Joseph Gordon Levitt on fans rooting for him & Zooey Deschanel: “It’s awkward”

Joseph Gordon Levitt

Joseph Gordon Levitt is a strange character. On the one hand, I appreciate that he (unlike Kristen Stewart, who doesn’t apply in this instance) has escaped the “child star” trap, but I also take slight offense at his recent claims that pretty girls aren’t funny and that (allegedly) Anne Hathaway is an insufferable snob. However, I can truly get behind JGL’s recent promotional efforts for action thriller Premium Rush, in which he plays a dedicated bike messenger pursued by Michael Shannon. Because, let’s face it, this looks like a truly frivolous, popcorn-munching movie. So let’s review some excerpts from JGL’s recent “20 Questions” feature with Playboy, shall we?

Joseph Gordon Levitt

On his former “child star” status: “I wouldn’t say I was a normal kid. I’d say I was a lucky little kid, because unfortunately it’s not normal to have extraordinarily good parents who love and support you. I played baseball, did gymnastics, took piano lessons and started acting as just another one of the things I did. I wasn’t pressured into it. But it was acting I loved. I had a really cool acting teacher who taught us how to become a character, to be realistic and feel those feelings, so I hated being expected to behave like an idiot in TV commercials because they seem to think that’s what sells toys or whatever. I remember on Beethoven we weren’t allowed to pet the dog because it would have distracted him. For a dog lover that was disappointing and weird.”

How he avoids tabloid status: “Being on TV when I was a teenager in high school was way harder than anything I’ve experienced since. It prepared me for what it is to work in pop culture. I’ve learned I have basically two different interactions with people. I love when someone approaches me and tells me they’ve seen me in something that made them feel something and that they connected to it. That’s part of why I do it. The other interaction is with people who really don’t care about the movies or anything like that. They just sort of buy into the fame thing, and that feels icky to me.”

On his grown-up movie star transition: “As a teenager in the 1990s I loved the spike of indie films coming through Sundance, and films like Pulp Fiction, Big Night, Sling Blade, Trees Lounge and Swingers. Had I said to my agents at the time that I wanted to do that stuff, they would have said, “You’re making a ton of money doing TV, and that’s what you’re going to do.” I went to school, quit acting for a while, and when I came back everyone wanted me to do another TV show and make more money. I didn’t want to. I made a decision that I was going to do only work that inspired me creatively, not what was supposed to be good for my career.”

On 500 Days of Summer: “The attitude of ‘He wants you so bad’ seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones, but I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is. He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life. A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.”

On romance: “Making checklists of things you’re looking for in a person is the numero uno thing you can do to guarantee you’ll be alone forever. You can’t meet someone and think, Do they have everything I want in a person? You just have to pay attention, keep your eyes open, listen to people and be present. I guess what I look for in a girl is someone who’s doing that too. Beyond that there’s not much more I would specify, because you never f#@*ing know, man.”

On people talking about how & Zooey Deschanel should just do it: “It’s awkward when people say that. Whatever. Zooey and I just think it’s funny. It is funny. We’ve been friends for 10 years. She loves movies, music and art, and she’s incredibly knowledgeable about that stuff. She’s turned me on to so many good movies and so much good music. It’s fun just to have conversations, watch movies with her and stuff like that.”

On time-travelling in Looper: “I’m a sucker for Rian Johnson’s thing. He’s the writer-director of Looper, and I also made Brick with him. He’s a dear friend and a brilliant filmmaker–a great writer, a great mind. Looper brings all the exhilaration and chemical feelings you hope to get from an action sci-fi movie. But Rian has also come up with a concept that will tickle your intellect while he tells a sincere story about the cyclical nature of violence and how violence begets violence. I love going to a good movie more than anything, and this movie just hits it.”

[From Playboy]

On that last note, I love that JGL is a true movie fan who loves movies “more than anything,” and I’m much more willing to be a fan of a total movie dork than someone who acts like they’re above it all, you know? Of course, now I’m going to change heart and entirely disagree with Regular Joe (sorry, dude) and echo the sentiments of Kaiser when she says that he and Zooey are absolutely perfect together. Hey, it’s true.

