Christina Hendricks’ photoshoot for The Edit: unflattering or vintage-fab?

CH8

Christina Hendricks covers the new online issue of The Edit (net-a-porter.com’s in-house magazine). She is talking about the end of Mad Men, and the final season which will premiere in just a few weeks. I’m okay with the Mad Men cast talking about “the end” right now, but I wish they would remind people that the final season is being split into two section, the first section premiering in April and the second half to premiere…TBA? Sometime next year I think. So we’re going to have to go through all of this “THE END OF MAD MEN” again next year, that’s my point. Anyway, you can read the full Edit interview here and here are some highlights:

Christina on Mad Men’s consistency: “I am a TV addict. But so often I find a show that I get really excited about, and then by the second season I’m like, ‘I don’t care anymore.’ The consistency [in Mad Men] really is something to be proud of. And that is down to Matthew Weiner [the show’s creator] and his writing.”

Learning from Joan Holloway: “It’s hard to tell. Are the things I’ve learned because of the show? Because of the character? Or is it just because eight years have gone by and I would have grown anyway? If you can’t learn or hope to gain some characteristics from playing a role for eight years, then you’ve missed an opportunity.” So what has she gained from Joan? “I think some of her ability to bounce back after something horrible arrives in your life. That and her confidence.”

How she wants Joan to end: “I want her to do the Thelma & Louise thing with Roger. Just go out with a bang. My fear is that Joan is going to turn off the lights of the office that night and just go home.”

The fashion and quality of Mad Men: “It was never a question that viewers wouldn’t get it – that combination of intelligent writing and amazing interior design, mixed with extremely well put-together fashion. I don’t think we’d seen men like Don Draper for a long time. And the women in tailored dresses… When the show came out, people were wearing jeans with their underwear out – maybe one of the worst crimes in fashion we’ve ever had. I think people were craving that tailored sense of style.”

Christina’s personal style: “I like clothes that are vintage-inspired and whimsical. You need some basics in your closet, but I always tend to go to the piece that has a sparkle on it, or a pearl.” Today, she is wearing brogues, a very un-Joan state of affairs. “These flats hurt my feet more than heels,” Hendricks bemoans with a grimace. “I’m good in a three-inch heel, that is the most comfortable for me.”

[From The Edit]

I’ve never been able to understand how heels are more comfortable than flats for some women, but I guess it happens if you, like, just LIVE in heels and that’s what your feet and calf muscles are used to. Christina also says that she’s “put in a request for several items from Joan’s apartment that I would like to purchase, I’d like those reminders.” I’m not sure if Joan’s apartment really stands out that much for me. Don’s apartment? For sure. Even Peggy’s old apartment was pretty cute. What would I want from the Mad Men set? Let me think… I’d want some of the ashtrays, just because I would imagine they have so many laying around. I’d want some of the prop liquor bottles too. Oh, yes! I’d want some of the prop advertising mock-ups! Some of those mock-ups are awesome.

Anyway… as for this editorial… I’m not feeling it. I usually love The Edit’s photoshoots, but this is not Christina’s best look overall. I think it’s the hair?

YAAASSS to the frustration over the lack of clarity about “the last season”! It’s making me so mad that I’m considering skipping this season to watch the entire final season as, — what a thought — one season. That will probably be available in Dec 2015 or later I guess, seeing as this season starts in April and they will inevitably not run the real final season until summer of 2015 and probably stretch it to the fall (just as BB did).

Christina looks amazing in the third shot with the petal-colored sweater. I hope she and Elizabeth Moss get great roles when this is all said and done. I will miss Peggy and Joan so much!

  2. Kiddo says:

I don’t like the open mouth shots nor the faux see-through lace number . Other than that, she looks quite pretty, better than usual.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. Her face looks beautiful (although I agree enough of the slack-jaw open-mouth pose). I also think clothes that minimize her bust are more flattering to her and her hair looks nice a little longer.

    • Paige says:

      She is photoshopped into oblivion!
Her choice of clothes in life is HORRENDOUS. She didn’t learn that from Mad men.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I am really bad at seeing photoshop unless there’s a curvy doorway *cough, Kim* or something to reference. Do you mean they made her look skinnier?

