Kelly Cutrone: Kanye West ‘is a joke as a fashion designer, he’s not legit’

wenn4085686

I can’t believe we’re STILL talking about Kanye West’s NYFW Adidas show from last week. But that is (legitimately) the genius of Kanye West: he’s usually the most interesting person in a dull world. Yes, he’s crazy. Yes, he’s a delusional megalomaniac. But still… we’re talking about him. Even people who think he’s a fashion fraud are still talking about him. Take Kelly Cutrone, the famous fashion publicist and judge on ANTM. Cutrone has a hate-on for Kanye and Kim Kardashian. Last year, she told the NYDN that there’s no one “who really works in the fashion industry who gives a flying f— about Kanye West.” She said that Kim and Kanye “have no influence in the fashion world whatsoever.” Cutrone was telling Hard Truths and most of you loved it. Now she’s back with her thoughts on Kanye’s Adidas show:

Kelly Cutrone, founder of fashion public relations firm People’s Revolution, didn’t hold back her opinions when it came to the rapper’s latest collaboration. “I’m not into his fashion thing,” she told PEOPLE Now. “I think he’s fine as a rapper. I think he’s a joke as a fashion designer.”

When asked if she at least liked the shoes in the line, Cutrone answered bluntly, “I mean, it’s not, he’s not legit. Have you seen the product?” she said. “Didn’t he have his own line in London, which was a disaster that he spent $10 million to do, that no one wore?”

The fashion publicist goes on to explain exactly why she thinks the rapper should stay in the music industry and leave the designing to the professionals. “I just think that you should stay focused at what you’re good at. Just because you’re a good rapper doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good fashion designer,” she told PEOPLE. “I mean, we’ve seen that over and over. Sean John is a really successful line, but you know, no one in the fashion industry is waking up and going, ‘Hey did you get that … did you like, trade up your Moncler for your Sean John?’ No. Nobody’s saying that.”

[From People]

Eh. I enjoy some Goop-esque snobbery as much as the next blogger, but I do think Cutrone is being unfair… to Sean John!! Sean John is a huge label and go-to sportswear/lifestyle for a lot of people. Sportswear is a multi-billion dollar industry, and maybe the real snobs should sniff their noses at the stupid couture lines that only get worn by 22-year-old, white, size-2 ingénues who get to borrow it (not buy it). But yeah, Cutrone’s words about Kanye… very interesting.

Incidentally, I mentioned in some of my previous coverage of Kanye’s line that it looked like some of the runway models were wearing bulletproof vests. Turns out, I was right. Kanye designed some kevlar-like vests for the Adidas line. Fashion + social commentary? And he made a toddler-sized one for North too.

Kanye loves fashion, doesn’t make him a fashion designer. I love music, but that doesn’t make me a musician.

    • Sarah says:

      ^^This^^

    • TX says:

Yes this 100%. And judging by Kim’s outfits, he’s not a good stylist either

      • GingerCrunch says:

Someone should do a blog of wives styled by their husbands! Hilarity for sure! That’s what I thought of when I saw Kim’s Grammy get-up.

      • alicegrey12 says:

I want to say something but I won’t. The reason why I am not saying anything about this subject (Kayne’s fashion) is because I don’t care.

    • Pene says:

If you produced music, even if most people didn’t like it, then actually you would be a musician. Same with fashion design.

I am a designer myself, and I’m no fan of Kanye, but the fact that the general population is buying into the fashion world’s snobbery is hilarious to me. A lot of designers don’t go to school to design, they just do it. Same with many other types of art forms.

And LOL at Kelly Cutrone talking like she has anything to do with real fashion. She is a hack and no one cares about her, but apparently she found a good way to get press by bashing other wannabes like herself. Get off it.

      • Ava says:

Your argument is irrelevant she not saying he isn’t a designer because he didn’t go to school, she is saying he isn’t but his clothing are rubbish and she gave example of his London line being a failure .

      • Pene says:

        @ Ava

I want to respond but your comment is complete jibberish.

      • oneshot says:

Victoria Beckham was never formally trained as a designer either, and yet she is respected in the fashion world because she makes clothes that people actually wear and pay to wear. She’s competent at her work, and that makes her fit to be called a designer.

