Olympics: Michael Phelps breaks records, Team USA takes gold in gymnastics

Let’s talk about the Olympics. You’re going to have to excuse me preemptively for not always using the right terminology and stuff – I’m not a sports writer, obviously. And I don’t have the time to go as in-depth as I’d like to about some of this stuff, especially since I’m suffering from a pretty bad Olympic hangover right now, having stayed up late (late for me) to watch all of NBC’s dragging coverage of yesterday’s Olympic events. So, let me just do some highlights:

*Michael Phelps won gold and silver yesterday! Team USA won gold in the Men’s Relay (so, Phelps and Ryan Lochte won), and Phelps took silver in the 200m butterfly. Chad le Clos, a South African HOTTIE, won gold over Phelps. I’m including photos of Chad because, you know, HOT HOT HOT. I was really proud of Chad too! He looked so happy to win. Princess Charlene of Monaco was there, cheering him on too. As for Phelps… he got his game face on in a hurry after failing to place in his first competition, and after Lochte bungled the anchor leg of the relay of the 400m Freestyle a few days ago, losing first place to the French. That French swimmer, Yannick Agnel, is really bringing it. Yannick is a BEAST.

*GOOOOOOoooo Missy Franklin! The cutest, most adorable sweetheart of Team USA’s swim team got her first gold! I love her. She’s the cutest thing.

*I’m seriously worried about Team USA’s defending gold-medal champions, Kerri Walsh, Misty May-Treanor, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers. Kerri and Misty’s first match was pretty rough – although they still won, they just seemed lethargic. They improved in their last two matches, though. I’m still worried – Kerri just announced that she has pinkeye!!! That’s a big deal. But really, let’s talk about Dalhausser and Rogers. I was RIVETED by their game yesterday against Spain – Phil and Todd won, but their win was tainted by a bad call and a complete and total hissy fit thrown by the Spanish players – you can read more about it here. The lesson: keep playing until you hear the whistle, for the love of God. Plus, Big Man Dalhausser is playing like he’s hurting.

*Now, let’s talk about what happened in gymnastics last night. USA! USA! USA! I’m so happy and proud for those girls. Unlike the men’s gymnastics team, the girls knew how to perform under pressure. I cried as they nailed routine after routine, pushing themselves and showing off just what a cohesive unit they are. I think Ali Reisman and Gabby Douglas are the biggest gymnastic stars in the world!!!

*Have you ever seen a Russian gymnastics team have a meltdown like that? I cannot remember the Russians ever being THAT emotional. Of course, I can’t remember ever seeing a Russian team screw up so badly. When those little girls were crying, I just wanted to give them all hugs. But really: the Russian girls = the American boys’ team. I’ve never seen the American men have a total meltdown like they did on Monday either.

*The girls’ gymnastics leotards were AWFUL. I don’t even want to speak about what that unflattering leotard did to poor Gabby.

And that’s all I’ve got. I’ve been watching other events, of course – who knew that archery was so compelling? – but I just wanted to talk about some of the big events.

PS… Don’t yell about the photos! We don’t have access to any of the photos from the gymnastics events, so I just went with the swimmer dudes. You’re welcome!!

OMGosh so excited for the FAB 5.. those girls were amazing.. Sad for the men. They just seemed to crumble with the weight of the pressure.

and Congrats to Michael. What an amazing accomplishment.

    • Canda says:

Phelps is so awesome, I’m amazed by his accomplishments! But… there’s something about his mouth that reminds me of Albert from Little House on the Prairie (and that’s not a good thing).

      Sigh… swimmers…

  2. Naye in VA says:

Aughh!!1 FAB 5. Those girls were totally awesome. I almost woke the baby screaming for Aly at the end like “all you have to do is not fall on your HEAD!” lol

at the same time i felt bad for the Russians, but that’s because i’m a sap. Gymnastics is incredibly difficult and it must be even more difficult to perform at the biggest dance and mess up like those girls did. Hand clap for all competing because i never could.

side note: ive already decided im going to be the most embarrassing sports mom ever. dont judge me.

    • Esmom says:

It’s crazy to think that all these girls basically give up normal lives to train for a few moments of glory…the pressure must be beyond unbearable. Kudos to all of them, winners and losers, for maintaining as much poise as they do.

  3. marie says:

The girls were fantastic, so happy for them, they were so amazing.. I did tear up for the little Russian girl with bangs that messed up at the end though..

