Brad Pitt in the full-length ‘Fury’ trailer: finally, he’s playing the older mentor?

fury poster

A few weeks ago, we had our first glimpse at footage from Brad Pitt’s new World War II movie, Fury. Yesterday, the full-length trailer was released. It reminds me a little bit of the trailer for another recent Brad Pitt film, The Counselor (although his part was basically an extended cameo). I’m reminded of The Counselor because it seems like just a random set of characters moving through set pieces, occasionally spouting off some war platitude. Here’s the trailer:

I actually prefer the “darker” war films to the more idealized “war is bad but the people are great!” movies. That being said, this looks super-dark. I was trying to figure out what part of the war they were in – my guess is that they’ve survived The Battle of the Bulge (December ’44 to January ’45) and the film takes place maybe Spring 1945? Germany didn’t surrender until May 8th. So… post-Bulge and before May.

I will give Brad credit for something, although it’s going to sound like a back-handed compliment: I like that he’s no longer playing pretty boys, or the “younger guy” being mentored by someone older and wiser. At some point, Brad just stopped playing those characters, although I’m sure he was still being offered those parts. In Fury, he’s the older guy mentoring the young guys. He’s the Robert Redford-archetype, at long last.

The man is aging so beautifully.

I also think that his film choices both as actor and producer over the last 10 years have been excellent.

    • Mimi says:

I disagree….aging okay. He looks a lot better compared to 2-5 years ago when alternatively he had that terrible goatee and then that long, stringy hair.

Is he still a handsome man? Yes, but smoking + sun has aged his skin….Jennifer Aniston is the same….their skin quality is not that good. For example, Jolie has heavy ish fine lines under her eyes but she has excellent skin quality….it’s smooth and elastic. Honestly, I’m surprised at how good her skin is since I thought her ~5 years of drugs would have killed it back in the late 90s to early 2000s.

      • more lies says:

Because she didn’t do 5 years of drugs?! Give me those drugs because she’s accomplished SO MUCH at such a young age and looks fabulous. Angie has had great success & talent, yet she’s so kind & humble (more drugs?), It’s no wonder Brad loves his Angie so much. His new movie looks great…hubby will definitely go to this one, too!

      • qwerty says:

        @more lies
Um, yes she did, and she openly admitted it. You know surprisingly little about her past for such a fangirl.

      • doofus says:

well, I’d bet that 5 years of drugging may be about right…maybe a couple less?

in any case, her drug use does not detract from what she has accomplished since then, and all of the wonderful thing she does today. it’s just a part of her past, which she’s spoken about a LOT, and I don’t think that Mimi meant anything bad with what she said. she was COMPLIMENTING Jolie on her beautiful skin (and it IS gorgeous) and noting that, despite her drug use, her skin is great.

        let’s all chill, eh?

    • Andrea1 says:

Totally agree @Soulsister he looks great for his age. And his choice of movies for the last 10years have been great too.

      • Camille (The Original) says:

        Agree.

This movie looks good. My hubby will definitely want to see this one too, he loves war films, and this also has a good cast.

    • JJ says:

He always looks dumb, never gotten his appeal, at all! He also is a terrible actor, zzzzzzz, boring generic pretty boy.

      • Cohen says:

Dumb? This man is far from it. I don’t get why people would say that. That he is probably not articulate doesn’t mean he is dumb.
He has made remarkable achievement in his life. What have you done with yours?

      • Soulsister says:

        @JJ boring generic pretty boy
        ——————————————————————————-
Totally disagree. His filmography is incredibly diverse. I think that when people think about Brad Pitt films, they instantly think Legends of the Fall, Meet Joe Black, Oceans etc and yes Brad has made his fair share of pretty boy pictures but for all of those, there’s a Snatch, Fight Club, The Assassination of JJ, Benjamin Button, Tree of Life, Babel, Moneyball, where it’s not about him being the pretty boy and about him being an actor looking to tell stories in films that have something meaningful to say.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @Cohen
If someone disagrees with you, there’s no reason to try to bring them down. It’s not personal.

      • BNA FAN says:

If Brad looks dumb to you, you sounds dumb to me. Brad went to Hollywood in his twenties with a Few hundred dollars in his pocket, a old car not knowing anyone there and has turned himself into one of the biggest and most successful movie star in the world. I would want to be dumb like Brad Pitt.

      • TC says:

Considering that Brad Pitt is a successful, self-made A-list award-winning actor and Oscar-winning producer, has had professional longevity for over 25 years in an industry famous for it’s unpredictability and capriciousness, and has created a tight-knit and seemingly happy and well grounded family with partner Angie, I’d say Brad Pitt is an incredibility smart man.

  2. Mimi says:

1:50 on the youtube mark…..pretty nice body for being a 50 year old……Sean Penn also has a great body for 50+

    • lisa2 says:

Noting going to lie.. I played that part over and over.. saw a screen cap on a fan site.. Yes Brad’s body is tight. And has always been so. Never seen this man out of shape ever.

