Amy Adams in blue Antonio Berardi at the SAGs: lovely or not that great?

You should hear my mother rant about how no one respects Amy Adams and how Amy nevers wins anything and how all of the older actresses need to step aside so Amy can finally win something. I mean, I sort of agree that it’s past time for Amy to be recognized in a major way – she just picked up her FIFTH Oscar nomination this week and she rarely wins anything. But is it crazy to think that Amy isn’t always on everyone’s radar because she really doesn’t know how to work a red carpet? I know one thing doesn’t have anything to do with the other, but owning a red carpet would definitely help her out with people remembering her and her performance. Instead, Amy usually gets it wrong. Her SAG look was no different.

The good stuff: her pale skin is absolutely flawless, and she just glowed on the red carpet. I also enjoyed the pintucked, retro hair – it was stiff, but it worked and it made her look like a 1950s movie star, not quite Rita Hayworth… but maybe Loretta Young. The bad stuff: the Antonio Berardi dress. I’m just not feeling it at all. The color was bold and bright but the fabric seemed kind of cheap and the design was just… eh. I really didn’t like this.

And here are the Homeland ladies, who were like non-entities on the red carpet. Morena Baccarin spoke to E!, but I guess Claire came late maybe? Claire wore Vionnet – I’m not feeling it. But it’s not actively horrible or anything, it just seems like the dress you choose when you don’t care about winning, I guess. Her makeup was too heavy and I’m not loving her darker hair.

Morena wore Monique Lhullier, Sarita Choudhury wore Nanette Lepore. I hate Sarita’s dress and styling – I love her and how she looks, but this makes her look like a widowed grandmother. Morena is so beautiful and the dress is okay. She talked to E! about her pregnancy and how she gained weight, so I guess she went with a flattering option.

Hummm Amy never really FAILS for me but she always comes out sort of bland and forgettable, i mean last weeks dress wasnt great but i didnt think it was horrible either. I think she’s just this plain jane and doesnt really like/enjoy being smouldering and memorable that way, you know?

I dont really watch homeland so i dont know the other ladies but oh my Claire Danes never really does it for me, she’s too skinny, borderline unhealthy looking so every dress looks like is on a hanger and not on an actual body…

The lady in the blue dress wins for me, i like the dress a lot. Suits her i think…

    • Kate says:

I think people are consistently overly nasty to Amy Adams. Plain Jane? LOL. As if. She’s gorgeous. She’s just classy and more focused on her talent and her job than on being someone you can gossip about. She’s an old time movie star.

She’s honestly too classy for the modern internet culture.

      • FLORC says:

She use to be plain and boring if not a fail. She’s really come out lately as more womenly. Before she seemed to scream virginal. Now she’s embracing her sex appeal imo.

      • bettyrose says:

Yeah but she’s only improved compared to how she used to be. She’s still a silly thing who’s no way in league with the other women nominated. I think she’s probably going to win though.

      • Kate says:

Let’s put aside the fact that it’s super super problematic to rob women of their sexuality bc they choose to not allow themselves to be constantly exploited in male gaze media..bc that’s seriously a problematic thing. I don’t think people even realize how rude and problematic it is to say stuff like that about a woman. Bc it is.

But calling her “silly” is also a stupid comment. She’s nominated among women significantly older than she is for one and two, she’s done nothing but be classy.

Honestly the comments on Adams are often loaded with culturally influenced misogny.

  2. TheCountess says:

Amy desperately needs Lupita’s stylist. The only thing I liked was her hair.

Claire Danes’ is an offense to eyeballs everywhere.

Morena – yawn. Sarita – looks like something you’d throw on at the last minute because you felt too fat to fit into the dress you were supposed to wear.

    • Liv says:

I like the color of her dress though, and her hair.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

I love Amy’s looks here. And she was the only great performance in American Hustle, I would really love her to win something.

Claire looks bad, Morena looks like she’s going to the prom.

