Us Weekly: Kate Middleton is “encouraged to listen, not talk” to the Queen

usweekly2

You know how I was kind of making fun of Us Weekly’s Kate Middleton story this week? Well, my bad. It’s actually a really good piece for those of us who love royal gossip and junk. The cover story is very lengthy, so I’m just going to do the highlights:

*Kate will have an entourage from here on out: She used to be able to take a bus or a cab with just her sister, but now she has an entourage. “Now, she has a full entourage in tow,” Katie Nicholl tells Us. “The enormity of what she’s in is finally sinking in.” She’s losing some freedom and independence, but that is “the price she’ll pay for falling in love with the future king.”

*Kate in “encouraged” to have a voice, unlike Princess Diana: “If Kate was to voice something to William or an aide, it would not be ignored. She in encouraged to speak up,” says a senior palace source. “The palace has learned from the past with Diana.”

*The senior palace source also says: “William is determined for this to be the beginning of a new royal family with new ways of doing things. He wants his marriage to last.”

*Since the engagement announcement, Kate has been staying at Clarence House, not Buckingham Palace. Clarence House is the residence of the Prince of Wales (and former residence of the Queen Mum). She has weekly meetings with the royal wedding planners, and she seems to be a “good planner.”

*Her parents are finding it hard to cope with the fact that there’s an armed police car at the end of their driveway.

*Williams is still going to make Kate cook for him and do all of the housework: “they don’t plan on having butlers or valets and Kate will still cook and host dinner parties.” That is, there are no plans for any of that when they are in Wales, for William’s training. While Kate is in London, she’s got a full staff at her disposal.

*Kate plans to make her younger (wild) sister Pippa her lady-in-waiting. Katie Nicholl defined a lady in waiting as: “The Queen has between 3 and 10. She trusts them to help her select outfits, wait in the car with her, pick out her favorite posies and help with her crossword. It’s a rare intimacy. It’s unpaid.”

*Kate and William did a an engagement photo shoot with Mario Testino (“the same acclaimed star photographer who took iconic pictures of Princess Diana shortly before her death.”) It was a “top secret session.” A St. James spokesperson confirmed that the photoshoot took place “privately with Prince William.”

*In the nine years of dating, Kate has “lost her puppy fat.” Since she began dating the future King eight years ago, Middleton has transformed from “a university student into a woman,” Simone Simmons, a close pal of the late Princess Diana, tells Us. “I call it that she lost her puppy fat!”

*Workouts: While in London, Middleton works out regularly at the Clarence House gym — and gets beautified at Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa in the British city’s Sloane Square.

*On curtsying: “When a nonblood royal is with a royal spouse, they take on their spouse’s elevated rank,” according to the mag. If Kate sees Camilla and Charles, Kate has to curtsy, but if Charles is not around and Kate is with William, Camilla has to curtsy. And none of the low debutante dip curtsying! It should be “just a bob down, about 10 centimeters.” And! Kate has to walk a step behind Prince William (just like Prince Philip has to walk behind the Queen.)

*On grooming: “Kate is always perfectly manicured, and she will have blow-dries before she goes out,” says Katie Nicholl, royal watcher and author of William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls. She adds that Middleton and William, also 28, likely got their teeth whitened in advance of their engagement announcement.

*The Queen has deigned to take an interest in Kate. Nicholl says: “Their relationship is fascinating.” Kate will likely have weekly meetings with the Queen, where she will be encouraged to listen, not talk.

*Once married, Kate and William will likely be given their own apartment in Kensington Palace – maybe even Princess Diana’s old apartment. Creepy.

See? It’s epic. I know most you don’t care, but I can’t get enough. I think very, very, VERY soon we’re going to start seeing bits and pieces of the “real” Kate – the one who isn’t content to just be an “army wife” ignored and alone, without even a bustling staff to do everything for her. My guess is that Kate is going to be spending a great deal of the engagement in London, theoretically to “plan the wedding” but really because she enjoys the staff.

One last thing – HuffPo reports that Kate and Will have to have a “therapy” session with some Church of England priest. Prince William’s spokesperson says: “It’s customary for a priest to meet with the couple before their wedding.” They will discuss how to deal with marital problems, parenthood, etc.

46565, NORTHLEACH, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM - Tuesday November 16 2010. FILE PICTURE DATED Saturday October 23 2010. Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged and will marry in 2011, Clarence House announced today. The announcement came after speculation reached fever pitch following a visit by Kate's parents to the Queen's Scottish estate last month. The invitation was seen as a clear sign that the couple were poised to announce they were marrying. They have been together for eight years and have recently been spending much of their time in north Wales where William is a search and rescue pilot. Their wedding, scheduled for 2011, will be the biggest royal event since the wedding of William's mother and father. I love all this royal stuff, too, Kaiser. Guess cause we don’t have them here. I just really like the fact that William seems to have Kate’s back. I really do think they are a team and he will protect her from “the Firm”.
    That’s my hope, anyway.

  2. Bibi says:

Perhaps it is the Queen who should listen. Two of her sons are callow and have excessive hubris.

  3. Rita says:

I like these two. We all know “likability” skips a generation in royal blood lines and it’s nice to know the genetic sequence is alive and well.

As far as Kate doing “all the house work”, that might be a little time consuming when they move into the palace.

“Honey, my royal princess, you missed a spot. Prince Rover marked mummy’s favorite sculpture again.”

