Did Leonardo DiCaprio start a bitch-fight with Clint Eastwood?

wenn3202886

Currently, Leonardo DiCaprio is filming the J. Edgar bio-pic with director Clint Eastwood. I’ve been hearing various stuff about the filming, mostly controlled leaks about potential plotlines and that kind of stuff, but I hadn’t heard anything about tempers flaring. Until now! The National Enquirer’s gossip guy Mike Walker claims that Clint and Leo got into a little tiff while filming in Washington, D.C. one day. Clint, a famously reserved and fast director, got the take he was looking for and called it a day. Leo did not agree, and pitched a fit. I mean… you know Clint has turds bigger than Leo, right?

FEELIN’ LUCKY, PUNK?… WELL, ARE YOU? You coulda heard a pin drop when LEONARDO DICAPRIO suddenly got feisty with Oscar-winning director CLINT EASTWOOD on the set of “J. Edgar” and demanded a retake on a scene where he reacts to a bomb explosion on a Washington, D.C., street.

Clint loved the take, called it a wrap and told everyone to go home – but Leo felt he hadn’t looked shocked enough in the scene, and insisted on a redo.

“No,” said Clint, “I’m happy with it.”

Said My On-Set Spy: “Leo got upset and demanded that Clint reshoot the scene. Stunned by Leo’s challenging manner, everyone got real quiet. Then Clint turned to the cameraman and said, in a quiet Dirty Harry rasp: ‘He can shoot it again – but make sure there’s no film in the camera.’”

Instantly, Leo lost his temper, screamed: “FORGET IT!” – and stormed off the set. Shooting resumed the next day, but sources say the air’s thick with tension.

[From The National Enquirer, print and online editions]

Seriously, don’t mess with Clint. He’ll cut a bitch, and has, often. The only thing that makes me not believe this story is that Clint is supposed to be one of the greatest directors of actors. Actors love him. They worship him. It’s always a love affair between Clint the director and his cast. But… I’ll tenuously believe this story because although Leo fronts like he’s the King of Hollywood, he still has moments where he’s a punk.

NOOOO i dont want to believe this i love both of these people. Ergo, they must get along!

  2. Oi says:

team Clint, if true. I’m not all that impressed with Leo as an actor. He’s good, at times very good, but still has some way to go. suck it up Leo.

  3. Andrea says:

‘He can shoot it again – but make sure there’s no film in the camera.’”

That is hilarious. You don’t f*ck with Clint Eastwood, he’s a legend. Leo needs to cut the crap!

  4. Praise St. Angie! says:

    Team Clint…always and forever.

I mean, I love me some Leo, he’s a great actor and all…

but if it’s one or the other, it’ll ALWAYS be Mr. Eastwood.

“A man’s got to know his limitations.”

  5. Maritza says:

If Clint Eastwood said he was fine with the shoot then you don’t contradict him, the man knows what he’s doing. Leonardo should respect the director’s opinion.

  6. mln76 says:

I believe it only because that is Eastwood’s directing style very few takes onto the next scene. It’s not smart of Leo to alienate Clint. He is a true legend.

  7. silken_floss says:

Leo better pipe down. Dirty Harry knows what he’s doing. Clint is the director, he gets the final say

  8. brin says:

Clint was a Hollywood legend before little Leo was on “Growing Pains”. Please Leo, you are making a fool of yourself.

  9. kas says:

He looks pretty damn shocked in that first picture.

  10. elaine says:

    @Andrea –

Yeah. Do NOT f*** with Clint. His response, though? Vintage Eastwood. He was like this when he was really young, on the set of Rawhide.

There’s gotta be a stronger word than “cool” to describe him. Badassissimo, maybe?

  11. JM says:

@ Brin: I concur and add Clint was a legend before Leo was even born! Not classy at all Punk!

  12. RHONYC says:

dammit if i don’t think that ol’ tiger still got the goods.

    hmm, mmm, mmm! 😉

  13. Venus says:

Team Clint — without a doubt. I actually think Leo is a very good actor (surprisingly good actor actually because I thought he was way over-praised in the beginning of his career but has really “grown into” that praise) but no one, and I mean NO ONE, messes with THE Clint Eastwood & gets away with it. The man is beyond “legend” and Leo would do well to remember that.

  14. ctkat1 says:

Nobody messes with Clint, which is why he is CLINT freakin’ EASTWOOD!!!

