Lorde was asked if she & Taylor Swift are lesbians & she shut it down in a great way

Yesterday, there were some photos making the rounds of Taylor Swift and Lorde. They were posing together and acting silly, like great female friends, in NYC. After Lorde “dissed” Swifty last year (except Lorde didn’t really, she just said Taylor is too perfect), they became friends. Lorde came to Taylor’s 24th birthday party (a garden party) in Melbourne. They hung out in LA when Lorde came in for the Grammys. Lorde says that they talk a lot too, and that Taylor gives great advice. So when Lorde was asked some absolutely bizarre questions about her friendship with Taylor, Lorde answered in the best way she could because FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, can’t two women be friends without everyone saying “lesbians”?

Not that there’s anything wrong with that! New Zealander Lorde got into a bit of a tiff on Monday, March 10 with radio host Kyle Sandilands of KIIS FM, who sidetracked discussing her Australian tour in favor of her blossoming friendship with singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

“I see you guys’ pictures everywhere are you guys together now?” Sandilands asked (via the Daily Mail), later clarifying, “Not together as in lesbians, I’m not talking about ‘Ellen together’ I’m talking about, like you guys are friendly right?”

But rather than acting offended by the radio host’s initial implications, the “Royals” singer, 17, seemed more upset that he threw out the phrase “Ellen together.”

“What do you mean you’re not talking about ‘Ellen together,’ is there something wrong with lesbians?” she asked.

“Oh my god no, I would love that!” he exclaimed. “Are you going to confirm now you’re in a lesbian relationship with her?”

“Don’t even try it,” the Grammy winner calmly replied.

The shock jock continued to pester Lorde about her friendship with the “Red” singer, 24, but the breakout star remained relatively tight-lipped and understandably irritated by the entire conversation.

“I do love her though, we get along well with her. She’s very down to earth, right?” Sandilands asked.

After an awkward pause, the “Royals” crooner replied, “Uh… yeah.”

The radio host then sarcastically commented, “Don’t go too overboard explaining the friendship then.”

Seemingly annoyed, Lorde responded, “I won’t, believe me.”

The dynamic duo were last spotted together, dancing in the streets of New York City on Sunday, March 9. And in February 2014, Lorde visited Swift in California where they were spotted frolicking on the beach in Malibu and going on a shopping spree in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood.

Lorde has been dating 24-year-old photographer James Lowe since December 2013, and though she’s currently single, Swift’s high-profile flames have been countlessly chronicled in her many chart-topping songs.

[From Us Weekly]

This feels like such a dated conversation. But that just goes to show you – the overwhelming majority of radio DJs are still stuck in an era when some lesbian insinuations are the height of comedy. Har har, two women are friends, har har, let’s joke about how they’re lesbians. And then when he got called out on it, he went to an even more tired trope: he’s cool with lesbians because lesbians are super-sexy and he would totally be into watching, right? Ugh. I don’t blame Lorde at all for shutting it down. I’m actually sort of surprised she was able to finish out the interview.

Well Kyle has been known for making concentration camp jokes to Jewish people and quizzing a 14 (or 13) year old girl about her sex life even after she admitted she’d been raped.

    …he’s pretty high class

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wow. Why is he still on the air?

    • Kali says:

I had forgotten about the concentration camp jokes! Ugh. Sandilands is repulsive.

    • V4Real says:

If he is known around town as a wanker why do celebs such as Lorde bother to go on his radio show in the first place? Are they afraid their music won’t get played if they decline his offer to appear?

    • Racer says:

Wy doesn’t that blond ditz co-host stop him from coming out with half the stuff he says? It’s appalling how she just sits there while he constantly berates and attacks people.

    • Miffy says:

I was going to say how could he get away with making some sleazy girl-on-girl references to a 17 year old but never mind apparently! Wow, just wow.

  2. Aussie girl says:

Ask any Australian and they will tell you that Kyle sandilands is the biggest wanker. The fact he conducted an interview with these questions is no shock at all. It makes me shake my head!!

    • whipmyhair says:

I was so annoyed when he moved to MIX/KIIS. I listened to MIX and now I don’t; because I have boycotted(?) Kyle for many years now.

  3. whipmyhair says:

    For Kyle this is tame.