  3. V4real says:

I’m meh about Amy’s dress. It’s the SAG, awards, not as prestigious as the GG or Oscars. Maybe she’s saving her best look for last. Claire Dane’s face looks weird in these pics.

    • lucy2 says:

That’s what I keep hoping, that she’s really wow everyone for the Oscars.

I don’t care for the design of this but the color is pretty on her. Morena’s is probably my favorite of the post.

    • Kate says:

I didn’t like Amy’s look at at. If she’ was taller, I think she could have pulled it off. Her hairstyle makes her look older. I prefer the Valentino number from the previous week

  4. Kiddo says:

Lol at the woman photo-bombing Claire Danes and sticking her tongue out. I don’t think any of these dresses are flattering, but I do like the use of the deep blues.

    • Falula says:

I was just going to post this!

I actually love Claire’s hair color and styling here if not the dress, but I was really distracted by that awesome face.

    • I Choose Me says:

Saw that too. I would give money to know what she was thinking when she made that face.

  5. lucy says:

I think Amy looks flawless, I love that colour on her. I think she’s just an understated lady, and doesn’t try to be a showstopper on the red carpet, but she’s a damn fine actress in my opinion which is much more important.

I don’t get Claire’s dress at all. It reminds me of a paper doll, in that she looks like the dress is pinned on her and could fall off at any time.

    • Renee says:

I am not a fan of Amy Adams (I find her bland) and I usually can’t stand her red carpet style. But I think she looked great here!!! LOVE the color and the retro 30s style of the dress. I like the green earrings that she paired with the dress and the gold belt adds an interesting detail to a very minimal, subtly avant garde dress. She looks really lovely.

  6. pwal says:

Amy should’ve gotten an Oscar for Junebug.

But wouldn’t it be sad that her red carpet appearances influence votes about her skills onscreen. It’ll be a sad commentary on her peers for allowing that to enter into their decisions.

  7. Snappyfish says:

Don’t like the darker hair on Claire (she actually looked a little dark Kirsten Dunst at first glance) & none of these dresses work for me.

    • Sullivan says:

No? Gosh, I’m in the minority who thinks Claire looks good. The darker hair brings out her eyes. In fact, all the ladies of Homeland look lovely to me.

      • Kiddo says:

I like the darker color too. In fact, I think she can pull it a shade or two darker with gold highlights.

      • Renee says:

I agree. I thought that Claire looked pretty and relaxed, even if her dress was ugly. Her hair looks great and I really like her eye makeup.

      • ab says:

yeah, I think the darker hair color suits claire, it makes her look warmer. if that makes sense. the light blonde was not working for her. but that dress is an eyesore.

      • BettyBlue says:

I’m with you. I prefer her hair this colour and I thought her makeup and dress suited her. Maybe not what I would wear but they suited her.

      • Becky1 says:

I really like her hair a little darker-I think it looks great.

  8. Marianne says:

Amy Adams was my best dressed of the night. So exquisite. And it was definitely an interesting design. It didnt look boring on her, and it fit her really great. Love the colour as well.

I like Claire Dane’s hair. But I’m not too crazy about the dress.

  9. bns says:

I love Claire’s dress. I wish she would’ve worked it more.

  10. Frida_K says:

Sarita is so pretty…why the awful dress?

    🙁

  11. Michella says:

Amy really needs to work on posing. The dress itself is pretty, but her posing is uncomfortable to look at and overdone. It’s a bit overly dramatic. I think that detracts from the beauty of the dress because it is distracting.

  12. LaurieH says:

I am probably one of the few people that didn’t hate Amy’s GG dress. This purple dress bugs me. The color is nice on her (though pairing it with a red lip looks 80’s to me) and it seems to fit well enough. I love the asymmetrical concept of the dress, but the fit on the top of the dress makes it appear that it’s being pulled and is actually just twisted. Claire Danes dress is underwhelming for me. It looks like a sequined column dress with a bunch of sheer curtain panels attached to it. Morena’s dress screams Mother-of-the-Bride and Sarita’s dress looks like a depressing Victorian doily.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

I truly thought Amy looked gorgeous! The dress, that color on her, her hair and makeup…it was all perfection…and I agree with your Mom…Amy is ALWAYS excellent and def should have won something by now…

    • littlestar says:

I always say, redheads best colour to wear is blue! I thought she looked great too, for once she wasn’t bland!

