Julianne Moore wins in Dior at the Spirit Awards: adorable or not that great?

wenn22219309

Not so shockingly, Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards likely predicted every major award at tonight’s Oscars. There was a split between Birdman for Best Picture and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) for Best Director. Julianne Moore, JK Simmons, Michael Keaton and Patricia Arquette all took home acting honors. The only one in that group who isn’t a sure thing? Keaton. If I was a voting Academy member, I would probably have given it to Eddie Redmayne. But we’ll see.

In any case, Julianne Moore looked pretty good in this Christian Dior cocktail dress. Here’s the thing: I don’t mind redheads in red. I don’t mind redheads in green. But I have issues with any hair color in weird yellow tones. The dress is so shiny that the yellow reads more as gold, but it comes dangerously close to making Julianne look really sallow. Also: I really, really hope her relationship withstands the Best Actress Curse.

Richard Linklater wasn’t at the Spirit Awards, so when he won Best Director, Ethan Hawke came up and accepted the award on his behalf. God help me, I would still hit it. I’m not even sorry.

Winner JK Simmons- he’s totally going to win the Oscar. And good for him. On one of those THR Oscar Ballot pieces, one of the voters referred to him as “the journeyman actor.” That’s a nice way of saying he’s one of the greatest character actors working today.

Here’s JK’s Whiplash costar Miles Teller. Whiplash is nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, so that’s why Miles is everywhere these days. I’m glad he shaved his ratty mustache (I think it was for a role anyway).

Here’s Oprah and nominee David Oyelowo. I love his suit!!

I love Ava DuVernay’s ensemble. She didn’t win anything, which is a damn shame.

I so wish that someone who knows how to dress Julianne would take her on. She almost never dresses well and she’s so fabulous. Kinda like Meryl. Their “wins” sartorially are more like “better than usual”s
    Ava is perfection.

    • jen2 says:

This dress looks like a bad Monet painting. She also wears the same shoes with every outfit. She is very talented and attractive, but her smile always seems so forced. Ava is magnificent. A beautiful and talented woman who one day one be rewarded. David’s smile always blows me away. He is gorgeous.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree, Charlotte. This dress is better than usual, to me, and she looks cute, but the color does nothing for her. I find her SO pretty and I wish she dressed better.
      Love Ava’s look, too.
I’m busty (not nearly Oprah size, but still), and one thing I’ve learned is to never put your arm around someone else’s shoulders for a picture or your breasts become the focal point of the picture. I like her dress, though.

      • Charlotte says:

Yes to the boobs observation. I hasn’t even registered that as Oprah the first look through because all I saw was a mountain of pillowy boobage.

      • Kiddo says:

I wish the designers would flush the bile vomit color for good. It looks nice on absolutely no one.

      • Bridget says:

Those girls are enormous. All you see in that picture is BOOBS.

I think Julianne’s dress might look incredible in person, with all that delicate detail work, but isn’t translating well to a camera.

      • EC says:

Yes! I was going to say, Oprah is trying to do something that a friend of mine does when she is trying to get a great angle going. Halfway hide behind someone else, tilt your body away from the camera, stick your arm out in a crazy angle, bend over a little bit….all these annoying things.

Or maybe this is a candid pic. Oprah typically doesn’t make me so rage-y so I will go with that.

    • Megan says:

Julianne’s dress looks like a Christmas tree ornament.

    • Stef Leppard says:

Ava looks like a cheap motel painting from the waist down. I like the top though. That purple color looks nice on her.

  2. jenn12 says:

Dave and Oprah look great. Julianne looks like she wants to be in the Ice Capades.

  3. minx says:

Julianne is so pretty, but she dresses so badly.

  4. Laurie says:

Haven’t Julianne and her husband been together for like 20 years? She’s also been nominated several times during that. Just thought the ‘Oscar curse’ comment seemed really off-base.

    • booboobird says:

it’s not the nomination. it’s winning the award that sets the curse in motion.
Julianne is a pretty woman but her dress is many shades of no.
love the blue suit and Ava is badass.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, I think they’re fine. Just putting the idea out there about the curse feels icky to me.

    • Bridget says:

It’s like the Best Supporting Actress Curse. Its not a guarantee that your career will sink into obscurity if you win, but there have been some glaring examples. Everyone remembers Reese flogging the ‘happy family’ image hard during her Walk The Line campaign only to have them split months later because it turned out they were utterly miserable the whole time. And we all of course know what happened to Sandra Bullock.

