Penn Badgely really is going to play Jeff Buckley: is it worse than we thought?

wenn5528844

Last week, Hollywood Life had an “exclusive” that I just didn’t want to believe. They claimed that out of all of the young actors in Hollywood and beyond, producers had chosen Gossip Girl also-ran Penn Badgley to play the late Jeff Buckley. The role of Buckley was supposed to go to someone like James Franco, or Robert Pattinson, or my beloved Fassbender. Anyway, I thought it was just a rumor started by Penn’s publicist, but now the truth comes out, and it’s both good and bad. First, the bad: Penn is going to be playing Jeff Buckley. The good news: He won’t be playing Buckley in the artsy Jeff Buckly bio-pic that Sparkles and Franco are currently in contention for. No, Penn got the Jeff Buckley role in a film called Greetings from Tim Buckley, all about Jeff Buckley’s strained relationship with his father Tim. While I’m glad Penn wasn’t selected for the big bio-pic, I still don’t think he’s capable of pulling this off:

New York, NY (June 20, 2011) – Smuggler Films announced today Penn Badgley will star in the much anticipated film Greetings from Tim Buckley. He will play Tim Buckley’s son Jeff in the first film to be made about the musicians. There has been much speculation regarding the casting of Jeff Buckley as many of Hollywood’s hottest stars were interested in playing one of the most remarkable music artists of his generation.

Greetings from Tim Buckley was written by Dan Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel and will be directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Naked in New York).

Greetings from Tim Buckley follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.

Penn Badgley said, “To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood & mythologized as a human being… It’s something very special and sacred. I’m going to give all I can to this project.”

Patrick Milling Smith of Smuggler Films. “In its purest form this is a father and son story, a rite of passage that is made possible by a romantic journey Jeff finds himself on. We see Jeff accepting who he is to become and laying to rest the ghost of his father while ultimately finding his voice. We had been searching well over a year for an actor that can come close to Jeff’s spirit while also having the serious musical chops required to authentically tell this story. Penn’s audition blew us away and we knew we found our star.”

[From The Huffington Post]

Ugh, so who will play Tim Buckley? I guess he hasn’t been cast yet. While I think this is a great premise for a film – I’m being serious – I have very serious doubts about how Penn is going to mess this up. We’ll see, won’t we?

Imagine if we get to have a side-by-side comparison of Penn as Buckley and Robert Pattinson as Buckley. I have to say… I still don’t think Sparkles would be terrible as Buckley.

I had the pleasure to meet Jeff in 94′ while in France. The nicest person. Intelligent, smart and charismatic. We shared thoughts on different topics. Penn doesn’t strike me as bring able to put it off. Some role are beyond “acting”. Some characters need to be channeled..

  2. Luna says:

Eh, I still don’t think Sparkles could pull it off, either. They’d both mess up in different ways.

  3. machiii says:

can you imagine if he becomes famous?! blake lively would die…!ahhahaha

  4. Boromir's bytch says:

I think Tim’s story would be a lot more interesting than Jeff’s when put on film.

  5. layla says:

    blasphemy.

  6. Mimi says:

I almost choked on my Fruit Loops. Thanks so much for that Kaiser. Honestly, I think Penn Badgley playing the amazing Jeff Buckley in any film is a travesty but at least they still have the more “credible” bio-pic in the works. My hope is that James Franco will play Buckley in that film. There is just no way Sparkles can pull off the Buckley.

  7. SallyJay says:

Now don’t get me wrong I like a bit of Sparkles, he’s very pretty, and comes across as a really nice guy, smart, funny, self-deprecating. But GOSH he can’t act. I think the thought of him playing Jeff Buckley is wrong on so many levels. Agree with Mimi that James Franco could convincingly play him. He’s a bit pretentious sure but the boy can act his socks off. It might not be the travesty we’re all dreading! as for Penn….meh. He might just surprise us all. He’s inoffensive in Gossip Girl and he wasn’t too bad in Easy A (the only other thing I saw him in). He may pull it off, who knows! He sure looks like Jeff.

  8. Ally says:

I hate that movie story arc.

What do you wanna bet Sienna Miller is on the phone right now, begging for the job of inspirational gal?

  9. Gee says:

Sparkles cannot act. At lest Franco could do the role justice. I think penn might have it in him to do an ok job.

  10. Tigger says:

Bleh, Sparkles would be horrible as Buckley. Boy, is a down right bad actor. They need someone unknown for Christ’s sake.

  11. Lia says:

I like Pattinson but I don’t think he has the vocal chops for this. I think a lot of people just mimic a singer and don’t want to strengthen their head voice or improve their voice overall in fear that they won’t be able to pull of the chest voice…which shows how little they know or how limited their musicality is. Does that make sense?

I think Penn is smart and may work really hard to pull it off so it is a better choice. Rather than someone who already thinks they are a good singer (not that Rob is that guy.)

  12. Maja says:

James Franco would be much better as Jeff than Pattinson. At least Franco looks like the Buckleys (although a little bit more like Tim).

  13. Aagje says:

I actually want to be positive about this. I think Badgley really wanted this and maybe he’ll actually pull it off.

