Rooney Mara in a Michael Kors mullet dress: goth perfection or try-hard fail?

Yesterday, I said I would be more than happy if Rooney Mara’s stylist gave up the “corpse bride/secretary” aesthetic and simply let Rooney own a “glamour goth” style. I believe that some shade of goth is basically the only thing that works on Rooney currently, given that she’s still pretty much in character as Lisbeth Salander, and given her extremely pale skin and whatever that Spock monstrosity is on her head.

So, is Rooney listening to me? These are photos from the Berlin premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Rooney wore this chic Michael Kors mullet dress that she comes close to pulling off. I don’t like the dress, but it sort of works on her. I’d still like to see her do something different with her hair and makeup, of course. But at least she’s not wearing a beige pile of cat sick.

I also wonder about Daniel Craig – wearing jeans for the premiere? Really, Mr. Bond? Daniel gets hooked up with some of the finest Saville Row suits out there, and he wears jeans to the premiere? He must already be over it. And why didn’t Rachel Weisz come out for this premiere? Maybe she was just looking for a free trip to Spain, and she didn’t feel like going to Berlin.

PS… Rooney has some very severe angles, doesn’t she? I’ve seen photos where she looks angelic and lovely, and then there are too many photos where she just looks like the Grinch. It’s rough.

It’s the best one out of the outfits that she’s been wearing IMO.

  2. She is so pretty when she smiles!

  3. Lol says:

Still dont like her but went to see the film and shes actually very good.

  4. Ginn says:

This Blind Item is apperently about Craig, Mara, and Weisz. If true then I feel bad for her.

Why This Movie Star Is So Glum

[CDAN] Wonder why this B list movie actress from an acting family has been looking so glum despite the biggest boost to her career ever? It could have something to do with the fact that this A++ list movie actor was having sex with her while cheating on his significant other and telling her she was everything he wanted and then he ran off and married a B list movie actress. She has not forgiven him, and refuses to talk to him unless absolutely necessary.

    • study-er says:

Well if it’s true, she got involved with someone who already had a SO. And her leading man. That doesn’t make her innocent in the matter, and it should’ve pre-warned her to what might transpire in the future with him. Hard to feel bad for her, imo.

      • Nana says:

He is still the older one, much more mature and she is very young and easy to impress, allows these older men like Fincher to control her too much.
Also she and Fincher might have a strange connection but it doesn’t have to mean it’s a sexual one since people believed for a long time he is gay. Maybe he just likes it to have a young girl who worships him and he exploites that power.

      • Tiffany says:

Your time line isn’t correct. GWTDT started filming in Oct. I believe, and his film with Rachel started filming the following December. He probably wasn’t with Rachael while filming GWTDT.

    • Esmom says:

I don’t know. I thought the rumors were that she was/is involved with Fincher? And R Weisz isn’t B list is she?

      • CG says:

Yeah, I know someone “in the industry” as they say and apparently it’s an open secret that Fincher is totally boning her. And I wouldn’t classify Rachel as B-list either! But I can still see this being true. Remember the Swedish extra who said Rooney was all “I’m better than Noomi Rapace, right? Like, seriously, tell me I’m good!” on the set, so I can see her being the sort to fall for a bunch of “you’re so special, you’re the one I want” lines from a hot piece like Daniel Craig.

      • Iggles says:

        @CG:

Word! I lost all respect for her after hearing what the Swedish extra said!

      • Tiffany says:

I wouldn’t put any faith in what the Swedish extra said. First of all, his scene with her consisted of about 1 line. Secondly, I doubt they would put extras in the same green room with the star. That just isn’t how things work. Sounds like he just wanted some attention in return for his fleeting brush with fame.

    • carrie says:

she’s busy between her “creepy” relation with Fincher, her gay life (Ted Casablanca’s Charlotte “chuck”)and now her hatred for Daniel Craig (irony)

      • Tiffany says:

How can she be “gay” AND involved with Daniel Craig and David Fincher at the same time? At the very least that would qualify her as bi, and therefore makes it less likely that she is the BV from Ted. I think he makes most of those up anyway.

    • Audrey says:

It can’t be them. The timing doesn’t work.

    • mln76 says:

The timing DOES work and I totally could see it being true. (I always reserve judgement on BIs). Daniel seems like a selfish prig. He let Satsuki down harshly and I don’t doubt he’d play around behind her back before the split.

    • Feebee says:

The alphabet’s all wrong for those 3. Craig’s A, maybe A+ but A++ is a stretch, Rachel’s an A and I doubt Rooney Mara was even a B before this.

      • iseepinkelefants says:

Uh Rachel’s not A. She might have name recognition because of her partnerships (Mendes, Aronofsky, Craig) but her movies are direct to dvd (Whistleblower, Agora). Name one hit she’s had in the last 5 years for she was the either the star or the reason it was a hit. Her top credits on IMDB are Constantine, The Fountain, and the Mummy Series, all of which are over 5 years old.

