Let’s face it, Lupita Nyong’o is a princess. She can pull off weird looks and still look regal and interesting. She can show a lot of skin and never look trashy. She has that rare grace, and it enables her to try different things and still look gorgeous. She wore this sleeved, patterned Elie Saab gown to last night’s SAG Awards. Lupita was not there as a nominee, she was there as last year’s SAG winner and this year’s presenter. That’s what this dress says to me: “I can have a lot of fun, because I’m just presenting.” So she tried something new.
As for the actual dress… I would have flat-out hated it on any other person, I’m sure. But on Lupita, it sort of works. I’m partial to anything with a good sleeve, and the pattern is… ugly/interesting. She elevated a questionable/bad dress, basically. As for her styling… I love the lipstick and I think we should applaud her for not matching her eyeshadow to her dress. The hair was epic too – this was a big statement ‘do.
PS… A lot of people are shipping Lupita and Jared Leto. That’s been happening since last year’s awards season though, when Lupita and Jared were always at the same events with each other. They presented together last night and Jared seemed particularly love-struck. My take? Jared is into Lupita and she probably flirts with him but doesn’t want to go any further and it drives him crazy.

I didn’t see her until she was on TV, and when they only showed her from the waist up, it totally looked like a giant bloodstain on her shoulder.

This looks great. I don’t usually like her fashion choices (especially lately) but this one is awesome. And she totally makes it work. It is not a great gown but she makes it look fantastic.
I actually really like this whole look, even though I normally dislike red and green together. It’s much better than the purple thing she wore to the Golden Globes, and her hair rocks.

Also I’ve met him 8 times and, yes, he’s a flirt but always a gentleman – he’s very appreciative of his fans but he’s not afraid to put the rude ones at their place.

Lupita’s smile would make a garbage bag look good. She is just so, so beautiful. Her fashion last year was perfect though. Not sure about this dress, don’t hate it, don’t love it. I saw a photo where it looked like she had turned it around, there was no cleavage. But, she is just so magnificent, she can do what she wants.
Replying to self. She actually changed dresses and it was a shorter version without sleeves and no cleavage. And Leto always looks a bit stoned or like he had something done to his eyes and he always looks like he needs a wash.

Looks great! I love the dress on her. I don’t like the hair though. It’s obviously her choice but with a gorgeous face like that and a nicely shaped head she could permanently rock a shaved head! My head is really lumpy so I couldn’t work a very short do but Lupita definitely can. It would be very high fashion on her.

Maybe I’m the minority but i LOVE (with capital letters) this dress, and it suits her perfectly, also great stylism. The best look of the night hands down. Risky and elegant, it seems that only a few nowadays (especially Lupita) can pull off a risky look without being complete messes, and the rest simply go with forgettable and boring looks.

I feel like I’m the only person not on the Jared Leto train. Don’t care for him. He was great in DBC but I’m so indifferent towards him. I find him SO asexual. And I didn’t care for how handsy he was with Lupita. She seemed slightly uncomfortable when he was straight up staring at her while they were presenting lol.
As for Lupita’s dress, not a huge fan. The colors are a little too dark and I like when Lupita works brighter colors especially against her skin tone. As a fellow POC, I personally would have not picked this gown. But I disagree that this wouldn’t have worked on anyone else. If you look at the Elie Saab Pre Fall look book (where this gown is from), the blonde model looks superb in this gown. It works better against lighter skin and lighter hair.
I’m not a Jared Leto fan either. I can’t shake the impression that he is full of himself, and he exudes a sleazy vibe around Lupita.

While the pattern isn’t exactly my cup of tea (somewhat colorblind – can tell the difference between colors, but gradations and saturation levels go wonky for me – so it’s all visually a LOT) the dress itself is really stunning. The cut and fit are perfect, the dress moves like a dream, the only thing that stands out a bit as a ‘meh’ is the weird choice to pick neon green piping on the belt. NO clue how that decision was arrived at for the designer, totally baffling.
Is it JUST the print people object to about the dress or am I missing some massive design gaffe because it seems like all the sites I’ve read today (or at least all the fashion style sites) have been losing their collective minds about how ugly it is, so I keep wondering if I’m missing something major. Or is it just a case of, since I sew so much, I see the bones of the dress and blank on things I know that 2 hours and a couple bucks of dye can fix almost any surface issues? Honestly, love the dress so much I’ve spent about an hour trying to get enough images together to start sketching out a pattern for myself to wear to an upcoming event so I am kinda confuzzled.
