Rob Pattinson worried he wasn’t right for ‘Cosmopolis’: “It gave me balls”

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson covers the latest, Cannes-themed issue of Premiere magazine, and for everyone who’s ever rooted for the guy to shed his sparkly, vampire skin, this is a photoshoot to appreciate. (WARNING: One of the shots is fairly graphic in terms of violence, so I’ve placed it below the text of this story.) The Premiere feature gears itself towards promoting Cosmopolis. Since I’m one of those annoying people who reads books once they find out a movie adaptation is in the works, I’m going to go on record saying that I’ve got no idea how even David Cronenberg will deal with the book’s controversial ending or how well it will go over in theaters. Of course, the scenarios depicted within this photoshoot are not directly lifted from the book itself but carry the same surreal feel as the project as a whole.

Like I’ve mentioned before, this movie is a huge break for Sparkles, but he seems to hold his own in the trailer. The fact that Cronenberg cast him as warped billionaire Eric Packer speaks volumes, and while I still don’t know how Rob will pull off his latest announced role as the soldier/interrogator who captured Saddam Hussein, it’s obvious that the guy is already benefiting from Cronenberg’s endorsement. In this Premiere story, Rob admits that he had a hard time believing Cronenberg really wanted him, and Rob doubted that he was good enough for the role. Now Rob says he has gained “balls” from the whole experience:

Robert Pattinson

Even hunky vampires sometimes struggle with self-confidence.

In a new interview Premiere magazine’s special Cannes-themed issue, Robert Pattinson opens up about how filming David Cronenberg’s sex-and-violence filled Cosmopolis helped give him the confidence he needed to tackle heavier roles.

“Filming Cosmopolis with David changed something in me,” the Twilight star, 25, tells the magazine. “It gave me balls.”

Prior to signing on to star in the dark drama–based on the Don DeLillo novel of the same name, about a billionaire who nearly loses everything (including his mind) in the span of one day–Pattinson admits he “spent time doubting myself. As soon as I read a script that I liked, I was working myself up, asking myself if I was good enough.”

But now?

“I tell myself: ‘F— it! If they want to hire you, go!'” the actor exclaims.

For his part, Cronenberg says he never doubted Pattinson’s leading-man abilities.

“Yes I found him interesting in Twilight . . . I saw him in Little Ashes and Remember Me, and I am convinced that he could be my Eric Packer,” the acclaimed, gritty director told Italy’s Cinerepublic last month. “It is a heavy role, he appears in each scene and I do not think I’ve ever done a movie before where the actor is always on the screen. The choice of an actor is a matter of intuition, there are no rules or instructions.”

[From Us Weekly]

I ran portions of the interview through Google Translate, and most of the text is actually Premiere talking to David Cronenberg. Interestingly enough, Cronenberg states his belief that Rob could go on to have a career like Johnny Depp. I think this sounds plausible but only “in reverse” — as in Johnny started out with amazing, cutting-edge projects but has largely devolved into a franchise robot. In contrast, Rob has been somewhat handicapped for his role as Edward Cullen yet has the potential to produce much more compelling work. It will be a struggle for Rob to ever be taken seriously by many people, but Cronenberg’s endorsement might speed up the process.

It’s strange how I find myself rooting for Rob even though he really doesn’t need the acting work. In fact, he’s made so much money playing Edward that he could immediately retire, never work another day again, and still live a life of luxury. Does anyone else slightly fear that Rob’s newfound “balls” might eventually cause him to lose his self-deprecating edge and make him less fun during interviews? I hope that never happens because at this point, loving the RPattz is just so easy to do.

Update: Vulture has more quotes, including the following gem from Rob.

“I’ve been doing movies for eight years and I’ve been criticized often and all of a sudden, this teaser is released and everyone is excited,” Pattinson laughs. “‘It looks great! His acting is good in it!’ It’s ridiculous! I’d like to ask a question to those people who think I just started acting well: What do you think I was doing in Twilight? Do they think it’s how I act naturally? No, I had to make decisions as an actor. I find it funny when I read stuff like, ‘Will Cosmopolis finally prove that he can act?’ What does that even mean?”

[From Vulture]

The man has a point, and I think he’s made some great post-Twilight choices in roles. We’ll see what happens when this movie comes out.

I can’t believe I’m excited to watch a movie starring Rober F*cking Pattinson.

Damn you, Cronenberg, damn you to hell!!!

      *cosignature placed next to comment*

Furtherfuckingmore Sparkles: They mean that the material that your career is based on and the actual execution is SO SHITTY that people want to see what you can do in a non indieish non under budgeted non shitty film with proper effects and plot etc

      • kc says:

Shitty? The material yes, the execution? No. He played Edward exactly as he was written. If he screwed that up, Twilight wouldn’t have been as big as it was and the next installments would never have been greenlit.

