James Bond will have an age-appropriate Bond Girl in the new film, ‘Spectre’

wenn21984055

While Skyfall really didn’t make much sense story-wise, it was probably one of the prettiest James Bond films ever, and I enjoyed the gradual changes they’ve been making to the Daniel Craig-led Bond franchise. And by “changes” I mean “a return to the Ian Fleming source material.” In Skyfall, we got some great payoffs when (spoiler??) Naomie Harris was introduced as Miss Moneyponey, and Ralph Fiennes began his tenure as the new M, the head of MI6, taking over from Judi Dench. It seems like the Bond producers were happy with the way Sam Mendes handled the franchise, because Mendes is coming back for the new Bond film.

Producers organized a big event today in England to announce the new line-up for the latest Bond film, which will be called Spectre. If you’re familiar with the Bond canon, you know Spectre is an evil organization hellbent on world domination/destruction. Some of the casting choices were rumored for weeks/months now, like Christoph Waltz and Lea Seydoux. But there are two names that I wasn’t expecting: Andrew Scott – also known as Moriarty from Sherlock – is going to play another MI6 agent, and Monica Bellucci will be a Bond Girl!! Holy hell, an age-appropriate Bond Girl?! What is the world coming to? Monica is 50 years old and Daniel Craig is 46! OMG.

With a fevered level of anticipation usually reserved only for the countdown to the motion poster promoting the teaser for a trailer, the world’s press gathered on the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios for the reveal of the title, cast and other details of the 24th James Bond film. With 007’s last entry, “Skyfall,” being easily the most successful entry in the series to date, a billion-dollar, Oscar-winning smash, and the same creative team, led by director Sam Mendes, returning for the new outing, hopes have certainly been high for the new picture, and despite Sony’s recent hacking problems, details have mostly remained under wraps. The name of the film, then? “Spectre.”

As fans will probably realize, and as Mendes hinted ,the title seems to refer to the supervillainous organization led by Bond’s greatest foe, Blofeld. And who’ll be playing him? Well, Mendes wasn’t confirming anything, but did confirm that Christoph Waltz was joining the cast as a character called ‘Oberhauser’, so that seems like a fairly good indication, unless there’s some bait-and-switch going on.

Beyond Waltz, Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Naomi Harris, Ben Whishaw and Rory Kinnear are all returning, while “Sherlock” and “Pride” star Andrew Scott is joining on the MI5 side (though as he was rumored to be playing a villain a few days ago, perhaps he’s not entirely to be trusted). Beyond that, the previously rumored Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci look to be the Bond girls this time around, as characters named Madeleine Swan and Luciana Sciarra, while “Guardians Of The Galaxy”‘s breakout Dave Bautista is also on board as Mr. Hinx, likely to be the ‘iconic’ henchman in the vein of Odd Job and Jaws that’s been said to be part of the film too.

Beyond that, Mendes wasn’t spilling too many other beans, though confirmed that editor Lee Smith and DoP Hoyte Van Hoytema, both fresh off “Interstellar,” were joining the creative team, and that the film shoots in London, Rome, Mexico City, Tangiers and Austria, starting Monday.

[From Indie Wire]

YAY BEN WHISHAW IS BACK!!!! God, I love him as Q. I love that Ben Whishaw got the approach to play Q and that he thought, “Oh, that might be fun!” Ben is such a serious actor, known for serious work. It’s lovely to see him as part of the Bond franchise. Anyway, as for the rest of it… it’s coming together nicely. It will be interesting to see how they update the Spectre villains for the modern age. I enjoy how Waltz is just “leaning in” to the fact that he’s just going to get villain roles these days.

Good lord, Daniel Craig AND Monica Bellucci on screen together?

    *fans self*

    • Frida_K says:

God, I know. She is a total love tigress extraordinaire. And he’s just so… mmm. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

      Together, they will be smoldering.

      Can’t wait!

    • Mia V. says:

      It’s pure hotness.

    • Delta Juliet says:

I know, right?!?! Good Lord I’ve got goose bumps.

    • Jenns says:

Seriously. He is my crush and she is my crush. And I LOVE that they cast a Bond girl over the age of 40.

      • Kali says:

I still cannot comprehend that she is that age. It’s beyond Dorian Grey painting level agelessness.

      • Yana says:

Really? Because I am a huge fan of Monica’s but she definitely looks her age. Or I should say she looks great despite all the tanning and smoking she does.

