Christian Bale on losing an Oscar to McConaughey: ‘I was all good with it’

bale WSJ

Yesterday, Page Six had some excerpts from Christian Bale’s WSJ Magazine profile, and the quotes were pretty interesting. It seemed like Bale slammed George Clooney hard, sort of out of nowhere, for “whining” about the paparazzi. I disputed the idea that Clooney is, like, the biggest celebrity whiner out there. Anyway, the WSJ released the full interview, and I sort of see why Bale said what he said. There was a bit more context, it wasn’t just like Bale went off on Clooney for no reason. Bale didn’t even bring Clooney up – he was asked specifically about Clooney. Here’s the Clooney part:

AG: Speaking of George Clooney, I was just seeing all those pictures of him and his new wife being photographed in that boat in Venice, and it occurred to me that I had no idea what your wife, Sibi, looks like.

CB: I feel I should have as much privacy as anyone else.

AG: But I’ve heard Clooney railing about tabloids and privacy too.

CB: I know, but it’s boring, isn’t it? You know what I mean? It doesn’t matter that he talks about it. It’s like, come on, guys, just shut up. Just get on with it and live your lives and stop whining about it. I prefer not to whine about it.

See, he didn’t go after Clooney out of nowhere. You can read the full interview here (the photos are great!) and here are some additional highlights:

His wife liked when he was in character in American Hustle: “You know, my wife kind of liked Irv in American Hustle, ’cause she looked really skinny standing next to me. That’s what she said. She loved it. She was like, ‘Keep getting bigger. I look fantastic and skinny.’”

Starving himself for The Machinist: “I was just a bit ponderous. I’d have a whiskey and roll my own ciggy every night, and I felt, I mean physically, just nothing going on, but mentally, wow, sharp as anything and feeling absolute tranquility. I’d sleep two hours a night and sit and read a book for eight hours without moving, start to finish. There was no roller coaster. Nothing could fluster me. I might sit there taking two minutes to answer a question or just staring out the window for five hours straight.”

Whether he’s ever stormed out of an interview: “Yeah. You get people who are very rude. When you do these press junkets, you end up doing a lot of interviews, and you feel like you’ve gone a bit insane. And some people poke you like you’re an animal in a zoo, looking for a response. If you’re smart, you don’t give it to them. If you’re dumb, occasionally, like me, you give it to them. And then they’ve basically got what they wanted. I usually regret it afterwards. But some people have brought up things that are just abysmal, bringing up [the 2012 shooting incident in] Aurora in a way that I could not fathom… And that haunts me to this day, haunts all of us who were involved. I know it haunts Chris [Nolan] as well, because we were stuck in a hotel in France when it happened.”

Losing an Oscar to Matthew McConaughey: “What did I look like? I haven’t watched it. I put my head down, didn’t I? (Laughter) There were a number of occasions when I was like, oh f—, I’m the only one sitting down. It’s going to look like a statement. I’m not trying to make a statement; I’d better stand up. I hate it when you’ve got to get excited about every damn thing that happens. There are certain moments that you go, “It doesn’t mean much to me.” I hate to sound like an ass, but I was all good with it. Yeah, I didn’t mind at all. I was like, “Oh, right on, Matthew, nice guy, mate. Good for you.” But whatever. It was a fun night; it was an open bar.

[From The WSJ]

I can actually feel Bale trying to not say something mean about McConaughey. I feel you, bro. He also shades director McG, who he worked with on Terminator: Salvation and says that “I won’t be working with him again, but I wish him very well. Okay?” It really feels like the WSJ reporter was trying to get Bale to talk some trash and Bale gave in a few times, but avoided the traps a few times too.

Here are some photos of Bale promoting Exodus in Paris yesterday:

Uh, I call BS on the WSJ reporter saying he had “no idea” what Bale’s wife looks like.

That seems like bait and a bit of a set up to placate Bale and lead him into throwing shade towards Clooney.
    Which Bale happily obliges.

I have no idea what Bale’s wife looks like. Doesn’t mean I never saw a photo of her but it means that I didn’t see a 1000 (or in the case of Clooney and Amal 1000000) and I wouldn’t be able to recognize her. It was probably a bait but it was a logical one.

  2. Abbott says:

It takes a brave man to whine about another man’s whining.

