People’s issue with Knox and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt was 4th highest selling in 35 years

$14 million may seem like way too steep a price to pay for photos of newborn babies, but the Jolie-Pitts have four other kids and they stole the show in the super-expensive photo spread in People. Women’s Wear Daily reports that the high price tag was worth it for People, which split the cost with Hello. The issue sold 2.6 million copies, which is 1.1 million more than People normally sells and makes it the fourth highest selling issue ever. It was also on the racks longer than a normal issue, and was out two days earlier and was available for three weeks, up until today. People priced the magazine at .50 more than their current $3.99 an issue cost.

The Brangelina twins were the highest selling People issue in the past seven years, and the fourth in the magazine’s 35 year history. It was only topped by issues that covered the early deaths of Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy Jr. and the tragedy of 9/11.

The issue is the biggest seller in seven years, and is the fourth highest newsstand seller in the magazine’s 35-year history, behind the Sept. 11 issue (4.1 million single copies), the issue covering Princess Diana’s death (3 million) and the one covering the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. (2.8 million). The June 19, 2006 issue with the exclusive baby pictures of Brad and Angelina’s first daughter, Shiloh, moved 2.2 million newsstand copies (perhaps the extra Pitt-Jolie baby provided a bigger draw this time).

The issue’s 2.6 million newsstand sale is way above People’s average weekly newsstand sale of 1.5 million copies, but the issue has been on newsstands longer than a typical one. People released the issue on Aug. 4, two days before its regular newsstand drop date, and the issue will stay on stands for three weeks through Aug. 25. But People also raised its cover price for the special issue, to $4.49, or 50 cents more than its regular price. Along with the 2.6 million copies the issue is projecting to sell on newsstands, the babies also reached 2.3 million People subscribers, according to first-half numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

[From WWD]

Shiloh wasn’t a slouch herself if she sold 2.2 million copies. The money for the twin photos will go to charity and most of us can agree that’s a good thing despite some people’s insistence that it be donated right now and not when the Jolie-Pitt Foundation finds a suitable way to distribute it among worthy causes. I thought the interview was pretty candid and worth reading and the photos were gorgeous. It was really cute to see their other kids cradling the twins and my favorite photo was the one of Maddox and Pax each holding one of the babies with Brad in the middle with his arms around them both. One of the newborns was yawning as a blue-mohawked Maddox looked on curiously and you just got a sense that the boys were trying to be careful. It was worth the price of the magazine.

    Bitter pill time, methinks.

    Well said Dante πŸ˜‰

Heartbreaking as those mega-selling past issues are, mine are stained with tears, the Jolie-Pitt twins issue is a happy one. πŸ™‚
To everyone who doubted the public’s interest in this lovely family, the numbers speak volumes, it’s crow eating time.

  4. duda says:

Dante you are now our spokesperson to all the haters…

  5. daisy424 says:

Actually duda, Ms. Z is the spokesperson to all the haters πŸ˜‰

Dante’s words coming out of her mouth would have made a great header picture. πŸ˜›

edit* RAN it was the JFK, Jr issue. Remember it well, I wore black for a year………

  6. RAN says:

Ahh well, I guess I missed out. I should have bought it I guess… I have the other two of my generation (9/11 and Princess Diana – I wasn’t around for JFK’s issue). I guess my pop culture savvy is fading πŸ˜†

  7. geronimo says:

“…Dante’s words coming out of her mouth would have made a great header picture.”

Oh yeah, Daisy, how funny would that be – gravatar of Ms Z combined with vdantev’s delicious acidity. BADettes online logo, I’m thinking…

  8. dumdee says:

before AJ decided to play mother teresa, she had a porn star face. haha totally random

  9. Bodhi says:

That is my favorite pic too, CB.

  10. Kaiser says:

CB & Bodhi – I loved that pic too. Also loved the one of Viv (I think?), Princess Z & Brad, where Z is smiling like a maniac, like her dad is telling her, “Don’t worry, the twins are great, but you’ll still rule the world.”

  11. czarina says:

My favorite photo was the one of Shiloh lying on top of Maddox…it just seemed like a spontanious, fun moment.
As for the money…Brad and Angelina could have kept the money. The photos weren’t sold on the condition that the money go to charity…it is theirs to do with as they wish. The fact that they choose to donate it is admirable, but nobody has the right to start making demands or telling them when and how they should distribute it–that’s not donation money from the public; it belongs to them, period.

how sad…that’s what the proles are spending their hard earned money on….