And I was screaming last night for Phelps (no idea why, I already knew they won, I’m so ridiculous) Such a huge accomplishment.

My only complaint is that I am so sleepy, I feel like I have to watch every event so I’m staying up way too late..

    • Momoftwo says:

I know! Coverage doesn’t end till 11 and then I am too amped up to fall asleep!

So happy phelps got a gold last night!

This Olympics is just proving what an amazing feat that guy pulled off in 2008 with his 8 for 8!

    • Amelia says:

I was screaming for Phelps and I was wide awake! He was so gracious as well, walking around the pool with Le Clos, who, btw is such a cutie.
On an obligatory British note, Beth Tweddle got the highest score on bars!!!
Obviously I’ll be rooting for her in the individual’s, but I can honestly say I was beyond impressed at USAs performance yesterday. Watched the whole thing and that one immaculate vault was amazing 🙂

      • marie says:

I’m really curious to see who wins the individual, not so sure Aly could pull that off, maybe Gabby, it will be fun to watch regardless who wins..

And I love the last name Tweedle..

    • Relli says:

AW i know and she knew she screwed up, poor little thing!

    • ya says:

I loved the gymnastics too and also felt bad for the Russian team. This is not the first time they’ve collapsed under pressure and become very emotional – same thing happened in 2000. I loved Khorkina’s dramatics from back then. I hope they can take gold in 2016!

Loved Gabby Douglas too – hope she gets enough credit for being the only USA girl to do all four apparatus in the team final and hitting all four!! I’ll be rooting for her in the all-around!

    • gigi says:

As crazy happy I was for team USA, I couldn’t help but get a bit teary-eyed for the Russians. Heartbroken little girls crying is never a pleasant sight.

  4. cmc says:

This is my first Olympics as a US citizen do I’m fangirling about this too!! USA! USA!!

And team Gabby. She is seriously the cutest! Anyone else mad about how NBC focused the entire women’s gymnastics competition on Jordyn Weibler’s upset/heartbreak? Um, leave the girl alone NBC. And god forbid you actually congratulate Gabby and Aly for earning their spots! /end rant

    • brin says:

Yay! Go USA! They are amazing to watch.

    • KatC says:

Completely agree! It was genuinely horrible the way they kept shoving cameras into her face and making sure she was at least in the background of every shot. Especially when she was trying so hard to compose herself. And the way she tried to walk directly into the locker rooms but was forced to do the press line immediately after realizing that she wouldn’t make the all-around? Outright ugly.

We ended up changing the channel in protest (yeah, cuz NBC will really be feeling that burn XD) but honestly, I understand that people have limited name recognition, and Jordan Weibler is one of the names that we do recognize, but that doesn’t mean at all the coverage has to focus on her. A few sentences about how the number one in the world won’t be making the all around? sure, that’s fine, but to taint the other athlete’s victories? Just biased and wrong IMO.

Sorry, kind of had a rant built up about that. Biased Olympic reporting has been a real pet peeve of mine this Olympics.

Also, congratulations on your citizenship! Have fun rooting for your new home team 😀

    • The Original Mia says:

I got so teary with the Fab 5 win. They worked their butts off and brought home the gold.

The boys…oh, my…so much hotness in the water.

Le Clos is a cute. His dad was cracking me up on the BBC. He was so proud. He apologized for embarrassing his son. Is Charlene coaching the SA team? Saw her down at the pool hugging Le Clos after his win.

Now for my NBC rant. Get over it! The rules are in place. Every competitor knows going in there’s a chance they won’t make it to the all around finals. All the ballyhooing actually made me sick. Would NBC have spent nearly as much time and energy if Gabby had come in 3rd? I seriously doubt it.

      • ya says:

Completely agree. Jordyn Wieber handled the whole thing with a lot of dignity, and I hope she reaps the benefits in endorsement deals, but I don’t think Gabby Douglas received enough credit in the broadcast for being the only US girl to do all four events and for hitting all four.

Wieber should be commended for coming back from disappointment to hit solid routines, but she also had the lowest scores of the US girls on all of the 3 events she did.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree too – I felt sad for Jordan, but she still got to win a team gold and was a big part of them doing earning that. Gabby and Aly earned their spots fair and square, let’s focus on them now.

And in general, I think it’s time to stop shoving a camera in the face of crying teenagers.

