Tom Hiddleston is Neil Gaiman’s second choice for the lead in ‘The Sandman’

dragonfly

I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman before, but perhaps I’m mistaking CB for my dream journal (???). Yes, they’re making The Sandman into a movie and Joseph Gordon Levitt has something to do with it. Everything is still in the early stages, but the “early stages” are always fun because that’s when we get to throw casting rumors against the wall to see what sticks. Neil Gaiman has always been a Cumberbitch – Benedict Cumberbatch has worked on various projects with Gaiman before, and Gaiman has been on the record about Bendy being a good choice to play Morpheus/Dream. But now that Bendy is booked solid for the next two years, Gaiman is publicly moving on to The Other Posh Englishman (also known as The Other White Meat). Commence dragonflying!

David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is still in the early stages of development, but Gaiman has some ideas about who should play the titular lead role, who sometimes goes by the name Morpheus.

“It’s a funny thing with Morpheus. Again, it’s that thing where you look around and think, ‘Yes this person would be a fantastic person’, and then time passes,” Gaiman tells RadioTimes.com. “There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict [Cumberbatch] was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus’. And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up.”

Cumberbatch is now tied up with Doctor Strange, but Gaiman has another actor in mind, and it’s a Marvel Studios veteran.

“Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”

The fact that Gaiman, who is creatively involved as a producer on the film, is talking about potential actors for the role is a little surprising, simply because rumor had it that Gordon-Levitt was looking to both direct and star in the film. Perhaps those plans have been altered so that Gordon-Levitt can focus on directing what seems like quite a challenging adaptation.

[From Comicbook.com]

I’m not a comic book person, nor am I a Neil Gaiman person, so I don’t have a dog in this hunt. But I do have the feeling that more and more parts are going to come to Tommy Hiddleston this way. Directors, writers, producers and casting directors are going to look for a “Benedict Cumberbatch-type” and when Bendy isn’t available, Tommy will be their next call (that’s what happened with Crimson Peak, right?). I’m not saying that as an insult to your man, Dragonflies. A lot of great work is done by the second choice actors, you know? And if it means MOAR HIDDLES, then who am I to complain? I’ve actually missed our Dancing Bear this year. I hope 2015 brings us Hiddles Overload. YAY!

Oh, and here’s another little piece of casting news: JK Simmons has been added to the cast of Kong: Skull Island, which will star Tom Hiddleston. I like that bit of casting news! And hopefully this will be one of JK’s first roles after he wins an Oscar for Whiplash.

Umm… I actually always sort of assumed that out of the two, Hiddleston is much more famous and more of a “first choice” actor than Cumberbatch – was it only my impression?…
(not comparing their acting abilities here, just wondering about the level of popularity)

    • Siedhr says:

I thought the same. And hasn’t Hiddles made more money than Cumberbatch?

      • Lilacflowers says:

The films he has been in have made more, yes, but he hasn’t had the lead yet.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

By make more money, do you mean earned more? Or has he been in the more successful films? Surely Tom’s “stock” has gone up since TDW, but he has also been in some fairly quiet indies, and of course he has had a year of not appearing in much at all other than Coriolanus.

Question: I know there are websites that track which stars are “earners,” and there are certainly plenty of people in the industry whose whole job is to crunch these numbers. Are there any good online sources for this info?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MissJupitero, I don’t know what was originally meant by “makes more money”. I was referring to box office. TH may have made some small films but he was also in one of the highest grossing films of all time. The other, not so much. Neither of them would be commanding high salaries at this point. Other than STID, BC has not been in any box office bonanzas

      • jammypants says:

Miss Jupitero, a source that might be helpful:

    • Linn says:

Not sure why you would think that? Imho Cumberbatch seemed to get far more and more interesting roles in the last few years, even if those where only small parts.

Most people probably don’t know Benedicts name but he has been in some pretty big and diverse movies:
      -Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
      -Atonement
      -Star Trek Into Darkness
      -12 Years a Slave
      -The Fifth Estate
      etc.
Plus Sherlock is really popular and many Hobbit/LOTR fans know him as Smaug.

Hiddleston is mostly known to the Mainstream for Loki and maybe Midnight in Paris.

And wasn’t Benedict supposed to play Tom’s role in Crimson Peak as well but left the movie?

      • 'P'enny says:

Tom is five years younger and stuck in theatre land ‘before Loki’ and ‘after-loki’ spent 6 months a year in Marvel-world. Oh Benedict has all that Marvel World skip and jump and weeks hanging around green screens waiting for a scene to come along…. ddddde

    • Mia4S says:

Understanding that it has nothing to do with talent/attractiveness etc. (all subjective) Cumberbatch is definitely higher in the food chain than Hiddles. It’s leading man credibility versus supporting character actor. Perception in Hollywood too counts for a lot. If Eddie Redmayne gets an Oscar nod he will move slightly ahead too. Tommy boy needs to make some moves but he seems to be on a decent track.

