Tom Cruise at ‘Rock of Ages’ UK premiere: did someone tell him to tone it down?

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise was surprisingly low-key at the London premiere of Rock of Ages held in Leicester Square yesterday. This is very strange and a sudden departure from his recent display of mania at the LA premiere. I’m almost tempted to believe that it’s like some studio executive said, “Hey short stuff, tone it down. It’s starting to feel all 2005 up in here.” So Tom responded, “Oh yes, I am supposed to be a serious rock star. Thank you for the reminder. Now look at my sexy lifts.” Speaking of Tom’s shoes, he couldn’t really show them off to maximum effect on the black carpet in Los Angeles just a few days ago, but now it’s like he wants you to look at them, right? Just admit it. You can’t stop looking at the lifts.

Tom Cruise

Indeed, Subdued Tom was very subdued for this London event. How sad.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough wore a little black dress with poufy white sleeves by Valentino. I think the sheer sleeves really ruin the potential of this otherwise simple dress, and she could have “rocked” (ugh) the plunging neckline without such distracting, kleenex-like entities roosting on her shoulders. Julianne’s hair and makeup are also throwing me for a loop, and I think she’d look better with more dramatic makeup for this event.

Malin Ackerman

Malin Ackerman chose an ice-capadey, nude-colored dress with gold leaf embellishments for her premiere look. Obviously, this is a Marchesa creation that is less of a monstrosity than some of their other dresses, but still not a flattering look on anyone. Malin’s hair and makeup here remind me a lot of Kate Bosworth.

Russell Brand

Russell Brand was his usual eccentrically dressed self on the yellow carpet. Look, the scarves are back! I so missed those bloody scarves.

Paul Giamatti

Paul Giamatti is totally standing there thinking, “What the f–k am I doing in this movie, anyway?”

Diego Bonita

Diego Bonita was probably the best-dressed dude in attendance, right? He’s so, so pretty. At least he’s got that going for him.

    Tom really creeps me out.

    • Rory says:

Glad someone finally said it. Yep. Anyone who is that devoted to an evil cult of a “religion” like CO$ has to be, well, not balanced. I won’t comment on intelligence levels. What turns ME off is that gigantic ego; it’s sickening. I also think he chose Katie Holmes (“I’d really LIKE to MEET her!”) for her looks. How shallow is that? Total turn-off.

      • Amelia says:

There’s been speculation that he’s bipolar, but because the CO$ doesn’t allow medication that hasn’t been screened or some BS like that, it isn’t always under control.
I don’t think the CO$ thing is anything to do with intelligence in his case. He had a pretty crap upbringing by the sounds of it. I had a friend who was treated like dirt by her parents and converted to Islam then back to Christianity and now she’s a Bhuddist. Go figure. Her psych said it’s something about finding a stable figure that won’t screw you over. If that’s what he was looking for, I reckon the CO$ was the worst choice possible.

  2. Beyonce's Bump says:

I am putting Bonita on my up and coming hot young actor watch lists..lol, dude is giving me life in that suit! Julliane’s dress is a big NO. Tommy is well…tommy. He never dresses appropriately to these things and yes, he needs to chill on the manic creepy overly wide smile. It creeps people out. Other than that, I cannot wait to watch this film!

    • Choupette says:

*snort* Diego Whatshisface totally stole that pose from one of Fabio’s romance covers.

Mr.Tom looks nice in blue, but seriously? Is he going to wear a version of that windbreaker to every opening? Are Members Only jackets still in style?

  3. daisydoodle says:

I’m just wondering if Tom has the same foot issues that a woman has from wearing high heels all her life? His bunions must be horrible!

    • Amelia says:

Probably not, lifts and heels are like apples and oranges. I wear orthopaedic inserts because I have foot problems, and they give me an extra inch as a by-product of wearing them. Because the slope is nowhere near as extreme as that you’d find on a stiletto for example, the distribution of weight is still relatively even across your foot, even with the highest lifts.
Heels, however, mean all your weight is going through your upper metatarsals and the middle of your heel. Cue ouchies.
Either Tom has the greatest plastic surgeon alive, or he got a little too into character in an Interview with a Vampire… ¬¬
Russell looks like he’s a little less high this time 🙂

  4. gee says:

I lovvvveee the black and white dress.

  5. Eve says:

With Tom Cruise, the PR team ALWAYS have to keep the crazy under control.

You loose the rope a little bit and BAM!…insanity ensues.

    • Rhea says:

LOL. Yeah, he needs to ALWAYS tone down on his manic overly wide smile. I wonder how his PR reminded him before the premiere. “Mr. Cruise, remember what we told you before at the meeting?? Please, stop smiling that wide creepy smile. And yes, kissing the movie director is STILL a big NO-NO.”

    • Ruffian9 says:

Totally agree. PR for TC mut be a 24/7 gig, what with real-time monitoring of the crazy and knowing when to initiate the ‘take it down a notch or ten’ protocol. Dude looks nice and ‘refreshed’ as well. Surgery? Some secret zenu potion? I must know!

  6. Cleveland Girl says:

C’mon gals. Tom looks hot. Admit it. And most people don’t see the “lifts” or whatever they are. Plus that – he may be creepy- but he is a good actor. Let’s give some credit.

    • Rory says:

Why? He’s a delusional, egotistical freak.

      • The Original Original says:

I have to agree. I think he looks hot here. I dont see the lifts. He is a superb actor.

    • Amelia says:

      +1 Cleveland Girl.
I still occassionally crack out Top Gun and reminisce ^^

    • MrsNix says:

I think he’s totally batsh**, but I have to admit that man is still smokin’ hot, and I enjoy his films. He lost his mind, but he is still a fantastic actor.

