Chiwetel Ejiofor keeps getting serious, when will the press focus on how hot he is?

wenn20774292
Vanity Fair has a new brief profile and long video interview with actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, whose name I’m finally learning to pronounce. (It sounds just like it’s written.) As Kaiser has mentioned, I have a deep crush on this man, but it’s complicated for me. After seeing 12 Years a Slave, I get butterflies mixed with sadness when I see him. I’ve never been as affected by a movie, or by a performance, as I was by Ejiofor in 12 Years. That’s down to Steve McQueen’s excellent direction coupled with how masterfully Ejiofor played the part. You see yourself and your own struggles in his expressive eyes, and it’s heartbreaking. So now I have to watch a bunch of Ejiofor’s other movies so I don’t always associate him with the tragic yet triumphant Solomon Northup.

In interviews, Ejiofor comes across as very professional and committed to his craft. He’s matter-of-fact about it and isn’t getting puffed up about all the accolades he’s getting. Somehow he seems above speculation about his personal life. It’s not that he thinks he’s too good to gossip about at all. It’s just that during an interview with the man who gave one of the most powerful performances of all time, in one of the best movies of all time, it seems ridiculous to ask if he’s seeing anyone. (I was able to find out that he used to date Naomie Harris and is currently with a woman named Sari Mercer. He likes redheads, yay!)

It’s reassuring to me that he’s getting fashion spreads with Kate Moss, although I want to see him touted more as a heartthrob. Ejiofor has been working steadily for years, but this is his real breakout role and I do think he should be getting more photo spreads and people gushing over him. So I’m doing my part!

Vanity Fair has a video interview with Ejiofor that is well worth watching. There are spoilers, so be aware if you haven’t seen 12 Years yet. One of the most moving sections is at about 6:00 in, when Ejiofor talks about how his own personal history helped him relate to his character. His parents emigrated from Nigeria to the UK before he was born. People from his parents’ same Ibo ethnic group were kidnapped into slavery, which he learned while visiting a slave museum in Nigeria. Here’s what he said of the experience, and of the role:

On connecting to his character
It was a very emotional moment to know that I was going to go on the same destination as people who were leaving there. A lot of those people, a lot of Ibos – and I’m Ibo, left that area to go to Louisiana (where 12 Years was set and filmed) at that point. It was coincidence that I was there, but it was a very interesting way to start the process, for going somewhere and having plantain and okra and then going to New Orleans and having plantain and okra and thinking ‘all these things are very connected.’

On if he’s all-in method or can leave his character
With something like this… it just had to be a practical thing… Like ok, so ‘I need a violin teacher.’ I wanted to get down to Louisiana, I wanted to get down to the plantations… get a real feel for the place. I wanted to take a look at the cotton picking, trying to figure out the timber stuff, the cutting down of the trees… obviously the sugar cane. The industry of it all was very important to me, just to figure that out.

On what he found out about his character’s work
It opens up certain things to you that you can’t even consider until you’re there. I realized that when you’re chopping down trees, there’s a catharsis in that kind of physical labor. You’re reminded of your own physicality and humanness within the context of that and again with sugarcane… picking cotton is the complete opposite. There’s no catharsis in it, there’s nothing. Just burning sunshine, 108 degrees on the first day on the Epps plantation, and it lends itself to that kind of surreal insanity that the Epps plantation has. Your only sounds are the crack of the whip in the distance, maybe somebody passing out. It’s a different reality. That’s why in the story, each plantation has its own psychology and some of the psychology comes from the work that’s being done. I could never have put that together until going out there.

[From video interview on Vanity Fair]

I love how pragmatic and thoughtful he is, and how he approached the role in a systematic way by experiencing his character’s work. Ejiofor kept praising Steve McQueen for helping both immerse the actors, and the audience, in the experience of slavery. The more I learn about Ejiofor, the more I admire him and find him fascinating. I still want to know what he does in his free time, but I can fill in the details. For now there’s so much richness in this film and the story that I understand why everyone is focusing on it. There will be time to learn more about Ejiofor in the lead up to the Oscars.

Who is that gorgeous woman standing next to him…. is all I want to know.

    • Celebitchy says:

That’s his girlfriend, Sari Mercer, I think she’s a model.