Oh and no way he does Sandman while under a Marvel contract, no way they’d allow it.

      • **sighs** says:

The refreshing thing about Hiddles is that he doesn’t move in a linear fashion in his career choices. I think that’s what is going to give him more longevity in the industry. Cumberbatch, much as I love him, is turning into a 1 or 2 trick pony. I think their acting styles are completely different. Yes, they’re both posh with cheekbones, but I think that’s where the similarity ends.

I apologize in advance for the comments that may ensue. I enjoy both of their work. Am not trying to pit them against each other. I think they are way more different (in style) than everyone thinks.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@**sighs**, I agree. I think their styles are very different as are their choices in roles and I find the constant comparisons really annoying. They aren’t interchangeable.

      • j says:

        yeah, they’re totally different.

imo cumberbatch has been typecast since sherlock and is just picking the best out of what hes getting until he’s stockpiled enough bread, going by how his pre-sherlock roles were more diverse. curious to see what’ll happen now that he got a good paycheck deal (yeah i realize Marvel is cheap but still pays better than anything else hes ever done so far)

im glad tom got marvel earlier on in his career

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        I agree.

Posh Englishman with cheekbones though is about what most people out there are going to register, which is too bad.

    • Ashling says:

I have the opposite impression. Tom is more mainstream famous due to Loki, but BC is seen more as a serious leading man in the industry.

      • icerose says:

Tom appears mainly in leading roles an in the UK has always been considered a serious actor for his theatre work and art house films. It is only in the USA where Loki is seen as his pivotal role.
Ben has been around a lot longer and has done more TV including all the usual Agatha Christies which most young UK actors pass through on the what to fame.
Tom took off with lead roles in art house films and awards for his first theatre productions he appeared in so it has been a much quicker rise to fame.

    • icerose says:

strange because in an article some months ago he had them both down as his choices with no preference,
The radio times is very much into BC clickbait and is pretty good at twisting comments and taking them out od context so I did not give it much credibility.
The other thing they do is wipe the comments each day and repeat the article infinitum as if it is new.

    • vee says:

I see Hiddleston as the more famous and talented as well, but may be due to The Hollow Crown and Coriolanus. He’s a damn Lawrence Olivier in my head. Not saying that I don’t love Cumberbatch as Sherlock, but I need to see his Hamlet and Richard III first.

  2. Ari says:

So much better choice than Cumberbatch regardless of being 2nd – after seeing him in only lovers left alive I can totally see it plus his range IMO is broader than Cumbys lol (thats just me though)

    • Melanie says:

Came here to say just that Ari. Hiddleston did an amazing job in Only Lovers Left Alive, I really bought him as that character.

I’m a die-hard Gaiman/Sandman fangirl. I’m old so I’ve had a lot of actors on this wish list. Of course, Peter Murphy would have been an amazing choice but we know that ship has sailed. If I recall correctly, I also believe Julian Sands was considered for the role a million moons ago. At the time, I thought he was a good pick. I disagree with Gaiman on Depp. He was never a good choice, even before he became the Scarf Monster and I still loved him. This role calls for someone that is tall, dark, thin, gaunt, or can at least portray tall. Depp never registers as tall, no matter what.

I think Hiddleston would make a good Dream. He does a good Loki so I think I can see him pulling this off. Much better than Cumberbatch, who most definitely doesn’t have the cheekbones. Neither does Joseph Gordon Levitt.

It’s actually hard for me to pull someone out of a hat that would fit this part well nowadays. Dream and Death are iconic in my mental library. Knowing so much about how these characters were constructed and drawn, it’s difficult for me to imagine anyone being able to capture their dark beauty.

  3. Miss Jupitero says:

The role is too much like Loki, too much like Adam. Another f*cking black wig role. Of course Gaiman wants this (he is also a Norse myth geek btw) but it would make Hiddles into a one trick pony.

    • Sixer says:

I was also thinking Adam reprise. Dream is based on the Bauhaus guy, isn’t he?

    • Lilacflowers says:

And some of the storylines take place in Asgard. He doesn’t need to spend more time in Asgard.

    • icerose says:

well if he is going to go one trick pony for a bit it is better to go with something like Adam and the Sandman that couple of mediocre bio’s and endless socially awkward genius’s.
Tom has just done 3 diverse roles s I am not to worried about his diversity as he wil always find something new to bring to a character,
I would actually go with Mark Strong if Tom is to busy or even Ben Whishaw ,Harry Lloyd

      • jammypants says:

Harry Lloyd would be pretty good! or Matthew Goode even. He has that calm, even tone that is trademark of Morpheus.