  3. Christin says:

This is one of the few times I’ve seen photos of her that don’t immediately draw the eye to the chest. I think she has a striking face and lovely hair. I also like the subdued vintage vibe of the fashion and the surroundings.

I’m with her on leaning toward vintage-looking pieces. I grew up in the last days of men wearing hats and dress shirts, even just to spend time talking on someone’s porch (another thing that has gone by the wayside). Ladies looked put together, too. Some of my favorite outfits are from my childhood and I would love to have an adult version of certain tops or dresses.

I like to watch MM just to spot the occasional decor item that I remember in someone’s home. I especially liked the wall clocks from that time period.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Remember when ladies wore hats with every outfit? I loved playing with my mother’s hats, with little bows and netting and flowers on the trim.

      • MrsBPitt says:

@Goodnames…I don’t think I have any pictures of my grandmothers without hats on when they were out…my grandfathers wore hats, too…and smoked pipes…I remember being a little girl and thinking those pipes smelled awful…ahh…memories…

      • Christin says:

I remember that. Going into “town” meant dressing up with a hat. I love looking at pictures of how neatly dressed and groomed everyone looked. My mother still has very specific ideas of what colors actually go together, too.

      • Kate says:

I remember dressing up to go to the movies or traveling on an airplane.

MrsBPitt, your grandfather smoke those smelling cigars too?

  4. Sullivan says:

She looks lovely as usual. Has she lost weight?

    • Zbornak Syndrome says:

I was thinking the same thing, her face looks thinner. Gorgeous photos! So jelly I don’t have (nor would look right) with red hair.

    • Lex says:

Not having the fringe on her face helps with that I think – the fringe on the forehead gives a fuller more youthful look in general.

    • Ag says:

it looks like they’ve photoshopped some pounds off?

  5. Macey says:

She looks so different to me, is it photoshop or weight loss? I havent watched MM this season so not sure what she looks like these days. Her and Peggy were my favs on there but I stopped watching after Megan pretty much took over.
I would have loved to have seen Joan take off on her own spin off show or something. I really think she could pull it off with decent writers.

    • Kiddo says:

At least in part: wide angle lens shot vertically is thinning, as is shooting from above.

    • Cheap Trick says:

Yes, I´d love a Joan spin-off! Maybe with her, Peggy and Dawn starting their own agency and being fabulous and everything.

Also Christina looks lovely in those pics.

  6. Cecilia says:

    She is a gorgeous woman.

  7. Hautie says:

I love all of these photo’s of Christina.

It is her eye makeup that is the difference for me. Very subtle. No super black liner or mascara. Soft to light brown shadows. All very pretty.

And I suspect she has a fall/wiglet on. I am about positive, her natural hair is not that long. It is a great hair piece. And she does keep her hair that red. 🙂 Her trademark bright red. Which I love too.

(Wearing high heels for years… will reshape your bone aliment of your feet. And they do ache when you are flat footed or in flats. I have always wonder if Victoria Beckham has the same problem. SJP has talked about it being a problem for her too.)

    • chaya24 says:

Also, some women’s feet just work better with a bit of a heel underneath them. Maybe not three-inches, but I know I’m way more comfortable in inch to inch and a half heels than I am flats. I even wear inserts in my gym shoes to give me that bit of a lift.

    • Coco says:

Her hair is pretty thin in real life so I’m leaving towards a wiglet in theses photos too

      • Paige says:

Recently she has been wearing a full wig to some events-can’t tell in these shots bc the photoshop has done something weird to her hairline and made her forehead huge.

  8. lucy2 says:

I think she is very pretty, but there’s something about these photos I don’t care for.
Her apartment doesn’t really stand out for me either, but I’d imagine it’s very personal to her, and she might have imagined little back stories for some of the pieces in developing her character.

  9. Ellie66 says:

She very pretty I love her hair like that. It irked me to no end that they are splitting the season..I hate that! Walking Dead does it too but crap a whole year! I will just watch it on Netflix. Don Draper was pissing me off anyway. 😉

    • Cheap Trick says:

I think they did it in order to have a shoot at next year’s award season? This year is gonna be all about the final hours of Breaking Bad, so.

  10. HappyMom says:

Usually with all of her photos all I see is her boobs being wrangled. These are the first pics where I noticed how pretty she is. They also have a vintage-y feel that I like.

