Uzo Aduba in yellow Angel Sanchez at the SAGs: lovely or too much?

Uzo Aduba

Uzo Aduba won the SAG award for best female actor in a comedy series. Her Angel Sanchez dress caused a huge splash on Twitter, due to its bright yellow shade. I like the color and cut of the dress, but I’m not loving all the perforated eyelets. The effect is too busy, although the Forevermark diamonds are lovely. Uzo did look beautiful, and she seemed genuinely surprised to win her actor award. In her speech, she said “I just really, really, really truly want to say, the day I got this job was the day I stopped acting and to be in a room with all you amazing human beings, amazing talents, for what I respect so much and love so much, is really truly the greatest honor.” That first part is true! Uzo decided to quit acting before receiving the call for Crazy Eyes.

OITNB also won the best ensemble comedy award, which finally knocked Modern Family off its undeserved perch. Yay!

Alysia Reiner, who plays the nefarious warden Figueroa, went for full-on drama in a scarlet Christian Siriano gown. This feels exactly like something Fig would wear. I appreciate how Alysia just went for it.

Natasha Lyonne often plays brash characters like Nicky Nichols, but she doesn’t seem to like the red carpet. Her Proenza Schouler gown was a safe pick but but nothing special. Natasha wore Fred Leighton jewelry, mostly understated gold bangles with a 19th century diamond ring.

I love Selenis Leyva‘s gown. She plays no-nonsense Gloria on OITNB, and this Bibhu Mohapatra dress attracted the right kind of attention. I like the dual-color with the offbeat flower print. The fabric was a bit wrinkly, but this is an otherwise solid look.

Selenis Leyva

Dasha Polanco (Dayanara Diaz) has proven to be a fussy red-carpet dresser. This is doily bridal fug, and the train is too much. She’s very overdressed for any event.

Dasha Polanco

Elizabeth Rodriguez (Daya’s mother, Aleida), cleaned up impossibly well in this plum-colored Randi Rahm number. Nice clean lines, beautiful.

Elizabeth Rodriguez

Lorraine Toussaint starred as the excellent villain Vee. You’d never guess by looking at her giant polka-dotted skirt. I’m torn on this look, but it’s not awful.

Lorraine Toussaint

Kimiko Glenn, who plays the annoying Soso, looked elegant in a Gemy Maalouf strapless gown. I like the little side ruffle, which saves the dress from being boring.

I’m so glad Uzo won. The fashion choices here are not that great but I love this cast.

  2. Marianne says:

I thought that dress on Uzo looks amazing. It’s not my favourite look of the night, but it really worked on her.

  3. QQ says:

AWW I’m so Happy for Uzo… I’m also strangely Happy-Giddy for a OITNB Latin Crew Post… Make another One, We have Enough Girls for it!!! ..Like Ideven care what they wear I just love to see these women highlighted.. I just Love those girls…Minus Piper

  4. vauvert says:

The purple dress was stunning. Everything else… Not so much. The yellow gown reminds me of a giant fishing net.

    • *North*Star* says:

I thought yellow snake skin. But she looks beautiful which is tough in a dress that is either a love-it or hate-it dress.

  5. GingerCrunch says:

Hey! A bunch of women with normal bodies! WTH?

    • Joy says:

It’s almost jarring to see isn’t it? I’m so used to size 0 after 0 that a woman who looks like what I would see in real life is almost strange. Which in itself is kind of sad.

    • *North*Star* says:

This is why I’ve started to prefer British TV — normal people are hired and not surgically altered people.

    • Tiffany :) says:

That is part of the reason I love the show so much. So many different types of women make it SO interesting!

      • Kimmy says:

I loved seeing them win! In a year that was lacking so much diversity, it was awesome seeing them on stage! Viola Davis too!!

  6. Maria says:

Kimiko killed it, the dress is lovely.

I like the purple dress as well (forgot the actress’s name), the rest of them, nope.

I was delighted when Uzo won, she deserves it, her performance as Crazy Eyes is amazing and on point.

  7. Kiddo says:

Her gown reminds me of a dress up version of workout gear, with the vents for sweat. Or a pair of Nike sneakers. Do not like at all.

  8. PunkyMomma says:

No, no, no – Uzo’s dress looks like my pot scrubbing scrunge. No, just no.

Kimiko, I need her dress. The color was bland but the side ruffle was just enough to put that dress in my dream closet.

    • SamiHami says:

That’s exactly what I thought! I bright yellow plastic kitchen scrubby. Great for Teflon pans, not so great for the red carpet.