  13. daisy424 says:

Worth every cent πŸ˜‰ How are things on D-Listed?

  14. Mairead says:

Celebitchy… you mean right now, with full press coverage and an invitation to the haters to personally stand over them signing the cheque and handing it to the charity. And then following the charity to the bank to make sure they lodge it. Then waiting around for three days until the cheque clears. Checking the charity’s account details to make sure that it has indeed gone through. Having the account statement notorised or witness by Jesus – whichever is more awkward. And then complaining that it was all a set-up and Angelina herself plotted to pull the wool over their eyes.

Then promptly forget that it ever happened so that they can complain the money wasn’t paid over

I think I got everything

Nina… that be the free market Comrade. πŸ˜‰

Actually I couldn’t spend my filthy capitalist Euro as they appeared to have sold out in my town. 😯

  15. Kaiser says:

Czarina – Honestly, back maybe a month ago, I found some articles that suggested that the Brange simply gave away the photos under the condition that Getty Images (who, I guess, were technically the ones who got paid) donate the money to charity.

But I don’t really know. Bless them even if they’re giving away half of that money.

@Mairead – Filthy, filthy capitalist. You should be ashamed.

And the baby Jesus is a notary?!?!? ZOMG NOTARY.

  16. duda says:

Well till lil Ms.Z can get her typing up to par.. we can take pics of her with a balloon of dantes words coming out..

  17. KERRI says:

Nina: What are proles?? Did I miss something here?

LOVE THE spread and my favorite is the one where the whole family is goofing around on the sofa. Au Natural!

  19. Blanche says:

I just don’t see what the big deal is about these two and their brood.
And what I REALLY don’t get is how people will hate on other people that they don’t even know on behalf of these two. That is sheer craziness.
    They aren’t worth the energy.

I have had it uptohere with celebrity babies, anyway.

  20. vdantev says:

how sad…that’s what the proles are spending their hard earned money on…

Better get all the mileage out of those 50 cent college words now while you still can, between bites of humble pie.

  21. Nan says:

proles=proletariat. & Cindy Kennedy wonders why celebrities should bother to go to college when they have soooo much money…

  22. nina says:

vdantev, what did you mean? i am afraid a Master’s degree is not enough to understand your “clever” one liners. Maybe I should go get a PHD and then try again….

  23. Snowblood says:

Maybe you should, Nina. Maybe you should. πŸ˜†

  24. nina says:

True, Snowblood. I am sure you could recommend a distinguished PhD program or two, from your personal experience.

  25. Snowblood says:

Are you trying to bait-pick a pointless, off-topic fight with me, “Nina,” since you have absolutely NOTHING at all that you can say about the fact that the Jolie-Pitt’s People magazine issue was so enormously successful? πŸ˜† I don’t respond to bitter, boring, uneducated petty bullshit baiting from commentors who’ve proven to be so relentlessly unfunny, malicious, ignorant and unkind. Not calling YOU these things, I’m just sayin’. In general. πŸ™„

  26. nina says:

Snowblood, I commented exactly why it was so successful – because people have bad taste. πŸ™‚

  27. daisy424 says:

Nina; Education is not a standard for good taste. I fail to see your ‘logic’.

  28. I choose me says:

^^ I’m not people. I’m a BADette. I bask regularly in the magical, ethereal glow that emanates from the Jolie-Pitt clan. My taste therefore is impeccable and impeachable. You’re just mad ’cause you’re you and not one of US. But do not despair, you have only to succumb to the magic that is Brangelina and you too can be saved.

  29. Bodhi says:

πŸ˜† Mairead!! Its like you have 6th sence for these things

    And πŸ˜† I choose! You’re quite the evangelical! πŸ˜€

  30. daisy424 says:

    πŸ™‚ BADettes

“Brad Pitt photographed Angelina Jolie and the six kiddies at their chateau in France last week for the November cover of W magazine”

  31. Snowblood says:

Oh!! I can’t WAIT to see those Pitt-ctures! YES!!!

  32. duda says:

always keeps me in stitches… πŸ˜›

  33. Bodhi says:

Wait a tick. Is the same “Nina” that jump all freaking over me for using the phrase “spewing shite”?

    *snort*

  34. Snowblood says:

Yes. Same bitch, Bodhi. She TRIED to start me up, but I don’t have time for her tedious, ignorant ass. I like commenting and having a good time online with the BADdest bitches here, and the cool chicks, but sanctimonious types and truly batshit insulting whackjobs, if one isn’t careful, can suck the fun joy right out of any casual comment session around here. You know?

