/11!?

  26. anon says:

@Kate: exactly what you said 🙂
Katrina and 9/11, the wars, torture, BenLadin videos and Kanye West is what he remembers? truth must really hurt.

  27. bros says:

yah this is just one more out of touch idiotic statement made by a man who made out of touch idiotic statements for 8 years and followed them up with idiotic policy decisions. 9/11 wasnt as bad as Kanye? losing thousands of american soldiers in 2 stupid wars wasnt a low point? how about people drowning and dying in the floods of katrina being a low point? screw this asshole. i wish he would permanently shut his trap.

  28. Praise St. Angie! says:

OK, I just read the entire excerpt from the interview.

    whoa.

“I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich.”

too bad you “don’t like hearing it”, bub, BUT IT’S TRUE.

and not that I’m a big Lauer fan, but good on him for this…

“Well, here’s the reason. You’re not saying that the worst moment in your Presidency was watching the misery in Louisiana. You’re saying it was when someone insulted you because of that.”

…and not letting that slip by.

  29. GrnMtGirl says:

Wow…I just don’t even know what to say here.

@ # 14 – his most painful moment was when his feelings got hurt by what a celebrity said? Right!!

    @ # 6 – Kanye is a sensationalist with a mega-ego. Well Said!!

“the reason is this” “don’t care” – Bush’s comment here pretty much sums up his entire presidency…he doesn’t/didn’t care!!

  30. PJ says:

It’s sad that Bush was so personally insulted by Kanye’s remark that he completely missed the message.

The point was not that Bush was a racist, it was that he just didn’t seem to be upset about the unfolding disaster. I’ll never forget Laura Bush on CNN insisting that conditions weren’t really as bad as the media said, when she should have been crying with the rest of us over their unforgettable, heartbreaking stories.

Personally I think Bush is not racist. He just doesn’t care about poor people in general. In this interview Bush also denied that he had passed a tax cut to benefit the rich. Now the top 1 percent has 23 percent of the nation’s wealth.

  31. RHONYC says:

“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway,” she said, “so this is working very well for them.” – barbara bush

    f*ck them all. 🙁

  32. MyCatLoves TV says:

Oblivious to suffering and poverty. And he doesn’t care. Sums Dubya up.

And must agree with everybody here: 9-11 was NOT your low point, George?!?

  33. sickofit says:

@Whitey Fisk: thanks, you made my day with your comment.

  34. BigR says:

Kayne West is a true raciest and should be embarrassed by his own comments. For someone hating raciest, he is the worst.
Too bad Obama wasn’t president then, it would be nice to see how Kayne liked his response to the disaster.

  35. dorothy says:

I don’t agree with some of the things Bush did, but really…Obama has had nothing but lows. Apparently most of America agrees..just look at todays election outcome.

  36. mel says:

What got me about the Katrina crisis was seeing photos of dogs being rescued instead of people. It was a sad situation overall and the one person that could rectify the situation was George W. Bush and his cabinet did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help the people of NO. So GW shouldnt blame Kanye for his incompetent decisions. This is not the first time we’ve seen Bush react to a crisis just remember his reaction to 9/11.

  37. guesty says:

lol @ the both of them…

  38. Sophie says:

He’s not racist, just f-cking incompetent.

  39. GG says:

Hey Mr. West, let’s yank those tacky diamond teeth and give them to the victims of Katrina. What a hypocrite you are. Such a low life, no talent! Ole Dubya has the last laugh now. He sure did a better job than this clown in the white house now!

  40. BigR says:

I agree, the article talks about raciest remark comments not his incompetence. The incompetence is a different subject here.

  41. Lala11_7 says:

    Hey BigR…

HOW IN THE FUGEE CAN A BLACK MAN BE A RACIST?!?! Look up the word?!?! Read your history…

And I’m sorry…KAYNE WAS RIGHT THEN…AND NOW!!! And Bush can sit on his millions and get drunk

  42. icantbelievethis says:

He’s talking about a low moment in his Presidency for HIM (as far as things that were said about him, which were alot).

I love how everyone wants to blame the President (not just GWB) for everything. I didn’t vote for Pres Obama, but I don’t blame hime for the mess we are in now. I blame Congress, look at their approval ratings.