      • Kali says:

@Yana – it might just be a good photo for the article and, admittedly, I haven’t seen some of her movies for a few years. The movie mental image association I have for her is always going to be “The Matrix” in that white outfit.

      • samab says:

she shows her age but I really appreciate she didn’t any plastic surgery ,and if she did,it’s classy and very subtle.Once said that, the girl can’t act .Horrible voice ,very bad acting. She is good only for certains roles.

    • Julia says:

I wanna make out with BOTH of them 🙂

  2. Ginger says:

YAY! Monica Bellucci and Daniel Craig?! I’m swooning already.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Age appropriate Bond girl makes me really happy.

    • AustenGirl says:

Me too! This is fabulous news!

    • Trillion says:

What? No 20 year-old nuclear physicist with playboy centerfold looks?

      • FLORC says:

I think that was Denise Richards and she looked far from 20. The only young 20’s Bond Girl I can recall was the For Your Eyes Only. The Greek love interest.
The rest all appeared much more of 30’s.
Oh! And Dr. No, but that was the very 1st after all.

      • anne_000 says:

@Trillion – I agree with you about Denise Richards in that Bond movie. It was so unrealistic and silly for her to play a nuclear physicist and at her age too. Like they couldn’t have gotten a 30-something beautiful actress with a bit more depth?

      • FLORC says:

        Anne_000
That movie was all around awful. There’s a handful that have no redeeming qualities and was horrible. That was 1 of them. The mistake hasn’t been repeated since (bar Halle’s.).

    • Val says:

Yesssss more good news for today! Yay!

      Also lol @ Trillion

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Me too!
I am in my mid-thirties, but I have a very strong desire to see more 40+ women being represented on screen. Woo hoo to this!

  4. BengalCat2000 says:

Eva Green was my favorite Bond girl, and wasn’t she age appropriate? I love this group of people too. Naomi and Ben are such unique and fresh choices. This will be very interesting… Cannot wait!

    • Delta Juliet says:

She was my favorite too! That was also my favorite Bond movie.

      • AustenGirl says:

Agree on both points! Love, love, love her! Eva for-eva! That movie humanized Bond and the Bond girl unlike any other in the franchise.

    • alreadyready says:

I agree on Eva. Excellent. The script was great, too.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

She was mid twenties to Craig’s early forties. In other words, the usual Hollywood pairing.

      • jammypants says:

I thought Craig was around 36/37? I remember seeing reports say he was one of the youngest Bond actors casted.

    • Etheldreda says:

Eva Green is 12 years younger than Daniel Craig, so I wouldn’t call that pairing ‘age appropriate’ by anything other than Hollywood standards.

    • Katenotkatie says:

Eva Green was so stunning in Casino Royale. Loved her and Daniel Craig together. I love Daniel Craig with almost anyone, so long as he fixes them with that stare. Yum.

      • BengalCat2000 says:

Daniel, Mads and Eva… the visual combination of their hotness in one movie makes my head explode.

  5. don't kill me i'm french says:

    What huge european casting! French,italian,german,english…

  6. minx says:

    Sizzling.

  7. Lb says:

I adored Q! So glad to see him back. I actually really enjoyed Skyfall and the opening sequence with Adele’s song was very memorable.

  8. Olivia says:

    Yes, yes, YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!

  9. God, I love Monica Belluci. She is so gorgeous.

And I think I’m the only one who hated Skyfall. I don’t know why, but I skipped through half of it (my mom says I watch tv/movies like a man). I loved the new Q though.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

You’re not alone. As Kaiser said, the story made no sense. Let’s go out to the middle of nowhere, unarmed, with no communications or backup, and then tell the bad guys where to find us – helluva strategy. M was portrayed as a weak and simpering old lady letting James call the shots. And then she dies thanks to this idiotic plan. Bah.

    • anne_000 says:

Skyfall has so many silly bits in it that made no sense. Just about as Bond was going to shoot the villain, he stops so that the villain can make his little speech, get the train in the correct position, then bomb the ceiling so it comes right at Bond? Really?

And how about that not so small tracker given to Bond by Q? Like the villain (I know, I know, I can’t even remember his name) wouldn’t have Bond patted down and find it?

And why bring the villain to HQ and have only one guard on him inside that same room where the invisible cage could be deactivated by a power blackout?