The guy is a pretty fantastic director- if he says he’s happy with a take, you head on home for the day and believe him!

  15. aenflex says:

    where’s armie?

  16. mike says:

Clint may be a legend, but he’s yesterday’s news, whereas Leo is the king of the world right now. More importantly, a BIGGER director, one with more clout in Hollywood than that has-been Eastwood, has Leo’s back — Nolan.

As long as Nolan remains Leo’s friend, that hasbeen Clint can throw as many hissfits as he wants. Leo’s not gonna become next Megan Fox or Charlie Sheen.

  17. lb says:

I don’t believe it. Or if it happened, it was much more minor than that. As much as Clint has a reputation for being loved by his casts, Leo has a reputation for being very professional. I have never heard anyone mention him being difficult on set or thinking he’s above the director. It was probably a minor discussion blown up into the typical tabloid drama.

  18. Cha Cha Loca says:

Clint could bitch slap Leo into next week.

  19. Liana says:

also heard this story from someone on the set, but according to my friend, it was fairly low key, with Clint’s comment being tongue in cheek and Leonardo not getting all bent out of shape.

  20. Violet says:

i highly doubt there is any truth in this. neither of their reputations lend credence to this.

  21. Zelda says:

I think Clint Eastwood is a terrible director. His movies all have a sentimental, cliched, and dated feel to them.

I’d be on his side in this feud, though.

  22. Quest says:

Don’t believe this and coming from such a reliable source (the National bleh)….Right

  23. Sophie says:

wow, Leo looks really young when he’s clean shaven like that

  24. serena says:

Don’t mess with my Clint, seriously. He’ll truly cut off a bitch. He’s great even for doing so.

  25. JoJo says:

Can’t believe this at all. I met Clint in Carmel, CA in the 70s and he was just the sweetest most delightful and refined gentleman ever. So nice to everyone. Leo is just a spoiled little punk still wet behind the ears. He could learn a lesson in manliness from Clint.

  26. beth says:

ha! i’ll believe it – how true is it is another matter, but i can see these two acting up like this.

  27. Jules says:

Love them both and don’t believe the hype. Rock on you two….,

  28. Rita says:

    @Liana

Sounds like you got the straight poop. It’s good when an actor wants more from himself and I think Clint appreciates the attitude. It does make for a good story.

“Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn’t have f- with? That’s me.” (“Gran Torino”)

  29. Tiffany says:

@ Mike…Lucas Haas, is that you. Come on, you can tell me. Can’t someone have a difference of opinion and discuss it without it turning into a bitchfight Yes, and you know who does that, adults, or so I have heard. I think they were talking like two pros and then it was over.

  30. TQB says:

I believe @Liana – actors and directors get into arguments all the time. It’s part of the process. I’m sure this was a small thing that’s being made into a BFD. I was an actor for a long time, and no set I was ever on was all hunky-dory all the time. Leo’s a hard worker, he thought he could do it better.

  31. colleen says:

Don’t know if I believe this any more than any stuff on gossip sites but it’s a funny story.
Leo is a good actor in the right part but he is so very wrong for this one.

  32. ordinarygirl86 says:

Colleen I agree, Leo is wrong for this role!

I totally believe this story except for the bit about Leo dramatically screaming and stomping off like a diva. He prob got frustrated and pissed of he couldn’t do it again but I highly doubt he’d act like a whiny bitch with Clint Eastwood! I TOTALLY believe that Clint said that about letting Leo do it again but with no film! LOL

  33. Venus says:

@mike — are you serious? Clint is in the same league as Marlon Brando, James Dean, Humphrey Bogart & Marilyn Monroe as far as “icons” go — and they are NEVER “yesterday’s news” because, otherwise, they wouldn’t be considered “icons.” Leo is not (and probably never will be) in that league. (Being a good actor, which he is, is NOT the same thing as being an “icon” and Leo just doesn’t have “it” to be one).
Furthermore, the guy you are calling a “hasbeen” has 4 Best Picture/ Best Director Oscar nominations & 2 Best Picture & Best Director Oscar WINS in the last 10 years. How many Oscars does Leo have? Oh yeah, NONE. IF this story is true, Leo should shut his trap & take the advice from the guy with 4 best director/best picture Oscars.

  34. Jayna says:

Clint is known for only needing a few takes for each scene and no more, so I tend to believe this. But who knows. Most of Mike Walker’s gossip is made up.

  35. Liana says:

Leo’s a hard worker, he thought he could do it better.

