Margot Robbie stuns in Vanity Fair: ‘I’d never sell my soul for a paycheck’

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie appears in a beachy feature for Vanity Fair. The above photo with puppies is adorable. Margot transformed into a dark brunette earlier this year for Z for Zachariah, and she’s now back to blonde. Thank goodness. She’s still pretty as a brunette but a knockout as a blonde. Margot’s been incredibly busy since she toured with Wolf of Wall Street for awards season. She’s worked on four films in the past year with co-stars including Ralph Fiennes, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Will Smith. Oh and she’s playing Jane to Alexander Skarsgard’s Tarzan, which must have been super fun.

This shoot is absolutely stunning, which is why I decided to cover the interview even though Margot isn’t scandalous. She seems very humble, and she talks about all the terrible jobs she had before acting happened. It’s impossible to dislike this woman, and here are some excerpts to prove it:

She doesn’t find herself attractive: “In my big group of girlfriends at home, I am definitely not the best-looking. I did not grow up feeling like I was particularly attractive. You should have seen me at 14, with braces and glasses, gangly and doing ballet! If I looked good in Wolf I cannot take full credit; it was because of hair extensions and makeup.”

Her work ethic: By the age of 10, Robbie was polishing cutlery at a restaurant and then advancing to “chopping vegetables and waitressing.” She worked as a housecleaner. “I’ve worked three jobs at a time. I worked in a pharmacy, an office, at a warehouse, did catering. I was always trying to save up money.” At 17, she moved to Melbourne. “I was sleeping on a mattress in a sh-tty apartment.” Her favorite job during her early Melbourne days was as a sandwich-maker at Subway. “I was really good at it! I make a mean Subway. The trick is to spread everything evenly out and cut it so well that there is never a bad bite.” Six months later, Subway hired Robbie for a commercial, and, she said, “I got paid like 20 times the amount I ever earned there.”

Chiwetal Ejiofor’s opinion: “Whilst she is truly very, very funny and enormously vibrant, Margot takes the ‘doing of it’ very seriously.”

Her hardest job: Neighbours was my initiation into the industry. It’s definitely the hardest job I’ve ever had; it was boot camp. I spent so long on it. I survived three years. I was carefully setting things up. I saved up enough to get me through three years unemployed.”

Aussie talent: “People ask me all the time what it is about Australia that produces so many big stars. Honestly, I believe it is a combination of things. Our education standards are quite high, but our industry is very limited. Yet we’re very aware of the industry. The logical step is to make a move to America. You don’t leave Australia unless you are passionate. Any Australian actor who comes to America is really committed. There are no dabblers–it’s all or nothing. If you’ve worked in Australia you can’t get away with bad behavior, like showing up late. We take our work ethic seriously. So maybe that’s why we have a good reputation.”

On tabloid rumors: “Everyone wants to link me up, make it seem like I have a thrilling love life. They tried to say Leo and I were a couple, too. Ideally, I’d want people to know nothing about my personal life. The truth is my love life is very dull. I’m in love with my job.”

On Scorsese: “Nobody else compares to Marty. I still pinch myself that I worked with this director who has been a pillar for decades and decades. I can’t believe it! It was one of the best times in my life! I’d sit down and have lunch on the set and think to myself, I’m getting paid to do this! It was insane!”

She’ll stay the same girl: “I will never sell my soul for a paycheck. I don’t need the money because I’m not extravagant. I share my house in London with five roommates. I take the Tube–it’s free entertainment! I intend to stay the exact same person I always was; my family and friends keep me grounded.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I hope Margot sticks to her guns and doesn’t ever sell her soul for a movie role. I’m sure Tarzan will be a cheeseball movie, but it’s worth it to swing from a vine with Skarsgard. It’s probably a fun movie and not some bombastic franchise like Transformers. I’ll be watching Margot’s career from afar, but I will stare at this shoot on and off for awhile. That face.

She is absolutely stunning and seems very mature and down to earth, I really like her.

I have one question though, are these amazingly beautiful women really not aware of it? Charlize Theron said something similar recently.
Maybe you’re more aware of beauty when you lack it.

    • Liv says:

When you see your own face in the mirror every day, it gets literally old. You see your face without makeup and stuff and when you then compare yourself to others you don’t look very good. I can totally relate to that.

    • Ash says:

Yes, I think a lot of women truly believe it, whether the public eye or not.

I personally, get told I’m attracted all the time, but the only time I truly believe it is if I’m having a really good day or wearing something I think looks attractive on me. I’m comfortable in my skin, for the most part, and I’m fine with the way I look.

Plus, if agree, and go, “Yeah, I’m hot,” what would we say then? Haha, know what I mean?

I watched a short documentary about how women perceived themselves, then had someone sketch them by now they described themselves, then had complete strangers give dimensions to the artist, and the results were very interesting. If I can find it again, I’ll post the link for it, I can’t remember if it was on television or online, but it was very intriguing.

      Sorry for the long response.

  2. GiGi says:

She’s a knockout! Seems like a lovely person, too!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Adorable. Pretty inside and out.

      • Kiddo says:

+1. I also love that there is a big gorgeous smile and not all mouth-breathing, duck face and fart-smelling expressions.
        How refreshing.

  3. Word Girl says:

Is it bad that I want Robbie for my Tommy? I love her. It sounds like she had a very humbled upbringing. She’s very pretty and appears to not buy into the whole Hollywood scene. Good for her.

  4. Hello says:

That’s nice but that’s what a lot of celebrities say before the check gets too big and tempting to refuse, so give it time. I like her though, I still remember her from her Australian TV show days.