I like Kanye West but his comments were stupid.

  43. Jay says:

My take away from his comments was that this was the lowest point of his Presidency PERSONALLY – and I can see that – I can recall a LOT of things said about him that were ugly, but arguable – that some pipsqeak essentially called him a racist was a baseless and due to the office, and undefendable cut.

Unlike Obama, Bush saw, and respected, the dignity in the Office of the Presidency not to stoop to argue with these kind of comment. Bush weathered a LOT worse than Obama and never attacked anyone personally – whereas Obama calls his opponents names daily. (The reference to his political opponents as “enemies” last week was a first in history – but sadly not surprising from the entitled one.)

Bush was no prize, but he sure dignified the office personally in ways Obama never will, and Kanye doesn’t even know exists.

And the clip makes me feel bad for Mike Myers and Chris Tucker – talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time! Oy!!

  44. irishserra says:

I think Bush and West should be shipped off together to a remote place. They’re both morons.

  45. Hautie says:

What is going unsaid here is that Baby Bush can carry a grudge. For eternity. There is no one more vindictive than Bush. Trust me when I tell you that.

And his equally dim witted wife truly believe he had a successful 8 years. She has said so to the media. More than once. That the world will see that he was right.

The best part of his legacy … is that he had practically an entire University (SMU) fighting to keep his Presidential Library – Think Tank off their campus.

It was all over the Dallas media for years. No one wanted him or his taint on the campus. That the Methodist preachers on the campus really did not want him or his name near their school.

Oh… and how is the current President going to repair the economy… that required Bush and his buddies… 8 years to thoroughly destroy? It would take at least 6 years to see a decent recovery.

There is no quick fix for what took 8 years to kill. So quit laying blame at the current administration. He was not the one who kill it in the first place.

  46. bros says:

jay what in the hell are you talking about? bush dignified the office of the president by ushering in the largest changes/abuses in executive power and privilege in our whole history, chipped away at and had no respect for the constitution, and was an embarrassment abroad with his ignorance and in-eloquence, and his seeming reveling in his own fratboy idiotic persona. please dont try and tell me george bush is more dignified than obama. what a joke.

  47. brin says:

    @GG…totally agree. Obama’s oil spill….nuf said.

  48. Angela says:

Just remember it has taken the Texas Rangers longer than 14 years to recover from Bush, our country has only had two. And Jay – LOL great trolling, you are really funny!

  49. Janine says:

#43 JAY – you are as out of touch with reality as Bush is and was….time to get a grip on what really happened for eight LONG years.

  50. Tomas says:

Hey Jay…Bush was dignified?? That’s the funniest sh*t I’ve heard all week! I think you meant to say a complete embarrassment to the office of the presidency…

  51. Praise St. Angie! says:

    never insulted anyone personally?

does “major league asshole” ring a bell?

    EDIT: “Obama’s oil spill”

um…no. that was due to BP’s lax safety regulations, and not following the safety regulations that WERE in place.

    nice try, though.

  52. Tomas says:

#39 how exactly is “ole dubya” having the last laugh? he is known worldwide as a complete idiot, a liar and the worst president in modern times.

  53. brin says:

@Praise….on his watch & he didn’t do much about it except blame BP.

  54. Cheyenne says:

They don’t call him Du(m)bya for nothing.

  55. brin says:

@Tomas….let’s hold off on that “worst president in modern times” title….think we have another candidate for that.

  56. Tazina says:

Oh please. What about Iraq, Hurricane Katrina? Instead, the comments of a rapper count the most? What a dumb twit.

  57. Erin says:

Holeeey crap. I have never seen that video. Hi-larious! What a delightful way to start the day! Mike Meyers and Chris Tucker look very itchy!

  58. Praise St. Angie! says:

on his watch, sure…but HOW is it his fault? please explain.

and what do you suggest he should have done?

EDIT: to add, what does Obama’s responsibility and/or response to the spill have to do with Bush’s out-of-touch comment?

    DEFLECTION at it’s best!

  59. bellaluna says:

Just, Wow! If that’s the lowest point in his presidency (to him), he’s even worse off than I thought. I know there’s a deep stupidity there, but is there a touch of Alzheimer’s (or maybe Early Onset Dementia) in play here as well?

