Naya Rivera looks really different in Cosmo Latina: plastic surgery or just makeup?

CFL Naya Rivera Spring 2014 Cover

Naya Rivera has completely remade herself… into Jennifer Lopez. The first glimpse of this transformation came at the People’s Choice Awards earlier this month, when many of us could swear that we were looking at photos of Jennifer Lopez – go here to see. Naya has lost weight (from her face, especially), but I strongly suspect there is something surgical going on here too. CB and I were trying to figure it out (CB made the side-by-side at the bottom of the post): there’s definitely a nose job, and probably something done to her chin. I suspect an eye-lift too. She definitely Bristol Palin’d herself (or as CB said: “That’s some Kardashian-level plastic surgery.”)

Anyway, Naya covers the new issue of Cosmopolitan Latina. The cover image is J.Lo-tastic but the interior images aren’t so plastic-y. You can read her interview here and here are some highlights:

On indulging her domestic side:
“Latinas are really great nurturers who are great to our men; we love hard and we love to cook. The other morning I woke up and was like, ‘I need china – this table needs to be set all the time!’ Focusing on those things is where I’m at right now.”

On her fiancée, rapper Sean Michael Anderson, aka “Big Sean:”
“I think he’s going to be an amazing husband, and he’ll make a great father someday. He’s so kind to people, but he also wears the pants in our relationship, which I love. We Latinas are very independent and strong, so it’s even sweeter that I’ve found somebody who can let me out of that role for a minute.”

On getting ahead as a teenager when her family fell on tough times:
“I was very resourceful when it came to getting a job. I was the ultimate liar on a resume. At the tender age of 19, I said I had a bachelor’s degree; they never checked! Even when I didn’t have much, I always acted as if I had everything I wanted. Latin women are go-getters by nature. We have a certain charm and finesse that gets us what we want.”

On understanding Spanish better than she speaks it:
“It sucks because I have no one to [speak Spanish] to, but it’s something I need to learn when I have kids. They need to be fluent.”

[From Cosmo Latina]

I took Spanish classes for years and I’m better at listening to Spanish (and understanding only part of it) than I am speaking it. As for all of the generalizations about Latinas… I understand the desire to embrace her heritage and talk it up, especially to a Latina-specific publication and a primarily Latina audience, but some of the generalizations come across as eye-rolly and simplistic. Here’s the question: if a non-Latina person was making those kinds of generalizations about Latinas, would you be cool with it?

She shouldn’t have changed her hair.

  2. bluhare says:

Maybe it’s her coloring but I thought she looked more like Kim Kardashian.

    • Stef Leppard says:

So did I. I thought it was Kim when I first saw that PCA pic. In the side by side pics you can tell she’s had a nose job. Otherwise it’s hard to tell what other work she might have had done because she’s smiling in one and serious in the other.

    • emmie_a says:

Me too. I remember other sites comparing her to KK too. And she really does look like she could be Kim’s mini-me at this point. It really ages her.

    • MsGoblin says:

If Kim Kartrashian and JLo had a love-child…this would be it.

  3. idk says:

It’s the make-up, that damn contouring. Also, photoshop on the cover.

  4. LAK says:

This cover photo looks like a cross between Eva Longoria and Ali Landry.

  5. Nicole says:

My hypothesis: Weight loss (cocaine), brow lift, nose job, hair color, and a bad makeup artist.

    • Katie says:

I agree it looks like drugs are at play here but what i noticed the most was that her jaw line looks more square in the second picture – which is a notably characteristic of bulimina. You can Google bulimia jaw and her looks like a classic case. A huge offender of this is Betheney Frankel…..

      • FLORC says:

I do not understand this Bulimia Jaw thing. I get what it is and why it is, but having that kind of jaw line does not confirm or deny bulimia. It’s not a hallmark of the ed. And those who have bulimia may never show the puffy jawline and cheeks.

I had bulimia for my late teens and some 20’s. Was hospitalized for it. Never saw another person with “bulimia cheeks” in a sea of people with eds nor did i have them. Have met healthy people with that jawline.
It’s like saying you’re a smoker because you have yellow teeth like all other smokers.

    • FLORC says:

I also thought Cocain. Or more like… How much cocain is she on to make her think she looks good like that?

  6. Hannah says:

“He wears the pants in our relationship, which I love. We Latinas are very independent and strong, so it’s even sweeter that I’ve found somebody who can let me out of that role for a minute.”

Why are so many successful women pushing that narrative? I’m really in charge professionally but at home I let the guy take the helm. Am I the only one who is bothered by that kinda talk?

    • idk says:

She’s bi-racial. Half Latin and half African American. Why is she only calling herself Latin?

      • LAK says:

you may as well ask the same question of Eva Longoria, Halle Berry and Cameron Diaz who are all mixed race, but identify with one side strongly, if not completely.

      • Liz says:

Halle and Obama are 1/2 Black and 1/2 White why do they call themseves Black?