I think Brad is a great actor. I don’t understand how some people love to rag on him and his acting. His filmography is very impressive. He mixes it up and has not gotten stuck in playing the same characters. He has some very ICONIC characters that people still talk about. Very impressive. I think his work the last 10 years has been his best. He doesn’t care what anyone says and does the roles he wants to do. I’m also glad he never went that Super Hero route.. outside of Megamind… and he was adorable in that.

I’ll be seeing Fury for Brad and because that generation is very fascinating to me. The men and women of that time had such strength of character.

      That poster looks fab too.

      • Soulsister says:

@lisa2 – He has some very ICONIC characters that people still talk about

Totally agree. Tyler Duerden was recently voted one of the most iconic film characters of all time. The THR has a poll currently up of Hollywood’s 100 favorite films, Thelma and Louise, Seven and Fight Club are all on that list. The Assassination of JJ is now rightly seen as one of the greatest westerns of all time while Tree of Life was Roger Ebert’s 10th favorite film of all time.

      • lisa2 says:

        @soulsister

Brad was asked in an interview about people assuming he is not a smart man. He said it didn’t bother him. Mainly because it gave him the opportunity to surprise. And he could exceed expectations.

People assume because you are not an articulate person that you are dumb. Goodness some peoples’ thought process..

Brad has been so open and honest about not being the best speaker. He has said that over and over. But I have never seen anyone that has met or worked with this man say anything less than something positive. Everyone talks about how smart and humble he is. Despite his detractors that love to say he is full of himself. He is successful and self made. An example of a True Hollywood success story.

I never understand how people demean his work yet they keep going to see his movies. I don’t see films of people I don’t like or find their acting less than stellar. But hey I thank them for helping the BO

  3. zan says:

Ahhh brad pitt… I don’t really like those glasses, take them off please
In the last picture he looks like Rob Lowe
    Still, there’s improvement

    • Andrea1 says:

The glasses are for his sensitive eyes.

    • TC says:

Doesn’t Brad wear glasses due to the incident with photographers at a press conference some years back? I l believe he stood up from his seat and about 1000 flashes went off at once and basically blinded him, slightly damaging his eyes. Hence the reason he wears glasses.

  4. Andrea1 says:

Damn Brad is crazily hot! And I love the poster.

  5. lower-case deb says:

how big is Shia’s role in Fury? he doesn’t seem to feature as much as i thought he would.

am glad to see Michael Peña in it! he’s hot to me.

and no complaints if Brad wants to follow Robert Redford’s path. i love RR very much 🙂
(and according to my TV listing, “Last Castle” will be playing in 2 hrs! *sets dvr*)

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Everyone’s hot in the trailer except for that douche-nozzle Shia (never found him attractive AT ALL). Michael Pena especially….

Brad didn’t really do it for me, when he was still a young pretty boy (because he looked way too ‘pretty boy from Middle America’ to me), but I like him now that he’s old and broke down 😉 There’s more of an ‘edge’ or weariness to looks now….

      • Soulsister says:

@VC – Brad didn’t really do it for me, when he was still a young pretty boy (because he looked way too ‘pretty boy from Middle America’ to me), but I like him now that he’s old and broke down 😉 There’s more of an ‘edge’ or weariness to looks now….
        ——————————————————————————-
        Totally, totally agree

      • Jen2 says:

Agree. When I see photos of him when he was just getting started, I just keep going. He looked so much like a woman, that it was kind of scary that a man could be that beautiful. Funny now when I see those photos, I just think that is how Shiloh will look. Now, I like how he carries himself and how he looks. He has always said he was a character actor stuck in a leading man’s body and he enjoys the character rolls much better. And he does them so well. But, his body is still rather fab, just more filled out and masculine.

    • doofus says:

re: Shia…we haven’t seen him lately AT ALL…I wonder if a) he’s seeking some sort of mental health assistance or b) maybe rehab? because dude needed SOMETHING…

Also, I wonder (since we heard about how difficult he was on set) if maybe a lot of his scenes were cut?

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I’ve been wondering too–because he doesn’t have ANY projects on the horizon. So I’m wondering if someone told him he needs to stay out of the public eye for a while, and get himself together. But I definitely think that Steven Spielberg black balled him….was he supposed to be in the newest Transformers movie–that has the racist douchebag in it (Mark Wahlberg)?

      • lower-case deb says:

        yea, i’m curious too…
iirc, when they first began shooting, it was all Brad and Shia… but now in the trailer, Shia’s barely heard.
i think the other castmembers got more lines in that clip than Shia.

as a whole, Shia’s gig got real weird real fast… somehow.

  6. Darkladi says:

Brad can mentor me out of my clothes anytime!

