Katherine Heigl is coming back to television. Heigl is ready to come home after trying and failing to become a movie star. So, she came to the Emmys to shill her new NBC show which she hopes will be a hit. Will it? I don’t know. They ran a bunch of ads for it during the Emmys telecast but it just looked like a budget Homeland-meets-Scandal and who wants to see Katie Heigl in that kind of role? I mean, really?

Anyway, Heigl wore this vintage Parisian silk John Hayles gown. CB hated it, she said Heigl looked like a Disney villainess. When I saw Heigl on the red carpet and saw how the dress moved, I didn’t hate it though. But! It’s not that great in in still photos. I got the feeling that she was trying to recreate the vibe from a previous Emmy red carpet glory, when she wore that stunning nude Escada gown many years ago and made all the best-dressed lists. I’m trying to figure out what we could do to improve this look… maybe a different color? Maybe different bust features? That netting on her cleavage is not good.

Here’s Lucy Liu in Zac Posen. Hm. I love Lucy (ha), but I feel like this was phoning it in? Posen’s designs are usually more noteworthy – bad and good – than this blandness. I think Lucy is so beautiful and while her hair, makeup and general styling are on point, maybe this dress would have been better in another color? Maybe that’s it. Or maybe I just dislike champagne shades as a rule. Like, a rich jewel tone would have played better in almost every situation. On this gown, I think this pale color makes us miss the decent detailing on the gown. Lucy was just there to present, by the way. Even though Elementary is a pretty good show (I’m still watching), they never get nominated for anything.