    • mayamae says:

They did the same thing at olympic trials. Nastia Luikin – the reigning all around olympic gold medalist – performed poorly even falling off the uneven bars. I commented how much poise these young ladies have. She knew her olympic chances had just gone down the drain and the camera was shoved up her nose. I’m a pretty calm person but I wanted to reach out and shove the camera away on her behalf.

I actually believe the incredible focus on Jordan Weiber gave the other 4 girls some relief. Years ago, Kim Zmeskal was supposed to sweep everything. She was on every magazine cover and the pressure was horrendous. She crashed and burned while whiny little trembling Shannon Miller was able to shine without any of the pressure. I’ve never gotten over that.

  5. Amea says:

The gymnastics were amazing. Those girls betta WERK.

  6. ruby says:

Well I’m really proud of our French swimmers, they have done amazingly well, especially Camille Muffat and Yannick Agnel ! Everyone here is thrilled.

And please stop saying that Lochte bungled the relay… Agnel was just faster because he’s that good a swimmer. It’s demeaning his performance to imply that he only won because Lochte failed. Even the relay yesterday when France came second, Agnel was catching up on Phelps and put a lot of distance between himself and the rest, despite starting off with no advantage whatsoever. He has shown he really is a force to reckon with.
I have a lot of respect for Yannick and Camille, they’re really decent people, honest and hardworking and with a lack of arrogance which is refreshing. Can’t really say the same about Phelps and Lochte. That grill ? Really ?

    • Mia 4S says:

I agree with you Ruby, even though they aren’t my French swimmers. The fans and commentators do the USA no favors when it becomes “well we would have won, except so and so was off, had a bad race, etc.” No…you lost. The other guy was better. It happens, and makes the ones you do win that much sweeter.

      • Shannon1972 says:

Mia: I understand what you are saying. But I don’t think you are taking into account the questions that these athletes are being asked after their races. They are basically being asked to justify why they didn’t win. Saying they messed up isn’t good enough. I mean, just look at the video of NBC’s anchorman, Bob Costas shaming Michael Phelps last night after winning his 18th Olympic medal. All Costas wanted to know is why wasn’t it gold? And I think Phelps was very gracious towards Le Clos.
Phelps knew he coasted when he shouldn’t have, and he said so. And he also said that Le Clos swam a great race. But Costas wouldn’t let up on him. So they are backed in to making certain statements. Not to mention that elite athletes are extraordinarily competitive by nature…or they would not be competing at the world level. When they are disappointed in their performances, of course they are going to dissect themselves and think about what they could have done differently.

      • Mia 4S says:

Actually Shannon you did misunderstand me, but that may have been my writing. When I say “we would have won…” I mean the collective “we” of fans and commentators. The athletes have been very likable overall, some fans have been iffy, and far too many NBC commentators (as you described) have been horrid. They do the althetes no favors in undervaluing the achievements of non-US athletes by implying something was “wrong” with the Americans. Maybe they had a damn good race but the other guy had a better one! Maybe that’s it! Phelps should have pushed Ryan Seacrest in the pool. At least we haven’t had any reports if threats from fans, like that poor UK diver got on twitter. So gross!

      • Shannon1972 says:

Mia…Oops! Sorry! I completely misunderstood you. In that case, I agree with you 100%. 🙂
Btw: I would pay good money to see Seacrest pushed in a pool! Lol!
And what about the UK Men’s gymnasts winning a medal for the first time? I was thrilled for them, and I’m not even British! I think the majority of fans appreciate a great athlete, or a dramatic achievement, no matter what the athelete’s country of origin.

      • Mia 4S says:

New event for 2016! “Push Ryan Seacrest in the Pool!” Co-Ed. The Americans are heavy favorites but watch for a strong challenge from the Canadians (since they also get to see a lot of his “reporting”)! 😉

    • Kaiser says:

Yeah, I do think Lochte f–ked up, though, by underestimating how strong Agnel was and is. It felt like Lochte stopped trying for the last 20m.

And while I’m not a huge fan of Lochte’s grill, it wasn’t necessary to diss the American men. They’re working their asses off just as much as the French.

    • Lara says:

I am soooooo happy for Michael Phelps!!!! He is absolutely outstanding in every way. Yannick Agnel is a very impressive swimmer and a great competitor. However, I respectfully disagree with the previous commentators who called Phelps arrogant, really??? How exactly is he arrogant? He seems to be very down-to-earth regardless of his achievements. And personally I think he is gorgeous, yes I wanted to mention this a while ago when he came forth and everyone began to condemn him. He is an amazing athlete, I knew he’ll be back. Great achievement from the American Fabulous 5. I am originally from Russia and felt very bad for our girls but American gymnasts were amazing, such a discipline!

