‘Avengers’ delivers record weekend, scores $200 million box office: did you see it?

Jeremy Renner Chris Evans Scarlett Johansson

As expected, The Avengers ruled the weekend at the box office, which was the only natural result for the most-anticipated film of the summer. What wasn’t expected, however, is that this movie would break the record for the all-time domestic opening weekend of all time with an estimated $200.3 three-day take. Considering that the movie’s worldwide total has now reached $641.8 million, the movie’s $220 million budget (plus all of its advertising expenses) has already easily been recouped. Part of this massive success has been due to word-of-mouth by those who saw advanced previews, for director Joss Whedon honed in on his own inner fanboy to make the film that comic junkies truly wanted to see. Whedon knows the hell out of these characters and used all of their respectives strengths, weaknesses, and neuroses to the greatest advantage. It also comes as no surprise that putting so many superheroes into one movie would best the individual efforts of Thor’s abs and Captain America’s waxed nips (plus those of Iron Man, The Hulk, Loki, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury). In this instance, the sum is greater than the whole of the parts because Avengers has not only smashed sales records but also achieved quality:

It’s been clear for a while that The Avengers would be a box office success, though few people could have foreseen this opening. The superhero team-up got off to an unprecedented $200.3 million start this weekend, which obliterates the previous all-time weekend record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 last Summer ($169.2 million).

While it fell short of setting a new opening day record (that still belongs to Potter), The Avengers was responsible for new high marks in most other major categories. It was the fastest movie ever to reach $100 million, $150 million, and $200 million, and it set new records for Saturday ($69.7 million) and Sunday ($50.1 million) grosses. It also had the highest per-theater average ever for a nationwide release with $46,057.

Through its first three days, The Avengers has already grossed more than Thor ($181 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($176.6 million) and The Incredible Hulk ($134.8 million). It’s still behind Iron Man and Iron Man 2 ($318.4 million and $312.4 million, respectively), though it should pass those movies next weekend.

The incredible opening weekend gross for The Avengers is mostly the result of a lengthy, extremely effective marketing effort which began all the way back in 2008 when Nick Fury made his first appearance after the credits in the original Iron Man. By the time Thor and Captain America opened last year, it became clear that these movies existed in equal parts to make money and to serve as advertisements for The Avengers.

The movie went on to receive strong reviews (94 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), which made anticipation reach even higher levels. It also helped that April’s releases were anemic, so The Avengers was able to play on more screens than it would have if another major movie was in the market (like when Thor had to face Fast Five last year).

The big question now is how high The Avengers can go–it will obviously hit $400 million, and with exceptional word-of-mouth (rare “A+” CinemaScore) the movie could even be in line for a $500 million total.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!

Even though I tried to avoid seeing this movie until next weekend weekend, I ended up braving the crowds and catching a Sunday matinee showing that was (inevitably) filled with a vast geek squad who were probably already on their 2nd or 3rd viewings of the movie. Overall though, The Avengers was a really great time. The dialogue was snappy (both in regard to one-liners and monologues), the plot was well thought out and contained no visible holes, and the special effects weren’t cheesy or overdone. While I wasn’t blown away by the action and didn’t enjoy the infighting (particularly the encounter between Iron Man and Thor over Loki) nearly as much as I expected to, the smart script made up for these slight shortcomings.

Now let’s talk about how well the abundant eye candy fared because, ultimately, this is a summer blockbuster and, action aside, the movie was intentionally filled to the brim with a large number of attractive, strapping actors. Between Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, I was personally well sated, and Robert Downey Jr. pulled off his usual charming a-hole in Tony Stark quite well. If one adds in Jeremy Renner’s effortless tough-guy aura as Hawkeye and the mesmerizing performance of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, then it comes as no surprise to learn that this movie pulled in an impressive 40% female audience, which is pretty amazing for a superhero movie. Even more boastworthy is that Scarlett Johansson’s contributions went well past her famous jiggle. Don’t get me wrong though, for those boobs jiggled plenty, but Scarlett also held her own (far better than she did in Iron Man 2) and didn’t embarrass herself at all.

