Zoe Saldana in a Balmain mullet gown: lovely, tragic or a total disaster?

Zoe Saldana was the star of the red carpet last night for the premiere of her leading turn in Colombiana. We’ve previewed the film before – I didn’t think it looked particularly good, and I’m still not really buying Zoe as the leading lady/action star that she desperately wants to be. We’ll see how Colombiana does.

For the premiere, Zoe wore a Balmain Resort 2012 mullet gown that I am having problems with. First, I’m just not big into mullet dresses (business in front, party in the back) in general. Second, this mullet dress seems to be designed to emphasize the biscuit area in particular… look at the way the skirt fabric drapes, look at the design of the skirt… Balmain created, in effect, a fabric-spotlight for Zoe’s biscuits. This is the opposite effect of “vagina drapes”. This is like a vagina valence.

My biggest problem? THE SHOES. Ladies, stop wearing these ankle booties with skirts and gowns. They are extremely unflattering with an exposed leg. They cut off the line of your leg, and add weight. That issue isn’t a huge deal with Zoe, considering how extremely slender she is, but these booties still manage to be horrible and unflattering with this fug gown. What pains me is that the gown could have been lovely with some editing – I would enjoy it if the whole dress was this gold beading, and it was a short little cocktail dress. But I have to say, Rachel Zoe did not serve Zoe Saldana well on this one.

What the hell is going on with her face? She looks like a VERY tightly pulled 80 year old.

  2. Celebitchy says:

I have very similar shoes, (that undoubtedly cost a small fraction of those shoes) and I don’t think they’re unflattering with skirts and dresses, particularly when they’re semi-open like that. I just wore them with a dress. I think that those shoes just don’t go with that fug dress, at all. She needed some simple very open single strap heels for that. Overall that look is terrible.

  3. Quest says:

At first I saw the top half of the dress and thought that it wasn’t as bad as the headline made it out to be….then I scrolled down, and yikes there it was the “Detour – Dine On My Biscuits” get-up.

Love the fabric, but hate the overall design, style, concept of the outfit. This could have been such a lovely gown, but failed.

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Zoe looks super sleepy for one. Jeez she looks medicated. Zoe, a lil smile wouldn’t kill you. Yea I think the dress is interesting but weird and not that cute, she isn’t wearing it either, she looks like it was put on her. IDK, if your gonna wear a dress that isn’t a traditional dress you need to own it…Zoe just isn’t owning it.

  5. bagladey says:

That dress is ugly and stupid-looking. Nothing here is attractive: Her face, her bony legs; and the shoes are not a match for that dress – everything’s awful.

  6. Meow Mix says:

Agree with CB about the shoes. I think with the right dress those type of shoes look great. I always get compliments from men when I wear them. The dress is just tragic.

  7. rentho says:

I like the color& her shoes….thats abt the only nice thing i can say

  8. gillie says:

No. Just…no. It’s like the worst of Dynasty threw up on her and she tried to clean herself off by ripping off the front part of her skirt.

  9. Oi says:

She looks like she’s about to barf. That’s the biggest thing for me.

  10. Kaiser says:

CB & I were just discussing the issue I have with these kinds of ankle-booties. It’s just a personal quirk of mine – I think the trend for women wearing these kind of ankle-booties with skirts and a naked leg needs to end. No matter how great your legs are, the booties cut off the line.

  11. Kaboom says:

Didn’t think I’d ever say that about Zoe but: do not want.

  12. Hanna says:

The dress is FUGLY! What the hell is she wearing and what’s up with her face? She just looks old in the face, but nice body though. A smile wouldn’t hurt, she looks mad for some reason.

  13. Sigh. says:

    ITAWY, Kais.

IMHO, very few women pull off the bootie with a skirt correctly. It widens the look of thicker legs, and blunts shorter legs because of the material across the ankle (both the Americans and Brit teams have said that on their versions of “What Not To Wear”). But, I’m also tired of *beige* shoes with everything. The look is supposed to elongate the leg, but most people wear the wrong shade.

As for Saldana, no thanks please. It’s too much going on in some places and not enough going on in others.

    Hideous

  15. Nanea says:

I don’t get people. Don’t they own mirrors? Are they so insecure that they daren’t say no to their stylists who are their employees after all, not the other way round. Don’t they have any taste at all?

  16. Eve says:

I saw the top of her dress and the cleavage and I thought it looked nice, then I scrolled down and saw the skirt/curtains? What the hell is that?

If her dress was longer and in one single pattern (I mean, if it didn’t have that white thing), it would have looked great — kinda like one Kate Hudson wore for the Oscars.

By the way, the shoes are ugly. They don’t go well with dress either.

  17. madpoe says:

yikes. the upper part kinda reminded me of Elvis Vegas days. the bottom half is a trail of TP following.

  18. Ari says:

I actually could live with the dress if it didnt have that godawful white thing hanging off it and some nice gold shoes (like very wispy ones)

    but overall FUGTASTIC

  19. Stubbylove says:

Beyond nast – she has such a smokin’ body – WTF? I friggin’ HATE mullet dresses.

  20. Micah says:

    It’s called “Try too hard”.

  21. Jazmin says:

This chick is just ugly & uninteresting as an actress. Her roles as the main character in movies are rapidly coming to an end.

  22. really says:

If anyone can get by with wearing that ugly stuff it is her, she is so slender and elegant, it just looks likes: she was rather bored when choosing her wardrobe, and oops wore that. VERY PRETTY actress, and actually can act—–amazing.

  23. weeble says:

I want to snatch that white table cloth off the dress so badly. I don’t like mullet dresses, and even as gazelle like as Zoe is, even she looks a hot mess.

  24. Cheyenne says:

From the waist up — lovely.
From the waist down — eeeewwww.

Nobody looks good in a mullet gown. Nobody.

  25. kieslwoski says:

    @Micah so agree.

I agree that this dress would have been much better as a short mini.

I do not know much about zoe, but why is there always this sadness in her face. Does anyone know if there has been any drama in her life or am I just being paranoid?

And yes I love Luc Besson but this movie just looks bad, and she is so skinny that I just cannot buy her as an action star. I think she is totally miscast in this movie, it would have been great with someone like ANgela Basset who has this fierce presence not Zoe who has no charisma or screen presence at all.

  26. Dena says:

She looks like the Grinch in the first pic.

  27. Sheigh says:

I don’t understand the sheet lay down around her hips!
    Meh…meh…meh!

  28. GirlDown says:

Ugly as sin. She should either get a stylist or fire the one she has.

  29. crtb says:

She needs to cover up those ugly skinny boney legs.

  30. miss p says:

Y’all r stupid she looks really gud nd pls stop hating it is nt healthy. I think she looks fab

  31. Mrs Harrison Ford says:

I think the dress would look much better if it didn’t have the mullet. It distracts from her smoking hot body.

  32. z says:

uhhh. this dress…well no comment… who is this designer….i don’t like this dress at all.