A few years back he got a 14 year old girl hooked up to a lie detector on the air and asked her questions. After pressuring her to answer questions about her sexual experience she revealed that she was a survivour of sexual assault.

This man just topped the last ratings poll in Sydney.

He is a horrible excuse for a human being.

    • allons-y alonso says:

I will never forget that awful piece of “radio”. I had never been more disgusted at a bunch of people in my life.

    • Tapioca says:

How do you hook up a 14-year old girl to a lie detector without parental consent? And what parent would give it?!!

      • qwerty says:

@Tapioca her mother did. I think she was even there and it was her idea, cause she thought her daugter was a slut. Smh

What the fuck is Lorde doing going to this loser’s show though? Everyone’s like “How is this guy still on air??” – Well, that’s how. He’s got famous people giving him interviews without even fucking bothering to google his name.

    • Laura says:

Not only that, after she revealed so, he went on to ask her, ‘So is that your first sexual experience then?’
I have no idea why he is still on air. He is such low-life trash.

  4. Xantha says:

Well women can never have platonic friendships. We either hate each other’s guts or a lesbian lovers! Both options of course are designed to titillate straight men.

And since we’re talking about Taylor and Lorde, I wonder what they talk about. They don’t seem like they would have a whole lot in common.

    • Vanessa says:

      Lorde & Taylor.

      • gg says:

        LMAO

Lorde actually looks cute when she’s not channeling a dead body. Ditch the black lippy, hon.

    • mimi says:

      @Xantha

How true! This insatiable need by some to put a label on a woman’s sexual orientation (guys too, but to a lesser degree) based on a friendship that shows genuine admiration and affection for someone of the same sex is not only banal but also rude and ignorant. If two women like to hang out with eachother and look happy doing so, why does it automatically have to mean they are also sex partners? When people come to those misguided conclusions about certain celebs based solely on selfies or pap pics, it’s usually due to them not ever having experienced a close friendship of their own with someone they truly cared about and enjoyed spending time with.

  5. allons-y alonso says:

Kyle Sandilands is an embarrassment and is the reason why we can’t have nice things! He is a complete twat and what’s worse is that his stupidity is often 1) enabled by his co host Jackie O and; 2) encouraged by the idiots who listen to their radio show.

  6. Dhavynia says:

    So high school

I love and wear dark lipstick all the time but I wish Lorde will lay off the almost black shade and stick with burgundy

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think, from comments above, that this guy is truly evil and offensive, but I also think many DJs are just a$$hats. They get paid to talk, and they listen to themselves all day until they’re convinced they are hilarious and witty and fascinating. They never are. I listen to my own music or NPR. I almost never listen to commercial radio because I can’t stand all that drivel.

  8. Gine says:

“Explain the friendship”–you know, friendships being so complicated and all. It’s sad that so many men can’t seem to grasp the idea of two women liking each other.

    • Mark says:

Women rarely get labeled as lesbians when hanging out together it’s always men. They always get the bromance tag or his websites like these you’ll see bradley cooper walking down the street with a man, then you’ll see comments like ‘it’s obviously his boyfriend’.

It’s way more common for women to excuse to male friends of being gay than the other way round.

  9. TwoHearts says:

Kyle Sandilands is a disgusting, horrible human being. He regularly makes vile comments (particularly about women) and is continuously backed up by his bubble-brained co-anchor Jackie O and moronic ‘fans’. I am disgusted he is considered popular, because what does that say about our society? Good for Lorde for shutting him down – I wish more of his guests would call him on his bulls***!

  10. Cricket says:

Love her answer and confidence! She is a real role model for girls! If Swifty is there to support her and show her the ropes so to speak, speaks highly of her too. Can’t say I’m a fan of Swifty but she has been acting like a class act and handles herself with dignity, great examples! Well done ladies!

  11. Lucy says:

AMAZING. I’m not saying she’s my role model, but I’m not saying she isn’t, either.

  12. lurker010 says:

isn’t that the same radio station that pulled the prank on a poor nurse of the royal family?

    • truthSF says:

Say it isn’t so? That poor woman killed herself she was so humiliated.

    • Chrissy says:

      Pretty much.

Kyle and Jackie O used to be on 2DAYFM, which was involved in the tragic nurse-royal family incident, but they’ve moved to a different radio station KIIS.