  4. Jackson says:

IDK, it all sounds pretty standard and expected. The part that always has, and always will, rub me the wrong way is the curtsying and walking a step behind. That is just ridiculous. I know it is ‘protocol’ but it’s absurd and dated and just asinine. I’ll bow before my God, not some foolio who had the good luck to be born into a royal family.

  5. Diane says:

Fascinating, I’m kind of addicted to this stuff.

  6. Eleonor says:

The future wife of a future king cooking dinner? Who can believe it?

  7. Heather says:

Poor William is really going bald, isn’t he?

  8. JulieM says:

Sorry, I see this as a load of PR garbage. I don’t believe most of it; especially that Kate will cook and clean. What BS. The only thing I do believe is her spending the engagement in London because she “worked” 9 years for that entourage and staff and, by golly, she’s going to enjoy it. Good for her until she really gets what she asked for.

You all can go wobbly and soft on Waity No Longer Katie, but I won’t. Enjoy!

  9. guesty says:

so not into this @ all on any level.

howev…if ph ever gets married that will be fab.

  10. bubbles says:

okay, that pix of the back of his head is completely gratuitous and wrong. Shame on you!!!!!!! why can’t you focus on the the obviou?s this kid would have made his mother proud. with or without hair.

  11. bros says:

i love this stuff too. i find it super hard to believe she is going to be cooking and cleaning. yah to the right. that will consist of directing their staff on what they would like cooked for dinner, planning a menu, and supervising the maid staff for cleaning. there is no way blow out manicured kate is going to slave away at a stove and clean it afterward; she will just do as much as amuses her, if she likes cooking. its going to be a hobby, not a duty, and she wont have to do the dishes after.

  12. Listerino says:

not digging the bald spot, but it is fascinating to hear all these details on how royals live. I think all that curtsying crap is ridiculously old fashioned and should be scrapped. How is she supposed to remember when to curtsy and when not to? I know I wouldn’t.

  13. P.J. says:

What impresses me about Kate is that for one, she’s gorgeous, and two, her demeanor is always appropriate. She has never done or said anything to raise an eyebrow. Plus she and William seem truly in love, so isn’t it great!

I’m a little surprised at the high degree of maturity and caring William is showing, by really going out of his way to make the transition as easy as possible for her, and saying how important it is to him that this marriage be a happy one. It took him several years to make up his mind, but now that he has done it, he seems to be truly committed to the relationship.

  14. Eleonor says:

William saw what happened to his mother and it seems he’s going to do everything to keep Kate safe from “the firm”.

  15. REALIST says:

OMG! Run. Run away! Very fast-to America, where we have citizens and NOT subjects!

  16. mslewis says:

I believe that Kate and Wills will do the cooking and cleaning . . . at their little place in Wales NOT at their London residence. If they do get Diana’s old Kensington apartment, it is 15 rooms! I can’t see Kate cleaning 15 rooms. Plus, if she does these royal duties she won’t have the time anyway.

Also, I will bet a dollar that Kate WILL NOT walk two steps behind William. I don’t think he will insist on it and I think he will make her his equal, as much as possible. This family needs a little updating and I think William will do it, a bit at a time, so Queenie won’t notice.

And Kaiser, I do like hearing about the royals but only until the wedding is over. But then there will be the “Baby Watch” going on so I guess I’ll just have to sit back and enjoy.

  17. KK says:

    She doesn’t look 29………she looks 40.

  18. Green Is Good says:

    Wills wedding present: Rogaine.

  19. bluhare says:

    Keep it coming, Kaiser.

And I agree with you re “real Kate” coming out. When I watched their engagement interview and she was asked about Diana, William swooped in and answered it for her. If I’m not mistaken she pursed her lips and looked really annoyed for a minute.

  20. Amy says:

William is definitely going to try to modernize the royal family. Once Queen Liz dies, I think the family will be dropping all stupid royal traditions like curtsying. Honestly the only person I can’t stand in the family is the queen. She just seems like such a pill.

  21. abbizmal says:

I love this stuff, too, Kaiser. Keep on keeping us informed on all of it. Even without the dirt that could be fascinating, it is still interesting to me.

  22. norma says:

oh please – do the housework my arse.

  23. Wresa says:

Love the royal wedding stuff, but am confused by the “puppy fat” bit. Is that a British phrase? I’ve seen pictures of her when he met her and she certainly had no “puppy fat!”

  24. Selena says:

Hey Realist, I hate to tell you this but you don’t have citizens in the USA. You are subjects of your Presidents, Paris Hilton types and TSA type security measures. America has simply supplanted royalty with Presidents and celebrity. Have a look at what your government has done in the name of security lately, hardly free citizenry. The only thing you don’t have is the traditions that go back into history. But you are trying desperately to make up for that too with some traditions of your own.

  25. Jeri says:

That life sounds very difficult, it takes a special type of person to agree to and thrive in those conditions.

Good luck to them both. I hope they’ll be very happy and have a successful marriage in every way.

  26. Fue says:

That dress and jacket in the third photo is horrendous. The hat (with long hair) is even more ridiculous. And now she has become a fashion icon in Britain. G-d help them; what a drabby bunch.

  27. Aspie says:

More royal wedding stories! I love it!

  28. Sarcasma says:

    well said @Fue!

    such drabby fashion sense

the hats, the dresses, the boots

    BLEARGH!