Character development, which is a rare entity to behold in the blockbuster world, was also a major strength of The Avengers. Thor and Iron Man both had to do away with their own respective bits of snobbery (fighting alongside mortals and getting along with others, respectively) for the united cause, and the Hulk also learned to cope with his (for lack of a better descriptor) dual personality. Oddly enough, I think that last aspect was the most thrilling part of the movie for me even though I went in thinking that this incarnation of the Hulk was “fluffier” than usual and nearly as brawny as he’s previously been. I now stand corrected, for both Ruffalo and the CGI department won me over — not enough to throw away my allegance to Thor, but close. Indeed, I enjoyed this movie like I love The Dirty Dozen, and Whedon did an amazing job of integrating a bunch of mismatched parts into one impressive superhero tapestry.

Saw it! Loved it! Didn’t want to pay for 3D, but was the only way to get a decent viewing time.

    • typhoid.mary says:

IT was a glorified sausage fest…but Michael Renner made it all worth at the drive in. DIDN’T HE LOOK AMAZINGLY SEXY????? He is not particularly handsome but i’d hit him in a heartbeat!!! Yummyzz

I loved the Hulk, too, he was the funniest character of all, bitch slapping everyone, love that grouch!

  2. Gwen says:

Saw it this weekend too and also loved it. Joss can have my babies any day!

    • Aiobhan says:

Saw it on Friday and loved it. It is not as entertaining as Cabin in The Woods but I still loved it. I am so happy for Joss!

    • Maguita says:

      Best moment ever, ***SPOILER ALERT***

Loki’s “ENOUGH!!! I am a God and you are nothing but smut beneath my heal (or something to that extent)” and gets interrupted by the Hulk who simply pulls at his feet, and bounces him off the floor and around repeatedly like the Road Runner’s spring-like neck during a Wile E. Coyote stunt gone wrong.

Loved this movie. And The Hulk OWNED it’s ass!!! The best moments were with The Hulk. Most definitely worth the money spent. Highly recommend it for intense entertaining purposes.

  3. shaboo says:

saw it and it was just ok. I preferred Thor.

  4. CN says:

I saw The Five Year Engagement instead and was pleasantly surprised πŸ™‚

  5. Eve says:

Saw it, loved it, want to have its babies.

    • truthSF says:

Lol @Eve, how much did you like about the interactions between the Hulk and Odin? sons. I guess he doesn’t give a shit about them being demigods.

      • Leigh_S says:

I thought I was going to die laughing over one of the interactions between Hulk and Loki! You know which one I mean πŸ™‚

      • Eve says:

        @ TruthSF:

It’s hard to say, really. I loved everything so very much. I said here that even ScarJo was fine in The Avengers (who knew?).

But, of course, my favourite thing was Mark Ruffalo’s Banner/Hulk and the interaction between him and everybody else.

I mean, how cool is his bromance with Tony Stark/Ironman?

      • Tiffany27 says:

        @

    • Tiffany27 says:

I went to the midnight showing and people stood up and applauded at the scene between Hulk and Loki!
I LOVED the movie!!!! And DAMN I forgot just how sexy Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Capatain America (Eve’s Husband) are. Will be seeing it again soon.

      • Eve says:

Mark Ruffalo is now my husband too.

      • Tiffany27 says:

I loved it when RDJ poked at him to see if he would turn into the Hulk. I laughed my a** off!!!

      • Eve says:

That is one of my favourites!!! Not only the poking but the face Downey made cracked me up.

I see lots of threads where people mention Bruce Banner should make a cameo in the next Iron Man movie. It’d make perfect sense — and the producers must know this by now.

P.S.: We’re sure spoiling the movie for those who haven’t seen it yet, aren’t we?

      • aquarius64 says:

I loved it when the Hulk went Bamm-Bamm on Loki!! (At least Thor got back up.) If the MTV awards have a category “Best Beatdown” this gets my vote.

      • Tiffany27 says:

Also Eve you were so right about after the credits.
        I.LOST.IT.