    • Amelia says:

France has been kicking butt in the pool in these Games!

    • Zoid says:

Well the thing about people saying it was bungled is we all have their best times sitting on the screen the entire time. Phelps and Lochte are/were favorites because they had some of the best times, so it’s easy to say ‘What happened, thought you were the best?’
It’s not meant as a slap in the face to the person who won.

    • jaye says:

That grill is obnoxious, but really…how are Phelps and Lochte arrogant?

  7. Sisi says:

The USA ladies were fantastic. I especially loved Gabby Douglas’ floor routine.

And Im also loving the archery competition. Friday our Dutch Rick van der Ven is up against South Korean Im Dong Hyun, the visually impaired world record holder and favorite for the gold. Im shitting bricks already thinking about it.

  8. Alex'sMommy says:

Go team USA gymnastics! The whole team is adorable. I felt so sad for the one Russian girl viktoria. I think that head Russian girl was going to order a hit on her. She had a hard time on the balance beam and floor exercise.

  9. ramona says:

I’m going to the Olympic Archery tomorrow morning – I’m soooooooo excited!!

  10. Jen says:

The Russians fell apart like that in Atlanta in 1996.

    • BRE says:

They did breakdown in Atlanta. Svetlana Khorkina was on the team then and they were really pissed about how loud the Americans were during their events.

      • mayamae says:

I’m American and as proud of my country as anyone else, but I especially despise the olympic shout down American fans do with the “USA USA USA”! I think it would be acceptable if we were a tiny little country with a few scrappy players never expected to win. But it’s very predictable that the US and China will have the most medals because we usually have the most players.

      • ya says:

Ya and I think – if I remember correctly – that the same thing happened in 2000. They had a surprise podium finish though in 2004 – their team wasn’t doing well prior to those Athens Olympics – and it was great to see them so genuinely happy that time.

Maybe they do better as underdogs, who knows…

    • ya says:

Mustafina of the Russian team had a great quote after the team finals last night though. She said that they were crying not because they finished silver, but because they didn’t perform their best at the end. She also said that even if they had hit their routines, the USA had the better team and would still likely have won gold.

I thought that was great sportsmanship.

  11. lucy2 says:

I knew in advance that the girls won, but I still watched the gymnastics – I couldn’t believe what a blow out it was. The USA girls were fantastic on all events, especially vault, but all the other teams just fell apart in ways I’ve never seen before. That poor Russian girl, it looked like her arms collapsed under her during the floor routine, and the beam routines were a mess.
Loved the last USA gymnast to go, breaking into a smile when she completed her first tumbling pass and knew they had it in the bag.
    How cute is Gabby!

I get tired just watching stuff like the relay! All those swimmers do an amazing job.

Shallow note – I think Michael Phelps is the only person in the world who looks better WITH a swim cap on vs. without. As soon as he takes it off, it reminds me of that Seinfeld were Jerry’s girlfriend looked good in one light but bad in another.

    • NYC_girl says:

OMG – I was just thinking the same thing re the swim cap! I was like, I must be spending too much time at home watching TV. He really does look good in some shots, and weird in others. But it was nice to see him acting gracious after their win yesterday and appreciative of his team. I saw that Jerry episode a few weeks ago – so funny. The other guys look weird with the cap, like instant face-lift.

    • mayamae says:

He has an anatomical problem with his jaw – like Bristol Palin had. I’ve read he will be having corrective surgery after the olympics. It’s most noticeable when he’s doing his king kong impression after he wins.

  12. Mirella says:

What an amazing night for the girls & guys. Go team USA!