    • jammypants says:

I’ve read the actual comics and the role is NOTHING like Loki. I repeat, nothing like Loki. The only similarity is dark hair and the immortal part. Although I will agree that Dream is very Adam-like.

      • TotallyBiased says:

        THIS^^^
And the fact that Dream really *is* immortal, in terms of “Life” span. I mean, c’mon. Death is his sister.
None of this piddly `5,000 years or so` stuff.

      • jammypants says:

I agree. The Endless are even more immortal than gods in the Sandman world.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

If the Marvel contracts have non-compete clauses restricting actors from doing comic-book roles for other franchises, Gaiman may not get what he wants.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Ahhh, I hadn’t thought about that, and I think you are right. They do.

Scenes in Asgard: I seem to remember Odin, but does Loki make an appearance?

    • Insomniac says:

Oh crap. That’s a very good point. It would knock Cumberbatch out of the running too, wouldn’t it? (And yes, Loki is in “Sandman.”)

I read that JGL wanted to play Morpheus, and while I really like him, that idea seems like a world of NO. Hiddleston would be good.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

It’s going to be an epic win for some actor. How many films do you thinking this could end up being? There are so many stories woven together. I could see dozens. It will be interesting to see how they do this.

      • Lilacflowers says:

JGL seems to go back and forth about it. I think he’ll cast himself in some part but not as Morpheus.

      • Melanie says:

Dang it, you’re right! Loki IS in Sandman. Well there goes my Hiddleston pick lol.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Marvel is very strict about what its contract players can and can’t do and non-compete clauses can live on for several years after all other sections of the contract itself have expired.

    • Lucrezia says:

Hmm. Marvel let Captain America play in Snowpiercer. Which a graphic novel adaptation. So there’s got to be some wriggle room in the contract.

(That said, I don’t think it’d be a good idea for either Tom or Ben to do both Marvel and Sandman.)

      • Lilacflowers says:

But Snowpiercer is quite a bit different than a superhero or anti-superhero type lead character and wouldn’t exactly be seen as a competition, especially as it doesn’t belong to DC. Gaiman’s Sandman, although published under the Vertigo line is a DC comic and DC is Marvel’s biggest competitor.

    • lunchcoma says:

That may or may not be an issue, but I think it could be a problem that there’s a Loki in the Sandman universe as well. It would be kind of weird to have Marvel Loki bumping into someone else playing Sandman Loki.

I also believe that JGL is going to be playing the part himself, making most of this speculation. There aren’t any others I can think of in the stories that are both interesting and suited to him, and I get the sense that like a lot of smart actors, he’s ensuring he’ll have good roles by creating material for himself.

  5. Maggi says:

I love the Sandman comics. No way should that Benedict person play him!!! Morpheus is beautiful. I think Tom Hiddleston would be lovely.

    • Ag says:

i love them too. i can’t quite see, though, how they would be adapted into film. wait and see, i guess. 🙂

  6. Allegra says:

    Ladies:
Don’t miss the vídeo that Rodney posted on his FB with Tom and Moro, the wonder dog.
    It is really cute!

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Another Hiddles bromance! They are adorable together. I would like to see Hiddles with a cat though. Yes, I know he’s a dog person, but…..

      • Lindy79 says:

I might have imagined it but I thought he said he once had a cat, or there was a cat near his flat or something who used to come inside…

Found the quote: “I love Dogs, but I have a special place in my heart for one cat”

      • Lilacflowers says:

Some people do fine with just both.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I remember him saying, when asked if he was a cat or dog person, that he has been both, but with the exception of one special cat, dogs with out. The cat was named Orlando
Other than that, I have no info.

      • Lilacflowers says:

My Maine coon thinks she is a dog, which apparently is common in the breed. So, he could get a Maine coon cat and it would be like having a dog – and some of these cats are sizable.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

My three kitties are all “puppy cats.” I had two Abyssinians once who were even more puppy-like. Very social creatures.

        Maine coons! Aka shetland ponies!

Fizzy Hiddles needs a pet. He looks very happy with that dog.

    • 'P'enny says:

that video of them singing merry Christmas is fab 🙂 I love it, makes me wonder if he is staying there for Christmas? or they are still doing soundtrack work.

anyway his assistance Olly came home – he tweeted he spent ten weeks in the states. he’s been kept busy. I cant imagine what state hiddles diary is in for next year.

Dancing Bear routine, May, and October
      Acting God in June
Playing with apes in the Summer
jamming with Hugh Laurie in Spring
      clashing swords with Ivory somewhere….

i bet olly gets it all mapped out and then dates get moved and he has to start again.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

J.K. Simmons offers the opportunity for yet another epic bromance, which Simmons will probably welcome after his experiences with Miles Teller.