You really can’t say the same of Kanye.

      • Chem says:

I agree. It’s very funny that this people are criticizing Kanye West’s designs, they obviously don’t know. In order to be in fashion you must have an open mind, embrace different things, you can’t just divide the world in two groups: 1-. Things I find pretty and would wear. 2-. Things I don’t like and are ugly.
There are many sectors you can design for, what you may find ugly may be beautiful for someone else.
A person like this Kelly Cutrone is an intolerant offensive person, I don’t know who she is of course, but if she knew about fashion, she would know how to be critic without being offensive and that there is always someone that would buy. You guys are the same as this woman.

I have not seen the show but the looks and the show are always a compliment to the clothes, you may see something extravagant as a whole but the pieces for separated are probably nice, I mean, you don’t have to wear head to toe this line or with a bullet proof vest.

      • Pene says:

@ oneshot, Well yes, she is more respected, but not totally anyway. She has clothing more people will wear because she makes boring clothing that is ripped off from other designers. Kanye makes weird things, but that doesn’t make it any less of a fashion statement. In fact, it makes it more of one.

If you’re looking for fashion like that of Victoria Beckham, you may as well shop at department stores and look like everyone else. But in fashion, just like art, there needs to be weirdos who make ridiculous things.

      • randand00 says:

If I were to take a shit on the sidewalk and call it “art” – doesn’t make me an artist. Further, anyone who looks at said shit and says, “Yes, that art is pure genius! Transcendental! Bravo!” is an idiot…with a shit fetish. But, I would never shit on the sidewalk, nor do I look at people’s shit and think that it’s art. Kanye can’t distinguish between his shit and real art. Beyonce needs to get a pair of tweezers and pull the dingle-berry (Kanye) out of her ass. Which concludes my shit analogies for the afternoon. Ciao!

    • M.J. says:

Thank you! I love to sing, but anyone who’s ever heard me sing will tell you that I shouldn’t sing lol. Which is why I sing in my car or when I’m alone and cleaning the house. I would never go and audition for American Idol, duh!

    • Tristan says:

Kanye Kartrashian West is a joke, period!

    • teehee says:

Yeah. What they have going on is a sponsorship deal that is tied in with tabloids, headlines, and being papped, but this is jsut for HOLLYWOOD/red carpet only. This is NOT the same as Victoria Beckhams work in fashion, for example- she isnt just expressing her “grandiosity” because she thinks she can– these people just want to look good or look talented or accomplished but this is on the surface only.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

Kanye West is a joke in all facets of life, the end.

  2. Ann says:

No one with that hairdo should critisize others.

    • Pinky says:

Kelly Cutrone up there, looking deceased.

      • sighhhh says:

Knowledge is knowing what to say. Wisdom is knowing if or when to say it. Kelly lacks tact and judging by her appearance, perhaps, even style. If she feels fully competent to limit other human beings and what they are capable of or talented in….. that’s her thing, I guess. A simple statement on not caring for the designs would have been enough.

      • Dani2 says:

Oh my goodness I snorted so hard at this comment…you’re not wrong though.

      • boredblond says:

Right? I can’t ever bring myself to defend anything about kanye, but my only knowledge of this woman comes from her guest spots on Dr Phil..she came off as a real bully.

      • DaysAndNightsOnAir says:

Kayne West is not a private person making art in his garage, But he is very much a part of that calculated celebritiy reality-tv show world. And he tries to sell his “art”. And therefore it is perfectly acceptable to criticise his “art” a bit more directly. Nope, if my amateur designer neighbour would make clothes as Kayne does I wouldn’t criticise. But Kayne tries to shove his “art” down our throats and I find that offensive.

    • BebeA says:

Bwahhhh…….. I thought the same thing. Plus no one has a lock on fashion, if it’s not for him ….the consumers will let him know by not purchasing his stuff. Let him do what he is passionate about, spend his money, make his statement, and see how it goes. I think that he was in school for art or something so this might have been a desire before he started rapping. in conclusion take a chill pill hippy hair………

    • Jusme says:

Thank you. I was just thinking anyone who looks like her can’t be a judge of fashion. Honestly, someone as put together (don’t hate) as Taylor Swift can call him out or say Helen Mirren…hell, RuPaul can read him…not that hobo looking woman.