      • Eve says:

        @ Tiffany:

Don’t worry, when I went there to watch a second time — but couldn’t because it was sold out (and I mean, practically all showings that day) — I waited outside for my friend. I was right by the door when the extra scene was playing and I saw people losing their shit too.

The Avengers is proof we need someone who genuinely loves comic books super heroes (like Whedon) to write and direct their movies.

      • Tiffany27 says:

So true. I’m already ready for the sequel πŸ™‚

    • Original Chloe says:

Haven’t seen it yet but I’ve loved Whedon since Buffy and Firefly, so I’m really happy Avengers are doing so well!

      • Eve says:

        @ Original Chloe:

Try to skip the spoilers (Bedhead should have put a “spoilers alert” on this thread — EDIT: ooops, apparently she did).

I’ll tell you only this: The Avengers has Whedon’s mark in every single scene. It’s a Whedon’s movie — with a big budget!!!

  6. Leigh_S says:

Saw it opening night and loved every minute. And the eye-candy? Fantastic!

    • mia girl says:

Eye candy is right- it really was just as much for the ladies. It was eye candy but with characters to back it up. Each guy has his unique sexy charm, including the “villan” Loki – who was giving me Fassbender vibes the whole movie.

I loved it and fell in love with Mark Ruffalo all over again!

  7. Nashville Girl says:

Loved it! Told my daughter as it started – with her daddy listening – that I was totally running away with Iron Man! He’s my favorite eye-candy.

    • Liv says:

Iron Man’s the best! πŸ™‚ I love Robert Downey Jr – wonder how much of the character resembles him πŸ˜‰

  8. Walice says:

It is a MOVING MARVEL! luv’d it

  9. Peach Dancer says:

Great movie, want to watch it again. Joss Whedon did such a great job!

  10. jen7waters says:

Saw it, loved it and one day I will marry Thor! xD

    • aquarius64 says:

You would have to get through Jane Foster first…she has him lock, stock and hammer πŸ˜‰

  11. Mia 4S says:

It was a lot funnier than I thought it would be! Great, although I would love to see a scarier villain next time (let’s face it, Loki is kind of cute). The team relationships were very well done; RDJ and Mark Ruffalo were adorable together.

    • Reece says:

Did you see the credits? THAT guy is the new villian! πŸ˜€

      • Mia 4S says:

Perfect. He had that all powerful (and no tragic childhood) vibe about him. Can’t wait.

I saw both after credit scenes…and was seriously craving a shwarma.

      • Reece says:

Me too! Been craving it for 2 days.

    • Lairen says:

Loki is the most unintimidating villain ever. Every time he transformed into his shiny outfit with horns, he was even less intimidating. I don’t know why they picked him to be the big bad guy!

      • lee says:

they had to. otherwise thor would have no plausible reason to come back to earth.

  12. Beck says:

    (sorry – dupe commment)

  13. Beck says:

Really enjoyed it. Loved the interplay between characters – they did an excellent job of retaining indiv. personalities, which made for some fun contrasts.

Wished there was more backstory on Hawkeye and Black Widow (where was their earlier film? I would’ve seen it), which made them flatter than the others.

But overall, great character rapport, lots of genuinely funny dialogue and many cheer-worthy moments – plus delicious eye candy. πŸ˜‰ I’ll definitely see it again.

  14. DeltaJuliet says:

I saw it with my son on Saturday, in IMAX 3D……we both LOVED it! The action, the humor, and oh yeah, the hot guys πŸ˜‰

I loved the scene between Hulk and Loki (also my sons favorite), I loved when Thor stuck up for his brother and then said “oh, he’s adopted”, I loved Iron Man and Thor fighting in the words……the whole movie was great. Oh, and I loved it when they were in Germany and AC/DC kicked it….I was like “Here comes Iron Man!” I want to go see it again!