  8. I Choose Me says:

I love the Sandman series. I have the graphic novel and I think Tom would be an excellent choice to play him. I think he can bring enough nuances to the character that it doesn’t remind of either Adam or Loki. I have faith in my Hiddles.

  9. Sunflower says:

Neil clarified on Tumblr what he meant:
    http://neil-gaiman.tumblr.com/post/105395358071/just-was-wondering-what-made-you-think-of-tom-as

A year ago, he had mentioned both (it’s all about the cheekbones, apparently) and now that Benedict is doing Dr. Strange he said that Tom is still available. Not a second choice.

    • icerose says:

that is what I mean about the radio times using quotes out of context
“And [a TV adaptation] would be cool too. I would absolutely watch the HBO “Sandman.” On the other hand, I would happily watch Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch as the Dream Lord in the movie. Or somebody else, who’s yet to graduate — as long as they’ve got good cheekbones! “”

  10. Midnightatthemuseum says:

Sounds English, cheekbones (and jaw!) ….this has got to be offered to my poor unemployed Sparkles, surely! He’s previously said he would like to do a comic book character, Sandman is said to be ‘a comic book for intellectuals’ he’d love it…..*praying*

  11. tigerlily says:

nearly spit my coffee out….the “other white meat”….

  12. Nicole says:

Hiddleston is a better pick. He doesn’t have the look nearly as much, but he’d find a way to bring some (subtle) fun into the character. Morpheus is a stick in the mud. I love him, but he is. I don’t see that translating on the screen without a little injection of camp… and Hiddleston is the guy to give you camp oozing with class. It would be more of a challenge for him than Benedict (you’d sacrifice a little in the dramatic close-ups) but I don’t see a straight translation being the way to go here… the movie should be its own work of art.

  13. TotallyBiased says:

NG explains on his Tumblr (in response to an ask that wonders if seeing the Dragonfly King in OLLA inspired him to consider Tom for Morpheus, which amuses me) that the interviewer was asking him about BC in reference to this quote from an article last year:
“And [a TV adaptation] would be cool too. I would absolutely watch the HBO “Sandman.” On the other hand, I would happily watch Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch as the Dream Lord in the movie.”

I don’t think the consideration that BC can’t do it is because of a Marvel non-compete, but because of timing. I can’t see a non-compete clause that would include any graphic novel or comic character anytime, ever–and technically Sandman is Vertigo, not DC. That’s why it wasn’t announced during DC’s big movie reveal.

i also don’t see Dream as too much like Loki. If anything, Dr. Strange is, character-wise, more like Morpheus. There were plenty of folks who thought Adam was going to be too Loki-esque, based purely on the hair, until the movie came out and we were treated to a vastly different portrayal. (Purely by hair, Sharp’s is more like Loki, IMO! 😉 )

So I would love to see this–I don’t think this is going to be a ‘comicbook movie’ any more than was V for Vendetta, and I’d LOVE to see Tom carry it off!

    • philae says:

Gaiman has also tweeted that he was just joking about Hiddleston playing Morpheus and that it shouldn’t be considered as news.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Way to shade a short tweet clarifying that he wasn’t making a statement about actual casting news (because there were people taking it as a done deal flooding his feed.)

      • philae says:

Shading? What are you talking about? Gaiman is my favourite writer I would never shade him. I was simply reporting what he tweeted to clarify his comment.
And what he tweeted was that he was joking and that his comment shouldn’t be taken as news.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Apologies if it wasn’t your intent, but your way of referencing the tweet came across to me as shade on Hiddleston (yeah, I’m a little sensitive–see my name! 😉 ) when in the context of other tweets it’s clear he was joking about ‘Hiddleston being still out there’, and he is NOT the one doing the casting so people shouldn’t take his off hand comments for statements of casting fact. He has said more than once, not joking, that he would like to see Tom in the role (as quoted in the article above) but he’s been saying that since long before he was so tightly involved w/this JGL project.

      • TotallyBiased says:

I’d also presume he was joking in the second sentence as well, re “anyone who could sound British with great cheekbones” 😀
But that *could* be construed as confirming that JGL is DEFINITELY not playing the role himself (or that Neil is hoping he isn’t) as we originallyheard.
In any case, I don’t think they are far enough along to have any REAL casting news.

      • 'P'enny says:

Gaiman only brought this up again, I am convinced because he is on a book tour with a new book at aimed girls. of only tried getting through one of his books, which was American Gods, I got as far as first chapter and gave up.

      • philae says:

        No, I wasn’t shading Tom, don’t worry 🙂

      • philae says:

@ P’enny I also couldn’t finish American Gods, but he didn’t write it in his usual style, so don’t judge him based on that one 😉 But Tom’s a Gaiman fan so who knows, maybe they’ll work together on something in the future, a radio drama would be great. Neverwhere’s radio drama is fantastic, Natalie Dormer, James McAvoy, David Harewood, they did a spectacular job.