    • denisemich says:

I don’t like Kelly and I don’t know how she is a decider about fashion. YUCK!

I actually like some of the pieces from Kanye’s line. I was confused at first by the use of panty hose over the clothes. But maybe some of the models had cellulite.

      • Sugar says:

Kelly’s company produces fashion shows for designers so I think she does know.

      • denisemich says:

She is public relations for fashion shows. This means she presents an image that designers want for a brand of clothes to the media and public. For fashion shows she does invites and seating charts. This is not the same thing as producing a fashion show. She does not do set design, creative direction and production services as well as offer analysis, consultancy and project management.

  3. Anname says:

The idea of any toddler in a bullet proof vest makes me a little sick.

    • Dani2 says:

It makes me really uncomfortable tbh. That beautiful child is just an accessory to these two egomaniacs.

      • fun factor says:

When I saw pictures of North wearing that vest, all I could think was what’s next, Kanye? Kiddie straightjackets?

    • PunkyMomma says:

Me, too. Kayne – don’t gangsta that gorgeous child.

    • Zip says:

Well, in a country where a toddler basically can get and shoot a gun or rifle, a bulletproof vest is not the worst idea.

      • Delta Juliet says:

I am not a gun person by any means but seriously? The only way a toddler is getting a gun is if the parents are complete and utter morons.

      • Andria says:

“if the parents are complete and utter morons”

        Like North’s parents’? 😉

    • Delta Juliet says:

Thank God. I thought I was the only one who was uncomfortable with that.

    • Lanster says:

I was scrolling through the comments to see if I was the only one who was like …UH? Dafuq? Yeah it’s inappropriate and unnecessary, I mean a cute Camo, denim jacket would give the same vibe he’s going for but leave the political statements on the models please. Yebus.

  4. LadyMTL says:

Am I the only one who finds the idea of a toddler wearing a bulletproof vest to be really macabre? I mean, I understand the social commentary behind it but yeah, I would not want my kid to be in one, it gives me the creeps.

As for Kanye’s fashion cred, he’s a legend in his own mind. At this point I don’t think he cares what anyone thinks, he’s the best at everything.

    • AustenGirl says:

@LadyMTL: I had the same reaction. That’s a horrifying image!

Our university hosted 5 daughters of slain civil rights leaders at a public forum last night. To have had the privilege to hear their powerful message of striving toward equality and peace and then to see a beautiful African-American child wearing a bullet proof vest–it’s incredibly jarring and disturbing. I can only acknowledge this as social justice commentary because for it to be merely a fashion statement is abhorrent.

    • Domestic_diva says:

No you aren’t I was quite taken aback. Then he’s says daddy’s muse..your daughter inspired you to design bulletproof vests for an athletic line? Like you were sitting there changing her diaper and were like “you know what you’d be beautiful in baby girl? A bulletproof vest!!” Nah

    • Anony says:

It is disturbing to see. That said, does it actually work or is it just designed to look like one? I wouldn’t mind my child wearing one (under the clothes where no one can see) if we ever took a trip to the US. I can’t believe that in that country people (ordinary citizens) can ‘open-carry’ so basically walk around with a gun! Or have a gun in their car ready to shoot someone the next time they have road rage!

However, I assume this vest is just made to look like one? But yeah, trip to the states…I would totally buy them for my kids. You guys’ country is crazy.

    • Anna says:

Well, I actually find it kind of interesting not only because Kanye was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. (And please before I get slammed for stereotyping, pleae note: I live on the south side of Chicago.) In the summer especially, there are regularly incidents of little kids being shot, sometimes walking to school or even playing in their homes and bullets come throuh the walls in some driveby or street-level gang shootout. So while his child certainly doesn’t need a bulletproof vest, if he was making a social statement (not sure about that), it would make some kind of sense to me. I remember years ago a father designing bullet-proof backpacks for his elementary age children. I guess, regardless of the collection, in terms of bullet-proof clothing for kids, I actually kind of agree though I do think that alternative protective fabrics can be used nowadays, not a traditional police-style vest.