Wow I sound like a total fan girl πŸ˜‰

  15. amurph says:

I saw it in Imax 3D and I loved it. I’m a big comic book fan and while it’s not 100% (are any film adaptations these days?), I was so happy with how it all played out and the character development. I loved a lot of the one liners but my favorite parts were the Hulk and his reactions to both Thor and Loki. I also was minorly in love with the gratuitous ass shots they had of Chris Evans. Joss Whedon is a great person to work with filming group dynamics – while the action shots weren’t overwhelmingly WOW, Oh My, I thought it kept a good pace and I was amazed at the CGI for the Chitauri. And Mark Ruffalo was great as Banner – he played him so twitchy and closed off but you could see he was holding back snarky comments. He definitely played the others in regards to the fear of the Hulk.

Did anyone else stay for the two credit scenes?

    • GoodCapon says:

There were TWO? i only caught the first one.

      • Eve says:

There is an extra scene (besides that mid-credits one) after all the credits for North American audiences/any country where The Avengers opened on May 4th.

  16. aquarius64 says:

Loved Hawkeye’s archery skills. They were sick; he makes Robin Hood look lame. Hawyeke vs. Katniss: who’d win?

  17. Jazz says:

Saw it, loved it, will definitely see it again!

  18. carrie says:

i saw it and i’m more so-so because i’m not a real fan of comic movies (but i love Nolan ‘s Batman movies and Captain America movie). It’s fun and it’s a cool Stark-Baner show but too long for me(2h20 to tell a so tiny story and the endless final action scene ) and too many characters underused

  19. The Original Mia says:

Loved it. Want to marry it. Definitely seeing it again this week.

  20. marybeth18 says:

Major Whedon fangirl, saw it twice (I left work early Friday to see a matinee, and then went again on Saturday with friends). The Friday crowd was mostly adult fans, and it was great. The Saturday crowd was half kids, so people didn’t know all of the backstories.

    Loved it!!!

  21. angel says:

loved it!!! but I am a huge comic fan so there is that. I think Joss Whedon did an fantastic job and made a great use of a huge cast.

I have never been a huge Scarlett Johanson fan (she is okay) but I thinks she did a good solid job in this movie. I really liked the scene with she and Loki. Plus my 9 year old now wants to be the Black Widow (“cause she kicks butt and is smart, Mom”).

My favorite was the Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. But I really loved them all. Great, fun movie.

  22. Lady Lupton says:

I’m in London so I saw it last week and again today. I loved it. For me it ended up being the Banner/Hulk show, which I totally wasn’t expecting.

  23. FreeSpiritedGirl says:

Hell yeah! It was fantastic! πŸ˜€ Much funnier than I expected. OMG! Chris Evan is so cute.

  24. GoodCapon says:

Saw it in the ‘regular’ cinema. I didn’t like some of the slapstick humor especially the ones involving Hulk and Loki and Thor.

Jeremy’s arms… ooh la la! He and Loki could have my babies anytime.

  25. clumsyme says:

I saw it and it was awesome!!!! Loved Iron Man and Ruffalo was a good Banner/Hulk. Scarlet was a good as BW she definitely kicked ass. And I now get Reners appeal. Also last Friday I saw Chris Hemsworth and Evans on the view and I have to say Hemsworth was so charming I loved watching him.

  26. Reece says:

Saw it. Loved it. Didn’t want it to be over! Took picture with Captain America afterwards. A guy came dressed and everyone stood up and clapped when he walked in!

  27. gina says:

    I LOVE Robert Downey Jr!

Hahahahahahahahahhahaha. That made my day!! Thank you.

    • Eve says:

I’ll have the ones on the far left (my husband) and right (my second husband — yes, I’m greedy). Then the delicious douchebag next to the one on the fair right a couple of times too.

      • Chatcat says:

Well I certainly don’t want any more kids but I’ll take the action! Do we get to pick more then one? And more then one at a time?????

      • Eve says:

        I don’t know…but I’d certainly try every possibility πŸ™‚ .

      • Eve says:

Just to clarify: when I said “I’ll have the ones…” I was referring to the men, not their babies (but I could have a couple of them, I guess πŸ˜› ).

    • Reece says:

      LMAO!!!
Missing Loki though πŸ™ I like ’em damaged. lol

  29. lolaluvsu2 says:

    Team Loki all the way!