      • Nikkie says:

Maybe cause Latina is a culture not a race. You can be Black, White, or Brown and still be Latina. She seems to identify more with her Latina culture than her American one. Biracial kids are always pressured to pick one culture.

      • idk says:

@ LAK – Eva Longoria is mixed? I didn’t know that.

@ Nikkie – It`s sad biracial kids are pressured to pick one culture. If they choose to identify more with one than the other, that`s fine, as long as it`s of their choosing.

      • Jamie says:

Maybe because this is a Latina magazine.

      • idk says:

        @ Jamie

Yes, I know it’s the Latina Edition of Cosmo. Actually I need to correct myself, she is half Puerto Rican, a quarter African American, and a quarter German descent. I’m guessing maybe her father was the dominant figure in the house and therefore perhaps she relates more with the Latin culture? I mean it’s a great culture so why not. Just interesting that people feel the need to choose one ethnicity when they are mixed with many beautiful ones.

      • Aly says:

Why the hell does it bother you that she calls herself Latina? She IS Latina. Does she have to go around and tell everyone she is part black too? It’s no secret and it’s not line she’s ashamed. I’m mixed like her and I hate people bitching at me telling me how to identify myself. I know what I am and I will decide what to call myself. Naya has that right too. Jfc it’s like Zoe Saldana all lover again. Get over it people.

      • Judy says:

@ Nikki . I disagree with this assumption. My kids are bi -racial and multi-ethnic. We live in a highly diverse area. My kids are not pressured, but they choose to identify with my culture. I think it’s because I’m more exotic and their dad is the norm. Their dad is annoyed and we try to make sure they are aware of his family ‘s history, but they don’t seem to care about it too much. Immigrants coming to Cali by Covered wagon from the Midwest and family members coming from the south after doesn’t strike them as exciting. My family’s food and culture is what they identify with. I also chose my father ‘s culture and heritage over my mother ‘s for that same reason. Hers was too bland.

      • LilyT says:

As far as the biracial thing goes, my experience is that it’s pretty complicated. I personally fit in better with white kids in school as my dad is from Africa and not African-American. I knew next to nothing about African-American culture and somehow always felt like an outsider.
With my white friends though, I was still the “black” girl. Even though, yes technically, I am just as much white as I am black.. People label you as they see you, by appearance. If I decided to say “I’m white”… With my medium tan skin and “mixed kid hair”.. I think people would laugh in my face.

Basically, a lot if different factors go into determining how you choose to “label” yourself. I wish it didn’t even have to be a thing, but society loves labels and wants to shove unique individuals into categories. Ambiguity makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

    • Marie says:

Trust me you’re not the only one annoyed by this sort of crap. I grew up in a family where my grandmother was a submissive little wife, and my mother taught me to be in charge of myself and my life 24/7.

    • idk says:

      @ Aly

Calm down. I was paying her many compliments if you read my comments correctly. I said she has the right to identify with whatever she wants. I just find it interesting when people choose to pick one ethnicity over the other. Some people pointed out that a lot of bi-racial kids are pressured into choosing one culture over the other. That is sad. My comment shouldn’t have bothered you as I said nothing wrong. You sound like a very angry person. Have a nice day and relax.

      • LL2 says:

I think the nature of your question might be upsetting. It seemed like you were looking for an explanation as to why Naya identifies the way she does. “Why is she only calling herself Latin?” To some mulitiracial/multiethnic people, to ask such a question is rude because how and why they identify a certain way is their personal business and no one else’s business. I personally can’t imagine someone actually expecting me to answer such a question.

  7. Laurel says:

The most obvious thing to me when I look at her is the boob job. Comparing pics of her from 4 years ago to pics taken right now is pretty hilarious.

  8. Marty says:

Because she said Latinas are great nurturers? It’s her perspective as a Latina woman growing up around other Latina women. What’s wrong with that?

And y’all should look at some of her even older pics. She has had a lot of work done, sadly, because I think she’s a really pretty girl.

  9. JLM says:

I see a big difference in her mouth. She looks like she has the mouth of Julia Roberts or The Joker.

And, um, yeah – that interview is awful. She should speak for herself, not all Latinas! She sounds like an idiot. And can I make predictions on a divorce before she even gets married?

  10. skeksis says:

This is all contouring, in my opinion. No surgery on her face.

  11. daisyfly says:

That contour job must have taken an hour of cooking. It looks like she did have the tip of her nose shaved, but the rest is the work of a makeup artist with a flair for the drag queen aesthetic (that overlining on her lips…oy! ).

    • Joy says:

I got a little contour happy before I got my new driver’s license and I look like Michael Jackson. So I can personally speak for makeup doing a lot. But are there ANY women in Hollywood who don’t do a little something?

  12. Squeegee says:

Hoooooly crap! She looks awful!! The surgeries, makeup and hair age her terribly, making her look 40-50 y.o.! Definitely a combo of a nose job, boobs, chin reduction, eyebrow lift, Botox, and bad, bad makeup contouring and hair dye job. I feel like her ethnicity has been completely wiped off. What living and working in Beverly Hills will do to a person.