I love what he said about his 500 Days of Summer character. At first he seems like a little lost puppy dog looking for love, but he was bang on the money about him.

  2. Cookie says:

    Love him!

  3. BB says:

I don’t find his claim about pretty girls offensive, we can say the same about good looking men who are (not all but..) snob, inarticulate and with zero sense of humour. I find his site, his tweet more annoying and he seems a snob, and I hate 500 days and have no prblem with Zooey character who I find normal (a little like me in fact)

  4. Falula says:

Forget the 500 Days character, I have a huge crush on his 50/50 character. My husband had cancer in his early 20’s, when we were dating, and there were a lot of similarities – although I was nothing like his character’s girlfriend! I spent that entire movie wanting to give JGL a huge hug. Okay, and maybe some naked time.

    • Liberty says:

      oh me too! Soooo crush-worthy!!

      That said….aww, I wish he and Zooey….

I love the youtube when they sing.

    • GrnMtGirl says:

I Loved 50/50 and the way he played it.
I like JGL and think he & Zooey would be great together!!

  5. Riana says:

    Argh. He’s so frigging cute.

I must say I’m loving how much more open and sweet he is since he’s doing more magazine interviews lately and adjusting to being in the spotlight more.

But no no no to him and Zooey. They actually seem like total opposites. Zooey seems like she’d jump through hoops for public approval and Joseph’s been ignoring us for the better part of a decade.

  6. Justyna says:

I can’t figue out if I like him or not as a person. He is a good actor and most of the time seems like a cool guy, but I hate when he starts being preachy and tells his fans on Twitter and in interviews what they should think and how they should react: you are not allowed to crush on Tom from 500 days of Summer (last year he basically told his fan on Twitter she’s ridiculous by liking Tom and hating Summer, because she should have hated sefish Tom obviously), you shouldn’t make checklists, you should do this and not that. If he stated this as an opinion, I wouldn’t mind but he almost always uses this patronizing tone. And I particularly hated his rants about his amazing experiences with drugs and how people who hate drugs are not open-minded enough because it helps you being creative and it’s not at all addictive if you are smart like him and other BS like this.

  7. PrettyTarheel says:

He’s perfect for Zooey, except for that blind item about the dimpled actor and the gross actor having a fling. JGL was a strong contender for Dimples, with Franco/Pettyfer/LaBouf as guesses for Gross. Since it was Lainey, I lean toward Franco.

  8. GoodCapon says:

He can rock those three-piece suits like no other. Oh wait, I forgot about RDJ…

I saw a trailer for Premium Rush, I think the premise is okay but at the same time a bike messenger getting himself into all sorts of trouble tests my suspension of disbelief.

  9. Christina says:

I don’t think he would ever say anything bad about Anne Hathaway. She even joined him onstage to sing for one of his HitRecord projects in the past. They seem like they are friends.

  10. another nina says:

I wish he shared some titles of those incredibly good movies that Zooey had recommended to him…Haven’t seen a good movie for ages. He’s definitely an interesting personality and he is hot despite not being particular attractive…

    • mia girl says:

nina- Im no Zooey Dechannel, and movie enjoyment is subjective, but I just saw “Jeff, Who Lives At Home” and really enjoyed it.

  11. Marianne says:

I love JGL, but Premium Rush looks cheesy. I do however REALLY want to see Looper.

  12. ramona says:

Damn, that boy can wear a suit.

  13. Vivian says:

    Love him so much!

  14. Jenna says:

I love me some JGL but ‘Premium Rush’ looks so damn bad! ‘Looper’ on the other hand looks great! Can’t I just re-watch him in TDKR till then?

  15. Jordan says:

It was weird to read what he said he was looking for (or not) in a girl, I always assumed he was gay. I swear, all these hipsters are throwing my gaydar way off.

  16. L says:

Well Zooey’s had a new boyfriend for months (not JGL), so yea it has to be akward for their friendship and his friendship with her new guy. JGL seems like the type of guy who would want to be friends with his friends boyfriends.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2184584/Zooey-Deschanels-public-kiss-new-boyfriend-Jamie-Linden.html

But I agree with him about the checklist. And the character in 500 days of summer. That guy was cute but super needy.

