Sarah Jessica Parker thinks “there’s one more story left” in the SATC franchise

fp_6778840_parker_jessicasarah_aar_10_12

These are photos of Sarah Jessica Parker in NYC yesterday, filming that romantic comedy she’s doing with Pierce Brosnan. In some of the shots, she’s fake-crying. At least, I hope that’s her “rom-com fake cry” because if that’s really her emoting… well… yikes. Anyway, I think I mentioned this a couple of months ago, but I finally got around to watching Sex and the City 2. I have to say, I actually enjoyed it much more than the first one. The first movie was just Carrie whining and acting like an a–hole for two and a half hours. While SATC 2 had huge, gigantic problems (like racism, narcissism, ugly Americanism), at least the pace was quick and I actually laughed at a few parts. Coming out of the film, though, I had one thought: “Well, they did it. They finally killed it. A once beloved franchise is now dead.” Not so fast! SJP was just interviewed by the LAT, and she thinks there’s “one more story to tell.” UGH. Just burn it with fire, SJP.

The prospects for another “Sex and the City” movie have been in question ever since the diminished box-office dollars and lukewarm reviews for “Sex and the City 2” began coming in last spring. But Sarah Jessica Parker, who produced as well as starred in the two Michael Patrick King creations, said this week she’s not willing to give up on the franchise just yet.

“I would go back,” said Parker, speaking to 24 Frames on the New York set of her new movie, the working-woman comedy “I Don’t Know How She Does It.” “I think http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/02/sex-and-the-city-3-satc-carrie-bradshaw-blake-lively-sarah-jessica-parker.html. I know there is.”

The second “SATC” ended with Parker’s Carrie Preston and Chris Noth’s Mr. Big reconciling their marriage differences after said nuptials faced a threat from Carrie’s former beau Aidan. Over six TV seasons and two movies, however, there have been no children (yet) for the former Miss Bradshaw, something that a third film could explore.

But Parker, taking on her biggest film role with “I Don’t Know How She Does It” — in which she stars in pretty much every scene — said she may not be interesting in reprising her iconic role at this point in her career.

“I’d definitely tell that [third] story, and I know Michael would do it right. But maybe not now. Maybe in five years, you know?” she said.

Parker explained that the impulse to wait came from a desire to feel challenged in her work.

“It’s not that I want to get away from [SATC]. In a million years, who could get away from it?” she said. It’s just that “if I’m not scared again that’s not good for me. That’s literally no good for me. If I’m not terrified and nauseous and worried the first two weeks of production, then what’s going to happen? You could wither on the vine. It’s like if you can’t use your leg. It just atrophies.”

Some reports have said that a new movie would, in the manner of so many Hollywood franchises, take the shape of a prequel, with Blake Lively taking on the role of a young Carrie Bradshaw. (Candace Bushnell is set to publish “Summer and the City,” about a 19-year-old Carrie’s move to New York that said movie would be based on.) Parker said she was pretty taken aback by those reports.

“I was like, Wha-a-a-a-t?’ ” the actress said. She said she wasn’t opposed to the idea of a “Sex and the City”-type story with twentysomethings — she just didn’t feel it should feature specifically SATC characters, especially since both the TV series and the movies explained some of those characters’ backstories.

“There are a lot of important and interesting stories that 21-year-olds can tell,” Parker said. “I don’t begrudge any 21-year-old the opportunity to tell their stories. They prove to us on an everyday basis that they’re interesting. Even their narcissism is interesting. Even their inertia is interesting. Even their tonal speech patterns are interesting.

“But I don’t think we can pretend to go back,” she continued. “It’s creating two histories. It’s like, ‘Oh I didn’t know that about Carrie Bradshaw.’ “

[From The Los Angeles Times]

Okay, that interview was kind of hilarious. At first SJP is all “I love SATC, I would never run away from it, we’ll totally do another movie” and then the dark side rises and she starts talking about feeling atrophied. Also, I find this to be hilariously bitchy: “I don’t begrudge any 21-year-old the opportunity to tell their stories. They prove to us on an everyday basis that they’re interesting. Even their narcissism is interesting. Even their inertia is interesting. Even their tonal speech patterns are interesting.” LMAO. That’s her polite way of saying “These young, lazy, vapid, narcissistic whores have a place in society too. I‘m hip, I swear.”

Racism? Lol, I thought they showed how people in the Middle-East are just like us….with some minute cultural differences. Keeps things fun and interesting. Love cultural differences. The second one was great and the first one was way too depressing. It’s like the writers forgot how to write for Sex in the City. Sex in the City has been sad, but turning a guy we thought was decent into a adulterer?!?! Really? This is great…Pierce and Sarah…I think they are both great. Sarah is such a doll! Love her to death.