  9. Blythe says:

Did celebrities stop trying this year? I swear, this is the award season where fashion dies. Everyone looks horrendous. With the exception of about two or three women, these are all horrible looks. Do better. I was expecting something more.

  10. OH Lord, Dascha. She needs to quit it with lace. AND the dress is see through, because I can see her thong.

    • MaiGirl says:

She has both terrible taste, and no awareness of how things look on her body. At least this is better than that strapless dress she wore to some awards show last year that she was spilling out of on all sides!

  11. Cindy says:

Uzo looks beautiful and the dress is okay but I hate that shade of yellow. I love this show and I can’t wait for the new season to start. Uzo is a fantastic actress, as are the rest of the cast. Piper is a little grating however, and I don’t know why. Maybe she just stands out as being too cutesy among the rest of these women because they are so talented.

  12. bns says:

Dasha is SO gorgeous to me. Like, her face is stunning.

  13. Lama Bean says:

I actually like Lorraine Toussaint’s dress. I have a soft spot for her. She’s been in the game for a long time and hopefully she’s getting recognized now.

  14. Janet says:

I love Aduba in yellow but that dress looks like a fishing net.

  15. Jayna says:

I really liked the yellow dress on Uzo. I guess I’m in the minority. And she gave the best speech of the night for me. I literally had tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of it.

The purple gown is beyond lovely.

  16. Angela says:

Where’s Danielle Brooks? She looked gorgeous and dramatic.

  17. embertine says:

I like Uzo’s dress but it is setting off my trypophobia a little as it looks like that lotus breast thingie. *shudders*

  18. Kelly says:

Why would “Modern Family” win = undeserved. They don’t phone in their performances and they work hard and long hours just like anyone else.

    • Kiddo says:

Yeah, not sure why they got dissed. Aren’t they technically really more a TRUE comedy as well?
The others, as far as I can tell, are dramas with some comedy.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think Modern Family was really great when it first came out. But the writing has gone down hill, yet it keeps winning.

    • lucy2 says:

I still enjoy the show and the cast is great, but I feel like they’ve been over-awarded at this point. There’s a lot of other great comedies out there, I like to see it go to someone else once in a while.

  19. bammer says:

So happy for Uzo. She’s so good as Crazy Eyes.

  20. Angie says:

I was so happy for her when she won! Her speech was so touching. It’s always so cool when someone whose worked hard and struggled and appreciates it actually wins.
Plus she just deserved it dammit. She’s excellent
As for her dress: I like it. But i think it may be in how she carries herself. She looks graceful to me.

  21. sophie says:

Was glad she won – love her character – and also glad that OITNB won over Modern Family.

  22. Brittaki says:

Elizabeth’s purple gown was the best of the night for me. I absolutely love it. I love it so much I’m envious I don’t own it. Grand slam for a red carpet newcomer.

  23. I Choose Me says:

Dislike every outfit with the exception of Elizabeth Rodriguez and Kimiko’s.

  24. Murphy says:

Fig plays the warden’s executive assistant. We haven’t actually met the warden yet on OITNB

  25. lucy2 says:

I follow Uzo on FB, and she had a photo of her in a red dress for a fitting that was much prettier. Maybe it was for something else?
I don’t love any of the dresses, but don’t really care – I am so happy for them, Uzo especially. They are such a talented bunch, and the show is SO good. It’s amazing with a cast that big, the show and actors were able to give each character so much depth.
I imagine many of the cast faced struggles in the industry, so for them all to win this together is really special.

  26. Mellie says:

Loved Uzo’s speech, hated her dress. I don’t know why there is all the Modern Family hate on this site…I think it’s a good show with a great cast.

  27. poppy says:

Uzo’s yellow dress fits her perfectly. she looks great.

Natasha’s dress is another example of the bodice falling too long by many many inches. red carpet is basically another runway so designers should alter the dresses to FIT the model in every way.

Selenis’s dress is awesome but just a bit too tight around the hips and thighs.
the other red, the beige and the purple dress are not my taste but fit well. they look good.

i like Lorraine’s dress. it has a nice balance of details and is cut right for her. she looks great.

the white doily is AWFUL. kim kardashian levels awfulness. it should have been dark and not so tight. shame on the person being paid to dress her. SHAME! know your client ffs.

  28. msw says:

I don’t care if she shows up wearing a purple Grimace costume. I love her anyway and DAMNIT SHE PULLS IT OFF.

  29. Sass back says:

I actually liked Dascha’s dress because it was backless. And I liked her braid. At first I was like that’s some Kim K/Paula Patton weirdness and then from the side with the backless and that wonderful braid, she looked lovely. Her make up was also nice. Not my favorite dress but not as bad the blog post makes it sound.