  13. TG says:

I was wondering too why all the focus is on Jordan as if Gabby and Aly didn’t earn their way to the top. Yes, Gabby is super cute! And Aly is kind of sexy I think. I agree with Kaiser, I rarely like Team USA’s leotard/uniform. I mean, they looked like Team Canada (I love Canada, don’t get me wrong) but it wasn’t attractive on them. Why is no one commenting on the sloppy hairstyles our Americans are sporting. I seriously would give point deductions for bad hair. I was blown away by that Meiser girls vault. I am not an expert on gymnastics and rely on the commentators to help me along, same for diving, but as soon as I saw that vault and even before they said it I knew that was a “Perfect 10”. Yes, Team USA was amazing last night. For some reason the floor exercise is the hardest for everyone. Team USA messed up big time on that in qualifying the other night too. I love those Russian girls though. Wish that diva had brought her A game would have been nice to see some better competition. And what happened to the Chinese? Also, I am liking Phelps much more now and Lochte too. Losing seems to have humbled them a bit. What happened to Phelps magic touch last night? He always has an uncanny way of outtouching everyone even when he is behind them and it looks like the other person touched first. And that French guy Yannick Agnel is amazing and I am still enthrall of that relay the other night. I actually like that different people win each year because it gives each country motivation to fight and fight hard and that is why the relay is so exciting every year. I was jumping and screaming my head off watching that relay. And even though I was disappointed we didn’t win, I have to be in awe of what Agnel was able to do. Even if he does look like Frankenstein in his goggles and swimsuit. I am going to google him now to see what he really looks like.

  14. Relli says:

    USA! USA! USA!

Last night was an amazing show, i got home late but caught most of it and the recap later. What amazing moments both in gymnastics and for swimming! I love the Olympics, its the only time i truly believe in sitting on the couch and watching every moment from beginning to end. Seriously, how can you not get teared up when they play the National Anthem. Also i loved seeing Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin in the crowds cheering and being excited for the girls, talk about unity!

  15. TG says:

Have to add a question here, regarding Missy Franklin since I have no one else to pose this to. First off, I think she is super sweet and genuine and I admire her poise and maturity and her parents as well in the choices she has made, but I wonder why she would insist on maintaining her eligibilty when she could be making a lot of money. I don’t know if her parents are rich but that must cost them a lot of money for her training. I know it would in my life which is the reason I never got lessons for anything growing up. But, the real reason I wonder why she would want to compete in college when there could be no real competition. I mean she is an Olympian what joy that can there be in winning every high school and collegiate race against people who aren’t even in the same swimming class as you? I don’t think I would enjoy beating 5 year-olds to the finish line and that is what it will be like for her.

    • NYC_girl says:

I don’t know if I’m right, but she’s graduating soon, maybe she wants to stay with her swim team for one more year? I don’t know how it works regarding scholarships for college, sponsorships, etc. If you have a scholarship, that takes care of part of the cost, right? I assume corporate $ must come into play at some point, esp when college is finished and you need the $ to train, travel, support yourself, etc. Not sure what you mean by “no real competition – ” she had to compete to get to the Olympics, so she’s competing against other athletes, and probably traveling during the year. Don’t many of these young people go to college and continue to train? I’m sure some of them don’t but again, I don’t know how it all works.

    • Kay_la says:

I don’t think her joy comes from winning high school races. I think it comes from being part of the team and swimming with her friends. She’s 17, at 17 friends and high school can seem huge especially if you devote so much time training. I’m sure the majority of her social life revolved around her high school team and she doesn’t want to give that up for money. She didnt want to move to a better training program so she could stay in Colorado and have a more normal life. She probably wants that same kind of experience in college. I think it would be similar to a child actor still wanting to go to prom even though they go to Hollywood parties. I don’t know about her families financial situation, but I don’t think she is turning down the money because they dont need it, just that she values her experience being a normal teenager more.

      • NYC_girl says:

I agree – she stayed in Colorado and seems to be close with her schoolmates; I’d want to stay with them as long as I could too. She seems to be close with her parents and very grounded for a young girl. I love that she just got her braces off – she’s so charming.

      • TG says:

Good response. I would definitely want to keep my coach. I was just thinking that she should strike while the iron is hot but better to stay grounded and safe than turn in to a Lohan or worse (if that is even possible to be wors than lohan). I still wish Jenny Simpson (Barringer) would have stayed with her Colorado coach. She is running the 1500 meters and in my opinion the best middle distrance runner the US has seen in a long while. But ever since she graduated college she hasn’t been as good, at least I don’t think. But I have big hopes for her. The problem with track is people don’t race to their fullest potential they only race to win so everybody goes as slow as possible and then kicks it in the end where as swimming everyone is racing as fast as possible and that is what I like to see. If I were lucky enough to get to the Olympics I would race my heart out. I would rather lose doing a personal best than win running very slow as is often the case. The only time you get to see great distance races are the off meets when they decide to race for time or world records.

