Mo’ne Davis, 13 year old Little League phenom, got the Sports Illustrated cover

If you’ve been anywhere near a TV playing ESPN for the past two weeks, you’ve probably heard about a girl named Mo’ne Davis. She is the biggest story in sports right now. And she’s only thirteen year old!! Mo’ne has had a star turn at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. ESPN has been covering a lot of the games, which… quite honestly, the Little League games are so much fun to watch. More fun than adult baseball, anyway. I’ve been watching the games during my gym time and the ESPN commentators were absolutely freaking out (in a good way) about what an awesome pitcher & great athlete she is and how she’s such a great inspirational story for little girls and boys. And now she’s on the cover of the new Sports Illustrated. That’s how much people love her already!

Thirteen-year-old sensation Mo’ne Davis, who plays for Philadelphia’s Taney Dragons, has become the first Little Leaguer to grace the national cover of Sports Illustrated. The 5-foot-4 inch, 111-pound eighth grader is not only taking the Little League World Series by storm, but also she has captured the nation’s attention.

“Last week, this week, maybe next week, she’s owned the sports conversation,” Sports Illustrated manager editor Chris Stone said. “How often do you get to say this about a 13-year-old girl? It’s the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story.”

“The writer, Albert Chen, said it perfectly in the story, ‘She’s a lot of things to a lot of different people, all of them good things: a totem for inner-city baseball, a role model for your 10-year-old niece, a role model for your 10-year-old nephew,’ ” Stone said. “Most of all, she’s a laid-back kid just having a really good time.”

And Davis says that she doesn’t even know if she will continue playing baseball.

The nation first took notice after Davis used her 70 mph fastball to throw a shutout in the Mid-Atlantic Final that sent her team to the World Series. She followed that up by becoming the first girl to throw a shutout in World Series history, throwing a two-hitter and striking out eight in a 4-0 win over Nashville last Friday.

For good measure, Davis had an RBI single in Philadelphia’s victory over Pearland, Texas, this week, becoming the sixth girl to collect a hit in Little League World Series history.

For all her baseball accolades, Davis says her dream is to play basketball for the University of Connecticut.

“To be honest, I never thought I’d be famous for baseball,” she says. “I want to play basketball, and I could also do both basketball and baseball — but I really want to play basketball.”

She also says that she is learning to deal with the media spotlight.

“People were like, ‘Oh, there are going to be people running up to you taking pictures’ and I thought it was going to be a bunch of little kids. But it’s grown-ups! And that’s, like, creepy,” she said.

Should Davis and Philadelphia take home the trophy from South Williamsport, more interviews and more attention will certainly come her way.

I love that she’s kind of meh on her future in baseball. She probably can’t wait to get taller so she can fulfill her basketball dreams. Baseball is just what she does now, when she’s short. She already knows where she wants to go too – she wants to play college basketball for UConn. I think that will probably happen, don’t you? Also: “That’s, like, creepy” – she’s still such a kid. I love that.

Anyway, this was your heartwarming, feel-good story of the month. We needed this.

Yes! Little girls are so excited by her, and go to the games just for her. I also saw at least one little girl holding up a sign that said – “I want to throw like a girl”. Loved it.

Me Too! So cute, confident and poised! You can tell on the way she carries on and talks that her parents instilled that in her, like, nobody is gonna tell her about herself, she will show you! (And may Nothing and No one break that in her Sports career notwithstanding or whatever That is something so powerful and valuable for a young lady of color to have in this day and age!)

She’s only 13. That’s just barely hitting puberty. I was scrawny until after 13. Her big growth spurt is probably still coming.

Ha! She’s great! Kudos to SI for putting her on the cover. True role model and much needed right now. No stupid, vapid interviews, belly baring, attention getting antics. Just doing what she loves and what’s she’s good at and kicking ass doing it.

John Oliver’s segment on her was great.
    GO MO’NE!

  22. Nanea says:

My cousin’s two sons over there (near Boston) always wanted to get me and my family (northern Germany) interested in baseball, to no avail.

But a few days ago I caught my son (14) watching a report on Mo’ne. Then he let his cousins send him a link to rules etc etc!

    Go Mo’ne!

  23. Jen2 says:

This young lady has got serious game. There have been quite a few great stories to come out of this little league tournament. Great to see some kindness and thoughtfulness for a change and it is acturally real news.

  24. bettyrose says:

She’s great, and it would be great if her story generates more interest in female athletes rather than being a standalone account of the one girl who could play with the boys. I’ve always thought pitching would be the skill that breaks the baseball gender barrier.

  25. lucy2 says:

Love that she got the cover! She’s very inspirational, and seems like a smart, well adjusted kid.

  26. Leaflet says:

I love that she is blasé about the hype. It’s best to be that way. It’s best not for her to put too much stow into sports or any one thing at her age, because that way she can see a wide range of options for herself. I love the adults approaching her is “creepy” comment, hilarious. You can tell when the parents of a child are doing a fine job. It reflects itself in the child’s behavior as in this young lady’s. Love her baseball face as well. Hats off to Sports Illustrated for recognizing young females in sports.

  27. nicegirl says:

    You Go, Mo’Ne!! AWESOME!!!

  28. Kim1 says:

Keep showing girls and boys that’s its OK to ” throw like a girl”
I was little upset her team lost last night but she is still the first girl to ever pitch a shutout in LLWS.
    Girl Power!

  29. Noel says:

She has a Philly attitude – love it!

  30. Suzy from Ontario says:

Yay! I think it’s awesome she got the cover!!

  31. chix says:

I know her 🙂 she’s cool as a cucumber throughout all of this, it doesnt even phase her. Atta girl!

  32. Anna says:

I’m so proud and happy for her! I read that the only woman to play in the Negro Baseball league went to the game to meet her because she didn’t want to miss this important moment in history. I’m glad there’s a positive story this week!
