Naomi Watts in white Calvin Klein at the Oscars: too simple or lovely?

The 86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals A4
Naomi Watts was one of the many women in white last night. She was in a cap sleeve Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein collection gown. The dress is too simple, in my opinion, but I like her Bulgari statement necklace and earrings and I sort-of like her styling. Naomi’s makeup is perfect but the poof in her hair was a little much. Still, she looked gorgeous as usual. She wasn’t nominated so she probably didn’t want to bring out the big guns.

Julia Delpy wore draped metallic Jenny Packham to the Oscars and switched to a navy v-neck cap sleeve dress for the Vanity Fair Oscar party. Both gowns were impressive and fit each event well. The Packham really stood out on the red carpet and I loved the brooch-like detail at the waist. Delpy’s party dress was just a bit more casual and comfortable looking. Delpy was up for Adapted Screenplay, for Before Midnight, which went to 12 Years.

Laura Dern supported her dad Bruce last night. She was in a too-tight pale pink Alberta Ferretti gown. With a different bodice, one that wasn’t so tiny and high, this dress would have worked. The gown has impressive structural details and it does look great in these photos. On camera it looked very tight and uncomfortable though. I loved how supportive Laura was of her dad, that was nice to see. On ABC’s otherwise disappointing pre-Oscar show, they interviewed Dern’s Nebraska costar June Squibb and she told a funny story about how Bruce Dern went around telling everyone that she (June) used to be a pole dancer. June had to clarify that she was a stripper, not a pole dancer, and that it was on Broadway. You could tell that they gave each other a lot of grief on set.

I’m throwing Emma Watson in here because I didn’t know where else to put her. In photos, this dress looks very plain, but on camera it was kind of amazing. She was in metallic and black Vera Wang. When she presented for the Visual Effects category (which went to Gravity, natch) I noticed how incredible her skirt looked. It’s hard to see in pictures because it’s so dark. That was the problem I had with a lot of the fashion last night: it was either too light or too dark and the details on these beautiful gowns didn’t stand out well enough.

I hated Emma’s dress. I didn’t think it looked any better on camera than it does in these pictures. It looks like cheap stretchy metallic polyester.

I loved Naomi Watt’s dress. Simple, classic , beautiful. Her styling was perfect.

    • Splinter says:

Ha, I thought just the opposite – Emma’s dress, hair and makeup looked nice, but Naomi has looked better. The hairdo was not flattering and the dress was boring.

      • Decloo says:

I’m with you. I generally like Emma’s style but she could use a few pricy baubles here. Naomi’s hair is awful.

    • Bernice says:

      The eyebrows…. Whoa!

  2. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Emma Watson had the best hair and makeup, IMO. The dress was blah. And I hate her accent. She sounds more British than the Queen.
Julie’s Oscar dress was awful, but the navy one is lovely.
    Naomi looked great.

  3. LadySlippers says:

Naomi looked stunning. And I’m not a fan of white dresses which there were aplenty.

Julie (again) looks like she doesn’t have a stylist and/or doesn’t know how to dress to flatter her body.

    Laura’s and Emma looked okay.

    • Marty says:

I love Naomi’s dress. She looked great in it, but I really didn’t like the hair. The hair looks like she gave up half way on blow drying it.

  4. Franklymydear1 says:

Too reminiscent of michelle williams’ white chanel dress

  5. M says:

Loved Emma Watson’s dress. Naomi looked pretty but feel like its the same look we always get from her

  6. shellybean says:

Naomi looked fantastic. I also love Julie’s dresses, both of them. I just love her.

  7. Aria says:

Emma’s dress looks awful in pictures but not so much in motion. She could have done so much better.

  8. Side-Eye says:

    She’s aging weird to me.

  9. Jayna says:

I thought Naomi looked fantastic when she walked out on the stage also. Effortlessly classic, simple lines.

  10. FingerBinger says:

Are Naomi and Liev married or not? I see a band on her ring finger.

  11. Tellie says:

I loved her in King Kong. She was perfect for the role. Also feel in love with Adrian Brody at the same time.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Why do people change their dress for the after parties? Because they borrowed the dress and don’t want to damage it? To be more comfortable?

    • pru says:

I think it may be a way for designers to get more looks seen. Since they do red carpets for after parties now. It always seems though like it would be such a big hassle changing in and out of gowns all night.

    • LadySlippers says:

Oh Dahling they are copying *us*. It’s because we change several times a day, *everyday*.

Oh it’s about time I change for luncheon. TTFN!

      *waves and flits away*

      😉

Glad to see I’m not the only one who thought Emma looked beautiful. I loved her dress. I think she looked young and fashion forward.

  14. Janet says:

I loved Emma Watson’s and Naomi Watts’ dresses. Those two and Angie’s were the best of the night.

  15. Maggie says:

Emma Watson looked absolutely beautiful. Loved her dress!

  16. Lucy says:

I loved Naomi’s whole look! And after last night, I kinda want Emma and JGL to date.

  17. feebee says:

I thought Naomi looked perfect for an Oscar presenter. I don’t have a thought on Emma’s dress. It just was. The thought I did have about her was if she’d ever consider hosting with JGL. I know Hathaway and whatshisface probably killed the possibility of anyone under 50 ever hosting it again but….

I’m getting deja vu from Delpy’s dress but can’t place it.

    • Miss M says:

I agree with you. Naomi’s dress was classic, simple, elegant, and it was perfect for a presenter.

I expect the WOW reaction for a dress worn by a nominee.

  18. Mouse says:

Emma Watson really bugs me after that lack of drinking water comment.

  19. Nymeria says:

Is Emma’s underwear visible in the bottom photo? Or is the lighting just weird?

  20. Camille (The Original) says:

Emma and Naomi looked very nice. Although I’m not too fussed about Naomi’s hair.

  21. Becky1 says:

Wow-Naomi Watts, Julie Delpy and Laura Dern look very natural and like they didn’t take the pre-Award show Botox or fillers route. That takes guts-good for them.

  22. jhava says:

Naomi’s brow game was poor. That shade is too dark and made her look hard and older. Lighten up the brow if you’re going for silver and gold highlights ladies!

  23. tredd says:

    NAOMI! EAT SOMETHING!
She looks like hell. That starvation business: works when you’re 20.
    Or 30…
