Christoph Waltz wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in ‘Django Unchained’

Christoph Waltz

Congratulations to Christoph Waltz! He has just won his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as dentist/bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained. This category was particularly hard to call this year since all of the nominees are previous Oscar winners. De Niro hasn’t won an Oscar since 1980 (Raging Bull) and hasn’t been nominated since 1992 (Cape Fear) until now (for Silver Linings Playbook), and some media outlets were really thinking that it would be De Niro’s year because he’s finally made something of a comeback to respectable movies.

But alas, that silver-tongued Austrian has thwarted the De Niro plan, and I couldn’t be more pleased for Waltz’s victory even though it’s unusual that the Academy would reward him so strongly again merely three years after his first Oscar for Inglourious Basterds. It’s nice to see that villains aren’t the only ones rewarded in this category because his Schultz character was such a good guy.

Christoph Waltz

Once onstage, Christoph immediately gave “my respect” to all his fellow nominees (and his gesture was followed by much applause). He kept his speech short and sweet, but he made a point to say that “My unlimited gratitude goes to Dr. King Schultz … and, of course, his creator, Quentin Tarantino.” He and QT are quite a team, and hopefully, QT will win for Best Original Screenplay later tonight. Hurray for Christoph and Quentin!

Update: Quentin won too! He was so pleased and declared this year “the year of the writers.” Man, he’s going to get so baked tonight.

Love him and loved his speech. He is so gracious! He seems like such a nice person.

  2. Suze says:

Sweet sweet speech. He deserved the award, he killed that role.

    • I agree. He seems so genuine and he was indeed great as Dr. King Shultz. He was my favorite performance in “Django (followed closely by Samuel L. Jackson). I know many wanted Leo to get nominated but his role was just too campy for me.

    • Liv says:

Totally agree, he was brilliant! His absence after his character was shot was like the elephant in the room! That’s how good he is.

  3. cubfan34 says:

    Upset.

    • yoon says:

I love Christoph and I felt that his Oscar for Hans Landa was well deserved. HOWEVER. This time around? It should’ve gone to Leo, hands down.

I couldn’t see him as anyone other than Hans Landa in Django. Couldn’t get past it. I love him, he’s one of my favourites, but I’m still really sad that Leo didn’t even get a nomination. I feel like this Oscar was something that should’ve been given to him tonight. Bummed.

      • Miss M says:

It should’ve gone to Leo. Unfortunately, the academy will never nominate him.

      • amilu says:

No way. Leo was good (a welcome departure from his roles of late), but Waltz was a phenom in Django. He was the best part of the movie.

    • Mireia says:

To me Waltz should have been nominated as Best Actor and Leo as Best Supporting. Dr. Schultz was the movie’s co-lead.

  4. Suze says:

    The Marisa Tomei of 2013!

    Although, not really.

  5. kibbles says:

Congrats to Waltz. I was hoping he’d win. I like DeNiro but I feel the same way about his nomination as I do with Jennifer Lawrence’s nomination. Both are great actors but do not deserve the Oscar for their performances in SLP. The only legit person in SLP for the Oscar would have been Bradley Cooper.

      +100000000000000000000000

    • Reese says:

YES. Exactly. Thank you. Lawrence and Weavers performances were incredibly overrated in the film. Cooper and DeNiro were the only worthy ones IMO. Which I didn’t expect as I’m not a very big fan of Coopers.

  6. Ginger says:

I’m happy he won because it was surprising and and unusual choice. I love him…awesome actor!

  7. SunnySide says:

Yay! I was hoping he’d win. I just love him!

  8. hayley says:

so well deserved. he is such an incredible actor.

  9. Mr.Smurf says:

Just so you celebitches know, I’m going to be up all night. I’m gonna check all night, praying to Jesus that annE doesn’t win, and if she does I’m gonna stage a mutiny at home and school.

Congrats to Waltz! He deserved it just for the line and delivery of “I couldn’t resist.”…with a huge grin on his face before he was shot.

Anyone who hasn’t seen Django Unchained should. He was amazing!!! Especially Leonardo DiCaprio. I haven’t seen all of his movies, but that was hands down one of the best movie villain performances I’ve ever seen. He made Candie human, not just a straight caricature. The scene when he finds out that Django and Schultz were screwing him over was classic and great. I’m shocked Leo wasn’t nominated this year for it.

    • SunnySide says:

I’m with you on Anne Hathaway…. I really hope she doesn’t get it! She wasn’t in the movie that long and her campaign has been OBNOXIOUS!