On her own she’s C-list, thanks to her connections she’s a low B.

  5. study-er says:

We need to stop giving her so much attention. But apart from that, this Lainey writeup of the translation of a swedish paper interview with locals was a good glimpse into her insecurities, like all of hollywood i guess.

    • Bria says:

I remember reading this. Made her even more annoying, which I didn’t think was possible.

But whoever has been styling her on this press tour really knows what they’re doing.

  6. SG says:

Looks great. I think she’s styling her hair very well and carries it off. I see no trauma.

These comments about her hair tire me, is she expected to wear a wig while she’s growing it out?

BTW, I think her acting was excellent in TGWTDT. Craig didn’t even try to not be British.

  7. almond says:

The dress is beautiful; it drapes very nicely and gives her a slight hourglass figure. But Rooney should consider going below the knees with the length.

  8. RocketMerry says:

People with very hard face features, i.e. sharp cheek bones and pointy chin on very thin face, usually look beautifully in movies and videos and badly in pictures. They need to find the best angle and the best facial expression and stay with it for every pic, and as soon as they change expression the photocamera won’t forgive.
Then in person they look stunning. Go figure.

    • Green_Eyes says:

Totally agree about the facial angles. My Lil sister has that same facial shape and I would kill for it! (my sis has figured out ow to look at the cameras..so not fair)!

Think as she gets more experience Rooney will find what works best for her. I can imagine her aging and possibly becoming as stunning as Audrey Hepburn was… They all have to learn from experience..Audrey wasn’t perfection w/ the clothes or press in the beginning either. It’s all about getting comfortable w/ oneself & finding what works for them. I do hate the bangs..but not her fault…we all have had haircuts we hate, give her props for not putting in a gazzillon fake extensions til they grow out…

  9. Esmom says:

I think the look is perfection. The makeup and smiles warm her up a bit, which is a refreshing switch. And I have to say, she gets the shoes right every time.

Craig, on the other hand, kinda makes my skin crawl. Ick. And now it looks like he’s gotten a hold of Tom Cruise’s shoe/boot lift maker. *shudders*

  10. mucha says:

what an ugly pair of legs! definitely below the knees lenght…

  11. ds says:

Great dress, good choice. I liked most of the things she wore during this promo. But she needs to add something edgy. Its just too boring

  12. TheOriginalKitten says:

Much improved. Definitely couldn’t see that dress on anyone else so it’s a credit to her that she could pull it off. I still find her very unattractive though.

  13. Zelda says:

I do NOT find this girl attractive in the slightest. She looks like Audrey Hepburn put through one of those photo-distortion apps.

    • MST says:

I don’t think either of them are attractive. Just thinking of these two creepy looking people screwing turns me off from sex!

  14. Sophie says:

I think she looks really good! the shoes are blah though, they need to be more fierce

  15. Ramie says:

I think she looks great. Loved her in the movie. I don’t know why everyone picks her apart.

  16. Franny says:

just yesterday I wondered what she looks like when she smiles with teeth. I now understand why she doesn’t smile like that. eek.

  17. Meg says:

do you notice how hard we are on female actors and what they wear but not male actors?
    they’re actors, not models.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I actually think Celebitchy is equally harsh on male & female celebs as far as their appearance goes. Go check out the post about Clooney and his lifts. Also, in this article Kaiser pointed out that D. Craig looks ridiculous in jeans. Part of being an actor is red carpet events and the image they portray. Hell, if image wasn’t a relevant aspect of Hollywood then the cosmetic surgery industry wouldn’t exist..

    • Erinn says:

I think some of it is also that most of the people are women, and we know more about women’s fashion than men’s.

  18. NotaBitterBetty says:

Really like the dress, very flattering on her. Not down with the headband though.

  19. I am Legend says:

Double Standard! What – nobody has anything to say about Craig’s formal up top/party on the bottom clothes and those ginormous feet?

    • Green_Eyes says:

Craig looks like he phoned it in! They shouldn’t even be allowed on the red carpet when dressed half way like that.

  20. ladybert62 says:

As you state, from some angles she is quite attractive and then from others, not so much.

That dress would be better if it was not floor length.

    Craig’s outfit is ridiculous.

I ignore blind items because they are blind and it is all just a big guessing game – and that goes for almost everything Ted Casablanca writes: I find him quite disgusting.

  21. cbear says:

she’s sooo pretty, but it’s ruined with that hair and clothes. if she wouldn’t lighten her hair color, things would gel.

  22. Anguishedcorn says:

    I think she looks lovely.

And Daniel Craig came dressed as the Joker.

  23. stephanie says:

regardless of the disastrous fashion choices, that is a very pretty woman.

  24. ShutTheGothUp says:

    What The Goth!?