  30. Lindy says:

Excited to go see it this week–mostly because I am a huuuuuge Joss Whedon fangirl geek and I am totally delighted that he has had such a big success. I’m hoping this gives his added cred to make good TV shows (that don’t get canceled right away because networks are stupid).

  31. Kiki says:

In love with The Hulk here, as well. Mark Ruffalo stole the movie! I have no idea how Universal expects us to deal with that Battlesh*t after Avengers. No way. Next weekend I’ll be going for one more round of the Avengers, for sure.

  32. TXCinderella says:

I saw it in 3D and liked it alot. My 12 year old loved it! Lots of action. Mark Ruffalo did steal the movie, he was hilarious. The other characters were great too. Robert Downey Jr. is so hot! Chris Hemsworth, very hot too.

  33. Ibogaine says:

Thanks for sharing this information. This post enlightens my knowledge.

  34. Sachi says:

Saw this in 3D with my sisters at the VIP side of the cinemas. VIP was worth paying $20 for the ticket and then another $20 for the food. You just take your reserved seat and someone comes and takes your orders and brings the food to you. Less hassle, fewer audiences, bigger seats, more fun.

I was confused about the movie at first, because I never saw any of the other previous films (Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America).

But I did like the movie overall, it was nonstop action and none of it felt too complicated so those who are not followers/readers of the comics (myself included) can still understand the movie.

RDJ’s wit and humor were on point. Very enjoyable.

Tom Hiddleston is my new favorite. πŸ˜€ Every time he showed up on screen all I could think of was that MTV interview with him cackling and saying, “Loki’d!”

Chris Evans is so…”American”, like how many men looked back in the 1940s with the chiseled, refined but still ‘soft’ features that you see in their black-and-white photos. Great casting. He is hot, too. πŸ˜€

    • ViktoryGin says:

I think I’m officially in love with him. Hiddleston is so eloquent and charming in interviews. I highly recommend watcjing more of this beautifully talented man.

  35. Denver Danni says:

I saw it a few weeks ago in 3D in Hong Kong. Loved it!! Just a fun, exciting movie. I usually leave over analyzing but it was just what an action movie should be – fun and well made.

  36. Kim says:

Joss Whedon FTW! Seriously, this movie is made out of awesome.

  37. sauvage says:

Ya, I saw it. Twice. Once on opening night and then again two days later. Loved it just as much as the first time.

My favourite oneliner came from Loki: “When are you ever not gonna fall for that?”.

  38. Maria_Spain says:

I saw it last sunday and WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW I WANT MORE!!!,all the guys were just perfect using powers and charm ,even hulk ,his fighting secuence were hilarious πŸ˜€
didnt like scarjho maybe because i dont like her at all in any rol :p

  39. some bitch says:

Saw it… and ehhhh. I’d see it again because it’s a big summertime blockbuster and that means two hours of a cold theater and easy entertainment on a hot night, but it’s not something that is likely to stay with me like The Dark Knight did. As visually impressive as it was, it also felt kind of sterile. I enjoy comic book/superhero films, but there’s been so many of them over the past five years that the genre seems to be exhausting itself.

  40. OMSS says:

IDK if I’m going to see it. I have always had an aversion towards Marvel comics and the various TV shows and movies resulting from them. I don’t know why, I’ve just always found them boring or repetitive.

Since you guys are raving about it I might see it if one my friends or younger cousins want to see it.

  41. Emma - the JP lover says:

Did I see it? Yes!! It was all kinds of awesome. πŸ™‚

And all the guys are fine as wine … but am I the only one who thinks that Loki is sex on a stick?

    • lolaluvsu2 says:

      Nope

    • ichsi says:

Yeah, everyone was going on about how hot Thor and Hawkeye are. I’d take Tom Hiddleston over them in a heartbeat. Mmmmmmh educated, smexy, blue-eyed Englishman. <3

And yes, the movie was awheeeesome!

  42. cee says:

I saw it Sunday and LOVED it, I wanna go see it again.