      • DawnOfDagon says:

Cheers for that. She looks like a very soft and extremely pretty version of what Carla Bruni’s face would look like had she not madamised herself to oblivion!

    • Jac says:

Sari Mercer, I went to high school with her in British Columbia, Canada. Truly one of the sweetest, most soft spoken women I’ve ever met. She’d be 27 now. 🙂

      • T.C. says:

I thought she was British. She is beautiful with a healthy weight. Chiwetel looks very dashing. They look good together. Before her was Naomie Harris. The man has good taste in women.

      • Liv says:

Good for him, he seems very nice too.

  2. Sandy says:

He was fantastic in Kinky Boots. Love this guy!

    • Celebitchy says:

OOh I will watch that one, thanks!

      • Han says:

You should watch Dirty pretty things too if you haven’t already!! In my opinion his best role until 12 years. Its got audrey tatou in it. He is also in children of men which is another great movie!

      • T.C. says:

Check him out in Love Actually, Children of Men and Salt with Angelina Jolie CB.

      • Yup, Me says:

And Talk to Me with Don Cheadle, which was amazing, as well.

    • V4Real says:

I remember him from Amistad and Love Actually. He also played one of the most likeable bad guys in Serenity. Loved him in Salt as well; he got to work with Angelina, yeah. 2012 wasn’t a great movie but it was worth it to see him.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ooohhhhh….That’s where I’ve seen him – Love Actually. Thank you, that was driving me crazy. He’s beautiful. And smart, don’t forget smart.

    • Chicagogurl says:

I love kinky boots. He manages to just ooze sex, confidence and vulnerability and the movie is adorable. I saw the broadway adaptation a yr ago and didn’t love it as much as the movie because of him.

  3. blue marie says:

He’s hot for sure, but I would rather him be known for his work rather than his looks. Having said that, if he were to end up Bond all bets are off cause that man can wear the hell out of a suit. (I’m quite contradictory this morning)

    • Simmie says:

He’s so talented there is probably very little danger in him being known for looks rather than abilities.

And hell yes to the Bond thing. I hate to think of the time when it won’t be Daniel Craig anymore but Chiwetel would ease the transition.

    • M.A.F. says:

Here here. Leave the heartthrob stuff to the teens and early twenties something’s. Knowing too much about an actors background could cloud your viewing.

      • Violeta says:

“Leave the heartthrob stuff to the teens and early twenties something’s.”…

There are 30+ something Bieber/One Direction/Hiddleston/Cumberbatch etc. fans out there that beg to differ… thus it can happen at any age 😉

  4. Lisa says:

You can pick up the slack for the rest of the press.

  5. eliza says:

Just like with Cumberbatch I do not see the hot in this actor. He is a solid actor but I cannot see the hot. I am anxious to see this much talked about movie though. It has gotten such great reviews.

  6. Violeta says:

Well, Chiwetel is an actor’s actor, he’s all about his craft, and even more attractive that he keeps his life private (the most known was with Naomie Harris, they made one amazing couple!), and the mystery is great, like the public found out he has a girlfriend once he brought her on the red carpet, but that’s about it, no fuss, no talking about her in interviews, she’s just there she exists, no more no less, it’s known he’s a well spoken, intelligent man. Thus so far hot or what else he does in his free time, it’s for the likes of People magazine and us readers here to fantasize/speculate/gossip about so… 😉

    • V4Real says:

But we also have to realize that Chiwetel wasn’t one of those actors that the media wanted to know about. He’s not like a Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington or Clooney. No one was beating down his door trying to find out personal things about him. He was just another actor the press (gossip mags included) wasn’t interested in. Now that he is in a stand out role and might be nominated for an Oscar I bet his personal life becomes more public because now the media will view him as a star, not just an actor. There are a lot of great actors out there like Chiwetel but they just don’t have the popularity of their more famous peers. Take Terrence Howard for example, a lot of people and even some other actors were not familiar with him until Crash and his breakout and Oscar nominated role Hustle and Flow. After that for awhile he became a media sensation, good or bad.