  5. savu says:

Hahaha I love Kelly. And totally agree with her. (I think she’s too hard on Sean John, because it IS successful. It was never trying to play alongside Dior, you know?) The twist is obviously how Anna Wintour has a relationship with him now. I doubt that really raises the profile by that much, because who’s gonna buy it? You could distress some black pants yourself, boom.

Also if you haven’t read Kelly’s books If You Have to Cry Go Outside and Normal Gets You Nowhere, I highly recommend them. They’re funny, but surprisingly soulful. She talks a lot about feminism and having a “wolf pack” of a family, aka super close loyal friends.

    • Gea says:

      Love Kelly!

    • Kdlaf says:

Totally agree. Sean Jean stayed in its lane and was able to become a huge brand. Kanye is an amazing musician and should just stick to that. He clearly has too many yes-men in his inner circle. The clothes were incredibly bland even though Im sure a lot of thought was put into them.

    • Kiki04 says:

I still can’t believe Anna Wintour gives those two the time of day. In my opinion that knocks her opinion down a lot, not raises Kanye and Kim. But I’m probably in the unfortunate minority there…..

  6. minx says:

    Good to hear; she’s right.

  7. Estella says:

“Cutrone has a hate-on for Kanye and Kim Kardashian.” As should any rational person. He designed a Kevlar vest for his own child. This is not genius; it is madness.

  8. lem says:

here is the thing— i absolutely get and support the statement he was *trying* to make with the bulletproof vests. his execution of his ideas (the occasionally legit ideas) is always so off point that the important message he was trying to convey gets lost due to Kanye being Kanye.

  9. minx says:

That poor child looks so bored and tired. She should be out playing somewhere, wearing cute casual clothes, being a kid.

    • M.A.F. says:

She probably is bored. The only color they put her in black/gray. I also doubt they read to her and/or interact with her on any level.

      • minx says:

And that’s how young childrens’ brains develop–reading, play, interaction with their parents, bright colors, stimulation. They just plop North on their laps and sit there.

      • TeaAndSympathy says:

I can tell you that I never interact with my bags, scarves, jewellery etc.,but I’m certain my accessories couldn’t give a rat’s arse whether or not I read to, play or sing with, or interact with them in any way. They don’t suffer in any way when I completely ignore them. Unfortunately, children do…

  10. Talie says:

Kanye should pay attention to the very good criticism that Robin Givhan and Cathy Horyn gave him — those two are the premier fashion critics right now. They didn’t slam him, but gave useful advice. Although, I doubt he will read it.

  11. Catelina says:

I don’t really get kanye’s fashion line. It seemed like most of the pieces were very nothingy and ugly to boot. However, though I felt bad she had to just sit there for what must have been an unpleasant time for her, the pictures of North screaming in terror during the shows while the people around her look uncomfortable were highly entertaining.

  12. kcarp says:

I had no idea who Kelly Cutrone was then I recognized her as being on dr phil

North please find a toddler lawyer and get yourself emancipated quick before they put you in Spanx.

  13. Jane says:

I can hear Kanye screaming right now, “F*** that S***, I AM the greatest designer of all time!”

  14. Eve says:

Love her comments. She says what most of the public thinks and what the fashion world SHOULD be saying out loud about Kimye instead humouring them.

As for the Sean John comment, she did not say anything negative or to harsh about the line, she says is very successful but its not trying to be a couture hight fashion line like Kanye West is.

  15. littlemissnaughty says:

Oh whatever. Kanye’s line is fug, that’s for sure. But the high fashion people live in a world of their own and think their opinion is relevant to everyone. Yes, Kelly, look down on Sean John. It’s an incredibly successful brand and I bet Diddy is not someone who has to survive NYC with a budget of 1 million a year. He rakes it in because he gives people what they like, not what you think is “art”.

High fashion is not for most people. It’s not attainable and a lot of it is not even wearable. It has its place but that place is not most closets. People like Diddy or even Jessica Simpson are making the real money. Sometimes I feel like “fashion people” are just p*ssed because of that.

    • Loopy says:

Exactly! they make decent quality, wearable fashion at an affordable price for the masses. And they are racking it in.

