I’m interested in Blake Lively’s style but I don’t necessarily feel like she’s a consistently interesting fashionista. She used to have more fun with clothes, which meant she made some big style mistakes – think about her Marchesa phase – which was always fun to discuss. Nowadays, she is more careful. She tries to go for “cute” or “glam,” depending on her mood, and the result is usually kind of boringly pretty. Anyway, Blake got the #2 slot on People Magazine’s Best Dressed list this year, coming in behind Taylor Swift. Swifty’s style makes Blake’s style seem almost avant-garde. For the honor, Blake sat down with People to talk fashion:
Blake Lively has made headlines this year for her expanding lifestyle empire, Preserve, and has fashioned herself as kind of a humble foodie, but after chatting with the 27-year-old actress about her spot on our Best Dressed list, it’s clear that the field she’s an expert in is fashion.
“It’s such a passion of mine,” she tells PEOPLE. “That’s the reason I don’t have a stylist, not because I think I can do it better than any of these people, but because I just love it so much that it would be like handing over something.” And leave it to Lively to meld two of her favorite worlds: cuisine and couture. “It would be like making a cake and then handing it off to someone else to ice and decorate,” she explains. “Why would you do that?”
Working sans stylist truly lets Lively chart her own red carpet course. “I look at the whole story — I won’t say ‘journey’ because I saw Anna Wintour’s 73 Questions [Vogue] video (ed note: that’s the word Wintour wishes banned from fashion vocabulary) — when doing any sort of press tour or when doing multiple events, and say ok, how can I diversify these looks?” she says. “[I want] to make them exciting but also not totally manic.”
One stop on her multi-gown, ahem, journey at the Cannes Film Festival in May was a graphic yet classic Gucci Première confection she wore to the premiere of husband Ryan Reyonlds‘s film The Captive. “It might be my favorite look I’ve ever worn,” she says. “I just love that old school glamour.”
It was the gown’s “old school” charm that made it one of her contenders for the 2014 Met Gala, where she wore a different stunning Gucci Première design. “It was Charles James-inspired. If you look at the martini silhouette, you can identify that,” she explains of the black fluted accent down the center of the gown. “But because of the theme, there was a risk that someone might be wearing something similar.” True story: even Blake Lively has to consider ways to avoid a fashion faceoff.
In case you often find yourself wondering, “Is there anything that Blake Lively can’t wear?” she says that yes, there is a style the star strays away from.
“There are things that I see on Kate Moss and think, ‘I have to have that,’ but when I try it on me I look like a potato,” she reveals. “I don’t like to wear things that don’t look right on my body … that 1920s drop waist, or even ’60s mod. If you don’t cinch in the waist it looks like I’m just hiding, you know, animals? I just start to look like the cargo part of an airplane.”
The closest you’ll get to seeing Blake go mod/as a cargohold was her Michael Kors look at the CFDAs, which she says was her “faking the ’60s” because she gave the shift silhouette a little bit of a waist.
Yes, there comes a point in every woman’s life when you realize that only Kate Moss can pull off Kate Moss’s clothes. Even a girl like Blake, with her statutesque, leggy, big-boobed figure, cannot pull off the Kate Moss style. But I guess I have to give Blake a slow-clap for really understanding her figure and how to best enhance her assets. She does have a well-proportioned body, but it’s nice to know that she doesn’t feel like she could attempt swinging sack dresses and mod, boxy, ‘60s style stuff. And if Blake thinks she looks like a potato in that style, imagine how a mere mortal would feel in it?

I may be in the minority here but I think Kate Moss style is all hype, never seen her look particularly great especially in her ‘casual’ style.
Opinions on style are always subjective.
But I think Kate’s gift is how she could wear simple stuff like a parka and make it look elegant
Here in Old Blighty Kate Moss was definitely the face of Cool Britannia, someone who could wear a white T shirt and jeans and look otherwordly.
With her CK adverts she ushered in the heroin chic, which – like it or loathe it – changed the face of fashion
If hype is public perception than I agree. She had/has an image. Outside of images though I never saw anything special. I’m sure there’s an in person aspect im not aware of though.
I’m with you.
I think her style is horrible honestly. Ive never thought she looked good ever, my personal opinion..