    ********

I’ve seen it a lot of times; the better actors ALWAYS think there will be a better take, a perfect one, and the good directors know when to say “no, it was great, trust me.” Sometimes there’s a little back and forth, but the confident directors know what take works for them. Clint Eastwood is an economical director. He gets what he needs and moves on, never costing the production too much time and money and rarely (if ever) caving to the actor, while at the same time doing the right amount of ego stroking.

  36. jinni says:

I think Leo is a good actor, but sometimes I think he only takes Oscar bait film roles. As if, it doesn’t really matter if he’s interested in the character or storyline just that the role looks like something that will get him that award (I feel the same way about Christian Bale, but to a lesser degree). This makes him seem desperate to me.

  37. REALIST says:

    Leo-punk or egomaniac?
A thoughtful discussion over a disagreement is one thing, a temper tantrum (which is what this sounded like from Leo), entirely another…
Hasn’t he ever heard that it’s important to pay respect to one’s elders?
    Watch your back, Leo.

  38. Katherine M. says:

It would be so typical of tabloids to take one tiny true thing where no one looks bad and no one was misbehaving and blow it up and twist it into something BAAAAAD. And of course someone has to be turned into the bad guy.

And now there will always be some people who will believe this until it becomes someone’s truthiness.

  39. Mary says:

Seriously Leo is so type cast into this period genre..I wish he can do something of this time zone, modern.. broaden his acting abilities..Haven’t you guys already seen him in tweed suits a fedora hat.

  40. Rose says:

    What crap.

  41. SC says:

Clint Eastwood doesn’t know how to direct actors, and his movies would be better if he did more takes. It’s well known that he provides very little instruction to the actors, even the terrible ones. That’s why the performances in his movies are so hit-or-miss, because he relies on the actors to get it right by themselves on the first take or so. Sometimes this fails and you see performances that are hilariously bad in his movies.

  42. Nash says:

    @ kas

    LMAO!!!

  43. Meee says:

    I agree with 41.

  44. echolocate says:

I think the story is as Liana tells it, and that this was milder than it is portrayed. I don’t necessarily blame Leo if that’s the case.

Clint is going to be 81 soon. I love elderly people, but vision, hearing, etc., do tend to decline with age. If Clint does very few takes, the actors have to hope that his perception of the quality of each scene matches with reality. Is the scene good, perfect, equal to Clint’s usual standards, or is his acuity not what it used to be?

Even if Clint’s fine and dandy, can spot a ladybug from 100 yards away, hear a pin drop in the house next door, etc., a younger person (particularly one who will bear the brunt of the criticism for a bad reaction shot) might be a little nervous if Clint is satisfied too quickly.

  45. Narsa says:

Leo is just sore because Clint east wood has him wearing brown eye contacts to be j Hoover something Leo didn’t even consider when he played Howard Hughes in the Aviator .. EASTWOOD RULES Leo is being a little turd!!!

  46. Sarah Talks says:

Hmmm..Well, if this is true I don’t blame Leo. Sure the director gets credit for the film but Leo’s performance will get critiqued. On a low budget shoot or where they’re pressed for time a tantrum is no bueno. But if he knew he could act better and feels that the scene will make him look like a crap actor he has every right to ask for another take. When I’m writing a paper for class I don’t go with the first draft, most of us have the chance to improve the quality of our work before it gets seen so why shouldn’t actors if it doesn’t hurt the budget or the film’s schedule.

  47. LunaT says:

Leo needs to sit down. It’s Clint Fucking Eastwood. No messing, little boy.

  48. Dizzybenny says:

@41-Yeah your right.Unforgiven,Honky Tonk man,Bronco Billy,Outlaw Josey Wales,Bird,Play misty for me,Invictus,Million dollar baby, just to name a few, they all sucked!!the man dosent know how to direct?Oscar winner for best director and best movie of the year means nothing.Right?

  49. jay says:

Nooooo!!! Clint, your pants are getting into Fred Mertz territory. Pretty soon you’ll be saying “Get off my lawn.”

    Oh, wait…..

Seriously, Dirty Harry does not wear old man pants.Even when he actually is of a seasoned age.

And Leo? Sit yo ass down. Eastwood is, well, Eastwood. You signed up for it all.

  50. Catherine says:

    Not believing it.

  51. Solveig says:

Sounds like BS, I would believe that Leonardo is a perfecionist but I also believe that he trusts enough Clint to accept his decision on filming again on not a scene.