Another note: Love how the Republicans f*cked up our lives for 8 long years but everyone expects the Dems to fix it in less than 4. Brilliance!

  60. texasmom says:

Having lost a family member in the World Trade Center and living in Houston where tens of thousands of desperate, DESPERATE people from NOLA were bussed in, needing water, clothing, diapers, a place to rest their weary heads and take a shower. . . hearing that old’ Dubya’s low point was being called out by a rapper.

I will always love Kanye for that. He’s a big ol’ jerk, but he called it and called it right. See Kate’s response above for the explanation. “Doesn’t care” was the operative phrase. It was true then and it’s true now.

  61. brin says:

No deflection….I’m just tired of all the Bush bashing still after he’s been out of office for 2 years.
Obama (administration)sat on the oil spill & down played it..he didn’t know what to do & did nothing.
Honestly whoever is pres. gets blamed for everything.

  62. MissyA says:

    WOW! Just. . . WOW!

I love how he’s not at all embarrassed or upset at the ill-contemplated response and under-funded execution of his cabinet as they fumbled through a natural disaster (it was abysmal and shameful – and I wonder what the response time would be if the storm landed in an affluent area) – he’s mad that someone called him a hurtful name?!?

The man has the mentality of a 16-year-old boy and he ran our country for 8 years. I weep.

    I’m just. . . dumbfounded.

  63. Zelda says:

    @JAy
I don’t know if you’re a troll or what, but your comments made me laugh at least.
As a Canadian now living in Eastern Europe (two very different political climates) I can tell you that “dignified” is not a word anyone outside of a red state would ever apply to that GWB. His dim-wittedness, shameless eagerness for war, and self-interest was evident to people only tangentally aware of American politics. Your president was the laughingstock all over the world. When he was re-elected the rest of the world didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Instead we just shook our heads and braced for more war and economic instability.

Then both came. And you all managed to somehow be shocked.

And I remember well this classy and “dignified” president calling someone a “major-league *sshole” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/910614.stm
SO don’t know what you’re talking about there.

That said, we both agree to feel really bad for Mike Myers on this one. Poor b*stard.

  64. Praise St. Angie! says:

brin, if the post is about Bush and his presidency, it has ZERO to do with Obama and so yes, it’s deflection. when you bring up something that is TOTALLY UNRELATED to the subject at hand as a counter-argument, it’s deflection, pure and simple.

he may have been out of office for two years, but his book is out NOW, and this interview is CURRENT. so was his ridiculous comment about his lowest point. if he doesn’t want to be bashed, he should stay out of the spotlight. plus, his failings are still affecting us today, so it’s not like him being out of office for two years means his polices aren’t still affecting us.

but I’m still wondering. HOW is the spill Obama’s fault? and what should he have done differently?

  65. Cheyenne says:

Zelda: Your president was the laughingstock all over the world. When he was re-elected the rest of the world didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  66. Cheyenne says:

@Praise: The Teabaggers think Obama should have dived headfirst into the Gulf and capped the oil spill with his teeth.

    🙄

  67. Zelda says:

    @Angela re: The Texas Rangers
    hahahahha

  68. craigc says:

    Kanye = DOUCHE

  69. bellaluna says:

Speaking of teabaggers, do you think they know the “other” definition of that concept? 😉

@ Cheyenne – I believe “Dubya” is the ultimate Jessica Simpson of the American presidency.

  70. jzhz says:

I can’t believe that anyone would be pissed at Kanye West, a stupid celebrity, in this situation. W was our PRESIDENT. How anyone would take Kanye West very seriously and critique him while not mentioning the lunacy that was W explains how we got into this economic morass to begin with. We have all these opportunities, and we are an intellectually lazy people. Ugh.

  71. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

ahhhh, Praise & Bros, we can ALWAYS count on you to rock! Articulate, logical, funny. Awesome posts!

  72. Lia says:

No, Kanye honey, he cares about “black people”. He just doesn’t care about YOU, just like the rest of us.

  73. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Ugh, I had forgotten about the Quaker Oats–Barbara Bush’s comments about the Superdome. I wanted to clutch those pearls of hers and throw them into the ocean. Her and O’Reilly.