  7. elo says:

I think Pitt has always been and wanted to be\ willing to be a character actor underneath it all. The fact that he is so good looking overshadowed that but now that he is aging, he can play the gritty roles and the intense characters that he has always seemed to revel in like his roles in Fight Club, 12 monkeys and others. I always look forward to his movies, not just because he is gorgeous but because he is a wonderful actor. An aside, my sis lives in Missouri and met him once, apparently he is just as beautiful in real life. I like to refer to him as Brad “the face that angels kissed” Pitt.

    • kri says:

@elo-spot on. He always seemed to enjoy playing odd characters alot more. Some of his best work was done when he wasn’t supposed to be the pretty/hot guy. (12 Monkeys comes to mind). I also do not think he is dumb. He’s gt alot of interests that are outside of being a movie star. He seems pretty decent to me, although lately he has been looking like Robin Thicke and that is freaking me out.

      • elo says:

Hah, Kri, once you see the Robin Thicke you can’t unsee. I agree though, I never thought he was dumb either and he always seems like a nice guy too. I think that being a heart throb for essentially 20+ years has skewed the publics perception of him, I think his best years are ahead of him.

  8. Original Tessa says:

Logan seems to have a pretty large role. I find him quite intriguing onscreen. He was great in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I will probably see this, even though the trailer pretty much gave away the whole movie.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I do like Logan–first thing I ever saw him in were those Percy Jackson movies….I’m wondering if they’re still making more of them–I know they made the first two….

But I think Logan Lerman is going to have a very long, enduring career. He hasn’t fallen into the trap of trying to BE famous….he hasn’t confused PR stunts/being the tabloid darling for his love life with actual fame and respect with the people in Hollywood. So I think he’s going to get better and better…..

    • PerfectDate says:

I like watching Logan too. Saw the Percy Jackson movies (several times–have 3 kids) and he is very enjoyable to watch in that role. Wasn’t he in “Noah”? Didn’t see that one.
His performance looks really good in this (ok I know, hard to tell in a minutes long trailer). I wonder what he is like IRL? Has been able to stay out of the gossip mags so +1 for that. I am rooting for him to have a good career and will go see his movies.

    • Delta Juliet says:

Oh THAT’S who that is! I was staring at his face thinking “I know him…I know him…”

  9. Adrien says:

So, umm, he’ll be playing mentor to Macklemore?

  10. Mia4S says:

He’s been pretty good all along about not playing the “young buck” hero role past his time (*cough* Tom Cruise *cough*). It’s interesting you mention the Counselor because I believe he produced that. In another time he would play the Fassbender role, but Pitt seems to realize when someone younger and more raw is needed. That shows some film sense at the very least.

I wonder if Shia will do the press tour for this? Now that could be interesting….

    • FingerBinger says:

Michael Fassbender is younger, but he looks the same age as Brad. Brad could have played any of those parts in The Counselor, including Cameron Diaz’s part.

      • Mia4S says:

“Could have” being the key phrase (although any part? Let’s not push it, he’s good when he’s good but…no). My point is he didn’t. He put a younger, newer star in the lead, and not for the first time. When has someone like Cruise done that? Self-awareness and restraint will serve Pitt well.

  11. Jaderu says:

Brad can play whatever and whoever. It doesn’t matter. No matter who he’s protraying, I will always see that sexy, straggly, naughty cowboy in Thelma and Louise that first introduced me to Mr. Brad Pitt. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Been madly in lust ever since.

  12. Savanna says:

I love tough male-mentor types, in real life and on screen. (Think Sam Waterston in The Newsroom) and I love it on Brad! Good for him man. Plus he looks hot.

  13. enastein says:

    Interesting Trailer, hooked.

  14. Liz says:

Brad was the weak link in The Counselor. He is not a character actor or a good actor. Fassbender, Ralph Fiennes, Philliip Seymour-Hoffman (was), Oldman are character actors. Even the model Jamie Dornan exudes more passion and intensity in his acting roles.

  15. TC says:

Fury looks amazing all around: acting, story, directing, cinematography, art direction. I’m really looking forward to seeing this and war films really aren’t my genre of preference.

I’m sure Brad will deliver. He consistently has been now for the past 15 years. He’s a consummate actor, whether playing leading man or character actor, and actors who have worked with him ALWAYS say this about him and how he raises the stakes, bringing up everybody else’s game.

Looks like Brad’s got another potential hit on his hands.

  16. Elan says:

Well I’m definately going to see this since it got tanks and I love them. Plus the trailer looked really good. Also for the first time ever I actually find Brad Pitt attractive, huh who knew th day would ever come.

  17. karen says:

So glad they minimized Shia LaBeouf in the trailer. Can’t stand that douche.

  18. Dee says:

Unlike Inglourious Basterds, Fury actually has a very impressive cast of Jewish actors playing soldiers (Jason Isaacs, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, and Cajun-Jewish mix Shia LaBeouf). They should have used this cast for that film.