    • Ellen says:

There was a blind somewhere (Lainey?) implying that Julianne’s husband (Bart Freundlich) almost left her for Catherine Zeta-Jones back after they made a movie together, back in 2009. Supposedly it was Michael Douglas’s cancer and then Z-J’s battles to control her bipolar disorder that torpedoed it. Supposedly Moore had no idea that any of it was going down.

  5. **sighs** says:

I don’t normally go for florals, but Ava looks so classy and beautiful.

  6. Juniper says:

It’s cute- but she needs to keep her mouth closed. The second she begins to smile I want to run and hide.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

I miss when attire for the Spirit awards was beach casual, and they would show up in shorts. That wasn’t so long ago.

    • Kiddo says:

      Beige booty shorts, the end.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Most definitely.

      • mia girl says:

@kiddo – Since dresses with see through skirts have been rather popular this award season, I’ve been secretly hoping that on tonight’s Oscar red carpet, we see one brave actress in this look where she forgos the granny panties and instead wears beige booty shorts.
        Bedhead would love it.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Maybe I’ll get nominated someday and I can wear my scratch and sniff beige booty shorts. Lol that even grossed me out. Sorry.

      • kri says:

You just had to do it, didn’t you? The hot new accessory will be a Dior (of course) Fake Baby Convertible backpack. The Fake Baby Bag will come in alligator, ostrich, and Choupette sheddings and be carried by BCoop and Kristen Stewart.

      • mia girl says:

GNAT I’d pay good money to see you in beige booty shorts, the unscented kind.
Kri- love it! At the very least I’m pretty sure they’ll be a Sniper fake baby joke tonight.

  8. Jayna says:

The Spirit Awards aren’t stuffy. So I think they all look great. I like Julianne’s quirkiness. That color on Oprah is great. I think Ava looks stunning. All the men look great. I’m going to see Julianne’s movie today, Still Alice.

Can I just say I couldn’t sleep last night and didn’t want to disturb he household, so rented a movie on my laptop with my earphones in. Sophie’s Choice.

Meryl Streep really is the best actress of all time, isn’t she? There are absolutely no words to describe her performance. It was an utterly transformative performance that never feels forced. I went on Ebert’s website to read his review, and it made me miss him so much. We are really missing great movie reviewers like him, aren’t we? I am glad Meryl is still working but her later work just isn’t the caliber roles she got when younger and just strong leading women roles that probably wouldn’t get made today anyway,

Anyway, I feel like I need to go to the theater to see Still Alice to support Julianne today. The reviews are great and I know her performance is supposed to be fantastic, so I would like to see it on the big screen before the Oscars.

    • charlie says:

I think Meryl is amazing, but I don’t think she’s the best of all time. Also, I wsh people would say best English-speaking actress of all time, because there are so many amazing actors around the world who don’t get so much recognition because they weren’t born in the UK or US.

  9. Ice Queen says:

    I love Ava’s skirt. It’s beautiful.

  10. paola says:

Julianne is awesome but I wish she would get accolades for many other works rather than the one in ‘Still Alice’. I feel like the women category was really weak this year. And I am a big fan of Julianne!

  11. bette says:

It looks like Big Bird vomited all his feathers up on Julianne Moore

  12. vauvert says:

Oh Julianne, I love you but please, get so done else to dress you. Every time this year (with the exception of the green dress – BAFTA?) was horrible, just no.
Ava’s skirt was lovely and the simple top a good choice but I did not like the jacket at all. Sorry…
With all of her money, you would think Oprah would have a good stylist. Big boobs and high up the neck dresses do not go together. The end.

  13. Ginger says:

That’s funny because I just watched an Ethan Hawke movie last night. God help me because I’d hit it too. Even when he looks almost exactly like and acts just as arrogantly as my ex fiance. Love his suit color. Adore the fact that Julianne won! Yay! I hope she wins again tonight too.

  14. Anare says:

If only Julianne Moore would stand up straight and quit with the knocked knees, hunched up stance, usually accompanied by a huge forced smile. She’s been to these gigs lots of times, not her first go around. Dress is ok, black near her face saves it from turning her yellow. She should ditch her stylist, one fug out after another this awards season.

  15. Sea Dragon says:

Julianne looks like a porcelain doll wearing a handmade aluminum foil dress.

  16. bettyrose says:

Too much color. I don’t want to look at any more dresses from the Brach’s candy catalog just now.

  17. the_blonde_one says:

Julianne’s dress looks like she got into the werthers caramel candies on her way to the event

  18. Lahdidahbaby says:

Oh dear. Julianna’s dress. She looks like a burrito to go.

  19. ch2 says:

how in the actual f**k is Julianne Moore 54 years old O_O