  5. Abbott says:

This shoot is waaaay too reminiscent of Emma Stone’s Vanity Fair shoot from a few years ago.

I’ve always liked Margot until some gossip sites started claimed she’s the one who leaked that her and Leo, and her and Will Smith were hooking up. Allegedly, Leo completely cut her off after that.

  6. Neelyo says:

Never seen her in anything besides on the red carpet, but she gives a good interview and I like what she said about Australian actors and working on Neighbours. Good for her to recognize opportunities and be grateful for them. I’ll have to watch her in something, I have a feeling she’s going to be around.

  7. AG-UK says:

I still can’t get over how young she is she seems / looks much older. I do like Aussies a sort of no nonsense attitude and they can do pretty good American accents.

  8. Tapioca says:

Not braces AND glasses, the horror! No ponytail?

To be fair she does seem nicer and more grounded than most, but is there a beautiful starlet out there who hasn’t claimed to have broken mirrors as a teen?

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

I think that alot of women who are strikingly beautiful go thru an awkward stage where they aren’t traditionally beautiful and therefore don’t find themselves pretty. It’s almost like their strong features don’t ‘fit’ on their face. I’ve seen pictures of Angelina Jolie as an adolescent where she definitely looks awkward because she hadn’t grown into her facial features and wide shoulders yet. Those cheekbones and lips don’t have the same effect on an 11yr old.

I’m not gorgeous by any means, but I went thru the same ‘ugly’ phase until I was about 16. All of a sudden my face lost it’s pudge, my body changed, my eyebrows finally fit my face (and I discovered mascara for my white-blond lashes) and seemingly overnight people went from “Ew” to “You should be a model.”

      • Faith says:

I had the exact same I wouldn’t say I am pretty but I know some people find me attractive but I was the most fugly kid. Moderet acne, flat chested, too skinny, chubby cheek’s with a big nose is never a good look for a teenager but suddenly at 18 my skin was fine my nose fit my face and a grew a pair of tits, it was magic.

  9. T.C. says:

She’ll stay the same girl: “I will never sell my soul for a paycheck.”

Well according to her other interviews she had a “no nudity” clause in her acting contract but broke it to star in The Wolf of Wallstreet so I don’t know. She’s still beautiful and likeable but I think she’s lying to herself. She like most in Hollywood would do what’s needed to get ahead.

    • Flower says:

Maybe she is talking about the casting couch rather than her movie roles.

    • Lex says:

A relatively unknown actress had yhr opportunity to star in a Scorsese film with DiCaprio. Only someone brain dead would turn that down, nudity or not.

    • Bridget says:

It was Scorsese. Its not like she changed her mind about taking off her clothes for Transformers. We could probably chalk thay one up to ‘changing her mind’ rather than ‘selling her soul’

  10. serena says:

She’s gorgeous! She kinds of reminds me of Emma Stone, just sexier.

  11. Micki says:

Please, spare me. The interview follows the well known pattern
    1. Ugly ducking, now a trafic-stopping beauty
    2. Fantastic work etic-see old-values childhood OR distructive family past
3.I’ll never sell my (whatever) for a pay check..hm…Emily Blunt springs to mind

    • Trashaddict says:

Yeah, but she kind of blows the modesty shtick with the annoying use of first names….

  12. Mingy says:

Aww I just love that top photo, her smile, the puppies, too cute!

  13. Adrien says:

She’s very pretty. She needs to change her style and look though. She looks a bit Emma Stone, Jamie Pressley.

    • mimi says:

      @Adrien

I see it too…a mixture of Emma Stone and Jamie Pressley. Not a bad combination!

      • kri says:

Agreed on the mix, I would add Sharon Stone to it, too. She says all the right things, but most of them usually do in the beginning.

  14. Kath says:

Yeah, I’ve never heard anything bad about Margot. I think everyone from the soap world (Chris Hemsworth) gets used to working very long hours with no faffing about. And the cardinal rule in Australia is not to get “up yourself” ala Melissa George.

On the other hand, we do have Russell Crowe to balance out the Hugh Jackmans of this world.

  15. lucy2 says:

I don’t know much about her, but from this interview she seems nice and grounded. If that lasts as her career takes off, that’s sort of the test though.

  16. aenflex says:

    Classic beauty.

  17. Nicolette says:

Haven’t seen any of her films, but she looks beautiful and sounds very down to earth. Love the photo with the puppies!

  18. PattyCakes says:

    She’s got great eyebrows!

  19. Lucy says:

    She’s great in my book!!!

  20. Josefa says:

She pulled off the vintage pin up styling perfectly. Finally, an actress who can!

I like her a lot. I know, I know, they are all cute and lovely when they are fresh to the industry, but I’m hoping she’ll stay like this. In the very worst of cases – she has at least proved to be a competent actress.

  21. Whitney says:

She looks so much like a young Sharon Stone in that all red pic.

  22. cr says:

I like her, right now she seems refreshingly humble.

For Tarzan she’s got more reddish hair.
“I’m sure Tarzan will be a cheeseball movie, but it’s worth it to swing from a vine with Skarsgard. It’s probably a fun movie”
The plot of this Tarzan is that he’s sent back to Africa to investigate conditions at a mine in the Belgian Congo. So while there will be adventure, I don’t think cheeseball is their aim.

  23. Sherlockapple says:

Has big hair made a comeback without my knowledge?

  24. raincoaster says:

She is so, so talented, too. I’m glad to see her succeeding.

    • magpie says:

She is very talented. I think she will put in the work and one of the movies are bound to succeed. I think she’ll be the next big thing.