  35. Bodhi says:

I do indeed. What kills me is the pseudo-intellectual bullshit.

  36. Snowblood says:

Yeah! Especially when they try to come off as intellectually advanced in some profound way, yet cannot figure out how to compose a grammatically sound sentence, or spell a word right, or conduct simple online research to insure their statements contain verifiable facts. You know, things a REAL intellectual would know & would do πŸ˜†

  37. geronimo says:

@I Choose Me – such wisdom! If only they’d succumb….

I see my BADettes are effortlessly rising to the top as usual, sending the fun-suckers packing.

  38. I choose me says:

^^ Er, supposed to be unimpeachable. My English proffesor would so smack me if she saw that. 😳

  39. Lola says:

Simple maths shows that the magazines did not make their money back, not by half given the distribution costs and other related costs for this particular issu. Then again, I guess they did not expect to recoup their expense. However, they must have expected it to become the highest selling issue of all time. Imagine their surprise when the engineers they hired to handle the site crush were not needed in the end. Hmmm, I guess they have learnt their lesson, fame is not neccessarily popularity. Even Shiloh’s issue was much more successful when you consider sales to money paid to Brange. Imagine, only less by 400k yet cheaper by a cool 11mln. If their PR was not into overdrive, this story would have read ‘ Brangelina twin pictures flop’. We therefore should give the kudos to their over active PR machine.

  40. Mairead says:

Lola love – would you please get the term right it’s site crash not crush.

And just two tiny weensy little things wrong with your logic there. ( I know you won’t pay a blind bit of notice – but no harm in giving everyone else an alternative)

1 – who knows if they expected it to beat the Sept. 11th or Diana mags. I bet they blooming didn’t though. Only the editor can answer that question.

I know that you’re always always always right, but perhaps you can write to the editors and Getty pictures and tell them what they should be thinking too? because they’re obviously too stupid to get through the day without your rightness steering their companies to greatness.

2 – you’ve forgotten that not all of the magazine’s revenue comes from sales alone. There’s the little matter of advertising to consider.

As I said before, I’ve no idea how it affected advertising sales for those issues (Hello had sold out when I got around to trying to buy it on the Tuesday/Wednesday after, but I’d say it would have spiked interest.

And silly silly advertisers who didn’t try to cash in – an extra 2.6 million customers (a large proportion of which will probably share the magazine around with family and friends – not to mention those destined for doctors and dentists surgeries) is not to be sniffed at.

  41. Lola says:

Thanks for the correction Mairead. Crash.

    http://coverawards.com/2008/08/11/news_people_brad_pitt_angelina_jolie_twins_cover_38712/

Whichever way you spin it, lets face it, the mere fact that Shiloh’s pictures were 11million less and sold only 400k issues less says a lot. With all the hype that the tried to create around the twins. I, like people magazine I guess expected more sales if not the highest grossing issue ever.

The fact that they are releasing these numbers and trying to put a positive spin on it should tell you something.

    http://www.thejay.com/2008/08/12/pitt-jolie-people-magazine-cover-failure/

  42. Mairead says:

No probs Lola – sorry to be so nitpicky, but some things are just like nails on a blackboard to me; it gives me an irrational tic 😳

The second link you give I’m not that interested in – it’s just a blogger moaning on about stuff that happened after the deal was made and an even more random “Go Team Aniston”.

The first link is more interesting – but we do have to remember that the writer says it’s a source exclusive to them. Which could be a euphamism for talking through their backside as it’s a far cry from the old journalistic standard of two independant verifiable sources.

Dagnabbit Lola even you could be the source there (in which case maybe you do work for those magazines/ Getty Images – in that case the first blogger is right, you muffed the People cover).

It’s an interesting point that Shiloh’s was less expensive and only had a half-million fewer sales.

But again I have two things I’d like to add – this one is the highest selling “good news story” People has – the others were real zeitgeist moments, which is why they sold more.

Online viewing of gossip and spread of images has become even more prevalent in the past two years which is having a noted effect on gossip-based print media. The Top 3 sold before or at the start of the trend, so perhaps 4 million is really the limit?

Huge loss for Time Inc and Getty Images – Debatable
Shrewd negotation on part of Brangelina – undoubtedly. πŸ˜‰
