Here are some photos from last night’s Fall Gala for the New York City Ballet. Sarah Jessica Parker has been a huge supporter of the NYC Ballet for years, and she’s usually one of the biggest names at all of their galas, which she has chaired since 2012. SJP currently serves as vice chair of the NYCB Board of Directors aw well. She usually brings some interesting/notable fashion too, but this year… well, there are issues. Don’t get me wrong, this Mary Katrantzou Fall 2014 gown is “notable.” Notably TERRIBLE.
I guess I sort of get the idea of wearing something long-sleeved. I also get the idea of wearing something that looks like a walking art piece. But the execution of this gown really sucks, right? It’s not flattering on SJP’s figure, it looks poorly tailored, there’s too much fabric generally and then the actual design is bad. Ugh! Something nice: I like that SJP has gone brunette.
Other photos… Ivanka Trump looked fantastic, although I think the dress should be a few inches longer. Ivanka’s husband Jared is cute too.
And Wendi Deng-Murdoch was there. Her dress sucked too.

I love SJP, always have, always will. However – for someone with a shoe line, the shoe choice here is really what drags it down from where it could be. Too clunky!

Totally agree. I don’t mind the gown – I think it’s quite appropriate for her age and style. But the boots… oy. A simple black pump would have been fine, or maybe something in a pop of unexpected color.

I think it’s some type of ethic or ancestral touch. Or maybe just a kitten toy.
SJP’s whole getup makes me want to flamboyantly decorate egg ornaments.
Does that mean you dress up as Liberace while you decorate them? Do you decorate amazingly? Or do you dress the eggs as Liberace amazingly?

It looks like a series of printers, linked by iPads, all printing out resumes (CVs).
I feel like it is a heavy handed nod to medieval gowns. I don’t really mind the shape, but it just looks so heavy and drab.
I think SJP is getting to that age where darker is not better and it ages her even more. Not that she needs to be a platinum blonde but it’s too dark.

She also needs to find a way to define her eyes that isn’t so harsh. Can you imagine what they black liner looked like in person?
I think she’s at the age where ‘cute’ shouldn’t be the descriptive term used. Love her style though. She’s always dancing on the edge. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Sarah is a lovely person, but her taste in clothing is awful. That dress is hideous.
I like her and I usually like her quirky fashion choices. She’s not afraid of taking a risk. But this is pretty horrible. I think I like the idea of it in theory — I get a pagan goddess vibe — but the execution is cray. That fabric — it looks like Lycra workout wear fabric to me.

Cut her some slack. She was busy enjoying her giant turkey leg at the Renaissance Faire when she realized she had a prior engagement and had to rush over without changing out of her costume.

I actually really like this dress, but I think it would look better sleeveless. It’s way too much fabric on SJP, that’s for sure.

Kind of OT and not snarky, but did sjp have her chin “bump” removed? I remember her having a mole or something and it seems to be missing in the last couple times her pics have been up.
She removed her mole (or whatever that was) several years ago. Right after SATC.
agree on both accounts – Ivanka’s dress looks like something from the rack of a low-end mall store. I would have chosen different shoes to go with SJP’s dress though.

Hocus Pocus is right. It looks better at a distance or out of focus. Up close, the material and design pattern give it a costume look.
Love that movie, and not for nothing she looked really good as a witch. Great casting and Bette was divine as always. My daughter and I love quoting lines from that film. She heard recently they were going to do a remake and we both said no. Why would you even attempt it, there’s so need. Sarah, Bette and Kathy were so good as the Sanderson Sisters. Leave well enough alone and come up with something original.
I just don’t get Mary Katranzou. That gown is something Mayim Balik would wear.
I honestly thought she was wearing a long greyish cardigan over a patterned dress. I think the 2 sections don’t work together. They would have worked individually.
I think Ivanka and her hubby are so cute together.

Eek I like the dress until it gets to her waist. The boots are just so wrong. The coloring of the dress looks lovely on her though. She looks radiant from her waist up.
So a friend is getting married in Algeria next year. I asked if I could wear something traditional to the ceremony (I am not at all linked to the Algerian culture), and he had a Berber dress made specifically for me. In bone white with lots of adornments and it reminds me of that dress a little bit.
I wouldn’t give it two thoughts were it not for the special occasion, so maybe SJP has a special fondness for it too?

SJP often takes fashion risks and I love her for that, but the dress doesn’t work well.

I came here to say the exact same thing. I happened to watch a couple of the SITC episodes on a long plane ride and she had some episodes where her makeup was minimal and she looked so pretty. That black under liner must go!!
The liner makes her eyes look smaller. I don’t care for her hairstyle, either.
Hate the dress, it’s too long. The pattern is ugly. The booties don’t work with it, either.

Ivanka Trump definitely had a chin implant done. (She had a very similar jawline to Bristol Palin- and Palin also had a similar procedure). Most of the Trumps have a similar jawline- if you look at Donald Sr. and Donald Jr.- the chin is not strongly defined which tends to make the person look like they have a double chin And from the side profile, it will make it appear as if your chin and your neck are one and the same.
I also think she had Rhinoplasty to make her nose much smaller and more refined.
I do agree that it’s good work and very subtly done.
Don’t forget the boobs.

I get this on her. It’s ugly for sure, but totally something she would wear. I know it was said on this thread once before, but she needs to lighten up her hair color a bit. I’m not sure if that’s her natural coloring either…spray tan, maybe? She looks a little orange. I also thought it was common knowledge that heavy kohl around the eyes instantly ages you. If she would tweak that stuff and put on a tiny bit of weight, she would look so much better. Sue me, I’m judgy.
SPJ is the female Benedict Cumberbatch. They are so alike ;bodily,facially and fashion wise.

I like this site for plenty of reasons, but fashion coverage isn’t one of them. Very consistently, it’s just wrong. Like, objectively just wrong. Aside from Kardashians and other trainwreck-types, I can practically count on something great being trashed as bad on this site. Sorry not sorry, but this site’s fashion coverage really, truly, consistently just BLOWS. And I don’t even like SJP (but I do love her dress, and Mary Katrantzou in general, both of which are FANTASTIC.)

Thank you. I agree completely. Ivanka is wearing a velvet halter dress straight outta the 90s which looks horrible, and is being lauded, whereas SJP is wearing something daring and rather beautiful, and is being trashed (I could do without the blue trim, it’s distracting).
I also find this site tends to call everything “dated” even when it’s actually the latest fashion. Yes, fashion coverage here is laughable.

When I saw SJP I immediately thought of an old russian movie. It’s usually shown around christmas time and called “Väterchen Frost” (Grandfather Frost). I am the ONLY one I guess, but I think Wendy’s dress could be fabulous, just not on her! It needed someone with a higher bustline, shoes that are airy and elegant, and an updo with some fun accessory, and tendrils escaping!! Didn’t like the other 2 at all, and excuse me but Ivanka’s bustline looks extremely peculiar in that dress.
Ivanka’s dress just looks so cheap. And I love SJP’s Katranzou! Its beautiful and different.
Whether she accepts it or not, SJP is 50 yrs old. Her hairstyle is too young and unflattering. Her hair color is too dark. Her eye makeup is harsh. The whole look, with the dress, is actually aging her.