      • Violeta says:

Indeed everyone has their breakthrough role but there is still a difference with being a movie star vs being a hot actor vs being an actor, and Chiwetel is an actor’s actor, he’s always been known within the acting peers circles, he’s garnered 3 GG nods, a L. Olivier win, BAFTA nod, BIFA win etc, he is very much respected as the actor’s actor and his breakthrough in TYAS is still seen as the actor’s actor, it’s not about “oh wow he’s so sexy he’s so dreamy etc.” even though yes some are curious about him at some point, but he inspires more respect as an actor rather than a slightly opposite example being Idris Elba, although a GG winner he is much more known for his sex appeal (and plays with it at times, just see his FB page, interviews etc) even though he’s a very good actor as well. Denzel Washington has always kept some mystery and up to these days he’s very rarely seen hitting the tabloids pages, he’s mostly known as the actor/movie star. Terrence Howard had he not been Oscar nominated it probably wouldn’t have changed anything to his character, which is too bad because he’s actually a good actor. Or even Cillian Murphy, another solid actor and yet he barely makes it into the tabloids, it’s all down to how they manage it.

      • V4Real says:

Yes I’m aware of his accolades as I am a fan but that still doesn’t change what I stated earlier. Chiwetel is not one of those actors that the tabloids or media are interested in on a wide scope. If they were they would have been printing stories about him a long time ago and he would fall victim to the paps as well. Even as private as he maybe, if the media wants to start a buzz about you, they could. Look at the high profile celebs that they have ran stories about that were probably untrue. Don’t you think if they were interested in Chiwetel they would do the same to him? Plus to be honest mainstream tabloids doesn’t always run stories about Black entertainers unless they are extremely popular. You said Denzel was able to keep a lot of things private, I guess you haven’t been reading any of the Black media sources, it’s out there about Denzel just not in The Enquirer or Star Mag.

      • Violeta says:

Assumptions my dear, I know about Denzel Washington marital problems and other anecdotes, I simply didn’t go into details, because on a much wider and bigger scale, they are literally non existent next to his popularity as an actor, he’s still very much private, being one of the most known Black actors out there, compare him to the likes of Chris rock, Terrence Howard and other Kanye West, Jay-Z, Jamie Foxx who hit the tabloids covers controversy wise (whether Black media source or else) much more covered and surpassed Denzel on that one.

And now you are confusing me here, in your 1st post you stated “Now that he is in a stand out role and might be nominated for an Oscar I bet his personal life becomes more public because now the media will view him as a star, not just an actor” – meaning that the media will track his privacy – and now you write “Chiwetel is not one of those actors that the tabloids or media are interested in on a wide scope. If they were they would have been printing stories about him a long time ago and he would fall victim to the paps as well. Even as private as he maybe, if the media wants to start a buzz about you, they could.” – meaning that they don’t because they aren’t interested – …Eh?

Like I said, Chiwetel is an actor’s actor, thus there aren’t any gossip about him, unless now he wants to go off the rails private life wise.

      • Han says:

I don’t really think its about wether the media wants to know. Sure black actors are not as marketable as white actor thats just a fact. But on the other hand the media weren’t screaming for Tom Hiddleston impersonations. He chose to present himself in that manner and feed his own publicity. Its a choice in how you want to come across. Hiddleston and certain actors like franco love their attention. Others like Phoneix , Day lewis and Chiwetel are content to let their work speak for them.

      • V4Real says:

@Violeta What’s confusing about that? I said that the media was not interested in him in the past, if they were they would have been all over him. Now that he might be nominated for an Oscar he will become more popular, people who are probably not that familiar with him might become more intrigued and hence the media frenzy. How is that confusing honey?

BTW I never said Chiwetel would want the attention like your last few lines are indirectly implying. I’m saying that the media will dig into his private and personal life once they put him on that superstar level.

  7. LB says:

I feel almost guilty talking about him in a gossip context. I just feel that way with some actors. It’s rare.

  8. j.eyre says:

Well, you recognized his hotness and that bodes well for us.

I must confess, I had only known him for Love Actually for a long time but a friend of mine got me turned on to his other movies a year or so ago. As mentioned, Kinky Boots is probably his best. Salt is enjoyable to watch and he is nice in American Gangster, although I did not enjoy that movie very much. His TV work is quite good and, of course, he is brilliant on stage from what I hear.