      • icerose says:

@P’enny Gaiman did not bring the casting up again -it was the radio times asking him about the comments he had made in the previous interview and then used it as click bait

  14. MonicaQ says:

I *squeed* when I saw the headline because Gaiman is my favorite author hands down. And then cringed because I remembered the TV adaptation of “Neverwhere”. Yeesh.

    • MtnRunner says:

I’m reading Neverwhere right now and really enjoying it. Sorry the movie was so bad.

They f*cked up my favorite book “A Prayer for Owen Meany” when they made Simon Birch. Couldn’t watch any of the commercials for fear it would ruin what I had in my imagination. Some books are best left alone.

  15. Katarina says:

I just came here to look at the pictures.

  16. lunchcoma says:

Yeah, this isn’t going to happen. I think Hiddleston would be great in the part, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn’t pick up this project so he could cast someone else to play Dream. I’ll admit that I always pictured Dream as being British because he strikes me as being a bit of an author avatar, but I think Gordon-Levitt will do something pretty special with the role. I get the sense that this is a bit of a passion project for him, and he has a lot of talent to pour into it.

As for Gaiman, he’s clarified that he wasn’t serious, but I think it’s worth noting that he’s not really in charge of this project. As big of a name as he is in the writing world, I’d be kind of surprise if he has casting approval.

    • ellesbelles says:

I was afraid that JGL was going to go the James Franco route into stupid self serving vanity projects, but I’ve been really amazed with his career trajectory, including the box office flops. I actually enjoyed Don John and 50/50. He’s really talented

      • lunchcoma says:

I’ve been impressed by him. I think that both he and Franco are fairly smart, but that Gordon-Levitt is a lot more self-aware. Instead of trying to do 20 different kinds of creative things at once, he focuses on a few projects at a time. Instead of just jumping into something new as if he’s an expert, he made a couple of short films and then a movie with a small budget. It seems like he has fairly good taste in projects as well, so I’m interested to see what he does in the future.

      • ellesbelles says:

slightly off topic but Tom related, I know you were looking to watch Coriolanus. Did you see my post on the old thread? With Gracies help I was able to upload the video onto the Tom Cloud so you dont have to try and get it from google. You can download it and watch it on your laptop that way, or maybe if you have a fancy bluray, beam it to your tv 🙂

      • lunchcoma says:

Yes, I did! Thanks so much for doing that – I’m planning to watch this weekend when I have a little spare time! 🙂

      • MtnRunner says:

Elles, What??? You have the vid (not just audio) of Cori?? I’m gmailing you right now for the link!

I owe you about 100 redbox coupons for Brick Shithouse Tom.

  17. koko says:

I’d love to know how many other projects he’s being considered for. I hope he stays on the same diverse path and chooses roles that challenge him in movies, tv and theater. Such an exciting time for him.

    • Lilacflowers says:

He turned down Snowpiercer (schedule conflict), Me Before You, and Ben Hur. He was attached to Close Enough and Dark Wings has My Angel but both fell through.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

How do you know these were offered and turned down? Source?

      • M.A.F. says:

I’ve never heard of him turning down Snowpiercer let alone him been offered the part. Me Before You, as I understand it, was wishful thinking on the director.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The source was a Joon Ho Bong interview that I read somewhere. He had to turn it down because it was filming at the same time as TDW. The turning down of Ben-Hur was all over the place earlier this year because the studio put it out that they were offering it to him. It was discussed here at length.

      • icerose says:

Likewise Me Before You, was out in the press as well.
And those are the ones we know about. I bet he was offered Shades of whatever and turned it down as well.

      • et alors says:

Didn’t Joon Ho Bong mention during a Q&A after a screening that Tom as well as Michael Fassbender were considered for the role, but they both had scheduling conflicts? Also, a reporter with Vanity Fair (or was it the Hollywood Reporter?), one of the few publications that didn’t report on the Ben Hur situation when the news blew up, tweeted that Tom turned down the Ben Hur role months prior.

      • Josa says:

@et alors. It’s Variety’s reporter Justin Kroll tweeted that Tom has turned down Ben Hur months ago.

      • et alors says:

Ah, that’s it. Thanks, Josa. I just got the “V” publications mixed up because I was reading VF’s write-up on the Rodney/Tom Christmas video. 🙂

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I heard casting rumors but no confirmations of actual offers. Studios usually wait until there is actual casting to announce those things, otherwise you’re looking at all kinds of embarrassment, but wh knows?

  18. ellesbelles says:

A new post and I missed it out of the gate? Bad hiddle-belle!

The dragonfly coat *swoon* thanks for bringing that pic back into my fantasy bank Kaiser!

