Daniel Craig’s mom didn’t want him to waste his potential & become an actor

The latest, and some say greatest, James Bond almost wasn’t. Daniel Craig’s mother resisted her 16-year old’s wish to forego higher education to become an actor. When the choice between academics and drama school came along, Craig’s mother, Carol, tried to push him toward academics, and thankfully, did not get through.

Carol revealed: “It must have been hard for him. He knew I had my heart set on university for him. I knew he was clever enough to go, so giving up his A-Levels wasn’t an easy decision. I didn’t want this to be a kind of whim. I knew he had potential. I didn’t want to see it wasted.”

She added: “I knew in me heart he would make it, but as a mother you worry.”

Thank your Hollywood stars for mothers who let their children figure out their own way in life! Craig was moderately successful before becoming the sixth Bond but since taking on the role of the most famous British spy in history, Daniel has become a mega-star. Craig has taken the character in a completely different direction than the charming but campy Bond of legend and made him edgier and more intimidating.

In Quantum of Solace, which broke opening day records in the UK, the catch phrases, the “shaken and not stirred”, even the “Bond, James Bond” are gone, as is the constant bedding of any woman Bond comes across. But in its place is a more realistic portrayal of an assassin, not to mention the hottest blue eyes imaginable and one hell of a fine body in little blue swim trunks. Bond movies are only getting better from here, Daniel Craig is signed on to do at least three more.

I think he’s not a great James Bond; I’ve found the last movie very action packed and stuff, but without the essential charm of the older movies. James Bond shouldn’t be a bully, but a gentleman. πŸ‘Ώ

  2. gia says:

i am sorry, but i dont find his girlfriend attractive at all & she looks really old…i guess she is pregnant though…lucky woman!

  3. Megan says:

Wow I thought the blue eyes in the movie were fake… that’s his real eye colour!!

  4. Enonymous says:

I agree, his girlfriend is not that attractive and she is 29 years old apparently too. πŸ˜•

  5. Feebee says:

I love Daniel Craig as Bond but I do miss a little of the tongue-in-cheek humour, the gadget demonstrations and the “I’ll ‘ave her” attitude. Can’t have everything I suppose! Glad to hear we have him for 3 more films.

  6. Feebee says:

PS. I love that Satsuki isn’t your run of the mill looking girlfriend and he absolutely adores her. There is no way she’s only 29.

  7. I choose me says:

My favourite line from the first Daniel Craig Bond Movie.

Waiter asking about the martini that Bond had just ordered. “Shaken or stirred?”

Bond – “Do I look like a give a damn!”

And yeah, his body is smoking.

  8. Rosanna says:

Kudos to his mom for having allowed a teen to figure out his life. How many moms would do it? Few, considering everybody here is praising “tamed” teens…. 😈

  9. Blue says:

Pierce Brosnan was the best Bond ever, followed by Sean Connory. Craig was alright, but he wasn’t as charming as either of the other two.

He does have great eyes, though.

  10. geronimo says:

Agree with Feebee. Love Daniel’s Bond but miss the raised eyebrow, tongue-in-cheekiness of the earlier Bonds. But he’s damn easy on the eyes. *sigh*

Also, his girlfriend is lovely and he plainly adores her – which makes him even more unobtainably attractive….

  11. Mairead says:

The latest, and some say greatest, James Bond…

    One word… PIERCE!! πŸ‘Ώ ( πŸ˜‰ )

Perfectly sensible attitude by Mother Craig as far as I’m concerned – if he’s that talented he’ll and has the right look for the parts he’s aiming at, he’ll get work. Plus most British drama schools up to very recent were woeful on general education and left the less canny graduates at a disadvantage in dealing with much more worldly agents and the like.

It does my head in when people don’t value education – some people, not a million miles from me, actively discouraged their kids from going to university. Of course, they’re completely hatstand, but it’s still really disheartening for the kids.

  12. Kaiser says:

No way, Mairead. (ZOMG WAR) Craig’s a *much* better Bond than Pierce. Pierce wasn’t bad, really, it’s just that I never bought his action sequences. He could only pull off the suave martini-and-girls stuff.