Don’t blame him for Stephenie Meyer’s shitty writing. Robert did the best that he could with what he was given.

Hi Eve! You know we share a love for Stefon, and in reading your comments regularly, I know we share similar opinions on a lot of things posted at CB. But, its clear from this post that a fondness for Pattinson is where we part ways. 🙂

On the bright side we both love us some Cronenberg … which is why I love these photos as homage to some of his films (Dead Ringers is one of my faves – that movie blew me away). There is a review of Cosmopolis in Premiere France and it says that old school Cronenberg is back with a vengeance. So that’s good news! It also had good things to say about Pattinson’s acting – but I’ll leave that one alone and we can confer once we both see the film.

      • Eve says:

🙂 It’s all right, girl! It would suck if we all agreed about everything, right? Also, I should warn you that we will probably disagree (more) with each other in the future, and you know why? Because I’m a blunt, stubborn bitch, that’s why. Just let me know if/when I end up being rude.

And I don’t mean anything bad about his fans (except the super crazy Twihards), I just don’t think he’s a good actor — but still slightly better than Stewart (though I know that doesn’t say much).

      • mia girl says:

Ha! I look forward to your future opinions and potential rudeness – because I know they come from a clever girl 🙂

Listen, I like him, his personality and interviews (this one is quite longer and I enjoyed it), but I’m not going to tell you the guy is a great actor. I like the look of him on a big screen and he has “something” that appeals to me (maybe it’s the British thing – I love all those British actors)… so I am more tolerant than many as he tries to prove his ability. Time will tell… but I am rooting for him.

  2. CC says:

    Can’t act. Not attractive. Next!

  3. another nina says:

Hey Bedhead – and what about the quote, used by vulture (and eonline)?
    http://www.vulture.com/2012/05/robert-pattinson-is-older-wiser-and-thicker.html

    • another nina says:

Thanks for updating the quote. I actually got sad when I read that gem of Rob yesterday…
I used to moderately dislike him as I only looked at the covers of magazines (ET was horrible) and avoided all his movies like a plague. Then after (and despite) watching and reading everything about him last February (for work), I started rooting for him. Very few actors are so interesting (as people) and have so many layers in them.
And then this quote just almost crossed out four years of smart and self-deprecating interviews. Seriously, Pattinson? Do you seriously believe that your squirming in Eclipse is acting??? Don’t even get me started.

Anyway, he has a very unusual path and it’s probably hard (if not impossible) to be young, rich, handsome and famous and still remain normal (grounded – is it a better word?). Hopefully smart Rob will be back. And that he’ll take some acting lessons.

  4. CC says:

He’s delusional if he thinks he can act. I’ve seen him in Remember Me, Little Ashes, and Water for Elephants and he’s utter garbage.

One Cronenberg movie won’t give him street cred but it will be funny watching him try to play a military interrogator hunting Saddam.

I can stand pretentiousness when actors are talented. Ryan Gosling can be very pretentious but that’s OK. He can bring it on screen.

Rob: no, just no. He’s starting to believe his own hype.

    • ok but says:

I don’t think he is believing his own hype, I think he has reached his limit of tolerating the mindless hate. The knee-jerk reaction upon hearing “Twilight”. I am surprised it took him this long to respond this way.
I don’t think he is the best actor out there, but he is decent enough. I suspect a great percentage of the “he sucks” comments out there spring from Twilight hate, not Pattinson hate. I read this interview as him saying judge me not Edward Cullen.

  5. marie says:

I’m willing to give him one more shot before I write him off completely, but he better deliver..

  6. mel says:

I’m rooting for him..he seems like a nice guy..why not give him a chance in other projects? The Twilight franchise had HORRIBLE writing…not his fault.

  7. original almond says:

There’s very little talent there, if any at all. He was mediocre at best in Remember Me and absolutely ridiculous in all the twatlights.

I have little hope that he’ll deliver anything resembling a good performance. But he’s definitely starting to believe his own hype and thus losing that self-deprecating element which made him endearing.

He’s starting to sound like a douche is what I’m saying.

    • Dani says:

He sounds like an idiot there. It’s as if he assumes people think he was playing himself. He doesn’t even register the fact that No, people just think he’s awful in those movies. That’s what they mean when they express surprise in his acting.

  8. lincoln_girl says:

I’ve seen most of his recent movies, and I think he’s really good, actually. Despite its flaws, I thought Remember Me was decent, but I thought he was great – natural, even. Yeah, the Twilight films suck, but I blame the source material. I’m rooting for him!

