Blake Lively: ‘Work is important, but my greatest passion is my personal life’

Here is the long-awaited cover of the September issue of Lucky. I say “long-awaited” because we saw candid photos from the New York City photo shoot back in May, and because I actually do want to see how the magazine has re-booted itself under the leadership of Anna Wintour (Wintour was made “Artistic Director for Conde Nast” this past spring). The cover is pretty, and it’s not as schizophrenic as the old, text-heavy Lucky covers used to be. The image of Blake is striking and it reminds me a lot of… like, 1990s magazines for young women. Not so much Seventeen, but definitely Jane and Sassy (sigh… nostalgia). Anyway, some highlights from Blake’s interview:

Cover-line: “I don’t have a stylist. I trust myself.”

On Ryan’s style: “I’m very lucky to be with someone who has better taste than me. We influence each other in different ways.”

Her married style: “I was recently asked how my style has changed since I got married, as if I was living under some sort of dictatorship. I should hope I dress differently at 25 than I did when I graduated high school. I hope I never stop changing.”

The immediate gratification of her marriage: “With film and TV, you don’t see the results for months. Building a home, you get immediate gratification.”

Happy wife: “Work is important, but my greatest passion is my personal life.”

She has “princess days”: “That could call for wearing something totally inappropriate. Like a beaded purse and a gorgeous pair of crystal heels just to go to the grocery store.”

[From The Mail]

I haven’t noticed much of a difference in how Blake dresses now that she’s married. Her style has always been hit-or-miss as far as I’m concerned – the biggest evolution of her style that I can see is that she’s been paying more attention to the fit and tailoring of her clothes, which is good because she used to wear stuff that was much too tight. As for her continuing insistence on not having a stylist – I feel the same way about Duchess Kate’s insistence on not having a stylist or personal shopper or someone: if you’re in the public eye, if you’re making public appearances all the time, why would you want to waste all of that valuable time going from store to store and shopping all day long when it would just be easier to pay someone to do that for you?

As for her whole “my greatest passion is my personal life” thing… I eyerolled at that, did anyone else? But I’m very cynical, I guess. Maybe I just don’t “get” how deep their love is. Obviously.

I don’t think by saying she doesn’t have a stylist she is saying that she shops for all her clothes. I’m sure she has people find clothes for her. And designers send her clothes. She just wants us to know that she is heading the show.

    • Liv says:

Yep. I think it would be actually better for her to hire a stylist, she has not much sense for fashion.

    • L says:

i don’t understand why she always says, “i don’t have a stylist.” i personally know someone who’s sister has styled her on numerous occasions, such as the MET gala. pretty much anytime she looks half decent.

      • Hannah says:

Hmmmm, what an interesting lie then. Not to be a douche but that person should out her. It’s bullshit to claim that she is responsible for her business (lookin’ pretty) when clearly it’s not accurate. She also says she does her own hair and makeup but people have also ratted her out for that too.

I used to have a soft spot for her but I really don’t do blatant falsehoods. give these other people the credit they deserve. And for the record, I usually always love what she wears.

      • mercy says:

I’m pretty sure Gucci took care of her Met look last time, and Chanel the previous year she went. The Chanel look was her best. The Gucci gown was not bad, but some of the details were off (like that ugly two-tone manicure).

      • Bridget says:

Loophole. She doesn’t hire them, the styist is from the fashion house, or something like that. Kind of like bragging about not having a nanny, but actually having a nurse or something.

    • mercy says:

She has credited style.com for making it easy to find what she wants and said she asks people for advice about what works together. And I’m sure for major fashion events like the Met she demured to the fashion houses she represented at the time (Chanel, Gucci).

  2. Anna says:

OOOH. I like Princess Days. I’ve done Princess Days. Tho in Moscow and NYC alike you can walk down the street in an evening gown and everyone is just like ‘eh’ *shrug*.

    • susiecue says:

I freely admit that I play dress up from time to time too, so I can’t hate on her for that.

  3. treefingers says:

    Yuck.
It’s weird, she sounds eerily like a vacuous Stepford Wife.

    • gefeylich says:

The operative word being “vacuous.” I don’t think there’s a more boring, colorless “actress” out there. Boobs Legsly can’t act, she has dime-a-dozen looks, her status as a “fashion icon” is completely manufactured by her PR people because she has no taste – the list goes on and on.

I’ve never liked Ryan Reynolds, but he confirmed that he’s a total idiot when he married her. Even the insufferable Alanis Morissette would have been a better choice.

  4. Elodie says:

…but what does she mean by “work” though??? She has ZERO project since Gossip Girl…

    • deehunny says:

I don’t know when gossip girl ended because I never watched it, but she was in Savages. Which was terrible. Selma Hyack stole the show and it was still just awful.