  7. Bellabumbum says:

It looks like Tom is wearing the same outfit he wore to the US premiere, only in blue suede vs. grey suede. Must have been a sale at Baby Gap.

  8. bagladey says:

I think Tom looks good here. Julianne’s dress is a NO and the only reason I would watch this movie is because Paul Giamatti is in it.

  9. heidiho says:

    Cool elevator boots Tom!

  10. Rhiley says:

    Justin Theoreux wears lifts too.

  11. Cathy says:

Juliannes dress is ugly. I wouldn’t spend a dime to see this movie. Tom is a good actor, but there are other movies I would rather see.

  12. carrie says:

i want to see this movieeeeee! my future guilty pleasure!!!!

  13. Fatkid says:

Julianne’s boob is really bothering me in the first picture of her. She’s young, no kids, & small chested….how?

  14. Nanea says:

This is the RoA pres tour. So maybe someone could have suggested to Tiny Tom to do it the real rock star way and wear heels like Prince and Lenny Kravitz do.

Or maybe Crazy Cruise doesn’t want to appear even more crazy?

On a side note, Anonymous hacked $ciento Austria this past weekend, and they found all kinds of interesting inter-connecting businesses, e.g. high-ranking $cientos investing in “meds” made of tap water and lactose aka homeopathy. Birds of a feather…

  15. Aubra says:

He may be creepy, but I still would do the splits on his dong…he looks good!

  16. Mihaela says:

Please, please add a “like” option for the comments!
Totally agree with Cleveland Girl, he looked amazing AMAZING for his age so focusing on “lifts” alone is kind of petty…

    • Kara Ann says:

YES! I mean I don’t like Tom Cruise but I don’t find the lift thing an issue. He’s a HW leading man and it has been circumscribed that to be that you have to be tall so he wears lifts! I don’t know how many times I’ve read a post here where someone doesn’t do the shorties so, to be fair, he’s aware of that thinking and is trying to show himself to his best advantage. Ridicule him for Zenu ’cause he chose it and it’s harmful but he was born short so get over it!

  17. Toot says:

Those shades aren’t Tom’s friend. They’re magnifying his wrinkles.

  18. Ann says:

Julianne is a beautiful girl who is in desperate need of a good stylist. The dress is poorly fitted, and really schizophrenic. The plunging neckline says “tramp”, while the sleeves and hairdo say “Heidi of the Alps”. I don’t understand how a girl with her body doesn’t show it off with a beautifully fitted dress.

Also, can somebody have Marchesa banned from all red carpets? Forever? Let them stick to designing figure skating costumes. That brand is so stuck in a rut. You can spot a Marchesa “creation” a mile away. What I don’t understand is why anyone wears that shit.

    • Ruffian9 says:

“The plunging neckline says “tramp”, while the sleeves and hairdo say “Heidi of the Alps”.”

I actually snorted at this. Good one.

“Also, can somebody have Marchesa banned from all red carpets?”

THIS. Please. God, Zenu, whomever. Please make it happen.

  19. the original bellaluna says:

Rockin’ those Aviators, harkening back to the Maverick years.

These stupid Doily Dress designers DO know that this year is the Summer Olympics, not the Winter ones, correct?

  20. Stubbylove says:

What’s up the constant hand in the pocket Tom – itchy left ball? LOL on comment of Paul Giamatti.

  21. Jackson says:

Not like I’m just realizing this, but men have it so, so much easier than women on the red carpet. Dress, hair, makeup, heels, nails etc., versus dudes pretty much just showing up all ready to head out for bowling and burgers afterwards.

  22. Izzy says:

Maybe Tommy-Boy looks so down because Katie-Bot finally kicked him to the curb? One can only hope. And WTF is UP with Julianne Hough’s dress? She looks like one of those Swiss miss girls or a German beer wench at Oktoberfest (minus the good brewskis).

  23. Dee Cee says:

Meanwhile the Missus Katie Holmes posed with a group of children at a press conference for Artistry on Ice in Beijing today. She’s been in Asia promoting the skating show as an ambassador since last week, when she spoke at an event in Taiwan. While Katie spent the weekend overseas, her husband, Tom Cruise, was busy doing press for Rock of Ages. Tom met up with his costars for the film’s fashionable LA premiere Friday before the group traveled to London for another red carpet last night.

  24. Vesper says:

Am I the only one who thinks that Russell Brand looks like Charles Manson, especially the eyes?

  25. Snowpea says:

As a natural blonde, with (if I do say so myself) freakin’ awesome hair, (long, wavy, beachy, a bit messy) I am constantly looking at other people’s blonde hair and screaming silently ‘WHYYYYYYY?”.

Look at that bird Malin Ackerman, whoever she is…her blonde is brassy, yellow, cheap and looks like she did it herself. Juliannne’s is only marginally better.

I’ll never understand why women don’t get a top colourist to do their blonde. TIP: Kate Hudson is a natural mouse but she ALWAYS has awesome blonde hair so it can be done!

  26. Carolyn says:

This is Cruise (PR) Control 101. I recall Cruise or Stallone saying years ago that they didn’t need to travel O/S to do press junkets and premieres for their movies..they were that arrogant. How times have changed. Those on planet Cruise NEVER thought the public would turn on him. Rock of Ages isn’t a must-see movie…movies are a dime a dozen and audiences are far more picky. All involved in this movie desperately need it to be successful. If it flops it will be bad for all. No movie is guaranteed success these days. Even Cruise now gets told where and when to appear and do the publicity thing.

  27. Its like you read my mind! You seem to grasp so much about this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I feel that you can do with some p.c. to force the message home a bit, but other than that, that is great blog. A great read. I’ll definitely be back.
