Brad Pitt got high & taught people how to say ‘David Oyelowo’ in Palm Springs?

Brad Pitt produced the film Selma and he’s just starting to promote the film a little bit. He’s in a slightly different position with Selma than he was last year with 12 Years a Slave – he produced 12 Years, but he also acted in it, playing a vital but small role towards the end. Brad doesn’t appear in Selma, he just helped get it made. And it’s paying off – Selma has been included on many Best Picture short-lists, and many believe it’s one of the best films ever made about the civil rights movement in America.

So, Brad made an appearance at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala over the weekend. He didn’t walk the carpet with all of the other stars. Brad just came out to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to actor David Oyelowo, who plays Martin Luther King Jr. in the film. Oyelowo is this year’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, in that people are like “who is this amazing actor and how do we pronounce his name?” Thankfully, Brad took a few hits off the bong before he came to Palm Springs, and he decided to teach everyone how to pronounce “Oyelowo.” I’ve been saying “Ol-yellow” which actually isn’t far from the real pronunciation.

So it’s Ol-yell-al-oh? Or did Brad just get high and forget how it’s really pronounced?

In all honesty, I read that Brad came across like a total stoner before I watched the video, and now that I’ve seen it… I don’t think he was that high. People always give Brad a hard time for smokin’ weed, and while I don’t doubt that he’s a recreational smoker still, to this day, I think he just gives off a stoner vibe even when he’s not high.

Also: Brad Pitt wore nail polish. Sure.

The way he says no and laughs while doing so totally reminded me of a young, up-to-no-good Brad. (at about 1:20) Dang oO I’m so surprised that I found this somwhat .. hot?

  2. Luca76 says:

And I bet all those old fogies in the Academy still asked him how to pronounce his last name so.

  3. Kitten says:

I forgot everything after I saw the pics of the nail polish.

    • Lol, it reminded me of my dad. He used to let my little sister ‘braid’ his hair, and tie them into colorful pigtails while he was working at home.

I’m impressed with whoever did his nail polish though–I am HORRIBLE at it (I only do my toes, like once a year), and always get it everywhere….he has no extra polish anywhere else.

    • Kiddo says:

I never noticed how stubby/chubby his hands were before. Definitely not beautiful like Jeff Goldblum’s.

      • mimif says:

And we have our first CSI case of the day.

      • Kiddo says:

I forgot the tape. Not enough pockets in Lederhosen, apparently.

      • mimif says:

Haben Sie etwas schmutzig in die Hose?

      • Kiddo says:

I shall ignore that comment, and in a blatant attempt to curry favor and love from Sixer, I shall now be sporting this: http://www.hats.com/country-gentleman-british-cap.html to all future investigations.

      • mimif says:

Oh now you’ve really thrown a spanner in the works.

        *cues Red Dwarf*

      • Sixer says:

        It’s…

        OH-YELL-OH-WOE

        Jus’ sayin’.

I like him. And he’s NOT POSH.

Oh. Were you guys saying something?

      • mimif says:

Something about Kiddo being chuffed over her bespoke driving cap.

      • Esmom says:

Kiddo, funny, I noticed the chubby hands, too, for the first time. He’s so slim that they look odd to me, like inflatable hands.

      • Kiddo says:

        Bugger off, mimoff.

I’m Enry, the VIII, I am
Enry, the VIII, I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door.
She’s been married seven times before
And every one was an Enry
.
She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam
(Nor a Sam)
I’m her VIII old man, I’m Enry
 Enry, the VIII, I am
*gratuitous h-drops, affricates and fricatives, applied as needed.*

Esmom, I know, they are squat and NOT POSH.

    • doofus says:

I bet Z did his nails.

    • I Choose Me says:

Did Zahara or Viv do his nails I wonder?

Also that part in the vid where he licked his lips, my lady parts approved.

  4. Abbott says:

I’m sure David Oyelowo appreciated the “busted Speak-and-Spell at a dirty bong drum circle” singalong.

  5. Jaderu says:

I wonder if Brad has a nail art board on Pinterest?

He didn’t sound Chanel no 5 stoned. Maybe Troy stoned.