  2. almond says:

She looks exactly like my future mother-in-law and I honestly don’t know if I mean that as a compliment and for whom.

But that franchise is dead; let it rest with what little dignity it has left.

  3. liz says:

Haha, I think “Even their tonal speech patterns are interesting.” – might be a jab at the rumor that Blake Lively was being approached to play a young Carrie Bradshaw in a set of this movie series. Eh, I may be over-reaching.

  4. Cruisin Through says:

Ubless they’re all moving into the nursing home, they ought to leave it be.

  5. renai(jrt) says:

SATC 2 was so bad that they (SJP and et al) killed what was once my favorite series:(

SATC 1 was Bravo and true to the series

  6. daisydoodle says:

I swear if Carrie and Big have a baby in the 3rd movie, I’ll barf…hell will have definitely froze over! Is that the story she wants to tell?

  7. tiki says:

final installment of satc to be titled–
    seniors at the center

  8. brin says:

Sounds like SJP is holding on very tightly to SATC with her long bony hands. Watch out, Blake!

  9. mln76 says:

SATC 1 was crappy I didn’t even bother with the second. I think the premise of that movie that she would ever forgive BIG after what he did defeated the point of the whole series. Just let sleeping dogs lie and make your shitty Rom-Coms SJP.

  10. Anastasia says:

Anastasia thinks the entire STC franchise needs to go away forever.

  11. renai(jrt) says:

I do agree with SJP that if Candice Bushnell puts out her greedy young prequel it would be horrible…

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

egad, those pics really show how poorly she’s aged. I can’t see her as a female lead in a rom com. seriously, what straight man would find that attractive?!

  13. renai(jrt) says:

    mln76

SATC1 was very well written and if you were a fan of the series from season one through the last episode you would know that Carrie would have easily forgiven Big for doing what he did… it came together and made sense and the storyline with Miranda was done equally as well…. Also, Jennifer Hudson’s character was pivotal and really brought what was modern to the show…

  14. Jackson says:

Ahahaha!!! I am not a SJP fan but that back-handed compliment to the 21-year-olds of the world was actually funny.

  15. Hautie says:

    SJP is not aging well.

If she stop trying to desperately hold on to being 25 and do her dang roots! she would look better.

But SJP really does think she is a trend setter and wears awful clothes.

She easily could be so cute if she would stop with the harsh looking styling. Go back to blonde and her natural curls.

    And eat a dang sandwich.

SJP has depleted her face of all softness and that nose just looks harsh. She should have chose her face over her ass. And kept those last ten pounds on her frame.

And I bet she did sh*t when she heard a very tall, young and thin Blake Lively would be used as the earlier “Carrie”.

  16. renai(jrt) says:

I think she looks fine in the pics… yes she is an aging woman and yes she is about 10lbs too thin, but considering her profession I see why she feels the need to stay thin. I do think since she was Carrie for so long that they style is a habit for her now.

  17. StraightfromA says:

Fact of the matter is all of us ladies who loved SITC have gotten older. We’re by and large not out trolling for dong or suffering the constant emotional roller coaster that brings. This generation is into crap like Gossip Girl (which I can’t even bring myself to watch cause at 31+ its just not where my head is at). As these women get older and their affluence grows greater in the storyline they move further and further away from most of our realities- which means her target audience is defecting faster than an Iraqi National Guardsmen. Sorry SJP. That ship has sailed. Let it go gently into the night and retain some dignity.

By the way rail thin looks horrible on aging women. They need fat in their faces to look youthful. Please gain some weight and get rid of that obnoxious dye job. Trashy is for tarts. Classy is for dames. Own it!

  18. Raven Sparrow says:

@renai(jrt) I totally agree with you on that last statement about SATC 1. I loved the series and I thought that that first movie was a perfect “movie tone” following the end of the series. It was a real movie on its own.

I loved SATC 2 just because it brought back the “lightness” tone of the series into a movie. But it felt more like watching a few episodes one after the other. Still that part where they snatch Samantha’s bag at the market and all her stuff and condoms are on the ground and the men are staring in shock and she goes crazy…My God! Was so funny!

I also agree with SJP. I don’t want to see a movie about Carrie and the girls when they were younger and have other actors play their role. It would ruin it for me because these ladies are what made SATC. Changing their faces would just ruin it. And to be honest, I don’t really want them to make a third movie, but I was kind of disappointed not having Carrie pregnant or with kids in the last one. Seeing how she would have handled that ..Etc

  19. Laura says:

The first SATC movie was so terrible I didn’t even think about watching the second one. It was like they took the dead corpse of the show and stomped all over it.