  16. Loopy says:

How do some of these fashion houses exist when most of the people that can afford them only borrow them, yes I understand they can free publicity but the high end fashion business boggles me. I guess their real clientele are the super rich, the 1%

    • I used to wonder that too because being in Paris, it’s not very label heavy so I thought who are all of these people buying this overpriced stuff? Then I realized it’s mostly rich Asian, Russian and Americans. i love America but that is one thing I don’t miss: label whoring.

    • AG-UK says:

That and perfume and handbags… I go into Selfridges and there are Chinese people and the Qatari’s with 5 Chanel or other designer bags at the counter ready to buy at £3500 -£5k a pop the have to put up ropes like a nightclub.

      • Loopy says:

Yes the rich Arabs buy this stuff up without blinking an eye, very few celebrities would actually be able to afford those award season wardrobes.

    • Sister Carrie says:

      Saudis LOVE couture.

    • Dolce crema says:

I think they only lend to celebs, not the 1%, many of who are older, private, and or old money

  17. PinaColada says:

She might be right. And we all know he’s….off. But now I feel like it’s just a mean girls thing. Let him try. You don’t have to say he’s awesome, but he is putting on shows and designing door good or bad, so he IS a designer. He might not be stellar or the top, but he is. And this is coming from a non-fan who likes his earlier music but had purchased nothing of his ever.

    • Loopy says:

I think lots of designers try and are not publicly slammed, like people don’t like the fact that Victoria Beckham hires people to design for her but she is gracious and more often than not she is praised. But Kanye is a brat that storms stages and says OTHER artists aren’t good enough, so let other designers say he is crap as childish as it is. He needs to humble himself.

    • Eve says:

The problem that people have with Kanye West is not that he is simply trying his luck in designing and humbly hopes people like his hard work like other designers (especially the up and coming ones who still have to prove themselves). No, Kanye thinks that all his designs and fashion ideas and tastes and nothing but pure genius on his part even though he still has alot to learn and prove before even calling himself a true designer. Kanye is aiming straight for haute couture fashion even though he is inexperienced and not that talented at it (or at all in my opinion) while P.diddy created a line that was much more realistic to his abilities and experience and thus its much more appreciated and successful for what it is. Just because Kanye can afford to buy haute couture does not mean he is now an expert in designing it himself.

    • oneshot says:

Kanye has no idea of the concept of actually training to become good at this design gig.

He showed his first line in Paris Fashion Week – a place where any other designer, even acclaimed ones like Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Martin Margiela, has to wait years to be INVITED to show because there is a certain quality of work that is expected from a designer at PFW. He got to bypass that because he paid a ton of money and brought in a smaller independent designer to do the grunt work of designing but still put his name above the marquee. He deserves every bit of the pillorying he gets for trying to play fashion without bothering to develop the skills.

The Olsen twins and Victoria Beckham are celebrities who are considered designers and that is because they move product. Same with Sean John. Kanye is just a pop star playing at it, and will be treated as such unless he checks his ego at the door and tries to come up with original ideas instead of ripping off stylistic touches from better designers.

    • PinaColada says:

I agree that he didn’t pay his dues and do not like his line. I’m just feeling bad for him with all the public pile-on. I know he’s a jerk. I just feel bad. I’m too soft.

      • lirko says:

I get it. It doesn’t really matter who it is, is still hard to watch. Whether or not someone “deserves” to be publicly lambasted, I am not personally comfortable making that decision, you know?

  18. Clucky says:

I loved Snoop Dogg (Lion?)’s summary of Kanye’s fashion line. He posted a picture of an Ugg boot with a piece of duct tape over it.

    • Amy says:

…damn the Internet is just fun these days 🙂

    • I Choose Me says:

Hahahahaha. Funniest thing I’ve read this week.

    • Pandy says:

OMG – I will have to look for that ha ha ha. Kelly is right – he’s not a designer. Not sure why he’s even getting a chance to “design”. I guess it’s the publicity angle. It sure isn’t the clothes!

    • Dani2 says:

Snoop Dogg’s Instagram is hilarious, it occasionally goes too far but I check it from time to time.