Just because a person wears all black clothes and/or colours their hair black, does not a Goth make. I used to be Goth waaay back in its infancy. I am still a part of the subculture lifestyle as a Dark Wave/Industrial DJ and go-go dancer and cringe at the improperly overused term. Hey You! What The Goth Is Wrong With You? ….
And no, I am not taking condescending swipes at Kaiser. I always swap out the eff word and replace it with the gee word.

Back OT… Whose brill idea was it to give Rooney Mara that rainforest tribal haircut? No one puts Noomi Rapace in the corner!

    • ShutTheGothUp says:

For the love of all things :wumpscut: please pardon the erroneous auto correct typos. ::throws mad shade at Droid::

  25. Insatiablediva says:

First time posting but I’m a long time reader.

Everytime I see a picture of her, I think of Audrey Hepburn: dark hair, pale skin, those bangs. Really wish she and her stylist would exploit that instead of trying to make her look “edgy” and “goth.”

  26. AngelMay says:

Ugh on mullet dresses but what in orange shoes hell is Daniel Craig wearing?
I believe that blind item. Live and learn Rooney.

  27. Ron says:

There are way too many posts about this chick.

A couple of things. There is more than likely a stylist involved here, but she chooses not to listen. Judging from the way she talks to the press about anyone and everyone, that is proabably the case. She thinks she knows best.

As far as this dress goes, I like it, but it would have been better with some fishnets or a bit of a spray tan. Her legs photograph too white and it doesn;t look great. She is making rookie style mistakes. She wore a nude/black pin dot dress another night, which I have seen in person and it’s beautiful, but it does not photograph well overall and especially since she is so pale. Next thing is nipples though black fabric…she seems to be making all the rookie mistakes.

    • SEF says:

I agree with most of your comments but PLEASE, PLEASE, can we do away with spray tans and never again urge anyone to get one? The world outside Hollywood does NOT think spray tans look so hot.

  28. SEF says:

I kind of like that she always stands like her high heels are hurting. I stand like that, too, when I wear them, to try and get comfortable so I can relate. 🙂

Why do she and Craig always stand so close given they don’t really seem to like each other??!!

    • Embee says:

Exactly. If they’d had an affair that ended badly they’d likely not be all snuggled up. He looks protective of her, which is understandable.

  29. Original Chloe says:

    Blarg.

  30. Violet says:

She looks like Moe, one of the Three Stooges, except with Dumbo ears.

  31. Nev says:

    sooooooooooooooooooooooooo yawn.

  32. Lauren says:

On another site there is a blind item, which i guess refers to DC boning RM. DC looks so tense, and RM is leaning sideways toward him. RM looks pretty. Rooney’s goth-spock look + mystery boning is making her famous. Rooney is making Craig all flustered…sexual tension is in the air.

  33. whatevs says:

i just know that celebs read these blogs and stuff or have an assistant read them and let them know about what people think of them etc. now that everyone called her an entitled brat, an aloof snob etc. she is smiling warmly or posing like an innocent girl. the transformation was rather fast and drastic.

  34. Vanden says:

Looks better here, i actually love the dress on her. But words still cannot convey how much i dislike the girl

Maybe Craig decided he couldn’t be arsed to bother since he was with Rooney and not his gorgeous wife?

  35. manda says:

ok, so here’s my question: is that really her style, or is she dressing like that because lisbeth dresses like a goth? (is that the way to say it? not trying to offend!) i don’t think it suits her. I understand she’s growing out some awful short bangs, but I don’t think that prevents her from dressing in a softer style.

  36. Tabby says:

The daft thing is she would look so lovely with just a few tweaks. Put her in a nice blue or strong purple and razor cut her hair so it’s more pixie cut than Spock and she could pull off the Hepburn vibe. I can’t hate on her but it’s disappointing how nobody seems to be guiding her at the moment.

  37. chelsea says:

She looks like a YOUNG RON PAUL!

  38. sandra says:

She’s such an ass talker she probably won’t get much work in Hwood. Let’s hope, lol. NEXT!!

  39. ZenB!tch says:

Former Goth Reporting for duty…. I <3 the dress!!

That wanna be Audrey Hepburn hair is not Goth. Dita would Goth rock that dress.

A lot of other women would non-goth rock that dress. Rooney just looks silly.

  40. Gretchen says:

I wish she would just give up on trying to make her hair “standard” pretty. She got an awesome punky cut for the film, i think she should just say to hell with it, rock the read carpet with a mohawk, then leave the awkward growing out phase for after the publicity tour.

  41. queenof the superficial says:

Is pure monogamy a dying social choice these days in Hollywood (or everywhere, for that matter)? I feel so depressed, jaded and cynical after reading about all these ‘secret’ link-ups, divorces or break-ups between long time spouses/partners, and of course, about skin crawl inducing open relationships…

I thought that DC madly loves RW…but all this time he has been presumably boning this up-and-coming young actress? Ughhh

  42. Laura says:

Re: rooney’s rude declarations: new nickname: Pooney mara

  43. Jeannie says:

It’s just a Blind Item. In other words it’s made up cr*p.