  17. lucy2 says:

I think he’s a really interesting actor, but I’m not sure how good he comes off in interviews and such.

  18. Lizbet says:

Love what he had to say about finding someone; it’s so true that people like that think it’s a good thing. I’ve been pursued by guys claiming that I was what made them happy.

Gross. Ew. I don’t want that responsibility, dude; don’t put that on me. Be happy on your own and enjoy me, too, but don’t depend on me like that.

  19. I Choose Me says:

A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.

    Great interview!

This is why I love him. Articulate, grounded, savvy and a damn fine actor. Not to mention cute as hell.

    • Relli says:

      I KNOW RIGHT!

There are like a million people i woudl like to email that quote to, particularly those who found it pathetic that I wasn’t in a relationship most of my 20’s.

  20. AnnieGrey says:

I think Joseph is a nice person, but a narcissistic one. It might be difficult to be in a relationship with the man. You’d possibly never be able to be in a proper debate about anything. IDK, that’s the vibe I’m feeling.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I get that impression as well. His interviews are a lot less boring than most actors’ interviews but then again … he does seem a bit full of himself. And he seems to be quite judgmental. A guy who says things like he did about pretty girls is probably not someone I want to have deep discussions with. Because guys like that are usually the ones who, at some point in the discussion, will dismiss you simply because you’re a woman. At least in my experience. There are certain red flags that most of the time will let you know right away that you’re dealing with a bit of a d-bag. I’ve yet to meet a guy who makes one generalization about women, their intelligence, and their looks, and leaves it at that.

Having said that, I do enjoy him on screen, he has presence and charm.

  21. Veruca says:

Joey & Zooey are perfect! They could have a child and call it Bowie!

  22. Agrippina says:

He’s adorable, but it kind of annoys me that he allegedly thinks Anne Hathaway is a snob and he’s besties with Zooey Deschanel. I’ve never heard a bad thing said about Annie from an industry person, yet a friend of mine who worked on a movie with Zooey said she’s an entitled, insufferable bitch and everyone on set hated her. Bad taste on JGL’s part.

  23. lulu says:

He is lovely and am I the only one who can’t stand Zooey Deschanel? , she annoys me so much so for sure I agree with him they might be good friends but I don’t think they would work as a couple

  24. sup says:

I confess i also wanted them to get together even though I am not really a fan of either one. It was just because I saw how he looked at her in two videos and thought they’d be cute. But now reading how he thinks about his character in the movie and how he seems distant to the idea of dating Zooey I think he changed his mind and matured a lot. Some girls on ontd once posted a link to his tumblr where his girlfriend at the time was also listed. She was your stereotypical wannabe manic pixie dream girl. A Zooey fan, perhaps. And it seemed like he was dating her because she reminded him so much of Z., and he liked Z. because she reminded him so much of a certain ideal type he created in his mind, but it seems like he’s now grasping that it’s all a schtick, and image, and that there is no depth in such things beyond apperance. An image does not provide a healthy meaningful relationship, if anything, people who are obsessed with their outward appearances (and sorry but Z. strikes me as the type) are incapable of nurturing a long lasting relationship.

  25. judyjudy says:

    Swoon

  26. Rachel says:

In the interviews I’ve read, he comes off very poorly. Unfortunately, it’s only because of how intelligent, insightful and honest he is. And while I adore Anne Hathaway, I can definitely believe she’s an insufferable snob (though that might be a pot calling a kettle black – still doesn’t change the fact that it’s true). Despite that, he’s definitely someone I wish I was friends with or could have a single conversation with. I’d love to hear what he has to say.

  27. Auntie Git says:

Anyone else noticing how Zooey is the incredible shrinking woman on her show? I LOVED that she was “regular size” when it began, yet still looked so cute & stylish. Now she’s wearing yoga pants and looks like she’s lost 10 or 15 pounds.
I don’t know if it’s weird that this makes me sad, but it does. We certainly don’t need another skinny girl on TV! Give me regular any day.