  19. scout says:

Kelly needs a stylist and lot of sleep, just sayin’.
I agree with her, Kanye is nuts. Body (stocking/legging) suit and bullet proof vest? Kim looked ridiculous in that. But as long as he is making money, he is good to go folks. All I want to know is how torturous it was for Anna Wintour to sit and suffer through that “show”!

    • That’s just it. The people who wear Adidas are probably more in line with being Kanye fans, as opposed to Kanye designing for Moncler. So really they’re going to pull in a lot of his base. Which is a smart move. I mean when did hip hop and sportswear ever go wrong? At the end of the day fashion is all about money (I didn’t realize that until I moved here). True “fashion” is not obtainable to the everyday masses and it’s not as profitable either so.

  20. The Original Mia says:

Just saying what everyone thinks about Kanye’s line. I don’t agree with her comments about Sean John, which I consider to be the “urban” version of Ralph Lauren. It’s not that serious and I don’t know of anyone who takes it that seriously.

    • WardLittell says:

Irrelevant to a really fascinating discussion, but…..
I think the Ralph Lauren version of Ralph Lauren is pretty laughable, and I’m always amused by the lush ads for some imaginary, Hollywoodised English mansion à la Cecil Beaton, peopled by Waspy models and idealised, fun-free children (even the black kids are somehow WASP). He’s always struck me as the great onanist of the fashion world, and Kanye, in comparison, seems restrained!

  21. I guess I’m a fashion snob because I didn’t realize Sean John still existed. But I do love Moncler. Their store is right next door where I live in Paris (and currently the jackets and trainers in their windows are covetable but that being said not everyone can afford $900 Moncler coats. Hell my lightweight down is from Uniqlo.

But whatevs. Kanye does suck as a designer. It’s not “fashion”, which for me is art (like McQueen). Obviously most couture isn’t wearable (it’s art baby) but Kanye’s isn’t wearable because it’s pantyhose hideousness not because it’s beautiful art.

    • LAK says:

I think Kanye is trying to do Couture for the masses without:

      1. Realising that he doesn’t have the necessary skill required for Haute Couture, and i’m not simply talking the technical aspects.

      2. The masses don’t always understand Haute Couture. That isn’t to say that the public is stupid or uninformed, only that Haute Couture is usually translated to ready-to-wear which is then mass-publicized and so the original idea is watered down which is what the public is used to.

      3. Presentating it in a way that seduces the masses. And Kim really isn’t the best advertisement for his fashion ideas. It looks wrong on her because she simultaneously trying to be haute couture and valley girl without filtering which of those things she wants to be and dedicating herself to it. I feel they arrive at a bad compromise.

      • WardLittell says:

Your 3rd point is just what I wanted to say: what exactly is his aesthetic? He goes out all guns for the Kardashian “shield your innocent eyes” look, as seen on the various K daughters, he idolises Kim’s curvaceous body…….then he brings out a line that only a Stella Tennant could wear with any insouciance.
Fair play to him for not making tarts and trollops of his models, but I can’t grasp his intentions at all.

    • FingerBinger says:

@iseepink No one is wearing Sean John anymore. It was very popular and now it’s not.

  22. mzizkrizten says:

a baby bullet proof vest?! so morbid. ew.

  23. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not a Kanye fan, but I think her comments were so insufferable. What a snob. Publicly calling another person a joke is so rude.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Normally I would agree with you and I do find her insufferable in general. Her comments are ridiculous (I’ve posted re that above). But Kanye brings it on himself. He’s loud, he’s arrogant, he’s (hopefully) trolling people all day long. The delusion is strong in this one and he should be able to take it. After all, he knows how to dish it out.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Well, you both have a point. I hadn’t thought of that. He certainly doesn’t mind being rude himself.

      • lirko says:

But two wrongs don’t make a right (as my dad would say). I understand that when you put yourself out there, professionally speaking, you sign up to have your work critiqued – it’s part of the deal. This, too me, seemed personal, as she went on about how everyone thinks he’s a joke, etc. I just don’t think what she said and how she said it was appropriate or professional.

    • Sally J. Freedman says:

Yes it was rude. Just like it was rude for him to storm the stage on Taylor Swift, and Beck. I’m all for her rudeness. Let him have a taste of his own medicine. Not that he’ll even acknowledge what she had to say.