  13. The Original Original says:

I HATE that black lipstick. Its just awful

    • God me too. But the thing is–she’s been cultivating a Goth image since she came on the scene–it’s just her signature look by now. But yeah–it really is unflattering IMO.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

She’s just started a collab with MAC so expect to see more of this colour lippy and on more people…

      • Lou says:

hopefully it’s just a trend and she’ll move on soon. She’s so cute in the Royals video.

  14. Sarah says:

to be fair it happens to guys also that when they spent time with other guys or fashion designers people think they are gay. or look at clooney. because he is a serial dater people think he must be gay. or Hugh Jackman and Pierce Brosnan, their wives dont fit into the perfect beauty standards so they must be beards, right?
Or a heterosexual woman and a heterosexual man go to dinner together, there are headlines everywhere.
So this is gross in either way, its not exclusive to women.

i have never heard about that radio guy but what the people here are saying, wow thats disgusting.

  15. Amy Tennant says:

Lorde seems mature for her age, and Taylor seems young for hers. They’re both young singers and songwriters, so despite the apparent differences between them, I imagine they have enough in common to talk about. Besides, you don’t have to be clones to be friends. Most of my female friends are very different from me.

I like seeing a public, positive homosocial friendship between young women. Taylor always has seemed to have good friends among young women in the music industry. Remember the story about how she warned Selena away from Justin (not that it worked, sadly). It’s nice to see Taylor hanging out with a friend instead of a series of apparently intense romantic relationships (and yet she still gets questions like these?)

I almost wish it were true, though. Can you imagine? What if all Taylor’s relationships failed because she hadn’t found the right woman? I’d be so ecstatic for her.

  16. feebee says:

ha ha, sounds like she had his number.

  17. Dizzle says:

And a year from now we’ll all be saying “Lorde who??”.

  18. Anon says:

Is it just me, or is they writing in this article ridiculously offensive to women? It describes these woman as “frolicking” then going on a “shopping spree” and finally concluding with information on who they’re dating. Ummm . . . is it 1953?

    • Emily C. says:

In gossipland? Yes. Every woman wants to marry every man she dates; every woman wants tons of babies, and if she doesn’t there’s something wrong with her; it’s a woman’s fault if her husband cheats on her; and how women look is the most important thing about them.

  19. Em says:

She is very mature for her age. This radio guy sound like he is the 16 year old not her.

  20. Snowpea says:

Kyle is a disgusting sexist pig who, by his own admission, shuns fresh fruit and veges and lives on a diet of coffee, diet cola, doughnuts and cigarettes.

Can you imagine how agro that would make you? He must be high as a kite on sugar and caffeine the whole time.

He is a narrowminded, sexist, misogynistic, backward hillbilly and that’s me being kind.

He had this to say to female journalist, News Limited’s Alison Stephenson who panned his crappy shortlived TV show:

“Your hair’s very ’90s. And your blouse. You haven’t got that much titty to be having that low cut a blouse. Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down.”

The fact that he consistently rates so highly in Australian radio ratings is shameful and embarrassing.

    • Jub-Jub says:

I didn’t know that about Kyle. He probably won’t live that much longer with that “diet”

  21. Zoe says:

Kyle is still on air because people listen to him – just look at the ratings released yesterday. KIIS paid all that money to have him (Jackie O is an afterthought- as we say in the business, Jackie Who?) while 2DayFM had had enough of the legal costs he was constantly incurring, and it really paid off in ratings. 2DayFM is suffering in the ratings without him but I’ll bet the staff are relieved he’s gone.

Love that Lorde wouldn’t have any of it. I think she’s pretty terrific.

  22. Claire says:

Just looking at that man makes me vomit into my mouth a little. He is SO gross and his young girlfriend must fully have to lie back and think of England big time during sex. Why is he still on radio!

  23. Meganbc says:

If Taylor Swift’s BFF was Adele, Katy Perry, or Lily Allen, I would get that, but Lorde is 7 years younger than her and a high schooler. Taylor needs friendships with peers.

  24. shanti says:

Kyle Sandilands is the most disgusting vile waste of space and I cant believe he still has a show.,…..and even worse that people actually listen to his crappy show