Love his blue eyes. Love that he sticks with the same *normal* (non-actress, non-model) girl. Love his tight little ass. *swoon*

  13. Mairead says:

Excuse me… are you slagging TEH Remington Steele ❗
    (ZOMG you’re on!! πŸ˜† )

  14. vdantev says:

He’s a good Bond but he’s no Sean Connery, sorry girls.

  15. geronimo says:

*whispers* Mairead just likes him best cos he’s Irish. Joking!!

I’m a Pierce fan but not as Bond. Connery or Craig, that’s it for me.

  16. Kaiser says:

πŸ˜† Mairead – Daniel Craig is ZOMG MORE REALISTIC, just sayin’. Not that realism is the utmost priority, but too many sequences of Die Another Day were un-f-cking-believable, it took me out of the film.

But I get it – Pierce is one of your people. He just never made me hot. Craig, on the other hand. *fans self* I love a craggy bastard.

Edit: V, Connery was The Best. Daniel can only live up to him if he starts randomly spanking the Bond girls. πŸ™‚

  17. Mairead says:

Geronimo.. you have to admire anyone who has triumphed over the adversity of having a Navan accent πŸ˜† (for those of you who haven’t a clue what I’m on about search youtube for Tommy Tiernan or Hector TG4. if you have a clue what the second fella says, I’ll give you a lollipop).

No, I love Pierce as Bond because he was the perfect Cubby Broccoli Bond – intelligent, canny, doesn’t suffer fools gladly, but is ultimately a gentleman with a sense of humour. I think he still had a few more films left, but they wanted to go another direction so…

I liked most of Die Another Day – the start was good and Halle was excellent (right Dante πŸ˜‰ ) – but Madge was a waste of celluloid and I hated the whingy pappa’s boy back-story to the villan.

Daniel is good for the new generation Broccoli Bond, but I’m sticking to my guns on Pierce πŸ˜‰

  18. geronimo says:

πŸ˜€ Fair dues on overcoming such a handicap!

I do like him, Mairead, but authentic Bond to me is just, as others have said, craggier and rougher, and I like that it’s come full circle – torch has been passed (with a few deviations along the way) from Connery to Craig.

  19. RAN says:

Gotta go with Mairead on this one (Hey Mairead – We’re on the same side of the fence for once πŸ˜‰ ) There are very few men as beautiful as Pierce Brosnan. I would love him in diapers! (weird, I know πŸ˜† )

The Bond’s with him in them were the only ones I was interested in seeing…Sean Connery had it going on too, but I gave him up for Pierce. And…don’t get me started on Remington Steele – still brokenhearted, to this day, that the show is no longer on.

  20. Lisa says:

I love how he adores his girlfriend.

  21. Mairead says:

LOL @ RAN – that’s the power of the Pierce

Connery was excellent lads, but I prefer the firm-but-fair characterisation of Brosnan to the undercurrent of cruelty of Connery. Now I know it’s completely in line with the books – but as I said, I’m thinking of the Cubby Broccoli franchise. I love the idea of the Craig Bond is exploring how Bond becomes the way he does. It’s a lesson learnt from the Bourne franchise which, from what I could see, was supremely popular with women.

  22. Feebee says:

    1) can some one fill me in on what ZOMG means and
    2) did no-one like Roger Moore’s Bond? I was a little young for Sean so RM’s what I grew up with and loved,,, alas he seems so camp now.

  23. jmo says:

daniel craig is the best bond evva…satsuki is a beauty in her own right.

  24. Buttercup says:

Connery was the best bond in IMO, then Roger Moore and then Pierce. I can take or leave Daniel, I don’t find him attractive at all and I found the last Bond film dead boring, I’m sorry but I just don’t find watching poker games in a film exciting at all! Yawn! πŸ˜†

  25. mark says:

On the basis of his first Bond film, Craig is the best Bond ever. In fact, closer to Ian Fleming’s novels: tough, sadistic, perhaps masochistic, at times blinded by narcicisstic rage but still suave, smooth and gets the job done. Connery was the penultimate but he was able to do it over many films. Moore was insipid, Brosnan ridiculous, Dalton too stiff but George Lazenby actally did a great job in his one Bond film. Craig plays wounded but defended against it very well. A nuanced, complex and dangerous Bond. But mostly everything he says or does is believeable. We haven’t had that since the earliest 3 films. I hope he remakes them all.