You know most of the time I just kind of skim the actual article because I’m so excited to get to the comments.

I fell asleep last night to H4 pt 2 and it may or may not have invaded my dreams

  19. Allons-y Alonso says:

Gaiman and Hilddleston? Make it so!!!
Also, every movie should feature J.K Simmons

  20. browniecakes says:

Second choice for Sandman, first choice for husband.

  21. MtnRunner says:

While on the subject of Tommy Boy: US-based dragonflies can get OLLA at your local Redbox for free using promo code “joyful”. I just reserved mine online.

    • ellesbelles says:

Mtn, have I told you lately how much I <3 you?

    • ellesbelles says:

*squee!* just reserved mine. Now I can finally see what all the love is about!

      • MtnRunner says:

Elles, I was thinking of you as I wrote it, knowing you hadn’t seen it yet. We can watch it *together* and squee!

    • Oh Hey says:

Thank you thank you thank you, I have a date with Adam in a little while. On topic, I have never heard of Sandman, is it a fiction or cartoony? I would like to see him get away from the comic book parts, he can do so much better.

      • Allegra says:

        @Oh Hey:
        I agree with you.

      • MtnRunner says:

Oh Hey, you’re most welcome. Blood on a Stick… yeeeaah!

Sounds like people familiar with Sandman say it’s a comic book character. I would agree that he needs to pass on any more of those and continue to diversify his CV. I want to see some comedy and maybe a smart rom-com in the vein of When Harry Met Sally, if that is even possible for someone to write nowadays.

      • jammypants says:

It’s not very comic-y. It’s more like…mythology personified (Dream, Death, Desire, Delirium, Despair, etc).

      • TotallyBiased says:

Again, what jammy said. NG developed the Endless in a much more novel- like way. His Sandman was probably the least comic booky comic I ever read that came out on a regular basis!

  22. Josa says:

After Crimson Peak, Tom picked up 4 more lead roles without Ben in the picture. Tom got ONE role that Ben dropped out of, out of many many roles Tom got offered. Cumberfans should just let that go and stop keep using it against Tom.

    • Allegra says:

      @ Josa:
Don´t worry, Tom does not need to be the shadow of anyone, he is a star with his own light.
And I think that there is nothing wrong with being the second choice of a person, all people go through this, including the actors. Rejection is part of life.
The issue is more important is how people deal with it. The fact is that Tom did not let it affect him. He worked hard, he was relentless. And in the end he was rewarded because he not only won the admiration of the director as well as the main studio executive.

      • Josa says:

I’m not worry for Tom. There is nothing wrong with being the second choice, every actor has been second choice some time in their career. I’m frustrated that there is still some who use this to shade Tom. “Bendy isn’t available, Tommy will be their next call (that’s what happened with Crimson Peak, right?), that sounds like a shade, the kind of shade I often heard coming from a Benny fan.

      • Allegra says:

        @Josa:
It is hard and I think that they will never let it go.
I know it is not ethical, but sometimes I’d like Del Toro revealed why Ben gave up the role in CR. Maybe that would end the suggestions that Tom “stole” the role from Ben.

      • Josa says:

Some suggest Tom “stole” the role from Ben? That’s just bitter talk.
People suggest that the script changed may have led to Ben dropping it, maybe he no longer fits the role. Maybe Ben wants something else “cough” Star Wars “cough” and Crimson isn’t it. The role is his, if the script got changed and he still wants to do it, he should be able to convince Del Toro that he can do it. No one can steal it from him if he is the perfect cast for the role and willing to do it. He dropped it, so either he no longer is the perfect cast, or he is unwilling to do it.

      • Allegra says:

I agree. Whatever was the reason, both Ben and film production reached an agreement even before Tom agree to play the role.

  23. InvaderTak says:

ZOMG you guise, he sang we wish you a Merry Christmas with Rodney C! and a dog! so cute! On BF if you need some cuteness.

  24. Veronica says:

He’d work well in the Gaiman universe, but I wonder if he’d want to take a role that similar to his Marvel endeavors. I like his acting, but he’s not well known in the States outside of his role as Loki and might want to avoid being typecasted.

  25. Camil says:

I haven’t read Sandman but is Morpheus similar to Loki? It seems to be something completely different. I saw images and Morpheus comes across as a dark and philosophical character. Surely Tom would do an amazing job with this role but I doubt this going to happen due to Marvel’s contract.

Besides, Tom could be Gaiman’s second choice but he is the first and only one in my heart, and that my dear ladies means a lot. LOL (yes, I know that Gaiman clarified his answer but I had to say it).

    Love you Tommy!

    • Allegra says:

      @Camil:

      Don’t worry!
For us, Tom’s fan, he is and always will be the first in our hearts.