And SJP looks terrible in those last pics, but at least she’s not botoxing the hell out of her face or dyeing her gray roots. Props for that!

  20. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    please go away!

  21. mia girl says:

That coat she’s wearing is BAD!

Maybe her character in this latest movie is the opposite of Carrie Bradshaw in terms of style.

  22. Raven Sparrow says:

I might have said it before but I’ll say it again, I really like her because I think she’s really honest when she talks and I love how she’s aging even though I know she’s not the most beautiful actress out there but at least she’s all natural. She didn’t do anything to her face, she hasn’t tried to change her nose and she isn’t trying to hide her wrinkles or the puffy bags under her eyes. And just for that, I have a lot of respect.

  23. Johanna says:

I used to be the biggest SATC fan & I dare say that I actually enjoyed the movie but then they got greedy & decided to make a sequel. Part two was beyond ridiculous that they should have put out an apology to anyone who wasted their money on that trash. I used to love the Carrie Bradshaw character & now that I started catching up on the TBS reruns I asks myself, “why”? She wasn’t even as fashion forward as they would have had us believe, she would constantly turn the subject back to her, she was over the top in all her relationships. How did I ever get sucked into this crap?

  24. devilgirl says:

NO, trust me Sarah, there ISN’T!

  25. Emma says:

There’s aging and then there’s haggard. You can be wrinkled or botox-free and still look well-rested. She just looks exhausted (no fault, bc she works a lot)..just needs to slow down a little and get some sleep.

  26. I Choose Me says:

@ Praise Saint Angie. I’m tempted to agree but my husband assures me (his comment about feedbags aside) that unfortunate looking or not, many men would have no problem hitting that. As long a woman’s willing and treats a man well(bonus points for cooking skills and sexing skills)it’s all good.

  27. Praise St. Angie! says:

“many men would have no problem hitting that.”

yeah, but what do THEY look like? 😉

  28. Camille says:

SATC needs to die already. For me it died with that awful 1st film. I haven’t seen the 2nd one yet, but I keep threatening my hubby with watching it. 😉

SJP came off as a bit of a passive aggressive bitch there didn’t she lol. And lordy girl is looking older than her age there, eat a cheeseburger girl!

I agree with @Praise St. Angie! I think her time in rom-coms is seriously over.

  29. TG says:

Soapdish- Are you referring to Steve as the adulterer? I actually really liked his part and the scene of them getting back together is my favorite in the entire movie and I will watch that part over and over. I thought it was very realistic and Miranda has always been suck a harda** so it would be hard for him to talk to her about their problems. I think many couples don’t take the other one seriously about their need for sex until that person cheats. So they have few options you can’t force someone into therapy with you and you might not be ready for the big D so you cheat instead and then feel guilty as hell afterwards and hopefully you both learn from it like Miranda and Steve did!

I also agree with @ renai(jrt) about the movie being well written. I love the first one. I will have to watch the second one over since I hated it but everyone else seems to prefer it so maybe I will like it a second time.

And Carrie’s clothes were so stupid in the series. I always liked some things she wore but then she would wear something really 80’s and dumb and to this day they still look dumb at least to me they do.

  30. photo jojo says:

In five years she’ll do a movie about having kids with Big? Oh, PLEASE, let me pay $10 of my hard earned money to watch 2 1/2 hours of overly wealthy yuppies try to conceive after putting it off until a mid life crisis hits! THEN they want babies. NOT children, just babies. And overpriced baby gear. Oh yes, let the product placement commence. And someone, please, fetch a dead horse!

  31. bored says:

I could watch another… if they skipped the exotic location, where the story died a slow cringing death.

  32. Meanchick says:

Um, one more? With who? Their grandchildren?

  33. Kiska says:

They definitely jumped the shark with the last SATC movie. I say let sleeping dogs lie!

  34. Kim says:

Blake Lively playing a young Carrie??? BLASPHEMY!!!! Talk about killing the franchise!

  35. Kim says:

I love SATC BUT in 5 years Carrie and Big will be WAYYYY to old to have a baby. It should have ended with film #1 OR Carrie and Big having baby in film #2.

  36. Kim says:

Hautie – its called aging naturally and gracefully not pumped full of botox and fillers. Blake Lively has already tweaked her face and body and she is what 20 yrs old. So we’ll never know what she’d look naturally at SJP’s age, like SJP.

  37. melinda says:

I liked the second one more. The first one was soooo depressing. It was all about Carrie. The older I get the more irritating and self-centered I find her. I don’t think a third is a good idea. At least SJP would be too old to get pregnant. That would completely kill the whole thing for me.