  5. tracking says:

They are pretty together but both seem rather shallow and dumb. I have a feeling they’ll both be forgotten in five years. Hope they’re off having cute kiddos and investing their Hollywood $$–and don’t care!

  6. Holly says:

Oddly, I absolutely prefer her comments about her relationship/personal life gratification to Olivia Wilde’s “Kenyan sex” (x1000).

I find Ryan and Blake a less vacuous couple and I’m shocked!

    • mimi says:

      @ Holly

I agree with everything you said. I’ll gladly take Blake and Ryan over Olivia and Jason every time!

      • Camille (TheOriginal) says:

Add me to the group too, I would happily take these two over J & O any day as well!

    • mercy says:

LOL I can only imagine what the reaction would be to Blake and Ryan if they talked like that.

  7. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Although I do think Blake is budget and try hard, I do like that she, as a young person, instead of just saying in every interview that she wanted to get married to a nice guy, have kids, and all that jazz….she went out and did it. And she did it with a stable guy-no drama, you know, relatively in Hollywood….she’s not dating someone who was a womanizer or a fameho….I admire that she was honest/said what she wanted.

I think too many young actors/actresses, hell Cumby’s an example of this now, say that they want to have a family, have a regular, healthy relationship-but then don’t want to put the time into it to make it a nice, healthy relationship. It’s as if they think you just magically stay together…

    • Lindy79 says:

If rumours are to be believed, its one of the reasons Ryan and Scarlett split.
They were both focused on career and neither wanted to take a back seat.

    • Talie says:

It’s true, a lot of them just don’t have the lifestyles fit for a healthy marriage. And it’s rare to see any compromise because usually both actors want to strike while the iron’s hot.

I do wonder how Ryan’s recent bad fortune is affecting them though.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That’s what I don’t understand. If you don’t want to have to choose between your career and your partner, then guess what? Don’t get a partner…employ bootycall. Say specifically in interviews that you are not seeing anyone serious right now. Done. If you do want a partner, then pick your roles carefully, take time off. I think generally, if you’re a good actor/actress, there will always be film roles for you to do.

  8. Tess says:

She usually looks super tacky and cheap so I believe the stylist line. It’s also good to see she’s still insufferable.

  9. ldub says:

    love love LOVE this cover!
it’s a mash-up of Jane with Vogue “styling”.

i also like blake. there, i said it. wanna fight about it?

    • Anguishedcorn says:

I do too…we can stand together against the onslaught.

      • ldub says:

yes. yes we can. *grabs hand*

      • menlisa says:

        I’m joining you guys!

        *Passes shields around*

      • mercy says:

Joining in! I’ve liked her since the Sisterhood, Elvis and Anabelle, Pippa Lee, and even some Gossip Girl season 1, before the show went to pot. She was a blast in Hick as well, though I can’t recommend the movie.

She’s always struck me as pretty grounded, especially for a young woman who went from high school to traveling in such high-flying circles almost overnight. Maybe that’s one reason why Wintour, Louboutin, Lagerfeld and other power players took such a liking to her.

    • Anna says:

      I’m with y’all.

    • Amelia says:

I’m in, too. I used to quite dislike Blake, but now I just think she’s a sweetheart.
Don’t like gerbil-face, though. He gives me mean vibes.

    • whipmyhair says:

I have a mild obession with her voice. I watch gossip girl to hear her speak.

And also the clothes. So pretty! So shiny!

      • sparrot says:

@Whipmyhair- I also think I have a mild obsession with her voice. I can’t decide if I Iike it or not. Maybe both? I can see where others find it annoying, but at the same time…its a little adorable. Unique, at least.

    • Shanz says:

I’d make cupcakes with her. 🙂

  10. Melissa says:

There’s really nothing new under the sun. This is the same interview Blake has been giving for the past few years; this time, a bit more underwhelming than usual.

  11. Katie says:

“Work is important, but my greatest passion is jumping from man to man until I can find one who will marry me, play the paparazzi game with me, and make me half of a Hollywood power couple so everyone forgets those pesky Ben Affleck rumors.”

Fixed that for you, Blake. Also, Ryan Reynolds is rumored to be a huge douchebag, so congrats on your starter marriage!

    • Jayna says:

Wow. Most women in their early twenties are dating a lot and most want a serious relationship especially by mid twenties and recognize when they find a guy who appreciates and loves them and vice versa. That’s called life experience and maturing.