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

Anne is so pregnant. Usually I hate the speculation but there’s no way she’s not. So unlike her to go this long, let alone awards season without form fitting clothes and she always looks flushed.

  10. DemoCat827 says:

So happy he won. Richly deserved!

  11. MG says:

Didn’t see the movie but he made a nice speech. I was hoping TLJ would win though.

  12. T.Fanty says:

I want QT to win something. He should have a directing Oscar by now.

    • allons -y alonso says:

+ ∞ !!!! I love QT. Christoph Waltz (my Austrian silver fox) deserved to win Best Supporting Actor. A bit sad that Leo didn’t get a nom too. Calvin Candie was an interesting character.

      • T.Fanty says:

I agree – and he stepped out of the box, too, which is a brave choice. I just think that QT is LONG overdue for Oscar recognition. Like him or hate him, he is consistently original and his work, while not subtle, is nuanced in so many ways.

      • allons -y alonso says:

I like QT for his originality. Yes, he is massively in love with his own writing, but it’s good and he doesn’t apologise for it.

      • T.Fanty says:

To be fair, I would be, if I wrote like that. I don’t think it’s arrogance if you actually are as good as you think you are (*side eye to James Franco*).

      • allons -y alonso says:

Absolutely he shouldn’t. I love his writing. πŸ™‚
HA! I was thinking the same thing – James Franco will never be as clever as QT. Not even in his wildest wet dreams.

  13. Morgan says:

Yay!! Nate Silver can suck it,I knew Cristoph Waltz would take this one. He was phenomenal in Django!!

  14. Samigirl says:

So attracted to this man! So happy for his win!

  15. pretty says:

My one and only wish is Anne Hathaway doesn’t win … please please…

  16. booboocita says:

Y’all can keep your Eddie Redmaynes and other young totty … I’ll take a silver fox any day over that. Yay, Christof!

  17. T.Fanty says:

Note to CJZ: Contrary to what Rhianna may preach, stroking oneself in public does not constitute dancing.

  18. Gelina says:

Congratulations to him! He was fantastic in “Django Unchained”.

  19. bluhare says:

He looks like an intellectual Ted Danson in that photo. πŸ™‚

  20. two_seconds_ago says:

Oh God! AnnE just won! Ugh!

    • allons -y alonso says:

oh, s**t. I live in a world where AnnE Hathaway has an Oscar and Amy Adams doesn’t. DAMN IT!

      • Mr.Smurf says:

        +10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000!!!

Why God? Why? I was a good girl today, went to church and didn’t fall asleep and everything. Is this my punishment for not liking my pastor?
The only way that there is a silver lining is to laugh at her desperate, try hard, faux graciousness and surprise over and over again. Just like her golden globe debacle. Anyone know if Hugh’s wife gave her a bitchface, or if she tried to hug up on Hugh AGAIN?
        Please respond.

    • lisa2 says:

      LOL..

everybody knew Anne was going to win. I think it is best to just accept and move on.

But funny how upset people are. Now you all get to see her talk about the win all week.

and let me say. I saw Anne’s Mom being interviewed and after listening to her..
“When I first knew Anne had It” well it is quite understandable where Anne gets it from. The Acorn and the Tree

  21. Mr.Smurf says:

Get a look at this flow chart that The Soup made, on what annE’s acceptance speech would be:

  22. apsutter says:

Talk about a dark horse for the outside win!! I’m happy for him, he’s an amazing actor and he was my favorite part of Django.

  23. F5 says:

He was great in Django.. the only good thing about the movie.

  24. Jm says:

I know he’s just a wee little man but I have such a crush on him . . . so cute!

  25. TC says:

Mesmerising performance in Django Unchained. Well done.

  26. Displeased says:

    Waltz should NOT have won.

Come on people, your judgement is clouded by favouritism. Waltz’s character in Django was simply too straightforward and didn’t require anything groundbreaking at all. On top of that Waltz’s beard covered up any facial expression and emotion that he might have been showing. Even I could have pulled off that role. You people are confusing a decent character with good acting. L. Jackson for his self-hating house slave performance was more deserving. Leo also didn’t impress that much, but it’s mot him, it’s the role that didn’t require anything more from him.

  27. NYC_girl says:

LOVE him, and enjoyed him in the film, but I don’t know if he should have won. He was awesome in “Carnage,” I recommend that. He plays a major jerk married to Kate Winslet.

  28. truthful says:

    VERY much well deserved!!!

    yipppeee!

  29. Diana says:

I was so torned between him and PSH but I was so happy to see him win and such sweet speach. congrats to him!