  6. V4Real says:

I finally made it to the movies and chose Selma over Unbroken simply because my grandparents lived about 20 minutes away from Selma Alabama and was there during that time. It’s hard to believe that this happened not that long ago and my mother was raised in that town during the Civil Rights era.

On a much lighter note I wouldn’t have mind getting high with Brad. He could teach me how to say anything as long as he puff puff, pass.

    • Dani2 says:

What did you think of Selma? I’m yet to see Unbroken, but I’ve heard some good things about it.

      • V4Real says:

        @Dani2 Happy New Year
There’s been movies about Dr. MLK before but this one felt different, mainly because it was focused more on the voting rights and that iconic march in that one area. This movie over others had some hard to watch scenes that just made you cringe.

        Spoiler:
The police attack on unarmed people was just wow.
Not to give too much away for those planning on seeing it but I used to think that it was Hoover who decided on his own to go after King, I didn’t know it was at the request of LBJ who this movie demonize a bit. History would have us to believe that King and Johnson had disagreements but were on the same page for the movement. The movie tells a different story. I don’t think they got everything completely accurate (what movie based on real life events actually does) but it was a great film. This movie gives great insight to what it was and to still be Black in America. It helps the naive to understand why racism still exist. Look at it this way. The racist people during that era are now grandparents who passed their racial ideologies down to their kids and grandkids. Socialization starts in the home and so does racism. David performance stood out. I’m glad he had this moment to shine. Most people have never heard of him.

A bit of trivia. Hugh Jackman was slated to star as the racist sheriff Jim Clark when Lee Daniels was on board but took on The Butler instead.

@VC Liam Neeson was also going to play the part of LBJ back in 2009 before the filmchanged hands. I’m still planning on seeing Unbroken but Selma was closer to my heart.

    • I really want to see it too–of course my cruddy theater isn’t playing ANYTHING good. They’re playing The Hobbit, Unbroken, Annie, Night At The Museum, and Woman in Black 2….and they’re advertising for that crappy Johnny Depp movie. WHY?

But I’m going on Thurs. to go see Unbroken w/my friend again…

  7. Toot says:

Brad didn’t seem high to me, he actually made me laugh. David was pleased by it.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. And David should be pleased by it! A mega star spent two minutes teaching Academy voters how to say your name. Talk about making sure you are remembered and hopefully, rewarded!

  8. Lilliputian says:

    Embarrassing dad jokes.

  9. Dani2 says:

Praying so hard to God/the Universe that either one of my faves (Oyelowo or Keaton) wins at the Oscars this year.

    • Erin says:

Why would someone winning an ‘award” that is bought and paid for by studios, be so important to you?

      • Dani2 says:

Urm, the “praying so hard” but was a joke/exaggeration, I would just like to see one of them win, it’s not that deep, sis.

  10. scout says:

For me it’s the fault of his role in “Thelma and Louise” movie. I still see that young, supremely handsome and stupid guy even now! 😀
He said he doesn’t do Bong anymore in many interviews and I don’t think he does now but he is not a very articulate person like his wife and he sounds like he did some Bong. Haha…
Love the nail polish, must be Zahara and V’s work of art, 100% sure Shiloh ran out of the room when this was in progress in horror. Ben Affleck gets some of those with his girls’ too. Lucky dads.

  11. FingerBinger says:

I’m still trying to figure out the look Brad is going for. It looks like he’s aiming for Peter Bogdanovich. All he needs is a shave and an ascot.

  12. Mean Hannah says:

He didn’t sound stoned to me…and as cheesy as it was, it got the job done. Now I know how David Oyelowo’s name is pronounced – and spelled. And I’m not being facetious.

I used to manage a very famous artist (in his genre anyway) and we hired a sideman who had a very hard to pronounce last name and an unusual first name. He was an up-and-comer, who is now known by everyone in the know, but my artist just could not pronounce his name correctly. Every night, before the show, I’d phonetically spell the name out for him, repeat it and practice it with him. Every night on stage, my artist would bungle it and mumble his name, while correctly and loudly and clearly saying the rest of the band’s name. Maybe I needed to sing it for him.