Also going to Skyfall totally unprepared and getting the gang of bad guys there? And why did the bad guys decide not to go at them full force? Also, why was the caretaker walking around with a flashlight at night when the area was already lit up by the burning fire?

So many stupid points in Skyfall and every other Bond movie. This is why I don’t like any of them even though I end up watching some of them. They don’t make much sense.

    • Andrea says:

Skyfall was too long and drawn out. I found myself half-asleep by the end not remembering the plot at all.

  10. applapoom says:

I thought Mendes said that he wasn’t interested in doing any more 007 movies? Hope this means the script is excellent.

    • LAK says:

He did. There has been A LOT of negotiation to get him back on board. They locked him into 2 more bonds when he finally agreed.

  11. lisa says:

    Yes!!!!The casting is awesome.

  12. someonestolemyname says:

Monica is beyond Beautiful, wow She’s a Goddess!

and Christoph Waltz ….glorious, sexy distinguished man.

  13. Birdie says:

Looks like I am going to watch my second James Bond movie just for Andrew Scott! He is amazing!

    • Leigh says:

Agreed. I adore Andrew Scott. Moriarty has been, and will always be, the best part of Sherlock to me. I love him so much I even watched all of The Town (BBC).

  14. Talie says:

    Monica is HOT.

  15. scarf girl says:

I am actually going to see this in a theatre. I adore Andrew Scott-so fabulous-and maybe if we are lucky he will have scenes with Ben Wishaw. And hooray for Monica! I think she is gorgeous.

  16. kri says:

That woman will be hot when she is 90. And Andrew Scott more than held his own on Sherlock. So delicious. I am thrilled with this line-up!

  17. happymama says:

Progressive and refreshing. Nice casting choice.

  18. Micha says:

    Dope!!! Very excited!

  19. The Original Mia says:

Awesome news! I love Monica. She & Daniel will burn the screen up. Cannot wait.

  20. Amanda_M87 says:

Good casting choices. Will definitely go see this movie when it’s in theater, and I hardly ever go see movies anymore.

  21. Artemis says:

    My Italian Queen slaying everybody!

  22. Gwen says:

    That’s really great casting!

  23. Carrie says:

This will be a good one. She is absolutely GORGEOUS and a very good actress.

  24. Hey, hey, my, my says:

Monica looks so awesome because she isn’t starving herself. She looks hotter than the other two actresses who are younger and thinner.
If Bond were an American film they would never cast a Bond girl over the age of 30. They keep casting JLaw in roles for women 10 years older than her if not more.

  25. scout says:

Very cool to choose a mature woman with curves and my son is gaga over the Bond car, Austin Martin DB 10, it’s to die for!! Can’t wait until Nov 2015!!!
I am in love with the bad guy too, Christoph Waltz!!!

  26. Ellen Smith says:

Naomie Harris is beyond gorgeous. Looking forward to her flirtatious, teasing relationship with Daniel Craig.

  27. tasha_nat says:

Yay! Love the casting. I’ll take more Ben Whishaw please.

  28. Cupcake says:

I think they should be required to have a Bond girl over 40 in every movie from now on!

  29. Brittney B says:

I had no idea Lea Seydoux was going to be in this!! She looks almost unrecognizable compared to Blue is the Warmest Color (she was the one with the titular blue hair).

I love Eva Green, but this has to be the best Bond Girl lineup of the whole modern franchise.

  30. Aminta says:

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Perfect choice. So excited!!!!! 😍😍😍

  31. Lucy says:

This looks SO good and filming hasn’t even started yet.

  32. minxx says:

My favorite Bond is Casino Royale and, naturally, my favorite Bond girl is Eva Green but this cast is fantastic. I’m so glad they finally have Monica Bellucci in a Bond movie – she’s my age and gives me hope that one can look great regardless of age: she doesn’t seem much older than Lea or Naomi.

  33. FLORC says:

    Not A Fan of this.

I get Bond is more realistic in an age and violence sort of way. He bleeds, breaks. He’s not the Bond of the old days sleeping his way to the latest villian and then outsmarts him.

He looks older and not like he just got a facial, but he’s still ballparking a specific age. Does that mean the Bond Girls have to look like time has been rough to them as well? Or are we just introducing much older women to say so?
Some of the Bond Girls have been accomplished and held jobs that required lengthy education. So, they atleast are mid to late 20’s at the very least.
Many others are simply young girls Bond blows off steam with.