  9. mccora96 says:

SALT- I know it’s “hip” to hate all things Angelina, but it’s a really good, fun & twisty movie- Chiwetel, Liev, and Angelina are all excellent in it. Talk to Me- another great movie- also starring the awesome Don Cheadle. Red Belt- cool action flick and Chiwetel is bad a** Yes, Kinky Boots is fab, especially Chiwetel!

    • mccora96 says:

I can’t beliieve I forgot Serenity- he was a very cool villain! i’m a HUGE Angie (& Brad :)) fan, so I watched/read a lot of the press for SALT. I was a fan of Chiwetel before SALT, but grew to love him even more because of all the great things he had to say about Angie. They are both so humble & a little introverted/shy, but you can tell they had a really fun set. Liev said similar things. All this SALT talk is making me long for SALT 2!

      • Bex says:

I would love a Salt 2 with a great spy-type clandestine relationship between Angelina and Chiwetel. Not romantic but one of that top male actors have in the spy genre.

    • sputnik says:

i thought salt was a blast. so much fun. doesn’t hurt to have a couple of drinks while you’re watching it. he was good in melinda and melinda, and children of men too.

  10. Melody says:

He was in Children of Men, but he was a bit of a cause-driven bastard in it.

  11. lower-case deb says:

i’m not much of a cinemagoer, and i like spoilers a lot to a point where i wouldn’t want to go see a movie that i don’t know the ending of.
for some reason, when Kinky Boots was on limited showing in one of the cinemas here (and i think only for two days?), i couldn’t find any spoiler for it.
my friend really wanted me to accompany her and she she said that “it’s the _Most British_ remake of Birdcage”.

i still think it’s nowhere like Birdcage, but I really enjoyed KInky Boots even though i went in practically flying blind.
    wonderful Chiwetel!

  12. T.fanty says:

There is nothing hotter than a smart, charming name who is good at his job. Sure, looks help, but intelligence and attitude takes a man a long way, as far as I’m concerned.

  13. KatarinaS. says:

My favorite role of his, beside 12Years a Slave, is in Dirty Pretty Things. He was AMAZING!
He was also in Spike Lee’s Inside Man with Denzel, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster! Love that movie!

  14. Dimebox says:

Well, around here his hotness is certainly recognized. The last thread on him practically melted.

  15. Sunny says:

Watch Kinky Boots- he is terrific in it! The other day on this site someone mentioned Serenity. You should add that to your list because it is a different type of role for him for sure(he is fab in it as well).

But for my money you should start by watching Dirty Pretty Things. A compelling, disturbing, complex film. It is really good.

  16. Tiffany says:

I remember seeing him in Four Brothers and thinking why is he not a bigger star. He was the best thing about that movie and I was surprised to learn that he is British. He has also worked with some prolific director’s as well and has still be under the radar. Good for him to finally get more national recognition.

  17. taylor says:

He is incredibly attractive, but he’s one of the few actors I’d rather NOT have the press focus on. Or, at least not that aspect of him. Because he’s such an amazing actor, it feels like doing him a disservice to focus on his looks. Of course having said that, the Vogue spread was fantastic: he looked seriously sexy!

  18. Han says:

He is divine. Intelligent, talented, articulate and hot! The complete package! I have been waiting for people to discover the hotness i discovered at 13 when our school went to see romeo and juliet at the national theatre. Chiwetel was romeo and thus my crush on him was born, more than a decade later later my crush is still well and alive.

  19. vee says:

Fell in love with him in Dancing on the Edge. It’s available on demand (Starz network.) Great mini-series set in the Jazz Age.

  20. LAK says:

It’s wierd to see a tribe described as an ‘ethnic group’. I’ve never heard an African refer to their own tribe or their parent’s tribe as an ethnic group. You wouldn’t ask him what ethnic group he came from? You would ask after his tribe.

    • LL2 says:

Tribe and ethnic group are terms that the mean the same thing. Its like saying black or African-American or white or caucasian, its just a matter of personal preference. Good to know that you are an expert on all things African though. Personally, I prefer the term ethnic group because the term “tribe” is rooted in colonialism and has negative connotations for me.

  21. BaronessOrczy says:

    He’s a phenomenal actor.

  22. Marilyn says:

What a classy, elegant, likeable, talented man. He’s brilliant and beautiful. I’m in love…