  9. jl says:

Im rooting for him too, if he takes acting lessons…..he can take them with his girlfriend because they are both terrible actors.

  10. Crystal says:

Love the last picture. There are times when I find him sexy and other times when he looks so busted. I wish he’d grow his hair back. If I’m willing to give K-Stew a chance to prove herself in SWATH then I might as well give this foot face a chance. I think she’s a better actress than he is an actor but that doesn’t really say much since I don’t think she has much range. I watched him in that Salvador Dali film and I was cringing so hard. He was alright in Remember Me. Twilight is hot garbage and noone did well in that except for Billy Burke. Robert needs to just admit that he was bad in it. He’s lucky he’s a man and that Hollywood is sexist as f*ck because he was 20 times worse that Kristen in Twilight but because he’s good looking and self deprecating people forget that his acting skills are about as good as Beyonce’s in Goldmember. His American accent is annoying too but at least he’s not an American attempting a British accent. That would be even more tragic. Can’t wait for Cosmopolis.

  11. Reece says:

Oh Oh! Well if Twilight was the result of your choices, Sparkles, then stop making the same GD whiny, love-sick choices in your other post-twilight movies! End of that discussion.

He cleans up so nicely. He is furry isn’t he? *snort*

  12. Dani says:

Seriously, the sole fact that you have spent years acting doesn’t mean people have to think you are good at acting.

Anyone can act, only certain people are actually skilled at it.

  13. Hanna says:

Nah, his performance so far (despite Twilight) has been pretty decent. I dont think this one will be any different.
On another note, he’s not attractive. He still looks like a muppet to me.

  14. Orly says:

I like this shoot. It’s great that he’s paying homage to Cronenberg’s past films.
I look forward to Cosmopolis. He’d better bring it.

  15. Jenn says:

.I don’t think he is a bad actor ,I didn’t like any of the twilight movies or the books and I read them , waste of money and time anyway I watched remember me and wfe and bel ami ,and I thought he did a good job specially in wfe I love that movie .. so I hope that one day he has the respect he deserves I love him.

  16. My Darling Pinkett says:

Eh, I saw him in WFE and How To Be. He’s not a good actor, and I don’t see how this trailer or any teaser proves he can act.

  17. B says:

I like the Videodrome homage in the photoshoot.

I’m a huge Cronenberg fan and can’t WAIT for this movie. I’m not a big fan of Robert Pattinson, but I’m also not one of those fools who’s screaming about it. I’m going to give him a chance. Cronenberg is such a great filmmaker, I love his work, and I believe in him. I dislike Keira Knightley, but I thought she was good in A Dangerous Method. I think that Cronenberg could likely have gotten some good stuff out of Pattinson as well.

  18. elvynn says:

“PREMIERE: Is it good for an actor to be scared or not?

ROB: The first day of shooting, I really wasn’t trying to be clever. While we were waiting to shoot the first scene, Sarah Gadon (Who plays his wife) asked me: ‘So, how did you prepare for the role?” I lost it completely & I left the limousine, really angry while screaming: “Why are you judging me like that? Are you trying to test me or what?” (laughing)”

Wow he needs to chill out. How can he screams on his co-star for these bullshit?

    • no says:

I guess you missed the part where they point out he was LAUGHING when he said this. His humor doesn’t always translate in print.

      • Umm says:

Sorry, just because he was laughing while recounting the story doesn’t mean that he wasn’t being a rude asshole to Sarah.

I had so much hope for him, but his little girlfriend has become such a shitty influence on him. Both massive egos without the talent to match. Instead of just working hard and getting better at what they do, they’d rather complain about how no one understands them and how they love what they do blah blah blah blah. Now take your best shot, Twihards.

  19. LittleDeadGirl says:

I didn’t hate him in Water for Elephants and I think he has a real chance to make it as an actor if he continues to improve. He seems to be getting better in every move but who knows what his end potential is. I think this movie will show it. It sounds like heavy stuff and if he fucks it up I doubt people are gonna give him too many more chances.

  20. Mouse says:

I’m starting to like him more and more. He seems genuinely humble, unlike his bitchy egomaniac gf–when someone has to explain that they’re self deprecating, it makes the opposite very obvious.

  21. Chris says:

He’s going to be an amazing actor. I agree with you Bedhead, despite the fact that Robert Pattinson was born blessed and has achieved more than 99% of the people on this planet, you somehow feel the need to root for him. I don’t know what it is about him. There’s a self deprecating charm that makes you believe that while we may see him as great he doesn’t see himself that way at all.

  22. Sophie says:

Damn he looks good here. Love the one in the white T-shirt sitting on the floor…