I’m such a fan of the books and movies. I just hope they give her a character that isn’t older for the sake of hiring an older actress. This just seems like PR based.

    • Esmerelda says:

I believe that the target audience’s age is also rising… these are not Marvel movies for teenagers- The European, older cast, the artsy director, a certain conservative violence (no cities blown up or spilling guts) …I think they’re aiming for the 35+ crowd (and they need to get them all, so it’s no longer so totally geared toward wish-fulfillment for men).

      • FLORC says:

        Esmerelda
Maybe. The new bond format certainly brings in a younger crowd that too desensetized to go for that old format.

  34. Dotty says:

Now, if we could only evolve to calling them Bond Women.

    • Frida_K says:

I don’t know…I think that “Bond female persons” has a nice ring to it.

      😉

(all humor aside, yes I agree with you completely)

  35. phlyfiremama says:

    Definitely a theater movie~!!!

  36. Grant says:

Monica Bellucci is breathtaking. Just jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

  37. Dr.Funkenstein says:

    Bravo, and about time.

  38. Lorelei says:

How many more Bond movies is Craig signed on to? I simply can not understand for the life of me his appeal. He’s in no way hot or even good looking. Those washed out eyes and the nose, and the wrinkles, and the hair…I so miss Pierce Brosnan, that was a smoking Bond.

    • Ethelreda says:

Daniel Craig is one of those people. Sometimes he looks very very hot. Sometimes, as in these pictures, he looks very very ordinary. Unfortunately, as time passes, the latter situation is becoming more common for him.

    • FLORC says:

Because the franchise got a reboot. It’s more gritty and realistic. Less playboy who never misses a massage appointment outsmarting evil villians.
The chase scenes, fight scenes, and overall feel is more real world. Bond can miss that boat sailing away from the dock as he chases it down the pier with his motorcycle. He does get knocked out and injured after that explosion. Not back up dusting himself off before giving chase with nearly perfect hair.
      Craig looks like Bond should.

And (imo) his appeal is what you dislike about him. He’s rugged. Great for a toss. Very masculine. Not a prettyboy, but a Hot Man.

      • Lorelei says:

Well that’s just it Florc, he’s in no way a hot, rugged man to me. He’s an ugly ugly man. And my tastes aren’t much of the prettyboy variety, I would choose Sean Connery circa 1999 (in Entrapment) over many other so called hot guys.
As for why he’s Bond, I get they are moving toward a more realistic portrayal of the character, but my question was not why, but for how much longer must we suffer his presence.

P.S. Yo can not possibly tell me Pierce Brosnan was not a Man. A super elegant sexy gorgeous man.

      • FLORC says:

        Lorelei
Craig will be Bond at least 1 more time! 🙂 Squee!

And Craig really pulls off that smolder in motion. When Dreamhouse came out and he walked with Weiss on the red carpet with her those were hot looks.
I find him very attractive. Past what i’ve said if you don’t see it, I just don’t know.

And Brosnan was my 1st Bond crush! He’s Cute. Elegant, And at times came off very sexy. He also came off as a playboy and less strong or intelligent. That could have been the character though. I think it was Tomorrow Never Dies where he kept looking at his female co-spy while she was trying to work on the goal at hand he’s giving her bedroom eyes. My thought was “Clock Is Ticking, Not the time Bond!” Took me right out of the movie.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

@Lorelei – completely agree with you, I don’t get his appeal at all either (I find him fug. When I think of ‘ruggedly good looking’ I think of Clive Owen). DC is a good actor, but I don’t like or buy him as Bond.

  39. Erica says:

OMG I’m so excited for this! Monica is one of my longtime crushes. She is so gorgeous and I just love everything about her. 🙂

  40. Camille (The Original) says:

I’m not a fan of DC as Bond, but the rest of this cast is great! For once a Bond film that I might actually want to watch!

    Love Monica, she is divine.

  41. anne_000 says:

I’d take Monica Belluci at 50 any day of the week over the average 20-something actresses nowadays.

Something has to be said for the depth and breadth of a full grown woman, physically, emotionally, and intellectually .

  42. Winnie says:

Lea seydoux!!!!! For the first time in my life I will watch a bond film!

  43. The Other Katherine says:

Monica Bellucci is FINE. (As in sexy-fine, not just-okay-fine.) Good choice.

Maybe we can retire the phrase “Bond girl” now?