  24. maeliz says:

Kanye is definitely not a designer. Making his Adidas clothes look like something not even homeless ragamuffins would wear is a joke. Poor North having to see that brought her to tears. He said that he doesn’t read things about himself, but maybe he should start. If he read what critics said, maybe he’ll stop “designing” when he gets how bad it is

    • G says:

Remember the secretary in the Tom Hanks movie Splash. She was hit in the head by lightening and kept coming to work with her underwear on the outside of her clothes???

Yeah, that pretty much sums up Kanye’s line.

  25. Jenna says:

    I love this woman!!

  26. M.J. says:

I love Kelly’s epic bitchiness. She is right about Kanye. He’s an insufferable fool who can’t design anything.

As far as Diddy goes – he is not my taste at all, however he actually sells things that people want to have. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to wear Kanye’s body pantyhose, some of his coats are ok, but that’s about it.

  27. Dawn says:

Am I the only one that doesn’t see the “genius” in having people talking about your show a whole week later? I think his show was the worse of the worst and it really showed his lack of not only design skills but his lack of using color and thinking by using dull muted colors he is making the world a prettier place is simply ridiculous. I think he is a poser. He wants to have the talent to be in the world of fashion so bad and certain people keep allowing him to play but the truth of the matter is he simply doesn’t have it. There was no saving grace to that awful mess he present to the world. Kelly is speaking the truth and certain people aren’t going to like it for their own personal but to me messed up reasoning. But still truth is truth. Thank you Kelly for saying what the majority of we out here in the real world were and are thinking.

  28. Amy says:

    Kanye sucks at fashion.

He’s got a clouded vision. His execution is clunky. He rejects contstuctive criticism and his clothes are laughibly bad.

    The woman just isn’t wrong.

Add to it that all of Kanye’s many many celebrity friends are never seen wearing anything he’s designed lets me know they ‘support’ him the same way my parents supported my brother when he wanted to be an astronaut. I actually feel a tiny bit bad for Kanye in this way. He’s being used and lied to because he brings the drama and cameras and he’s too delusional to realize it.

  29. 9 says:

    preach Kelly

  30. Ari says:

The worst part about us all hating on him is that he is just going to turn around and say that as usual genius is misunderstood and it almost will make him feel validated in some weird twisted way. Maybe everyone should just fawn all over him instead so that he goes away lol

    • word says:

No, if this clothing line fails like his previous one did, he’ll just blame it on racism and how the world just can’t handle his “interracial marriage” and “mixed baby”.

  31. Nicolette says:

He’s a joke alright, and a bad one at that.

  32. Domestic_diva says:

Side note I don’t know what it is but KIM looks so pretty to me in that picture

  33. ashley says:

didn’t he JUST say in an interview that he doesn’t want to call himself a fashion designer bc he doesn’t want to insult the real designers? He just has a passion for it so he’s doing it, type of thing. I think people love to hate hate hate hate hate.

  34. HurryUp says:

Man, super long hair is almost always aging. She looked better with shoulder length.

  35. Katija says:

She’s missing the point. Sean John is really accessible to the average consumer, which is what Diddy wanted to do. Lines like Roca Wear and Phat Farm are targeted to urban consumers in a logical price range. The entrepreneurs behind these lines created a product for their fans that their fans would easily be able to obtain at retailers like Macys or Bonton. It’s an unfair dig at Diddy, because he’s not trying to be the next Gucci. He knows what his line is and he’s reaped the financial benefits of his self-awareness. The issue is that instead of creating a mid-level line that would have been accessible to his fans, Kanye decided that he was going to be the next Prada. He should create affordable lines for the average consumer and get his head out of his rear end. tl;dr – Kelly was right, but the dig at Sean John was unfair.

    • lirko says:

Just wondering, do you have any idea of what the price point will be for his line? Is the idea that Adidas will mass produce his designs? It’ll be interesting to see how this whole thing pans out.

      • Katija says:

Oy. I don’t remember the exact numbers, so don’t quote me on this, but he did have some rambly Kanye quote about how “just because it’s $500 a pair doesn’t mean it’s not for everyone!”