  16. Aussie girl says:

I’m not even American but love, love, love phelps. He is a supreme athletic & I enjoy watching his triumphs in the pool. Regardless of nationality his talent is a pleasure to watch & cheer him on!!!

  17. hoya_chick says:

I loved everything! I have been watching everything live throughout the day online (the dumb ass site keeps crashing though! Get it together NBC!) because I cannot stay up so late and then avoid the internet(which gives me life)all day because there are spoilers on every site before NBC gets around to airing it….their nightly news even has what happened when it comes on at 6:30pm in NYC before their prime time coverage begins at 8, that makes no sense.

Anyway, I was ecstatic about the girls winning. I was getting all fan girl in my office, ppl are on vacay so it’s all good. I am super proud of them. Everyone was amazing, sticking those landings and over all a total team effort. It was amazing.

The whole Jordyn (that’s really how she spells it, lord help us) not making the all around was sad yes, but I think as an elite athlete you have to be able to put on you game face and then bawl your eyes out later. It was also disgusting of NBC to be all up in her face like that when she obviously needed a moment to compose herself. So crass and sensationalized, so American. Sigh. Hopefully she’ll take comfort in the team gold that they won and be happy for her teammates when they do compete in the all around finals.

I think that Gabby and Ali simply did better and she knew only 2 girls from each team would be chosen. She seemed to go in assuming she’d be 1 of the 2. Sucks that the other 2 girls who made it didn’t get their shine cause everyone was focused on Jordyn not making it. Yes she is the reigning world champion, but when you step on that floor it’s every girl for themselves and what you do in that moment not anything from before.

Congrats to Phelps! It will be along time if ever until someone achieves what he has. I’ve been rooting for him since Sydney back in ’00. And the man irregardless of his sometime douchiness is an amazing athlete! On the bright side now that he is retiring, we won’t be subjected to Debbie Phelps’ awful hair and taste in jewelry (which she seems to have passed on to her daughters) lol. Those necklaces were killing me softly.

Much love to the French swimmers who are definitely bringing it! I actually thought Phelps won and then they were like oh no Chad won I was stunned. I love swimming, it’s so dramatic. Missy is tooooo adorable. Her first medal AND it’s a gold? Damn girl lol.

Can’t wait for track and the men’s basketball finals. I love the Olympics….can you guys tell? Ha!

    • jaye says:

I don’t get it. My goddaughter’s name is Jordyn (spelled with a ‘y’). What’s the problem with it?

  18. backwards says:

Girl power! How amazing are all those gymnasts. Such skill and dedication!

In Aus there is quite a bit of coverage on doping allegations against Ye Shiwen. Imagine how it must feel as a world-class athlete to have your (genuine, until proven otherwise) accomplishments attacked on the basis of nothing but idle speculation. I feel so sorry for her, I hope she ignores all the haters and is celebrated for being a fantastic olympian!

    • TG says:

I was one of those people questioning that Chinese girls abilities, but then I read that she lives and trains in Australia so I decided that she must be legitimate for some reason I can’t imagine an Aussie cheating. At least I will give her the same benefit of the doubt I give everyone else.

      • backwards says:

Not sure why training in Australia would make her legitimate. It’s unfair for her to be judged by something that happened in her country many years ago.

    • Zoid says:

As someone who used to do swimming (obviously not at this level) let me just say, there are two very legitimate reasons for people thinking there were drugs involved.

      1) the amount of time she cut off from her best time, 7 seconds, is HUGE. I cannot emphasize enough how huge of a difference that is. My school had a championship winner on our team abd if she improved her times by 1 second, it was the difference between state and regional championships. Swimming is all about the milliseconds. You can see the best times for yourself, usually the difference between the best and worst swimmer at the olympics is 3 seconds or less.

      2) She beat the men’s score. To be perfectly blunt, this is exceptionally rare in any sport. Not only that, she beat the BEST men’s score. It’s kind of unheard of.

I’m not trying to drag down her victory but I can understand the concern with cheating.

I’ve giving her the benefit of the doubt because of her age, she’s barely sixteen. It’s not as if she’s Michelle Smith, who suddenly, after years of swimming, became a world class swimmer in her 20’s (and eventually got busted for using a masking agent in a sample).

Part of it is also because I want her to be clean.I’m not a swimmer, but I like watching it, and it doesn’t need another doping scandal.
And yet, sadly, because of her country’s recent past history concerning doping, there’s going to be suspicion.