Pattinson… Eh, funny guy in interviews but the boy can’t act. At all.

And Franco would be a dreadful choice since playing Buckley would only make his ginormous ego even bigger. Can you just imagine the interviews… Ugh!

  14. mln76 says:

Can’t we just let these two rest in peace? I don’t see the point in a bio that’s going to be this poorly casted.

  15. jay says:

Sparkles certainly has the unibrow for it. But seriously, I don’t think Pattinson or Franco would be any better than Badgely

  16. Maja says:

I just wanted to add something. It’s a shame that Heath Ledger is no longer with us, he would be the best choice for Jeff…

    • yacine says:

you are so right 100%…even about Heath Ledger…IF James Franco would be much better as Jeff than Pattinson, I’m perfect for it; i can sing most of jeff’s songs and my voice is so close to his,if you hear me performing “Mojo Pin” you would think that you are leasting to jeff, but forget about it..who can hear me??!, :'( i guess it’s life…”so unfair”.
PS:i look like jeff little bit but my mother says that i am more charming and attractive than jeff.

  17. KM says:

I’d take Dan Humphrey over Sparkles, tbh.

  18. Mimi says:

Amen #16(Can’t read ur name cuz my computer is being a bitch). I thought the same thing when this film was first announced. Heath just had such a passion and vulnerability that set him so far apart from the rest. He would have been perfect for this role. I still stand behind my opinion that Franco is the best choice. I have to agree with Aagje about the interviews though lol.

  19. wemmz says:

I don’t see why you think RPatz could play Jeff Buckley – but Penn is already making you yell ?
i think you’ve knocked him down before you know !
he’s a really great actor, and tbh, i like RPatz, but i think Penn will do a better job.
    TEAM PENN BADGLEY !

  20. chris says:

Rob would make a great Jeff Buckley. This is not a good move for his career though so I hope he stays away from this project.

  21. Homer says:

    What the Dickens?!

Are you fucking serious about Edward playing Jeff? You know, I only really think these films about dead artists can work when they have been dead for over 30 years. Who’s next Elliott Smith? Let’s make a film about Heath Ledger while we’re at it. I love Jeff and I am grossed out by all this.

  22. ctkat1 says:

I want this to be a success only for the entertainment value of watching Blake Lively react to it.

Can you imagine?!? Blake is getting her latest round of bad reviews for whatever role dating Leo got her, and her ex-boyfriend, the one she left to try and get someone “higher profile” to boost her career, becomes a big successful movie star.

I don’t care at all about Penn Badgley, really, but I would love to watch this play out!

  23. SarW says:

I LOVE Penn. I think he is HAWT! lol I get that he is on a crap show (that I watch) and dated Blake, but come ON! He is so HOT!! I liked him back when he was in bad movies like “John Tucker must die”

  24. shea says:

WOW Penn clearly SCORED on this; he can get a movie on his own and a LEAD role at that while his EX still rottening on her 10 mins or less supporting roles even after banging/hooking up some big names in HW.
    So eat your heart Flakey!!!

  25. Mouse says:

Aaaaand the job goes to the lowest bidder. Shocking.

  26. April says:

I actually think Penn can pull off this role, he’s like the only one with real acting chops from that show Gossip Girl.
But I gotta say, no matter how big a success this movie turns out, Penn couldn’t possibly become as big as DiCaprio, not in some years to come, at least. But if he does becomes a very promising movie star a la Ryan Gosling, that’s already enough for Blake Lively to regret. At least if she sticks around with Penn, she wouldn’t be called a famewh@re by many, and a hot young thing is always better than some old dude I guess:D

  27. Ally says:

There’s this actor called Ben Schnetzer, who can look quite Jeff Buckley-esque from certain angles. He’s a pretty good actor, too.
    http://www.tv.com/happy-town/show/76797/viewer.html?flag=1&i=3&gri=76797&grti=101

Maybe it’s not too late to change the casting! While any Buckley biopic would be grating, it would be more effective with a non-high-profile lead.

And fergodsake, don’t let the actors sing. This is an occasion where lipsyncing is to be desired. The Buckleys’ voice (and songwriting) is what makes them memorable.

  28. normades says:

I think Penn will surprise a lot of people and be pretty amazing in this. Sparkles can’t act, Franco and FassB are too old.

@ ctkat1: Yup, right up there with all the possible drama that could ensue! Penn wins Oscar while Lively sucks it.

  29. celine3000 says:

WTF?? Give that part to James Franco did they forget about him? i mean that gossip girl guy is a shittay actor and did u see his ugly hands?

    i hate it..he doesn’t have the feeling…nope not!

  30. LouLou says:

Hmmm… I think we should cut this guy some slack after all he must have auditioned alongside many other hopefuls and won the role on his ability to convincingly play Buckley so I’m thinking he will do a good job.

I agree with everyone else however that the biopic should have someone in the lead that not only can portray Jeff correctly but also hold some resemblence…I just hope James Franco hasn’t jam packed his schedule too much so he is able to do the role. My second choice would be Ben Wishaw (Bright Star)….he’s got that sweet yet something brewing underneath character…definitely a good candidate.