I think it’s laziness, ignorance, and racist to not learn the correct pronunciation of names of people you work with or cover or should know for your business/industry. No matter how alien the name sounds to you, it’s usually spelled phonetically and there’s only two, possibly three, ways to pronounce it. Once you know where the accent/emphasis is or how it breaks, the spelling takes care of the rest. For example, with Oyelowo’s, it’s either Oy-el-o-wo, or O-yell-o-wo, so once the correct pronunciation is pointed out, you can’t go wrong. I’m not saying it’s easy – as sometimes with some Eastern European or Scandinavian names, they aren’t pronounced the way you’d expect American English to be pronounced, but a little effort goes a long way.

  13. Angela says:

I gotta say, I really respect that Brad is using his power in the industry to produce significant and excellent films by and about people of color. Hollywood is way too white and he’s contributing to the solution while a lot of people ignore the problem. And he’s not positioning himself as a great white savior to too great an extent, just doing his job. It’s also a smart business decision; he sees that there is an underserved market for films where the cast and crew are not 95% white. I’m really looking forward to Americanah next year.

    • cibele says:

Good points. Am dying to see Selma this weekend.

    • I really like it too–and I think he’s doing it for his daughter. White people with black/mixed race kids learn a lot, about racism–personally. My dad never really grew up around black people, doesn’t really have anything other than white relatives (he has one aunt that rarely visits who has been dating black men since it was basically legal to do so–the seventies)–and so I think that he was shocked at the reception that we got. And he learned from it.

  14. BNA FAN says:

Brad didn’t sound high to me. As he had mentioned some times he has a habit of swallowing some of his words.

If I’m not mistaken, on January 7 will be 10 years since the official break up, and Brad never looked back. People say lots of crazy things about Brad but in my opinion he’s a person who does not run around on his women. He was with his X for about seven years and Angie for 10 years, two women for 17 years. IMO, that’s a good man. I’m wishing Brad and Angelina a happy life. Happy Birthday to ZZ on january 8th?

  15. Ally.M says:

    More Plonker than Stoner.

  16. siri says:

Stoned?? No, didn’t look, or sound like it. A bit over…whatever, little silly, but very sympathetic. I think Pitt is a good man. And this whole thing is part of the promotion of Selma, and that’s a very worthwhile film.

  17. BNA FAN says:

The strangest thing is, why would JA not address her present relationship with JT? However, she did answered the question about a 10 years divorce. I’m thinking JA understand whenever when the name Brad Pitt is mentioned, she will get more hits than mentioning her present fiancé. JA is a great business woman no matter how she pretend she is over her Brad, all lies.

  18. serena says:

So just because he was singing and being goofy he was high? I think he was just trying to be funny, and he was frankly.
The nail polish is cute lol.

  19. Jasmine Warfield says:

You just know Z got a hold of him and did his nails

  20. Talita says:

I don’t think he was high. I guess he was trying to be funny and it seems like the Oyelowo guy really liked it.

  21. LAK says:

Oyelowo isn’t hard to pronounce at all. No accents anywhere. As written as pronounced.

Chewitel Ejiofor is hard to pronounce

I don’t think i’ve ever heard the correct pronouciation of Lupita’s surname. Ditto Djimon Housou.

  22. Misprounced Name Dropper says:

Not only does Brad smoke weed but he’s vehemently opposed to the War on Drugs. He was one of the producers for The House I Live In, which is a doco that argues against the failed War on Drugs in favor of the legalization of them.

    • vern81 says:

He says that he doesn’t do drugs any more and there is no evidence to show that he does. That was a great documentary- I haven’t done drugs since college (three kids ago), but am firmly in the legalize drugs camp. Pitt has done a great job making/supporting projects that deserve attention and is working to make the world a better place. Same with Jolie- another reason they are so compatible.

  23. lower-case deb says:

i like how David’s kids spill the beans on what kids do when they hang out with the Jolie-Pitt kids. they like the petting zoo that Pitt hired, but they seem to prefer the ice-cream truck more 🙂

    hooray ice cream truck!

  24. Marlaann says:

    Is he wearing nail polish??