  3. Jaderu says:

Aw crap. Bale/Clooney Smackdown 2014 cancelled.
    Oh well.
Still love me some Bale, I just wish he hadn’t agreed to do Exodus. The casting is so disappointing. Bale and Sigourney Weaver are on my naughty list this year.

  4. Kiddo says:

ARGGHHH…THINKING ALL THE MEAN THINGS about MM. I rebuke the niceness here.

  5. lunchcoma says:

I get the feeling that Bale’s feeling about the Oscar is that he already has one, will probably have several more chances, and that this might be McConaughey’s one shot – but that he realized that isn’t something you can say.

His comments about Clooney aren’t actually a big deal in context, but I do think there’s some covered up snark in the rest of the interview.

    • Annie says:

I think he and McConaughey are actually friends. They were in Reign of Fire together years ago and there are photos online of the two laughing it up at one do and hugging each other at a previous Oscars.

That being said, Bale could not have been too happy about losing the Interstellar lead to McConaughey (I’m sure he thought Nolan would continue to use him) or the thought that, with the Oscar, McConaughey would become bigger competition for future roles. Already it appears that Bale has lost the Randall Flagg role in The Stand to McConaughey.

      • David says:

Josh Boone (director) denied on Twitter that McConaughey was cast already. He said he didn’t even have conversations with him. A ew months back, the director also said that it’s Bale that he wants for Flagg and he wants Matt for Stu. Regardless, I don’t see both wasting their time on the film.

It is true, you don’t have to get excited about every little thing, I don’t clap at everything and everyone but that doesn’t mean I don’t care.
Unfortunately people in his position get dissected all the time so he has to go with the flow I guess
I always liked him I just wished he loosened up a little bit. His character in AH would make an awesome Les Grossman twin with Tom Cruise… IDK why I though of that

  7. noway says:

The reporter really wanted him to go after another celebrity. For the most part he didn’t really bite, but the reporter won anyway with the out of context quote making it seem worse than it was. Don’t worry though George and his newfound tabloid fraternization have moved on to fresh Cindy Crawford gossip, so this will die down for Bale.

My favorite part of this article was his wife on him in American Hustle. She is funny!!! I am sure he did make her look really good.

    • Dara says:

I know next to nothing about her (which is good I think), but she seems like a good egg from what little has been mentioned. She seems to take being married to a very intense guy in stride. It has to be hard at times though. There was an interview around the time of the Machinist – when he dropped so much weight – where he said that she actually hid in the bathroom to eat because she felt so bad for him.

  8. lucy2 says:

It’s well worth reading the whole interview, and seeing the questions the interviewer asked gives much more context to the answers he gave.

  9. I loved the part where he talked about how his wife was one of the stunt drivers (in a police car) chasing him in one of the Batman movies. That is so COOL.

  10. Laura says:

i just realized something. Robert murdoch is involved in Bale’s film exodus at the same time i heard that clooney will direct “hack attach” which exposes how murdoch’s company was hacking into people’s phones. the way clooney was mentioned by the reporter and how bale played along makes me wonder if Murdoch was sending a message to clooney because this interview harmed clooney’s image and now many people r assuming that clooney is complaining about the paps AFTER his wedding.

  11. minime says:

He is such an incredible actor! I think his interview was nice and direct. Yes, he’s not playing the game of the ultra nice guy but he was in no way offensive and all the few very subtle things he said of Clooney are true. The guy made the Wedding circus of the year, even surpassing Queen reality TV and Yeezus after he babbled about the Media being so intrusive. Christian Bale is a very good example that when they want they can keep a LOT under wraps.
Bale is a great actor and not a douche, what a rarity!

    • Miss M says:

I agree ! I even posted a couple of links where Clooney has complained about media/paparazzi.

  12. Renee says:

Every time I read an interview with this guy I laugh. I think that his cantankerousness is amusing but I also think that he is a genuinely funny and insightful person who might not take himself as seriously as he seems to???

    • I Choose Me says:

That’s what I get too but then again I’m a long time lover of Bale so I’m probably a tad biased.

    • Lucinda says:

Exactly. He’s human. He screws up sometimes. He owns it and he doesn’t whine very much. I think he has lightened up quite a bit in recent years.

  13. serena says:

*claps* well said, I really enjoy reading his interviews.

  14. mkyarwood says:

‘It was an open bar.’ ha.

    He’s awesome. So real.