I also remember when the big search for Britney Spears’ family was on, and Praise, the were alright. Of course, there weren’t in poorer area so they danger level was comparatively low but now we knew the heroes were safe.

  74. Tomas says:

#55 anyone one comparing obama to bush is showing their true ignorance. feel free to recall that bush walked into the white house with a bustling america and a huge SURPLUS in our treasury. while obama walked into the white house with a country that had been raped by the bush administration…people losing their jobs, their homes, the worst recession/depression in 75 years and a $3 TRILLION DEFICIT in the treasury all courtesy of george w. bush!!!

  75. Jeri says:

George W is as out of touch as ever. We’re living his legacy today.

Republicans take heed, this is your future.

  76. teehee says:

I never saw that video till now and OMG what an idiot and racist Kanye is. When you cant see anythign but race, you think and act like a racist no matter what side you are on or why. When you cant see reality, reason properly, and when you deduce everythign in the world based on the color of peoples skin, and especially when you pit one color against another as he did, that makes you an igorant fool and that, in a nutshell, is Kanye West.

  77. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Really Bush? Kanye saying that you don’t care about black people was the worst most disgusting moment?

I can’t even form thoughts I’m so blindsided by that special kind of stupidity.

Praise you rock by the way.

lol @Lala11_7, your comment made me laugh. You need to look up the word racism, because anyone can be a racist or a bigot, not only a white man.

I was in NO during the hurricane and was around to see the aftermath of it. I do not believe the government was prepared to cope with the scale of the disaster, but for the most part that responsibility lay with the local government. They had received significant funding to either/or reinforce the levees and come up with a plan of action in case of this kind of scenario. Instead choices were made to spend that money on museums and other tourist attractions. That cannot be blamed on the federal government.

I would also argue that the government threw a few thousand dollars at everybody and then let it lie. People still aren’t back in their homes in NO. A lot of people will never be able to return. Many homes remain gutted and entire neighborhoods have been decimated. I am a democrat and an Obama supporter, but if Bush didn’t care about black people, then neither does Obama, because he certainly hasn’t done any more for the people of NO.

  79. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t think it matters if you don’t like Kanye, he’s not the issue here because no one ever died on his watch. Still whatever you may think of Kanye, it doesn’t turn Bush into a better leader or person. And so what if he said it, are we to to hang, draw and quarter him? He can criticize the president and frankly, I’ve seen ideas in this thread that are far more immflamatory, but if W. wants to square things, he still hasn’t learned that a coherent sentence and basic listening skills is a good place to start.

Shouldn’t he wonder(even if he doesn’t feel that way, but, pffft), why it is that so many people have been saying this? Does he really think that Kanye West is the only man who believes this, or is everyone who thinks he didn’t do right by various disenfranchised groups just obsessed with punishing the presedent?

Everybody knows that Kanye looooves the sound of his own voice and is terribly skilled at getting the attention that he wants, so he has a million other ways to get it. Enough people have held W.’s hand (almost inexplicably, Condi) and taken the heat for his follies, well, no one can blame this on Cheney.

So Bush whines and grouses over something pop star said over five years ago, and then when he’s asked to consider the other side he totally disengages? There’s good debating style, good for diplomacy, I’ll bet. But don’t pull that ‘I refuse to dignify that cur with a response’ junk when it lies at the centre of once of the major incidents of your presidency.

Anyway, I can’t explain this guy, I’ll just in circles. He’s like Lucy with the football and any attempt to make sense of that interview will just me a headache.

  80. bereal says:

I think it’s funny that Kanye is still even relevant after all of the shit he’s done over the years

  81. truthSF says:

It all boils down to rich people in power don’t care about poor people, no matter their race.

p.s. Kanye hasn’t done sh*t for black people either, only thing he’s been doing lately is stroking his ego and TYPING IN ALL CAPS.

  82. jc126 says:

So THAT was the lowest moment of his presidency, huh? Not perhaps the war in Iraq over non-existent WMDs that has killed thousands? Where is Osama bin Laden, anyway?
I don’t miss this guy at ALL.
Oh, and in regards to that telethon – when it happened, did anyone else think of an old SNL episode with Heather Locklear as the guest host, and she and Mike Myers are doing a skit about a home shopping network? She looked like this very all-American housewife type who suddenly starts spewing horribly racist comments. Myers played the straight man/host who tries to act normal and get the show back on track. When I saw Kanye, I thought, that skit is happening for real!