      • mayamae says:

As a redhead, I think the best colour is green. Marcia Cross wore a green dress with her hair long and loosely curled and she was gorgeous.

  14. Diana says:

I think the dress is fabulous! Amy is just so pretty! I don’t think she’ll win the Oscar this year not because she wasn’t absolutely awesome in American Husle but because her role was not as prominent as Cate Blanchet’s was. Blue Jasmin focuses only on Cate while Amy had to share the story with Christian Bale so it works in Cate’s advantage. They both were incredible in their roles so it doesn’t matter Cate takes it.

  15. pru says:

I think Amy looked really pretty, but not loving the geometric cut at the top of the dress.
Claire, on the other had, did look actively horrible. We know she can look so much better.

  16. Maggie says:

Amy’s dress was gorgeous on her but I didn’t like her hair. Claire looked stunning. Beautiful woman!

  17. Aria says:

I disagree. Claire looks better with darker hair. Platinum blonde washed her out. Her dress was pretty but the makeup ruined it.

IMO Amy Adams was the best dressed yesterday.

  18. shellybean says:

    I thought Morena looked gorgeous.

For some reason Claire’s look is working for me.

    Amy Adams looked perfect.

  19. Pompasaurus says:

For me, the biggest problem with Amy’s look is her makeup. It doesn’t go well with her out fit, and it doesn’t enhance her best features. She would have looked so much nicer with smoldery eye makeup and a toned down, darker lip color.

  20. Megan says:

Amy’s dress was beautiful and so fashionable however, the hair and make up was a disaster. It made a beautiful and younger girl look old, haggard and stiff. She should have had her hair down and warmer makeup because that dress was so pretty.

  21. Seagulls says:

I think Claire’s darker hair looks way more flattering than her lighter blonde, but she also looks less famous with the darker hair.

  22. Pumpkin Pie says:

    Is Claire Danes showing???
    I don’t like Amy’s hair and make-up, the dress is okay-ish. I don’t like the color though.

  23. A Fan says:

I can take or leave Amy Adams and her dress, but the colour was great on her.

Finally! Claire Dane’s has a much more flattering hair colour these days – and the dress really flattered her figure (which is a somewhat difficult figure to dress as she is really long-waisted and her choices usually emphasize that). It broke up the expanse of her long chest and made her waist appear higher, which also made her legs look longer.

Morena looked lovely – great style, fit, and colour on her (even though I don’t know who she is!).

  24. Anna says:

Amy’s coloring looks odd to me.

  25. sarah says:

Honestly, get someone else to evaluate the fashion! I’ve read most of the fashion coverage from the past few days and I’ve never disagreed more with your coverage!! There’s no accounting for your “taste”!!!

  26. Carol says:

Amy looked awful last night. The color was hideous on her and her hairstyle could have bern better. But I thought she looked great, sexy, at the Globes. The other ladies (minus Claire ) looked like they wearing 60’s sleepwear

  27. Helvetica says:

LOVE Amy’s dress. You know who it would look amazing on though? Gwenyth Paltrow.

Also, Claire Danes dress rocks here. It’s fun!

  28. GemPlum says:

I think Amy wins here: this blue dress looks gorgeous on her flawless pale skin. Ditto on the comments on her hair and make-up. As for the material of the dress, it does not look cheap to me at all. It looks solid so as to avoid and slip-ups. She just seems sweet and quietly confident, and in a world of Goops that is refreshing to me.

  29. I Choose Me says:

Amy Adams looks pretty damn good to me. The only thing I didn’t like was her lipstick. The shade seemed off on her some how.

  30. Fran says:

    I like ALL these dresses.