  38. Heatherrr says:

Let’s not beat a dead horse.

    I mean, the franchise.

  39. KateNonymous says:

    Worst. Baliage. Ever.

  40. luls says:

ok im 21 and thought her last bit about 21 year olds, was such a passive aggressive insult!! it may fit the description of young american bimbos that SHES exposed to in hollywood on a daily basis, but it sure as hec isnt fair to generalize all 21 year olds that way!

Also… “narcissism, inertia and tonal speech patterns” are NOT exclusive to the young! 😉 Umm helloo? JENNIFER ANISTON anyone?! 😛

  41. Feebee says:

I think she’s the only one who thinks that.

Then again they haven’t killed anyone off. Maybe she’s eyeing up Samantha.

  42. launicaangelina says:

i like SJP and the Sex Series. Saw first movie and hope to catch second one.

people should stop ragging on her looks. we knock ’em if they have surgery; then, we knock them if they don’t.

i prefer SJP keeping it natural than Kim K effin herself up with all the surgery.

  43. Ally says:

“…and I know Michael [Patrick King] would do it right.”

Based on what?!? The fact that the longer he dominated the writing/producing of the show, the more of an infantile, clown-dressing narcissist Carrie became?

Based on his ‘work’, I think MPK despises his women characters and the women in the SATC audience.

  44. Louise says:

I loved the 1st movie. I didn’t watch the 2nd because even huge fans hated it. I will probably the dvd eventually. I fell back in love with the series since reruns are on E!. I think SJP wants to do a 3rd so that the series could end on a good note since the 2nd was a disaster.

  45. Jenna Zine says:

I’d love to see one more SATC movie! Rumor has it that they always planned it to be a trilogy and I think they’ve got the right to make it so. Granted, I wasn’t wild about SATC 2 – but I love the characters and I’ll always want to see more. I think it’s terribly unfair that male-driven crap like Transformers and Iron Man get sequels, while “the girls” get shelved for a stumble. It was a helluva a great run and they’ve got my loyalty.

That said, if they do a prequel and cast Blake Lively I will punch someone!

  46. tacwr says:

i don’t get the hate for SJP. i just finished watching the second satc-movie and i have to say that it is way better than the first. the writers concentrated on what made the series so great: the relationship between carrie and big. no matter how old they are, these two have really great chemistry. i also don’t get why people are constantly bashing sjp for ageing so badly. ageing doesn’t look good in general but at least she owns up to it (for the most part). i’m with her that carrie and big have another story to tell. these two basically matured together and made all relationship-mistakes imaginable together- so why not?

  47. Shay says:

She knows that she is limited in her acting ability.

  48. Diane says:

Oh, geez, another one?? Wasn’t the last one embarrassing enough for these women?? What are they gonna do for the next one…join the Piece Corps?

  49. KateNonymous says:

I was a fan of the series. I thought the first movie was boring. I didn’t watch the second one because it sounded awful (I probably will watch it when it comes on HBO at some point.) A third movie just seems like they’re going after the cash, not real story-telling.

I loved the first Iron Man, and liked parts of the second–I certainly wouldn’t describe them as “crap.” Now, Transformers, sure. That’s crap.

  50. Isa says:

No! As I was selling two bottles of SJP’s perfume today (buy one get one free) I thought to myself, “Thank goodness they’re not going to make another movie.” The last one was horrible.
Also, that perfume seems aimed at women in their 20s since it’s pretty fruity.
The first one I did’t mind so much but basically I’m tired of them not having Sex in the City. In both of the movies they left New York and I understand that it’s hard to shoot there, but that’s one of the reasons why they should stop!

Also, I found the scene in SATC2 where Samantha gets arrested horribly offensive. She couldn’t have been more discrete???

Carrie and Big do not need to have babies. They stated in the last movie they didn’t want them. It should be left at that.

  51. geekylove says:

    @ Johanna
Totally agree;as someone who started watching around season two at 17, i felt EVERYTHING you described.especially the “WHY” part.

  52. sammib says:

I agree with Melinda – the older you get the more annoying she becomes…

  53. TG says:

I’ve said it before I think SJP is pretty and I like horse faces it is a different kind of beauty than the bland blake livey’s of hollywood.

  54. lucy2 says:

One more story? One more paycheck, more likely.

  55. JenJen says:

I agree with #22. I have seen every episode at least twice and thought it was great, back in the day. Now when I watch it I think what a neurotic, whiny, drama queen.