    • lunchcoma says:

The two characters are physically similar, and I suppose if you look you can find other similarities – they both have important relationships with their siblings and both have a tendency to love people in ways that are damaging to them. But Dream has a pretty different personality and occupies a different role in the story. Instead of being a sympathetic villain, he’s a protagonist who you slowly realize has a lot of negative qualities.

    • icerose says:

he was not Gaiman’s second choice -that is just the way the Radio Times interpreted the answer to their question. The second choice angle is pure click bait

      • Camil says:

        @Allegra: You’re right 😉

@lunchcoma: Thanks, I’ll put Sandman in my “to read” list, Morpheus seems to be an intriguing character. I like that negative qualities you mentioned 🙂

@icerose: I know he wasn’t the second choice, but is pretty common to read those comments here, this is my way to say I don’t care the strange and imaginary competition between Tom and Benedict, because Tom is the only one in my heart xD.

By the way, thanks a lot for the Ballard’s video that you shared with me in the another thread, I’ll try to read one of his novels in English.

      • jammypants says:

I saw it that way too Icerose. As soon as I read the headline, I knew they would spin it that way and rolled my eyes. It’s just ammunition for Ben’s fans. I’m so tired of them constantly being pitted against each other.

  26. Esmerelda says:

Umh, love Gaiman, but his writing does not really translate well into movie-language (see Stardust, Mirrormask). He’s just too writer-ly (he probably needs a super genius director like Tarkovsky to do him justice)

So, mayyyyybe, Hiddles should pass on this one?

    • TotallyBiased says:

To be clear, Hiddles hasn’t been offered this.
But I must challenge you re Gaiman’s books and movies.
Stardust is excellent, got awesome reviews, was marketed TERRIBLY but has done very well in dvd/home video. It has really followed the trajectory of that other “didn’t translate well to movie-language” film, The Princess Bride (/snark)
(Plus it introduced me to Mark Strong.)
Mirrormask is essentially an indie film, has also kept a continued presence in the dvd/home video market.
Coraline was nominated for SO many awards, including GG and Oscar–it won BAFTA, AFI, and ASCAP, among others.
      I love all of them.
(And people keep trying to work with his material, for what that’s worth)

      • Esmerelda says:

But Stardust the book is so much more awesome than Stardust the movie… The whole logic of magic being the literal interpretation of something usually understood as metaphor has been completely lost in the movie (ok, they added DeNiro dancing the can can, but that’s not quite enough…)
Coraline was the best adaptation, imho, and of course it was an animated movie…
To be clear, I would love to see a great movie out of Gaiman’s material, I just think it’s going to take something more than any run-of-the-mill production…

(also, I think they should hurry up and do a Good Omens movie already, and totally cast Hiddles as Aziraphale)

      • DahliaDee says:

@Esmerelda, I respectfully disagree. He’d be a better fit for Crowley. And if they really want to break the internet, they can cast Cumby as Aziraphale. Like so:

    • Lilacflowers says:

Gaiman’s issue for today is whether he looks good naked. His wife has assured him on Twitter that he does.

      • icerose says:

do you mean Tom or Gaiman look good when they are naked? The world knows Tom looks good naked..

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, Gaiman. Unless Amanda Palmer divorced Gaiman and married Tom in the past 24 hours.

      • jammypants says:

I’ve always had a bit of a crush on Gaiman, so this only adds to my lust…I mean love of him.

    • jammypants says:

Coraline was rather amazing though, so not all things are badly translated =)

His other better translatable work are getting the full silver screen treatment: The Graveyard Book and The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

  27. Deb says:

I’m very much a Neil Gaiman-person! I love his books, and he always seemed like a very down-to-earth sort of guy. Then, last year, I met him and he was absolutely lovely. Just how I had always kind of pictured he would be. 🙂

  28. Allegra says:

    Ladies:
Before I forget, there are 2 online calendars:
    a. In this one , each month brings a new pic with Tom:

  29. paranormalgirl says:

Adore Neil. Had a chance to meet him, too and loved every second of being in his company.

I am hoping they adapt “Brief Lives” for the film. Gives a good overview of the Endless.

  30. MtnRunner says:

Ok Gaiman fans, I’m reading Neverwhere and wondering what your top 5 book recs would be. Ready, set, GO!!

      4. Anansi Boys
      5. The Graveyard Book

    • Lucrezia says:

      1. Good Omens
      2. Stardust
      3. American Gods
      4. Neverwhere
      5. The Graveyard Book

If you like Gaiman, then I’d also recommend Michael Marshall Smith.

    • MtnRunner says:

      Lovely, thank you ladies!

    • jammypants says:

not really a book, but from his short story collection, Smoke and Mirrors, is pretty much the best story of his, imo. It’s called Murder Mysteries.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Oh, I LOVE that collection! But my favourite is probably Troll Bridge. I’m also pretty fond of We Can Get Them For You Wholesale–always makes me giggle.