      • TG says:

I wouldn’t put it past the Chinese to create these athletes in a lab somewhere.

  19. TG says:

@Mia 4S – Yes, can we get Seacrest out of there? He is the one who foisted the Kardashians on the unsuspecting American public and the world at large. He is terrible even when doing interviews on the red carpet. Poor Britian being subjected to that monkey. Yes, someone please push him into the pool or better yet the kayaking river.

    • mayamae says:

I am enraged that he’s part of olympic coverage. He’s on fox and E! not NBC. He just drives me crazy because he’s so bland and white bread. I like to stick to Bob Costas who at least is an all around lover of sports and typically knows what he’s talking about. Let Ryan stick with the vapid Kardashians.

  20. T.C. says:

Go Team USA! Michael Phelps is the man.

  21. Hanna says:

Man, i wish i was some kind of olympic athlete..

  22. Jenna says:

Eww. What the hell? I thought you said Chad le Clos was a hottie? Hot he is not! Ugh.

So incredibly happy and proud of Phelps, the gymnasts and all of the US athletes! 🙂

  23. Zimmer says:

Le Clos is hot (and seems so sweet)!

    • Gene Parmesan says:

Yes he is!!! all he could talk about was what it meant to even swim with Phelps who is his hero. And to beat him, Chad was so emotional! He’s so humble and cute

  24. Reece says:

I knew the outcome since yesterday morning as I was watching it online. Still I watched swimming and gymnastics last night on tv. I’m sure I’ve been keeping my neighbors up for a week.
I did not know beach volleyball was so popular around the world. I love watching and seeing all the people there.

  25. Little Darling says:

*The girls’ gymnastics leotards were AWFUL. I don’t even want to speak about what that unflattering leotard did to poor Gabby.

Kaiser – I completely agree! They were especially horrific this year….do you know who designed them?

Sidenote, so were the women’s synchronized diving suits…there was such little material covering their bums it looked like a reverse landing waxing strip!!!

    • mayamae says:

I agree with the synchronized women’s suits. The suits were cut so narrowly around the breast area that if the women actually had breasts I think their nipples would have been exposed. It also made them look like a bunch of linebackers.

And like it or not, it does matter how you look in your uniform. You think the sand volleyball ladies wear the tiniest of bikinis for any other reason than they look great in them? I don’t know if I could concentrate constantly worrying that my ass crack shows and hoping my bikini wax is impeccable.

      • TG says:

I love the uniform for beach volleyball. Kari and Misty are awesome and I get disappointed when they wear tights rather than their teeny bottoms. I am not gay but I want to see skin. I wish the swimming ladies still wore their sexy suits and the men still wore their super sexy speedos. Oh well, I guess those days are over for good.

  26. Shelly says:

Our girls’ gymnastics team was amazing! They really pulled together as a team. I was so proud of those girls! I agree about their leotard issues. And I think poor Gabby did get the worst of that issue, poor girl. I also felt terrible for the Russians. They were so upset, and I don’t blame them. It was hard to watch them make such huge mistakes and see their faces knowing it was all over for their Gold Medal dreams.

  27. Sachi says:

The girls were amazing in gymnastics!

If Gabby Douglas kept on performing as well as she did yesterday, she will win the Gold in All-around. She was the only one in her team who competed in all the rotations, and she was consistently good.

But McKayla’s vault and sticking that landing. Wow.

Sorry for the Russians, especially for that one girl, Aliya Mustafina. She seemed to be the only one who did better than her team yesterday, but it was sad seeing the others’ faces the moment they knew they messed up. Their concentration was ruined and the tension was evident in their faces.

‘Grats to Phelps! 19 medals and counting….

His teammates (save Lochte) are hotties. 😀 All of them were great during the relay.

    • flan says:

Yeah, her vault was off the scale. Did you see how the judges looked at her? Mouths wife open. And that landing, AMAZING!

  28. Unbeweavable says:

I was in total awe of the women’s gymnastics team. They owned every event.

I loved watching Michael Phelps’s mom in the audience. Her disappointment when she realized he didn’t come in first then she slowly clapped for the other guy. She was a total class act. Although I told my husband “if that camera would have been on me- America would have seen the words mother f$@?er or son of a… slowly come out of my mouth”. I have also decided I’m going to be a psycho sports mom. I hope to have my own twitter followers and topic on Celebitchy if Lil Unbeweavable ever goes professional in anything.