Forget the pesky Ben rumours? Like she cares about rag mags that make up a ton of gossip every day to fill their pages with only a little truth in all of them. Ben was(writer?), director, and lead actor in the action movie. His wife and kids were with him and he admitted he was stretched really thin on the movie, obssessing over everything, and stressed to make the movie a success, digging his career out of the hole and prove not a one-time fluke as a director. Why do people believe every single rumor in gossip rages? I believe Ben is capable of cheating. I just don’t believe it happened at that time in his life. His career was the most important thing then, rebuilding it, and a young family still, and Jen’s support was crucial then and why he moved the family to Boston for that period. Blake had a very small role in the movie, and I doubt was even there that long for the shooting of her scenes.

      • mercy says:

        +1 Well said!

      • Lena says:

+100 Jayna! Thanks for making sense unlike many on here who regurgitate tabloid lies on and on without a shred of evidence, confusing what they want to be true with the actual truth.

    • Jules says:

He managed to find someone with even less talent than ScarJo, but is younger with newer faker fun-bags.

  12. Gretchen says:

Meh, if I’d read this like 5-10 years ago I would also have eye rolled, but I dunno. I work, but have never been a careerist and due to the current economy I am not able to work in the field of my passion anyway, so…I get what she means.

Work is not where I gain fulfilment, being happy and living with a happy husband and happy cats and having good friendships are what is really important to me. I don’t think that’s particularly stepford-y

    • Jayna says:

That’s not stepfordy. A Stepford wife is entirely different. Perfection at all times, no opinions, mirroring her husband’s beliefs, living to make the husband happy with no identity of their own, and probably shopping all the time for material things to fill the hole in them.

      • Shaundrah says:

Uhhh… your OTT defences of Blake Lively are kind of creepy.

How in the hell would you KNOW that she didn’t bang Ben Affleck?

    • whipmyhair says:

I just think it’s weird that her “personal life” Is her passion. Not her husband, family, friends or cupcakes.

I understand what she’s saying and totally agree, but she has to work on her wording.

  13. Jayna says:

I’ve always liked her. No, she didn’t screw Ben. The way a lot of these people look that actually use stylists, I would say she’s doing fine. I think they that a strong chance that will be married forever out of most of the newlyweds in celebrityland.

  14. Barrett says:

Ha. Where the hell is she looking? She looks odd, stunned on that lucky cover.

    • mercy says:

Of all the happy shots, they used the one where she looks like a frightened rabbit. I don’t get it, but it is a big change from their previous covers, where practically everyone sported mile-wide smiles.

  15. SmokeyBlues says:

I like her and I get what she I saying. I am recently married, also, and it is a special time when you are establishing a home and creating your own family. It takes passion and focus and sometimes I feel more focused on my home life than on work. I’m not a stepford wife, either! Maybe a spoiled wife, lol. I’m tired of feminism going too far and making some women, who have a natural inclination for the domestic, feel inferior. Every family needs someone to be at the core of the home and to take domesticity seriously in order for that family to be happy and healthy, and some women want that role very sincerely. I’m one of them and I think Blake is, too 🙂

    • Gia says:

I am picking up what you are laying down!

    • Bodhi says:

Feminism is about women finding fulfillment in whatever role they chose, be it having a career or staying at home or a combo of the 2. Its about a woman being able to CHOSE her role, rather than have it foisted on her

    • Bijlee says:

Good for you! Enjoy it. I think Blake is better suited to life as a baker. You know one of those wedding cake decorators too. She should go back to baking school. I want cake so bad now.

  16. lisa says:

they contoured away too much of her nose in the cover shot, it looks like it would be hard to breathe with it

    • Tess says:

That’s actually just the way the nose she bought looks. She has a completely different face than she used to.

    • mercy says:

Too much photoshop, agreed. The candid pics are much better.

  17. poppy says:

she ought to go to school and get an education if she’s going to be giving home ec lessons indefinitely. at least appear somewhat intelligent. her minions will need clarification re: crystal encrusted, lucite, or literally crystal heels when grocery shopping.
she doesn’t look the type to age well without a lot of surgical help.
she’s at best goop 2.0 without half the pretension.

    • mercy says:

If she spoke in that much detail, she would be accused of talking like Goop herself LOL.

It would be awesome if she went back to school. It would set a great example for young girls, and think of all the sidewalk fashion ops. 😉

  18. Sunsetsnow says:

I like her! I hope that letting her career take a backseat for her marriage does not backfire and they end up divorced. Her peak time is right now and she is not taking advantage of it. Good luck to her!

  19. Gia says:

I get it. I have a good job, and I like it but my ‘passion’ is also my family. I would be lost without them. Maybe she, like me, got quickly over the single, social life. Lots of booze and dinners and free time. I was bored to death years before I had a family but had to wait for my husband to get there too 🙂 I’m not into forcing someone to be a parent before they’re ready.