  36. Veritas says:

I agree with KC. I think Kanyes style is wack. And his designs are not that great. I could have made my own Kanye outfit just get sum pantyhose and cut up a shirt and sew it together and wala u have a Kanye original. I think his clothes look unpractical to wear and the designs are unflattering. U also have to be really thin or u might look like a sausage.

  37. G says:

Who over 15yrs old wears Sean John? When I see Kanye with a thread and needle sweating over a sewing machine, with pins hanging out his mouth THEN I’ll consider his ‘designs’ (garbage). A baby wearing a bullet proof vest. Parental FAIL.

    • word says:

Yeah isn’t Sean Jean a thing of the past? Who wears it anymore?

Though I do give Kanye credit for actually being involved in his clothing line (unlike other celebs who take no part in the design or decision making process). He is technically a designer. He’s just not a successful one. This is the reason why I don’t understand why he was given a slot at NYFW. If he wasn’t already famous, NO ONE would be giving his designs any attention. His shoes have sold out but that’s because he only releases a limited amount ! There are way more deserving designers out there who are much more talented but no one is giving them a chance.

  38. Dana says:

I think Jessica Simpson has some really cute, affordable pieces which are usually on sale at The Bay. I never thought her as a fashion designer but I like that her pieces are comfortable, practical and stylish but not over the top.

    • Katija says:

Everyone RIPS on her shoe line, but it is GORGEOUS. I had a pair of JS heels mistaken for Jimmy Choos, I kid you not.

  39. mytbean says:

There’s “fashion” where it’s nothing you’d actually wear but it’s done by recognizable artists and so owning it is like an investment… like ugly art that has value only in that it is rare and that the artist broke creative barriers at some point in time. People own those pieces as true die-hard fans, relatives of someone who passed it down or just to be pretentious.

Then there’s fashion that we actually wear – that looks nice and we want to own not only because the designer is about quality but also about aesthetics. If the label carries a positive reputation with it then that’s just a bonus.

Kanye is trying very hard to fit into the first category. Knowing his antics, he’ll keep at it simply because he’s getting attention -any attention. That’s all it takes for him to believe he’s a fashion deity. The only opinion that matters to him is his own so, based on that he’s a smashing success.

    • lirko says:

Agree. And this is why the negative critiques, en masse, will probably have little effect on him, it’s the whole “If you don’t like it, it’s because you don’t get it” mentality.

      • DaysAndNightsOnAir says:

And I would add that I “don’t get it” because there is little “get it” to Kayne’s “art”.

  40. word says:

It’s funny that the celebs who showed up at his show got much more attention than his clothes. It’s like blogs/entertainment shows had nothing good to say about his designs so they just focused on who was sitting front row and about Nori’s melt down.

  41. Frosty says:

I love Kaiser’s comment about fashion snobbery and I also love that Kanye’s got the fashionistas in a twist. In fact, I love it madly.

  42. Ginger says:

UGH! Kevlar vests are life saving but ugly as sin! How is that fashion inspiration?! Stupid, stupid, stupid.

  43. blue says:

Reading her statements again i know realize that it’s not really Kanye’s fashion that she has a problem with but Kanye himself. Her problem seems to be with the fact that Kanye and Kim are all people talk about when it comes to this fashion events. So she’s trying to claim they actually have no influence and that nobody cares about them, which i beg to differ. Her other problem with Kanye is that his not legit. So just because he did not travel the same road as other fashion designers his not legitimate. This is exactly what Kanye was ranting about last year when he claimed he was being marginalized in the fashion world because of classicism, elitism, and racism. Apparently because his rapper he doesn’t belong in the fashion world. Notice that she states, “I just think that you should stay focused at what you’re good at.” Why should he? Are you only allowed to pursue one interest in life and so what if his horrible designers? It’s the customers, in the end, who will dictate whether his a good fashion designer or not. I think what some in fashion world fear Kanye’s influence in the Celebrity world and too some extent the fashion industry. I mean just look at the people that showed up to his fashion show. It’s really the celebrities that set the fashion trends and why all this designers flock to dress them. I bet all this attention will actually make his line very successful. His new shoe that cost $350 sold out in 10 minutes and now people are reselling them for over $1000.