Side note- I feel totally uncomfortable watching Michael Phelps on tv because I dated someone that looked a lot like him before my husband. And even though it isn’t him, I feel like I’m eyeballing my ex.. It’s just weird..

    • mayamae says:

You see, I actually hate the fact that a silver medal wasn’t good enough for Phelps’ mom and sisters. Same with the Russian gymnasts. I was sad for them but I bet the Chinese team would have been beaming ear to ear with pride if they got the silver. It’s the mark of a sore loser and I don’t like that attitude on any athlete.

      • Sachi says:

Yeah, it was a bit uncomfortable seeing Phelps’ team look disappointed when he didn’t get the gold. Even his coach looked a bit angry there when Michael only got Silver.

I’m sure the other athletes would love to have gotten on the podium for any medal.

Still, they were probably spoiled for the Gold, though, since they truly expected him to have touched the wall first, but because Michael didn’t give that final push with his feet, le Clos beat him by a millisecond. It wasn’t that they were angry he was only 2nd best, but that he lost by such a thin margin and the Gold could have been easily his.

I do think, though, that Michael is done with swimming. It’s just his Mum and his family who keep on pushing him to achieve more, and the expectation of the nation that he go out with a huge bang. He doesn’t seem like he has the same drive and determination as he did in Beijing, and he really has nothing to prove anymore.

katy perry is a scorpio. of course she likes to be courted. she is beautiful. she has big blue eyes (i am a scorpio too and my eyes are big and brown.) she has a big chest, no waist, and big hips. absolutely beautiful. scorpios love attention just like katy perry. russel brand failed to give her what she needed. beautiful flawless skin. utterly gorgeous. kim kardashian is gorgeouse too but she is a libra. she just doesn’t have the intensse feelings. i am half mexican by the way.

  30. Nicolette says:

The men’s relay was great! I was yelling “Swim!” at the TV. They had such a huge lead over everyone else, it was amazing. Love Phelps, keep the medals coming!

As for the Fab 5, I too got misty eyed watching them take the gold. They really performed well under pressure, and I have to admit I kinda enjoyed watching the Russian team crumble. After watching Jordan Wieber not qualify for the all around (WTF?) I was happy to see her get her medal.

Love watching The Olympics! But what the hell is Seacrest doing there? Shouldn’t he be somewhere fluffing up a Kardashian?

  31. ann says:

Congratulations to Michael Phelps. I’ll never forget or forgive Kellogg’s for dropping him in 2009. “Just say no” to Frosted Flakes.

  32. Chris: now with 10% less negativity says:

For a guy who’s sick of swimming Phelps is doing really well. Last night I heard that he’s so sick of water that when he goes to the beach with his friends he won’t even swim with them. While they swim he just stays on the beach.

  33. molly says:

Congrats to Team USA! And for the first time ever, I can see why women find Phelps sexy…he really is a hot little piece of ass. I wouldve loved to be in the middle of that group hug that Phelps and Lochte were in with the other two swimmers after winning gold. Yum.

  34. Shannon says:

le sigh…I am trying to avoid Olympic spoilers so I can watch primetime on the West coast and still have some surprise. I do not come to this site for Olympic news. I like celebrity gossip. Actually one of the reasons I was coming to this site was to avoid Olympic spoilers. If you are going to spoil the damn Olympics for everyone on the West coast at leas put some damn spoiler TAG in the title!!!!!

    • Linda says:

Ummm…this is from the previous nights coverage, meaning that it already had aired on the west coast well before this was posted.

    • flan says:

Yeah, at some point when you don’t watch something, you’re going to get spoiled.

I love the Olympic coverage and personal touch on Celebitchy.

  35. another nina says:

I keep forgetting – who is the next Nadia Comaneci – Larisa Iordache? Looks like Douglas is in the best condition right now. Komova and Mustafina may fight for a medal as well. What has happened to a Chinese team?
Russians did not win any medal in Beijin, so silver is definitely a step forward. Objectively, they were not ready for gold – Komova and Mustafina haven’t recovered from injuries, the girl with bangs is completely inexperienced – it was her first big competition, and Paseka was brought to the competition only because she is the best at vault and she failed it…They cried not just because they lost – they were embarrassed that they lost by such a huge difference – 178 vs 183…But Mustafina also mentioned that they cried from happiness as well, they were afraid that they won’t win any medal at all…

  36. another nina says:

And look – I was right: Douglas, Komova, Mustafina.