  52. Newbie says:

I believe Liana. If it really happened, it probably wasn’t as big a deal as it’s being made here.
I haven’t really liked Eastwood’s movies since Million Dollar Baby. But I’m a fan and I’m hoping this one will be much better. I think Leo is an absolutely underrated actor. Maybe not underrated, but he certainly hasn’t been awarded like he should. Whenever I watch him, I forget that it’s Leonardo DiCaprio. He really disappears into his characters.

  53. honeyv says:

@Newbie I totally agree with you. He definitely deserves more ..attention. and I don’t fully believe this story either. Something could’ve happened between them, but not like that, I mean, we all know how media is. It exaggerates things up.

  54. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Its a real cute story really but I dont believe it.

Having said that, the line “He can shoot it again if he likes, just make sure there is no film in the camera.” Wow, Classic Clint.. love it!!!

  55. Cletus says:

    Clint Eastwood’s movies are bad?

Sure he’s no MICHAEL BAY or anything but jeez, who can stand up to that level of genius?

  56. Majosha says:

@echocolate: My Dad is Clint’s age and is still considered a global expert in his particular field of expertise (toxicology). He works ten hour days and still publishes because, as I’m sure is the case with Clint, he loves his work and the challenges that come with it. Your mind doesn’t crumble at that age if you keep it sharp (barring any neurological afflictions, obviously). That said, it’s really touching to hear that you love the elderly. *eye roll*

  57. SC says:

I didn’t say Clint Eastwood’s movies are bad, just that some of the performances in his movies are bad because he doesn’t know how to direct actors.

But now that you mention it, he isn’t a particularly good director. In addition to the stuff I said about how he (doesn’t) direct actors, he hasn’t shown any particular talent for storytelling or visuals (and those 3 things are the basic elements of directing). Even his fans describe his directing as workman-like. That’s why you get so many mediocre movies in a row, like Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus, and Hereafter. He doesn’t know how to pick or develop scripts because of his weaknesses in storytelling.

But he has a great reputation in Hollywood, and he sometimes can use that reputation to rise above his relative lack of ability. He gets his choice of actors and scripts. If he picks the right set of actors + script, he can make a great movie. He doesn’t even need to come out of his trailer during filming.

  58. Dana M says:

I love Leo, However, I am Team Clint on this one.

  59. Norman says:

Clint’s a pro. He’s more likely to ask Leo if he was comfortable with the take and then retake if he wasn’t. The Enquirer is shit. Plain and simple. Lies and shit. Don’t get sucked in.

  60. Iggles says:

Wow, I didn’t even notice the brown eye contacts at first. It really suits him! I think Leo looks hotter with brown eyes! (weird, but yeah!)

  61. Ari says:

The enquirer piece made me laugh when Leo freaks out – I can’t even imagine it but I did lol hard

  62. bluhare says:

#57: Clint doesn’t know how to direct actors?? Ask those who have been nominated for awards and/or won (Morgan Freeman, Hilary Swank, Marcia Gay Harden, Sean Penn? and that’s all I can think of without looking it up).

Not only does he direct and sometimes star in his films, he does the music as well as he’s a noted jazz expert.

The man is amazing. Leo should shut the hell up and give the man some respect. He just might find himself up for an award.

  63. Sugar says:

I’ve seen the behind the scenes stuff of Leo (which of course makes me an expert ::roll::) and he did always seems a bit… obsessive about doing it just right.

Idk, I can see this being true, but I don’t see what the big deal is.

Personally I think he did too good of a job in the Aviator to not have OCD, maybe that’s part of it… who knows!

  64. Never mess with a man who looks that good at the age of 80.

  65. Justme says:

Really? Gran Torino was a mediocre movie? Are you serious? I had originally gone to the theatre to see that new (at the time) Jason movie, and it turned out the theatre wasn’t playing it so I ended up seeing Gran Torino instead and wasn’t disappointed in the least bit.
And yeah, as much as I love Leo, Clint could easily smash him into next week if he wanted to LOL! That is not a man who I’d wanna meet in a dark ally if he was pissed at me.

  66. Zelda says:

    @justme
    Actually I thought so.
The kids who played his neighbours were TERRIBLE actors, there was quite a lot of forced and unlikely dialogue, and the final scenes were illogical and heavy-handed.
Quite a big eye-roller for me.
I think if it hadn’t been an Eastwood film, people would have been harder on it.