  31. ellesbelles says:

Can I just say I cannot wait for quitting time so I can stop by redbox and get my OLLA dvd? I dont want to wait 45 mins and then drive another hour. I WANT TO BE HOME NOW!!!

    • Gracie says:

You need a drink of something while you’re at it. Something light but with a lingering aftertaste to start off, just to get you into the mood for all that paleness and all that so-bad-yet-so-good wigs. 😉

      • ellesbelles says:

Gracie dear, I know I have some Stella Artois (my favorite) chilling AND I have the chalices and blade to do it right, but I might skip that and go with something a little warmer

    • MtnRunner says:

I feel ya, Elles. I’ve got four hours before kids are in bed and I get my OLLA fix.

      • ellesbelles says:

By the time I actually get out of here, drive home, get everything sorted, feed dogs, etc, I’ll be on your schedule of viewing! We can be the late nighters and gush about it lol

      • Gracie says:

Don’t forget feeding yourself! Tommy wouldn’t want you to go hungry during the holiday season. 🙁
I say this ‘cos my mum is spending time with me, and she’s gonna be here for some time. And like a good Chinese mother, for whom I can never be slim enough, well, I am not all that slim to begin with… she is watching my food intake and I feel starving!

      • Allegra says:

        Ladies:
A good tip to lose weight is to take a glass of warm water with a few drops of lemon, but do not put sugar. Do this before breakfast.
You can also take it along during the day. As lemon is diuretic it helps eliminate salt from your body and as a result people are less swollen. The only downside is that you start to go the toilet more often.

      • MtnRunner says:

Elles, I’ll be gushing an hour later (if you’re PST), with a glass of red wine and my emotional huz rolling his eyes at my TommyCrushing.

Gracie, I feel for you. Keep some almonds or dark chocolate hidden to sneak from time to time so you don’t feel too deprived.

Allegra, why warm water? The thought makes me want to hurl (which is another weight loss trick I don’t recommend BTW!).

      • ellesbelles says:

@mtn I have it on right now, and all I can say so far is enchanting. Tom is beautiful of course but Tilda is next level

      • lunchcoma says:

Oh, is this your first viewing, ellesbelles? It’s such a lovely movie.

I’m actually watching Coriolanus now and am taking a short break between the first and second video segment. Tom’s performance (and Mark Gatiss’s) is amazing. I’ve only seen this work in Ralph Fiennes’s movie version, and the two are very different. I may have to watch Fiennes’s and this once more for more of a comparison. I will say that the electronic music is highly irritating, though.

      • MtnRunner says:

Elles, It gets better, as you have probably seen by now… 🙂

      • ellesbelles says:

It really does. I feel almost elevated, like.. affected. What a gorgeous film. I cant make words apparently.

      • Oh Hey says:

I love OLLA, I don’t know why it didn’t get more good press. Adam is brilliant, “mother of toilet seat”, can’t understand how I missed that line first time around. Tilda-love her. Full stop. Now if he wants to wrap himself around me the way he does Eve, I’m waiting….

      • MtnRunner says:

This is the third time I’ve watched it and I enjoy it more with each viewing. Glad you liked it.

You need to update your favorites list now…

      • ellesbelles says:

@mtn Ithink I would tuck it in between wallander and hollow crown/ cranford, so third place. Hal is forever my #1

      • Anne tommy says:

I love OLLA Ellesbelles, have you seen the “Making of” documentary, think it’s called Travelling at Night, excellent.

  32. ellesbelles says:

Lunch, yeah first time. I was going to follow up with hal part deux, since I fell asleep last night but I don’t know now

    • lunchcoma says:

Oh, how lovely. I’m almost a little jealous. I have a disc plan on Netflix so I’ve seen it a couple of times, but you know, your first time watching is always special. Glad you enjoyed it.

  33. jammypants says:

Sorry didn’t get to read the comments yet, but hasn’t it always been either or? Like, the reason it sounds like Cumberbatch was first choice because the question was framed as “Since he’s out of the running due to Doctor Strange, who’s your other choice?” not “Since he’s your first choice, but he’s out of the running due to Doctor Strange…” In either case, I always though Ben would have made a better Morpheus than Strange. That casting is still strange to me.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Yeah, it’s true that NG mentioned BC for the role at least several years before he did Tom (I think just because Tom hadn’t been on his radar) but he’d mentioned other names before BendyBot.

In the past year or so, he had mentioned them both equally. But again, he doesn’t have actual casting control (although I bet his opinion matters.)

  34. pixie-stix says:

New pics of Tom have just surfaced over on Torilla’s. Hoodie, deep v-neck tshirt and sunglasses, carrying a guitar and wearin’ boots…he looks delicious. Brace yourself.😜