  13. Dawn says:

She has been tweeked in my opinion. She looks so different now from that first year or two of Glee. That’s too bad because she was stunner just the way that she was.

  14. Diana says:

I’m offended even if a latina makes a statement like the one she did. It is stereotypical and stupid; I’m a borned and raised latina and I have NO domestic side at all; does that make her more latina than me? Stupid things said by an uneducated actress. What a shock!

    • prayforthewild says:

      Thank you!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Really, I am so tired of Latina women saying they are more domestic, more feminine, whatever, it’s not just one personality type.

    • von doom says:

Well, if you think about it, she isn’t really “Latina”… these fake-ass hispanics they roll out in Hollywood to speak for us (for ex…this idiot, Longoria, Alba, J.Lo., et al) are really tiresome.

You can be ethnically “hispanic” but she doesn’t evidence anything to show she was raised in it deeply (hell she can’t even speak Spanish – neither can any of these so-called “Latina” spokeswomen”). It’s a marketing ploy, now that it’s cool to be “Latino” they are trying to be down with it. But, these interviews betray how fake and out of touch with their supposed culture they really are. Yes, she’s technically “Hispanic” (by the census definition of the word) but if she’s “Latina”, I’m Snow White.

Sofia Vergara, Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, Edward James Olmos, Esai Morales, Jimmy Smits, Benny del Toro, Elizabeth Pena – those are real Latinos 🙂

  15. Samigirl says:

IMO, she had surgery a few years ago. Her lips were plumped and she had a brow lift. She’s also got bolt-ons but that’s besides the point. I liked the way she looked when she first started Glee. Now, she is completely different and not as attractive, IMO.

  16. Bread and Circuses says:

I honestly think this is all makeup and a small amount of weight loss.

Her nose looks the same if you take into account the contouring provided by her foundation, and her chin looks the same shape. Her eyes, again, have a heavy amount of makeup to create the effect of a lift, but if you look at the shape underneath the makeup, that looks the same.

I mean, she looks really plastic now, but I think it’s just a heavy coat of artistically-applied paint, not anything structural.

    • Bridget says:

Don’t just look at the width of her nose, look at how much space there is between nose and mouth. Its clear as day that she had a major nose job, with some slimming and a lot of the end taken off. It totally changes her face.

      • Mel M says:

Definitely a nose job, no question. Weight loss and contouring can be attributed to the other stuff.

  17. Marianne says:

Shes definitely had plastic surgery + Botox. But I think her cover is also really photoshopped.

  18. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Best way to learn Spanish is to watch telenovelas, they are more hilarious than comedies.

  19. Jac says:

She’s got this weird, frozen look to the space between her nose and upper lip, like Kim K. What IS that?

    • Tiffany :) says:

That area looks really odd to me too. I can’t figure out what is going on.

It is crazy how much older she looks than her actual years, I think it is a bit surgery and a bit too much make up.

  20. wendy says:

That is not a bulimia jaw.

I think she’s lost weight and got a bit of a nose job. I don’t think she got a brow lift I just think she got a brow makeover.

  21. IvanaVodka says:

IMO, heavy contouring is not attractive. Makeup should enhance your features, not make you look like you’re auditioning for a role in “The Lion King”.

    • idk says:

I’ve only seen women use contouring on tv or in mags, never seen it in real life. It would look horrifying !

  22. QQ says:

Christ that is some bizarre shit!!

As a latina I hate when these chippies start with the “you know how us Latinas like to____” SHUT UP we are not a Mami Monolith (im also pre side eyeing Jessica Alba and Xtina Aguilera who love to parade this bullshit every few years)

  23. Happy21 says:

The bolt-ons are well know. Her character on Glee came back from Summer vacation with them so they were written in the script.

She has a banging body which I’m so envious of but her looks now are so generic. She looks like every one else now and not an individual at all. It’s sad 🙁

  24. Isa says:

Nose job, lips plumped and a crap ton of make up.

  25. lambchops says:

Wow, I didn’t realise she spoke for all the Latinas everywhere as their representative.

  26. wheezy says:

HOLY MOLY! She looks craaazzyy with ALL of that work. I read somewhere a few weeks ago- I forgot where- that she bought herself a new behind as well. They had side-by-sides from christmas and from a few months prior…it was pretty evident. Lol
    Idk…..

  27. Rowrowrowyourboat says:

Talk about stereotypes. I’m half Cuban and Spanish, and I HATE to cook.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I have a Mexican aunt (who lived in Mexico for half her life) who HATES cooking–it’s not that she’s a bad cook, but she hates it. My uncle hates her cooking, because she always makes the same three things–which they’re good, but it’s always the same. When I stayed w/ them a few summers ago, I swear that I did more cooking than she did.

  28. Kali says:

Honestly, I see more Sandra Bullock in that 2014 photo with J. Lo’s hair. As for that mag cover, I think it’s plastic surgery, makeup and some airbrushing to boot.