  83. bros says:

i agree with you mostly truth SF, however, isnt it interesting that the south could be counted on to vote democratic in every election UNTIL the 1964 civil rights act was passed? the civil rights act was ironically the best thing that ever happened to republicans. not saying every southerner is racist; clearly this is not the case. however, I would not want to discount a racial element to our politics and policies.

  84. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz says:

So 9/11 wasn’t his lowest moment eh? Unbelieveable. I’m not even American but I can tell you that most people would put that down as the all time low of this decade and definitely one of the lowest lows ever. Still can’t believe this guy was voted not once, but TWICE into power. I will never understand American politics.

  85. Praise St. Angie! says:

“No, Kanye honey, he cares about “black people”. He just doesn’t care about YOU, just like the rest of us.”

I’d say he does, since Kanye’s comment was the “all-time low” of his presidency. seems like he cares about kanye quite a bit.

I am reminded of a line from a movie. “must have hit pretty close to the mark to get him all riled up like that”.

if DUHbya knows he’s not a racist, then he could have responded to that comment with something like “that’s simply not true, my record with minorities speaks for itself” but instead he names it the worst moment of his presidency? Methinks thou doth protest too much, Mr. Bush.

to TruthSF…actually, Kanye has a foundation that helps keeps kids from dropping out of school by introducing them to creative programs. Not that I’m a fan of his (I think he’s an arrogant ninny) but he does try to give back. I do agree with you, however, that his favorite thing in this world is himself.

(and thank you to everyone for the kind words!)

  86. original kate says:

i would have thought his lowest personal moment would have been when he was showing an 11% approval rating, which i believe was the lowest in recent history for any president. bush is one of those guys who was born on third base and thought he hit a triple.

  87. Lucky says:

what I dont get is why people here always insult others that don’t agree with you. Don’t we have freedom of speech and respect in this country anymore. I always though that maybe a couple of you should go to Haiti and other countries to learn how to respect your country more. Or maybe you all are just jackasses

  88. julie says:

@original kate- your last sentence is the funniest thing i’ve read all day. made me forget what i was going to write here and nearly spit my soda out on my screen. thanks for the laugh.

  89. Toni says:

Uh yeah Kanye does have charity programs, just cause you’re to lazy to check into, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Yeah and black Americans can’t be racist. Being racist is blocking education, employment, and prohibiting where someone can live. White people own almost everything in America. You’re delusional if you think if it was white folks in NO, they wouldn’t have been cared for right away. Black folks owned the houses they lived in. How is not owning property living in squaler. Anybody worried about a rappers ego. A rapper who actually has charities is just as out of touch as Bush.

  90. Zelda says:

    @Lucky
    huh?
I haven’t noticed a whole lot of disrespect in this thread.

  91. Toni says:

Oh and Bush’s comment about giving anyone a chance. Oh even blacks. Thanks Bush.

  92. Meanchick says:

I agree that Bush is extremely crazy if THIS was his worst moment. I can name several, more than several.

  93. Toni says:

Kayne had alot of balls to say what he said. He was speaking from the heart, which is sometime not the popular thing. He got up and said what we were thinking. I’ve met people involved in it. I’m in Oklahoma. People were coming here alot too.

  94. anon says:

Is Bush aware that not everyone will even know who Kanye West is? At least I hope more people know who the President of the United States was and is (nationally and internationally) scary to think he (Bush) would immortalize Kanye like that. oh well, there is google and youtube so they can find out who caused Bush’s lowest moment in 8 years 🙂

  95. Mistral says:

As a Canadian, I watched everything unfolding in Louisiana over the news. When Kanye said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people”, he was drawing a conclusion based on what we were all seeing on our televisions. I’m inclined to agree with him–George Bush and the ruling elite of the US don’t care about people who are poor.

The response to such a huge emergency was slow and incompetent. Most of the people I saw on the television seemed to be poor and black. I seriously doubt the response would have been so slow and incompetent if the disaster had happened in Manhattan.

George Bush is mad that Kanye called him out. Now he is trying to deflect. He is attempting to use, what I would call, the “Taylor Swift” card.