  20. tealily says:

“My greatest passion is my personal life…” what the hell does that even mean?? I mean, isn’t that everyone’s “greatest passion?” Usually there are “greatest passions” within your personal life. It just strikes me as a really weird thing to say and makes me feel like she is probably, actually obsessed with work…

  21. jacquie109 says:

Thank goodness I’m not the only one who likes her. Yes she’s young but she’s intelligent enough to know what it takes to make a family work. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a homemaker just like there is nothing wrong with wanting to be a lawyer who works 80hrs a week, if you love what you do then good on you, at least she knows what makes her happy and I’m positive they could both quit their jobs and live off the money they’ve both made happily for the rest of their lives, so if that’s what she wants then she deserves to do it.

  22. Mia 4S says:

OK so people are actually buying all this? So if David Russell had called with a lead in American Hustle or Nolan had called with a part in Intersteller she would have declined and stayed home to bake cookies? Riiigghht. She’s making the best of what she has and where she’s at. It’s not a bad idea at all but let’s not canonize a domestic saint just yet.

The next year will be very telling. Something in their game will have to change because Ryan’s career is Arctic ice cold.

    • mercy says:

Yes, because big directors often just call up young actors and offer them parts like that? Not really. Getting those kinds of offers is a job in and of itself. Young actors who started out far younger and with far more starry film careers than Blake’s have been relegated to the sidelines before and had to hustle and claw their way back into supporting roles, if they’re lucky, often at great expense to their personal development. They probably have to want stardom badly enough to go through all of that. Maybe Blake had enough. She’s talked about her other interests and having a family for a long time.

  23. diva says:

Her personal life has to be her passion because she isn’t getting any work. The way Ryan’s movies have been doing in the box office he’s work may be slowing down too

  24. Bodhi says:

I can’t stand her, but it has nothing to do with her professed desire to be a housewife (I don’t give a shit what women do, as long as it was their CHOICE.)

I think it would be HILARIOUS if she styles herself as GOOP 2.0 or a Jessica Alba 2.0 after she has those kids she talks about

  25. Annabelle says:

I love my job and worked my butt off in school to get it, but at the end of the day my personal life is my passion. No eyerolls for Blake from me.

  26. Happy21 says:

I really like her and I also believe that her home and her personal life IS that important to her. She’s never made it a secret that she is a family type person. I hope her and gerbil-face have a long happy life together with many, many babies.

  27. user00005 says:

Good for her, because she is a terrible actress but looks like a dynamite in the bedroom just like her mundane husband. Maybe she should quit acting and become an ‘actress’ similar to Jennifer Garner – a housewife who did some movies at some point.

So she bombs in movies, but a bomb between the sheets.

  28. Relli says:

What no cupcake talk, gawd B you are really slipping don’t you know your interview formula (because I sure do). It’s style chat, vague relationship terms and then domestic goddess with a side of cake.

This interview needs more cake talk.

BTW: SHE is SOOOOOOO GOOP 2.0 been saying that for years, lets hope she doesn’t discover the joys of flat ironing though, does not do favors for the nose area.

  29. OriginallyBlue says:

Why is she on the front of this magazine? Not trying to snark but this girl has nothing going on, so why the interview?

    • mercy says:

It’s Anna Wintour-protégé Eva Chen’s first issue as editor-in-chief of Lucky. Blake’s covers did well for other mags last year and they’re hoping for the same. She hasn’t done any other shoots this year except for Gucci.

  30. St says:

Honey you have no career. Your 15 minutes of fame went off pretty quickly.

  31. mrsmc says:

Who really cares if she doesn’t have a stylist she isn’t the only one. Also I get the feeling that this girl is not ready to have kids with her husband and you can tell by his interviews that he is ready to start a family while he is still in his thirties. So if she doesn’t start producing in like another year or so there could be trouble, and she might as well because she is not a good actress. Jennifer Lawrence she is not.

  32. Bridget says:

Blake clearly had fantastic representation for her acting career, but I cannot imagine how much she had to work and hustle just to be a part of the conversation (thats not even taking into account any rumors). It looks exhausting, and I actually respect Blake more for choosing to step away for a while. She’s an interesting case because she’s clearly got personal charisma and has made a ton of contacts with the people that she’s worked with, including some very powerful people, but she just doesn’t fit quite right in most of her onscreen work.

  33. testington` says:

since when is she 40? What is that cover?

  34. Hannah says:

25?! She’s got to be kidding. I think she is at least 34.