I have no interest in seeing Blake Lively in anything, she is so boring. A few flash back fashions from the 80’s were fun in the movie, just leave it at that. Carrie can’t even handle having a man, a child would be a disaster. Playing dress up would get old fast and she’d be running away from a baby to analyze her feelings and that wouldn’t be cute. Agreed, let it go with dignity.

  56. alexandra says:

Oh my gowd!! I thought it was only me about finding Carrie such a drama queen. I used to and still do love the series. Although, now I find it so full of drama. Aidan poor Aidan, men, Carrie treated Aidan like sh*t. I felt so much nostalgia for the original series after watching that dog sh*t of a movie. What would they call the SATC3? Menopause and the city, Seniors And The City 3.

  57. saucy says:

the series really was lovely, with a great premise. the movies are nothing but one big commercial.

  58. RHONYC says:

    *Paging Matthew Broderick…Paging Matthew Broderick*

Matthew darling, please speak to your wife.

throw out the fishing line and reel her THE F*CK back in and please…PUH-LEEEZE explain to her that even you, the ‘eternally youthful, peter pan-syndromed’ iconically, forever known as ‘Ferris Bueller’, even you…yes you, had to eventually deal with age. you are no longer forever young. *tears*

please Ferris…i mean Matthew, we ALL are begging you.

for the love of god, i loved me some samantha, but i don’t wanna see her wet her lips over another man’s crotch…E-V-E-R!!!

    *susan powter’s voice*

    STOOOOOP THE INSANITY!!!

    🙁

  59. nicki says:

I too will barf if they do a third movie which winds up with Carrie and Big having a baby – I could totally see it happening, though. I mean, obviously that is the only way a series about women could end happily – fulfilling her as a woman etc. (Bloody hell!).
I also think she really needs to do her roots too. These pictures are horrible! I actually don’t mind SJP, and good for her not going doing the plastic surgery road – at least we can see it is still her – but there is no excuse for hair that looks like that! It’s not like she can’t afford to go to the hairdresser, and she is filming a movie for goodness sake – could at least try and make it look nice!

  60. Jayna says:

Come back in five years? LOL No. I’m sorry, to see how much they had aged would not be fun. I would rather remember them the way I did in the HBO show. Jessica was so adorable. She’s not aging well. She needs to gain a little weight in her face. If they don’t do another one quick it will be too late and maybe they shouldn’t anyway. She doesn’t understand we don’t want to see them in five years.

  61. Kristen says:

Is anyone going to point out that SJP looks way too old to have a baby now, let alone in five years? That would be a completely unbelievable storyline.

They shouldn’t have even done the first movie, I completely regret seeing it, and I never bothered with the second one.

  62. picopink says:

wow..she is really looking rough in these pics. I guess the smoking has really aged her. Those SATC characters are so hackneyed and played out, as well as out of style. With all of the awareness of aids, do we really need another movie about people who randomly sleep around at the drop of a hat?

  63. Str8Shooter says:

3rd film? Sure…I can see the title:

    Sex and the Cemetery

  64. Crash2GO2 says:

I’ll agree that she is too thin, and some weight in her face would help her look. But I think the biggest thing people are seeing here, and not liking are the creases caused by normal facial expressions. As in those performed by a face that is not botoxed to within an inch of its life.

I think she looks fine. She’s just getting older. It will happen to you too.

  65. kar says:

at least she hasn’t gotten botox, obviously

  66. MK says:

News flash, ya’ll: in the photos SJP is PLAYING A CHARACTER. She is therefore STYLED AND DRESSED AS THE CHARACTER. And if “I Don’t KNow How She Does It” the movie is based on the book of the same name, then the character is supposed to be a middle-aged, tired, harassed working mother under pressure at her job, with her family and with a friend seriously ill. So she is purposely styled the way she is, obviously. Why can’t people get off snarking on the looks of a woman who is no longer 25. Idiotic waste of time.

  67. Joanne says:

SATC died for me way before the second film. It died in the last season. The final stake through the heart was Miranda – of all people – telling Big to ‘go get our girl’.
A tale of independent women in the first two-three seasons, SATC morphed into a tale of women who were dependent on men and obsessed with shopping. Sad, really.

  68. Crash2GO2 says:

@MK: Good observation! I admit I tend to forget that myself.

  69. Softwear says:

I swear to god I thought C. Bushnell was dead. Am I crazy? Didn’t she die?? I must be crazy. I think I need a nap.

  70. LT says:

I had no opinion on the first SATC when I saw it, but now don’t mind it.

The second one however…OH BROTHER. I literally started laughing at the end when “True Colors” started playing. There was no plot whatsoever! “Four Old Whores Go to the Desert” would have been the more appropriate title. Or as my sister says, “Four Entitled Bitches Go to the Middle East”