Bush is trying to gain sympathy for himself by calling Kanye’s comments “disgusting”. He knows that most people are mad at Kanye for making a no-talent-but-cute little blonde girl cry at an awards show. Boo Hoo! Oh that meanie Kanye!

    Bush’s writers/PR people are savvy enough…

However, anyone with any critical thinking skills won’t be taken in by such tactics. 911, Fake WMD, wasting America’s money, throwing away young American lives for the benefit of the old boys profiting from the military industrial complex, etc., etc… I’m pretty sure these should have been bigger low points…

  96. Lady D says:

@Mistral…Came to the same conclusion the day before Kayne’s rant. It was my 14-year-old that started that conversation by asking me why Bush didn’t like black people. Like you Mistral, what we saw on T.V. were poor, black people.
Remember the signs in the football stadium. Great big huge “water please” signs. Something as simple as frikken water was denied to these people for five inexcusable days. This from the greatest nation on earth.

  97. Cheyenne says:

As far as Bush is concerned, blacks and Hispanics have three strikes against them: we’re not rich, we’re not Republican, and we didn’t vote for him.

I will never forget Bush’s first comments after Katrina hit: We’re going to help Trent Lott rebuild his house. I was like, WTF?! Trent Lott is a rich man. He can rebuild his own damn house and several more. But what about the little people who lost everything and barely escaped with their lives? Was he even thinking about helping them get back on their feet? Hell no, all he was focused on was helping some big-ass Republican rebuild his house.

  98. ERM says:

Thank goodness for the interview because I was beginning to soften on Bush! It’s always about him, isn’t it? That’s how we got into Iraq – he was leftover pissy from the Gulf War.

  99. DrM says:

The truth hurts eh Mr President?

  100. poopie says:

KANYE WHO? what a pig douche..is he sleeping in the lincoln bedroom now permanently? i’m sure O took him under his executive wing..and yea, O sure has helped put N.O. back together, hasn’t he?hahhahahahahhahahahhahahahhahaha

  101. lena80 says:

It amazes how people don’t think race and class played a part in the Katrina response. It’s like some of you live in this world where these things do not exist…please let me in. Like others have stated what did you see when you looked at televison? All I saw was black people who were poor! Of course there are other ethnics groups there, but the majority of folks are black. Do you honestly think the response would have been that slow if the hurricane happened in the Hamptons?

Furthermore, Black people or any RACIAL minority for that matter in this country CAN NOT be racist. Being a racist implies that one has inherent superiority to execute POWER over someone based on their race…so please tell me in the history of this country what race has historically been superior or have had the “power” over racial minorities? Yeah I rest my case. Now racial minorities can be PREJUDICED,….treating people a certain way based on their race. This is different from racist. It amazes me how people use these terms interchangeably as if they mean the same thing when they don’t. Sociology 101 people. Enroll.

So yeah Kanye is a douche, but he was speaking from the heart and responding to what he was seeing on his television….which was black, poor people dying by hundreds while our president waited and waited and waited to respond to the disaster.

And just lol at you idiots who are bringing Obama and BP oil spill into this…yeah cause Obama can swim to the bottom of the ocean and plug the hole. Look up how Obama had difficulty doing anything with BP because of laws that were put in place BEFORE his presidency.

  102. bellaluna says:

    The bottom line is this:

NO ONE in government cares about poor people, no matter their race. It’s a fundamental flaw in our system. “By the People; from the People; for the People” no longer applies: put a single mother in office. She’ll pinch a penny until bleeds and make EVERYBODY get along, dammit!

  103. melinda says:

Agree. President Bush didn’t/doesn’t care about POOR people regardless of race.

  104. Nibbi says:

probably the one thing i can give Kanye any credit for- he’s completely dickish, but it seems he managed to wipe that smug smirk off GWB’s face for about half a minute

  105. Jaye E says:

@Brin…what Bush bashing? It seems a large majority of the American public have developed a severe case of selective amnesia when it comes to what this country endured at the hands of G-Dub. Meanwhile, they also seem to want to blame Obama for not being able to clean up in 2 years a mess that it took 8 years to make. If you ask me, there’s not been enough Bush bashing.