  11. evadstructn says:

her face looks different. like her eyebrows have been lifted. Maybe its just the makeup, going for that ethereal, slightly alienesque look doesnt work for everyone…

  12. Damaris says:

The photo with the floral skirt is wonderful. These are fantastic photos. I can’t wait for the premiere.

  13. Kali says:

Oh my goodness, she is just absolutely stunning. That shot with her in the cream sweater is beautiful. I hope she gets another (good) tv show after “Mad Men”, she is just fantastic. I have to say, after seeing those videos on the Tom Hiddleston post the other day, I think those two would be a cute couple 😍 (and yes, I totally know she’s married…)

  14. bored_01 says:

This is gorgeous. So much better than the constant cheesecake they do of this girl.

  15. Jess says:

She’s stunning, love that she hasn’t given in to the pressure of Hollywood to be super thin, she always looks amazing and put together. I’d also like to see Joan and Roger end up together, they have great chemistry. Can’t wait for the premiere and I’ll definitely miss the show, one of my favorites.

  16. Other Renee says:

    All I see is Photoshop.

  17. Tania says:

I don’t know if it’s wonky photoshop or a wonky eye job but one eye looks bigger than the other. Never noticed that before? That said, she is a beautiful woman!

  18. Ginger says:

I think she looks beautiful and I quite like this shoot. The lighting and the clothes are amazing. And I am in COMPLETE agreement about the pants with the underwear hanging out. I work in a courthouse and you should see those yahoos trying to go through security because they have to take off their belts. So ridiculous.

  19. Jenna says:

She looks gorgeous to me. Vintage really does rock on her, doesn’t it!

As for the shoes… I have to confess. I tend towards either being completely barefoot or the other extreme ends of the spectrum in 3-6 inch heels. (I finally learned that no matter how flat the shoes or how much I slumped, I wasn’t EVER going to be thought of as anything other then an Amazon. I’m 6’2 in barefeet, so might as well have fun with it and crank up the height to 6’6!) Flats just hurt. I wear tennis shoes at the gym but even my yard work boots have at least an inch of heel on them. I have really high arches (that I’ve broken and crunched a half dozen times each) and high heels not only support my feet better – when I wear flats I get horrible cramps that make it feel like my toes are suddenly being pulled in different directions. Long as I remember to take my potassium and magnesium pills and keep to heels or bare, my feet and legs are great. The second I strap on flats, I get shin splints.

Heck – Even on the days I have to use the stupid cane (car accident that crunched my back and rheumatoid arthritis by my 20th birthday means some days it’s the stick and some days I’m fine) I stick to my heels. I can even do a decent 6 minute mile in my 5 inch heels! And have! Granted, I also can climb trees in a corset and manage getting on and off a horse without flashing the world wearing a miniskirt – so my ‘skills’ in really strange clothes is odd across the board. Everyone’s feet require different things.

  20. Valois says:

I’m not so sure about Mad Men’s consistency. The last season wasn’t that great and I feel like a lot of people are not far away from not caring anymore.

    • finola says:

Yeah, sadly I’d have to agree with you. I was such a Mad Men fanatic since the first season, but the last season kind of sucked.

  21. Suze says:

She looks pretty here, I think. It’s nice to not have her baby heads pipping in my face.

I *love* that bracelet – WANT.

  22. MissScarlet says:

    Flawless, as always.

  23. bettyrose says:

I have high arches (and I’m short) so I love heels. You can’t pull a Thelma & Louise with you former lover baby-daddy who was married when you first banged him. Kinda misses the female empowerment message.

  24. Lilacflowers says:

She looks lovely in the pictures but she is almost not recognizable.

  25. irishserra says:

She is beautiful but I think we are just not used to seeing so little boob and so much forehead. Her hair and clothing are styled so different from her usual. Her face is perfect for being framed by bangs of some sort. I’d like to see the side-swept fringe bangs on her.

    • MsT_Shady says:

@ irishserra ITA with you. She’s gorgeous but that Jessica Rabbitt -looking wig makes her forehead appear super large.

  26. Delta Juliet says:

I’m not much for heels but I can’t wear those absolutely flat soles either. They kill my back. I usually go for 2 inches or so.