Even the red dress ?http://www.thefashionstreet.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blake-lively-2009-emmy-awards-photos-versace.jpg or the other ?http://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3541684.ece/alternates/s615/MAIN-Blake-legs.jpg
Blake gets a bad rep. Mostly in part ot Lainey leading the charge and random fame hungry rumors. 1 thing that people let their bias on her distract from is her style. Blake has great style. She dresses to her body type and looks amazing.

And personally i’m a huge fan of her casual style. The pintrist is loaded with glamor shots, but scroll through and there’s a dozen or so casual style shots. Casual style is hit and miss with most, but blake pulls it off easily.
Yellowshaba
Yes. That is your personal opinion. I’m not sure why that was stated in such a bold way. It’s understood.
Blake is my second favorite potato. Everything she says makes me giggle. Lively Potato.
Charming is my first though.
Lol Jaderu, I was totally going to write something about you and your love of All Things Potatoes but look there goes a waffle! (I got distracted.)
ETA: can you imagine if those two potatoes made a little tater tot?
Dangit mim…now I’m hungry. Waffle cut potatoes…here I come!
It would be interesting to see Mr Tat…Charming as the star a re-made of Priscilla Queen of the Desert , styled as Kate Moss for a modern twist. Priscilla was far too Marchesa..
she f-ed up her nose.
maybe she has more in common with Kate Moss than meets the eye.
I was wondering about that, too. It suddenly looks too small for her face. Her previous nose was perfect, IMHO.
I thought something was off! It definitely looks like she did something to her nose. At first I thought maybe it was just contouring that’s the craze now, but when you look at her older photos, it is definitely smaller than it used to be. Makes her look older in my opinion, she should have left her face alone.
I looked at some other pics. These look to be just really unflattering shots here combined with makeup and how she’s adjusting her face.
I can’t help it. I really like this girl. I love her style, I think she’s beautiful and I don’t totally dislike her interviews! I used to be a hater but somehow she won me over.
Like her too.
Think she’s livelier in motion (pun intended).
Her interviews are often simple, occasionally funny and never bitchy or throwing shade at her contemporaries which is why its odd the subsequent rage it induces.
I like her, too. She seems nice.
Agree.
Same here! She’s not speaking poorly of others. She’s honest about her style and nutrition. I like her. At best she’s a bit basic in her taste, but I have to like her.
Attractive and great figure but not overwhelmingly pretty…not a patch on Mrs Ryan Reynolds Number One.
I would break my legs in those pink shoes in the last photo.
Her body is amazeballs. She got great implants and she has naturally perfect legs.
I also LOVE the black and white dress in the top pic.
I think People’s choices for best dressed were pretty much right on this year.
Blake is a total butterface though. (It couldn’t all be nice!)
In some outfits her implants look great, not too big and fairly natural. In others, they look like awful bolt-ons. What’s up with that?
I have long bemoaned the compliments thrown at her. In my opinion she’s pretty generic looking. But she looks absolutely amazing in that last picture.
She is not drop-dead gorgeous, but she does the most with what she has. That is what I like about her.
The last pic is more her own style. You can really tell when she’s styled by others. It’s usually bad.
Oh my God, her FACE in the header pic!!
I really wish ole Lemon-Face Lively would stop trying to give Kaley “Million Dollar an Episode” Cuocco a run for her money in the weird mouth department…
And why exactly is Blake everywhere again all of a sudden?? She isn’t promoting anything and from what I hear, her website is somewhat of a totally confusing disaster.
Maybe I just have some residual bitterness left over from trying to watch “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” last week. Between Robin Wright’s baby-voicing to Blake’s typically awful performance (how is she a professional actor???) I honestly couldn’t get past the first 40 minutes 😒
Robin, I expected so much more from you…
Yea…she looks really harsh in that photo, absolutely
Does anyone even really care about her at this point? Like what would it take for anyone to get excited about her? Bump watch?
She needs to quit with the “i have no stylist.” i know her stylist..
Snooze. She’s so bland.
That header photo is the greatest!
This is what’s good about going to the gum. Not only do you exercise, but you get a reminder of what a range of women’s body types exist, and what we all look like ruddy and sans make-up.
